His parents came from Tibet, and he was born in Solokhumbu so he is originally a Tibetan national who later acquired Nepalese citizenship for ease of livelihood. There is a large number of Indian Americans in the United States who have acquired American Citizenship. They are called People of Indian Origin (PIO) and Govt. of India has granted them many special rights and privileges including dual citizenship. Whichever citizenship a person obtains his originality never changes, an Indian remains and a Tibetan remains Tibetan. As such, it is a Tibetan national who had ascended Mount Everest with Edmund Hillary of New Zealand first time, though Nepal is right to claim it was a Nepalese Citizen who first set the record - there is no contradiction. No Tibetan Flag was available at that time in Nepalese shops, otherwise, he would definitely have carried one to the summit too. If we are to go by the flag alone, then India can also claim that it was an Indian who climbed Everest first as Tenzin Norgay also carried an Indian Flag to the top. What is of utmost relevance and importance is the ancestry and nationality, in both cases, he is unmistakably TIBETAN, not Nepalese or Indian!

Lot of the territories around Himalayan mountains all belong to Tibetan kingdom. Nepal’s northern regions of Sherpas, mustang, dolpos, Manang, all belong to Tibet. Likewise lot of Arunachal region of India where China’s causing trouble these days, and also part of northern Pakistan. These are all Tibetan people and used to be part of Greater Tibetan kingdom. It’s sad Tibet as a nation doesn’t exist anymore because of China.

If Tibet does gain independence in the future, which I doubt it will (sadly), I think Tibetan government won’t try to get back these regions that are lost to India, Nepal, and Pakistan, since it’s been a few generations and Tibetans will be satisfied they have a place to call home.

any one who speak a language does not mean that he is the citizen of that country. In the same way, tenzing sherpa spoke tibetan doesnot mean that he is an tibetan.
Sherpa people live at the high himalayan region of Nepal to border side of Tibet, china. So, He could speak the language.
He is a true son of Nepal. He raises the flag of Nepal at the top of the world showing his nationality and respect towards Nepal.
My fellow friend, nepalese people could speak indian doesnot mean that they are indian citizen.
I think it is a tibetan radio program, so he speaks in tibetan . :)

    • @ngawangdechen9378
      @ngawangdechen9378 10 років тому +15

True. Just cuz a person can speak Tibetan does not make him or her Tibetan.
What he says in the interview
      1) my mom and dad are Tibetan. But later came here and lived here.
      2) So, I was born here, Nepal.
      3) When I 1st came down to go for climbing, I didn’t know Nepali language nor English.(He had to gone to Darjeeling hoping to join Mt. expedition cuz, no westerners were not allowed in Nepal)
      4) I had no papers or documents at all.
      5) started living and climbing from India into Tibet.
      6) When i saw all the foreigners carrying their country flag, i went to market n bought an Indian National flag and Nepali National Flag.
      7) The expedition team gave me all the flags to carry cuz they were sure I would reach there on top. So I was carrying England, UNO, India and Nepal national flag when i 1st reached on top.
Tenzin Norgey speaks of Nepal, India and Tibet with love in his voice, calling each of them, our people, our land, our king and our Pandit Nehru. It seems he had equal feeling for all and had no problem being part of all 3 countries and took pride in it.
His future generation, they will and have chosen to which country they want to belong to. And they have chosen to be a Sherpa, Nepali.
So who r we to say what he is or not.
Bottom line= his parents were Tibetan.
He is Tibetan origin but born in Nepal.
The country that supported his dream of climbing MT.E. = India.
      (All said in the interview).

