Wedding Filmmaking Tips: CHASING THE NARRATIVE

  • I was knee deep in editing and just pressed record. I really wanted to talk about how to find your couples story. Prioritizing the narrative over cool drone footage, epic bridals, or anything else for that matter. I hope this video helps and I plan to make so many to follow this up. If you have any questions, drop them in the comments.

    I like your approach bro... honest and real. Just one thing... don't get caught in the mistake of thinking that soundbites are where the story lives... you can be a great visual storyteller and never rely on soundbites (Show, don't tell!). For me it's about being present, doing the pre-production and focusing on what is important to your clients. Sometimes, it's all about the details, decor, etc... other times it's about the emotional moments or party. Keep it up! Love!

    Bro thank you so much for stopping editing and sharing your knowledge on this. Many people dont take this into account when filming their weddings, story is SO important. You are someone that cares about their job as a wedding cinematographer, you are a fricken story teller with such moving films. Im going to try some of these tips when filming my next wedding. Like stuff with the bridesmaids during prep there is so much downtime a lot of the time that can be used as a creative to push the story forward. Bro you are so awesome this made me even more excited for the weddings I have this year!!

    This is so spot on. I have started include pre-wedding sessions and I feel more confident in creating the narrative now that I know the couple and their story. It feels really good that you verify that the ”perfect” shot is maybe not the best shot for the story.

    I have another take on controlling the narrative. Instead of giving the characters ideas of what to say, we should accept that some characters are introverts, extroverts, well articulated and not well articulated.
    When a character isn't giving us the necessary sound bites, we can also film them expressing the ideas through actions (wardrobe, gifts, actions).
    The probability of a story taking place during the wedding has a lot to do with how central it is to the character's lifestyle and personality.
    A bride who loves to create cartoon paintings for example, not just as a hobby, but is a part of her DNA is 99% likely to manifest this passion during the wedding in one way or the other either through themselves or the people around them.
    During the pre-interviews, for example, the answers may not be 100% truthful simply because of feeling the pressure to answer, so not even these are reliable. What is reliable, however, is that real true character is bound to manifest because that is who they are.
    Who we are as a person can never be muted. So as a documentary storyteller this is what we can rely on.

    • @JustinPorterMedia
      @JustinPorterMedia  Рік тому

      That’s such an awesome way to put it and I agree wholeheartedly. When I do get more introverted or “traditional” responses, I usually tend to lean to summoning family members to talk to them. Then we film the natural responses. The camera, the camera man, all of it tends to just take fear to whole new heights for people lol.
      Thank you for watching and supporting!
