VW is forced to squeeze every penny of profit out of the Golf due to their massive losses with EV’s (as well as Dieselgate). Unfortunately this results in lower quality interiors (which used to be a differentiator for VW), no knobs for climate controls, low resolution cameras and in general a vehicle that is less competitive with Japanese and Korean alternatives.
@@roch145it’s been nearly 10 years since the diesel thing. VW are the second largest automaker in the world. Don’t make out Japanese or Korean or French cars in this class are built with fine materials either. They aren’t. They are all cutting costs trying to run 2 entirely different lineups at once, plus with Euro 6/7 regulations of emissions that add at least £5k to the cost of the average car, is why car manufacturers are genuinely having a rough time of it. Volvo have put nearly all controls in the screen, no speakers in the doors, no switches to save on production costs so everything is as close to the middle of the car. They are all at it.
@@Olliebobalong The problem with Dieselgate (even though it was 8 years ago) is it cost VW at least $15 billion. They lost market share. They lost brand loyalty. They lost sales. You see more innovation in Japanese brands (especially style and quality from Mazda) as well as Korean brands. VW continues to devalue their brand and market niche with all of their cost cutting. The market share losses in the US are staggering. Bad management, poor leadership, too conservative in their design philosophy. All have contributed to losses. VW products always seem to come up short compared to the competition. In the US, nothing of VW’s German heritage is in their products. In the US, you can’t get an ID4 with a heat pump, which improves range and efficiency, while competitors offer heat pumps. The ID4 comes with drum brakes, to save money, while competitors have disk brakes. As far as emissions requirements, all manufacturers are tasked with the same challenge. Unfortunately, government regulators are using emissions regulations as a mechanism to force the termination of ICE vehicles. The European politicians are doing a wonderful job killing their auto and manufacturing businesses. The thought police are empowered now and emboldened. This is what you get when you elect socialists.
it's a AC condensor, there has to be an open grill on the front end of ICE cars for cooling, some vehicles like the abarth 595 will have the intercooler sit directly infront of the condensor but for most vehicles the cooling/opening is usually when the condensor/radiator is placed. I agree though they suffer very easily to fin damage via stone chips, the real problem is the ADAS module is sat right there also likely to get hit by stones/debry/animals etc. VW stopped doing this after it rained water would leak into this module on the Mk7s but it looks like they haven't learnt anything! That module is over £2,000 to replace btw and it puts EML on if it fails so you can't ignore it....
@2:30 How is this any different to using your mobile phone whilst driving? It's mental! I'd also find that screen super distracting. I prefer the screen being intergrated in the centre console lower down.
I agree, it absolutely isn’t and no functions relating to the operation of the car should be accessed via these godawful touchscreens. It’s part of why I like my Toyota Corolla estate so much. I don’t have to do anything through the touchscreen to drive it or operate car systems. All I use it for is sat nav and radio. And I don’t even need to access those via the touchscreen, I could do it all by voice control or the physical volume controls if I wanted to.
I currently drive a Golf 7.5 and even that has commonly used functions that are only available via the screen, including changing the driving mode. Hiding basic functions on a touch screen is really annoying, and is one of the reasons I won’t buy another VW. At least they’ve fixed the steering wheel issue that people were having, now they just need to fix everything else they’ve broken. I remember reading that Nissan has said they won’t put commonly used features, such as driving modes, temperature controls, etc, on the screen because they consider it to be distracting and dangerous. They definitely have a point.
@@AG-yc9bh If I press driving mode all I get is a prompt on the screen, pressing it again just turns the prompt off. Nothing changes unless I select it via the screen.
@@ffotograffydd maybe you have to go to the VW dealer and get it fixed. I have a 7.5 GTI built in 2019. I press "MODE" once and it brings up the screen with the choices. When I press it again, it cycles through the modes and also confirms every selected mode in the instrument (speedo) display.
@@AG-yc9bh Maybe that’s a feature on high-end Golfs? It’s definitely not a fault with my car, I’ve already asked at VW. And regardless, even if it worked as you described you still need to reach down to the button, which is obscured by the gear stick and then look at the screen to cycle through. It’s not the best set up or particularly user friendly.