      ngawang dechen
First of thanks for sharing your thoughts,
Nepal is a country between two big asian countries, India and China. People of Nepal are "mongol origin" through tibet, china like sherpa, rai , limbu , magar, gurung, tamang, newar and "arya origin" like Brahamin,, Cheetri through india. Besides , Nepal is a multi-cultural, muti-lingual country.
      1. Nepal was a trade way between India and Tibet from past. so, Nepali people (sherpa from mountain) are used in huge number for the same purpose. and today we all know the controversy of China and India , Tibet alliance. (political issues, lets discuss this somewhere my friend)
      2. when he was asked, how sherpa people came to exist at the top himalayan of nepal, tenzing gives the logical answer that the mountain people along with his ancestor (sherpa people) has been migrating from mongolia, todays Tibet, China.
3 Nepal is a multi-lingual and multi-cultural country, there are more than hundred different races here in Nepal. In past, Nepal was a hindu kingdom. Only people of high hindu races like Brahamin were allowed to read and study. so, no sherpa at the time of tenzing in nepal has any formal or informal education to speak english or sanskrit(hindi). they only spoke their own language , sherpa language along with nepali language.
      4. Since, Nepali and Indian language are similar as originated from sanskrit. sherpa and tibetan language has a match in the same sense as originated from Mongolia . and long before the existence of todays nepal, india or tibet, sherpa and tibet, china people are mongol originated. It doesnot mean that all mongolian originated people from (Tibet)China, Nepal, Hongkon, Japan, Thialand, Bhutan are the nationality of Mongolia today.
      5. Besides, there has been always a free border between Nepal and India. People from himalayana, mountain and terai region of Nepal has been moving to India for job and money from the past. Besides, Darjeeling, Sikkim was a part of Old Nepal. Everyone knows that Nepali language is used in Darjeeling ,Sikkim still today. (this is a political issues and plz comment if you like to discuss about it also my friend : Sugauli Treaty). So, We nepali people have lot of friend , relative living there in Sikkim. It doesnot mean that any individual or tenzing love India.
      6. As i told before, Nepal was a hindiu Kingdom at the time of Tenzing Norgay. More than 90 percent, people in Nepal were uneducated. and there was no respect for the profession like Mountain Climber. Besides, Sherpa People were treated as lower caste , buddhist people at that time, when Hindi king and Hindu Kingdom was prevailing in Nepal. We have to say, this is the gratefulness of india that the educated and the forward people there ,respected him and used him for the benefit and provide Norgay the indian citizen honourly.
      7. Besides, once ruled by British, India has lots of internal airports, roads , media through which western would enter into nepal as still today there is only one international airports in Nepal. I must say, India has a good income from tourism still today because of backwardness of Nepal in transportaion and communication.
      8. As a porter, he carried everything as a part of job, he was told to. He might have even carried the flag from England, UNO and India besides his own birth country Nepal. It sounds logical for him to carry England , UNO flag as a part of expedition team . I see no information for him to carry Indian flag my friend. anyway, He raises and put the flag of Nepal.
      Bottom line My friend :
Sherpa are the one of the mongol race people whose origin was Mongolia along with Rai, Limbu, Tamang, Gurung, Newar people in Nepal and Tibetan people in China.
Tenzing was born in Nepal and a nepali citizen by his birth. (check wikipedia y fiend) He is known all over the world as a Nepalese Mountain Climber. He might have lot of friend in India and Tibet also.
All Sherpa people and climber are known all over the world as a pride of Nepal. Tenzing Norbu Sherpa - first sherpa Nepali to climb the Mount Everest
Pasang Lamhu Sherpa - first women sherpa Nepali to climb Mount Everest
and more than hundred of sherpa, Nepali climbs Mt Everst every year , i cannot list their name here, m sorry for that.
India is one of the country to visit today and I have friend in India and I know the Indian business market and their culture. We all know the issues for Buddha to be born in Nepal, Everest Issues, Sikkim Issues, Tenzing Norgay issues, Tibetan issues in facebook and all over the internet. One fact, i have seen lot of Tibetan using the name of sherpa and buddha for the highlight of their china-tibet issues (which nepali do not care) to the world .
Please do comment if you do not understand or would like to discuss on any of matter relating to my country Nepal.
      Thanking You my friend.

      Dear pal,
Thank you for sharing you knowledge and experience.
But i wasn't sharing my thoughts.
Just translated what he said in the interview in points.
he said so him self in the interview that he bough both Nepali and Indian flag from market and took it to the top along with 2 other flags.
But a strange fact, Tenzin norgey says in interview that he was born in nepal but parents were Tibetan.
His son, Zamling(Jamling Norgay) states differently in his book:Touching my father's soul: a Sherpa's journey to the top of Everest.
He says his father was a Tibetan.
Reading 1st few pages of the book would be enough.(just stating what i read).
Personally, being a Tibetan born in nepal, it doesn't matter to me if he is Tibetan or Nepali. To me, he was a humble soul who did something for every one.
But i would like to correct you on one part.ALL TIBETANS ACCEPT AND BELIEVE THAT BUDDHA WAS BORN IN LUMBINI. "Buddha being born in nepal" is an issue that nepal and india have. Tibetans dont care.So how are Tibetan using it as a highlight for china Tibet issue?