We're in 2024 and yet car infotainment displays still can't provide a smooth 60Hz (or higher) image and well made animations to go along with it. Scrolling through a menu shouldn't give you a distasteful feeling in my humble opinion. It's not the end of the world, but everything is in the details.
keep saying this myself, the car makers are still sticking in the cheapest processor they can for infotainment systems, it would cost them literally $40 more for a faster cpu but they dont care, let the customer drop £40k on a car with laggy unresponsive infotainment system
drag race every golf 8.5 available: - petrols: 115-150-GTI - diesels: 115-150-(+GTD even if it’s 8 and not 8.5, but would be interesting) - phevs: 204-GTE
I got a Golf Sportwagen Limited in the US back in 2016, with some nice features like heated seats, keyless entry, automatic wipers and all that, for $22K, well they were asking for 26K but I disagreed with them. Some of those features on my mid trim Golf are still not available in $40K cars nowadays.
Are customers really asking for a massive tablet in a car? I don't get it. You can't watch movies so why do you want such a big display? Even when they do have big screens they make the icons so small they are hard to use. Jeez I'm old.
When it comes to servicing these tablets I'm guessing that it's a lot easier to pull off a little trim strip, remove a couple of screws and then unplug it. Service would be a replacement for a new tablet. Sounds a lot smarter than pulling the dash apart to pull out the built in screen.
Glad to see they have addressed a lot of the issues. But a Golf should be the definition of "go right ahead and buy it", let's hope they can find their way back to that level.
Everyone complains about the steering wheel touch sensitive buttons from the mk8. But the real crime there was the ac not being backlit. Like what on earth was that all about.
Volkswagen were the cars in which you could just sit down and start driving. Everything was just perfectly in place. You could just drive without need for having a detailed study of your car‘s operating features. Which customer has ever asked for touch sliding buttons or control via touchscreen for functions so regularly used like a climate control? Hope Volkswagen turns around.
Exactly. I still remember when I entered VW Passat for the first time. I was rather anxious since I never drove a car that big, only drove compacts like Golf until that point. It was incredibly smooth, I immediately picked up on everything and everything went superbly well, from parking and narrow streets through highway driving to motorways and fast traffic. But this...? Not only I would never want those touch sliding buttons, I dont believe I would ever remember to tap them twice to switch funcionality from climate control to seats heating control.
@@jado3069 they probably had focus groups where customers (just like typical buyers) thought the screens looked modern and intuitive and made them feel like the car was really contemporary. The problem is, customers in focus groups often don't think about the implications of daily use, or use the correct criteria to assess if they will really like something. Also it's cost saving. One screen is cheaper than a multitude of knobs and buttons.
Have you gone car shopping lately? ALL cars are. But manufactures also offer incentive and discounts. The end of the year is a great time for that, and the buy.
Probably because they are filling them with tech and cameras that people didn't ask for or even need! Agree that some of it is for safety systems, but it's a shame you can't spec a base version without it. Also no option for cars without touchscreen!
@@krane15 Not really. Korean and Japanese cars have gone way up in premium feelings. While their prices also went up, so did their driving dynamics and overall comfort levels. German carmakers are just behind, and outdated. Even Chinese cars now are reaching comfort and driving quality levels of Germans and at much cheaper prices. Some of these European cars are selling purely using their badge, not real quality.
Did a test drive with the new Passat since my lease of the previous Passat is going to end soon. It also didn't let me drive in peace, constantly reminding me to take my foot off the gas and that I am over speed limit, but that's just how we drive and how the traffic flows. Tried to turn it off, then restarted the car, and it was on again. Needless to say - scratched it off the shortlist.

43mpg!! My 2021 15:11 Kia Niro hybrid easily does 60mpg both in town and long journeys. Golf is a nice car but dated design and engines with not even mild hybrid tech across the range. VW wasted too much cash on developing EVs which could have been better used on Toyota and Kia rivalling hybrid tech.
Yeah my mk7 1.6L diesel gets 50-65mpg, but in this new world of clean air zones apparently a class 4 petrol with worse efficiency is better for the environment.
But I completely agree they went too all in to electric like everyone else and should have developed their hybrid range much more. The Japanese have been smart and obviously realised common sense that electric cars were too expensive and impractical for the masses and so I think they will do very well in the next couple of years.

My friend returned it IMMEDIATELY. There is a issue with car lock remote. Service said this happens in 2024 models. You need to walk away 40metres away to unlock the car. I just went to vacation with 1 series, 2600kilometres visiting ancient cities etc. Comfort mode was mind blowing through corners etc. My gf said normally she get s sick but she is surprised she didnt.
My biggest gripe about my GTI is the lack of rear space. I once had a 2007 Nissan Versa 6spd manual hatchback (bought it brand new for $12k insane right!!). Loved that car but most importantly, the rear space was incredible! And folding the seats down, I could fit 3 full suspension enduro mountain bikes in in with all the gear! It was so good in that regard. It’s just not the same in my MK7 GTI, which is a letdown. But the GTI is so much better in so many other areas over the Versa.
Volswagen is known for subtle changes in Golf design from one generation to another, so you can always know - This is Gold. That is the case here too. No difference? Not for my eyes. 0:59, that radiator needs covering to avoid stone chip damage
@@chrislee6650 is it a style thing or a cost cutting measure why they have it open?
it's a AC condensor, there has to be an open grill on the front end of ICE cars for cooling, some vehicles like the abarth 595 will have the intercooler sit directly infront of the condensor but for most vehicles the cooling/opening is usually when the condensor/radiator is placed.
Huge amount of the grille open, more space for stones to hit the radiator!
Wish they brought back physical buttons and the the little space on the right hand side dash and the drawn under the 2 front seats
@2:30 How is this any different to using your mobile phone whilst driving? It's mental! I'd also find that screen super distracting. I prefer the screen being intergrated in the centre console lower down.
Because your phone isn't part of your car. Work it out, it's not difficult.
Or sticking a cheap tablet 😅
Operating it while driving is as illegal as using the phone ...at least in the countries I know (EU)
Looks awful! Whoever thought this was better than it being built into the dashboard?

I currently drive a Golf 7.5 and even that has commonly used functions that are only available via the screen, including changing the driving mode. Hiding basic functions on a touch screen is really annoying, and is one of the reasons I won’t buy another VW. At least they’ve fixed the steering wheel issue that people were having, now they just need to fix everything else they’ve broken.
I remember reading that Nissan has said they won’t put commonly used features, such as driving modes, temperature controls, etc, on the screen because they consider it to be distracting and dangerous. They definitely have a point.
You can change the driving mode on your 7.5 without even once using the touchscreen. Just press your Mode button multiple times.
Yet there still is no dials for the HVAC controls. Flimsy slide button. Mk7 and 7.5 were the best design in my opinion

Just like a toyota product
It is cheap 😂
When it comes to servicing these tablets I'm guessing that it's a lot easier to pull off a little trim strip, remove a couple of screws and then unplug it. Service would be a replacement for a new tablet. Sounds a lot smarter than pulling the dash apart to pull out the built in screen.
the touch screen climate controls are funny ...people actually pay premium for vw too lol compare it to a mazda 3 interior
Glad to see they have addressed a lot of the issues. But a Golf should be the definition of "go right ahead and buy it", let's hope they can find their way back to that level.
That era is over..so much competition now.
Everyone complains about the steering wheel touch sensitive buttons from the mk8. But the real crime there was the ac not being backlit. Like what on earth was that all about.
The physical buttons is a HUGE plus
Volkswagen were the cars in which you could just sit down and start driving. Everything was just perfectly in place. You could just drive without need for having a detailed study of your car‘s operating features. Which customer has ever asked for touch sliding buttons or control via touchscreen for functions so regularly used like a climate control? Hope Volkswagen turns around.
Did VW Lupo have climate control buttons?
Then Tesla came along and everything changed. That influence is car industry wide. Not just something only VW does.
Not only I would never want those touch sliding buttons, I dont believe I would ever remember to tap them twice to switch funcionality from climate control to seats heating control.

... and they would fix it completely when going back to mk 1.... some people are just not to be pleased in any way ... for example, the steering wheel now looks like we are back in 2002 ... touch sensitives been the best thing ever for me... in terms of design and haptics.
Don't change if it's not broken. Is that simple, nobody wants a feature just because it's new, people want something that is better.
Radiators are exposed which makes them prone to damage on faster roads. Looks like someone forgot about it.
When that parking camera jams, it stops you from being able to open the trunk. I know this from experience...
£600 For a new one...ANOTHER VW big warranty claim.....
Actually windows not going down is a feature. We don’t want hands hanging out of the window. Good work VW
8:58 the extra space in the back of the door pocket is for a traveling umbrella.
believe it or not - that extended hidden part of the door bin is called the “Vehicle Wallet” - it’s to put stuff in and hide it. Found that out on my Polo the other day :)
I wish we had this Golf in the USA. I like that some of the detailing is a bit more subtle than the GTI.
Man, i really ought to lock in and get myself one of these.
yes from the 2017 going up wards I would advise any one to go for it no doubt we have done the 2017 review golf review you can have a look at it if you dont mind
I simply love my fake exhausts on my 7.5 2019, High Line, 1.5 TSI EVO ACT (soo easy to maintain clean) AND of course my piano black gloss interior details. So discret and exclusive…!❤
The mk7.5 has the best interior with physical buttons. I would say if they do mk8 body kit with mk7.5 interior they have got an awesome car!
I was one of those that used to comment about needing manual buttons, then I bought a Tesla and I don’t miss them at all tbh.
Thanks for the video test.
They have improved this series, I think it can be said. This mild hybrid is a fine car, from several tests, the Plug-in has a very low fuel consumption even with flat battery, and they have kept (a good) diesel for those who drive tens of thousands of miles / year.
All in all, my favorite Golf remains the MK 7.5 though.
Hello
I don't agree with your verdict, because to spec an Audi A3 decently like the a mid-range VW Golf will cost so much more than "a bit more money". Try with a third more!
