Man I feel you but so many customers aren't willing to be open on their wedding day. They just want pretty. It's boring and truthfully the reason I don't post most of our work. Not that I don't love our customers, I really want to deliver them more, but most aren't open to it.

I just found this guy, what he does is mad, love it, he makes so many people their own personal show / movie for their wedding, that's dope. he's creating something even people that don't know the couple would want to watch

I lost my mom when I was 15 in 2009. She recorded everyday life, almost like a vlog but back in the 90s, since I was born, often with just her and I hanging out. I visit those often. I damn near cry every time I'm filming a mother/son dance, knowing I'll never have that and I hold it with the highest responsibility & honor to give them what I won't have but also, what I DO have, which is videos of my mother and I together. When I lost my dad late in 2021, my passion for this only became stronger as neither parent of mine was able to even see me engaged yet and hear what they had to say or what emotions were brought to their faces. These are the stories I'm chasing. This is my why. Justin, thank you SO much for this video and not making me feel alone in the world of other wedding filmmakers out there, I knew there was a reason I felt so connected to your films. Now I know. I'm sorry for the loss of your father & more importantly, I'm so glad you found reason with it and purpose to drive you forward.

First off, very sorry to hear about your father, secondly, it was super interesting hearing a pros take on the wedding industry, a wedding piece should be a mini documentary filled with all the niche things that makes this specific family worth wild, like you said, enough of the slowmo buttoning up of the jacket. Definitely seen the same video over and over. Your wedding videos are absolute killer, and I’m curious, but you ever consider branching off every now and then just for your own sanity? Great video bro!

I love you man. You're a huge inspiration to me as a person, and as a teacher on how to fuse business, art, and personability.
I'm a screenwriter and come from a narrative/storytelling film background, and never imagined doing weddings - I saw them as stressful & generic. It's only recently I started seeing them as a rare opportunity to capture the raw moments and tears that actors work for on screen. It seems like a waste of emotion to have a couple pose and pretend, when their real life is the true movie magic.
I think the tricky thing when starting out is finding clients who value video enough to invest in that vérité-style documentary experience. A lot of couples only want to spend a few hundred bucks to look good, and don't know the potential of video - that low demand results in a supply of wedding films that resemble Trey's spoof. That said, I'm sure your work will be part of the change in how couples value video :)
I'll try this again but without the link this time. I feel a good series of reading for this approach for anyone are the articles on nomadland and Terrence malick's movies the tree of life and the new world in the American society of cinematographers as they really delve into the idea of building empathy and celebrating the freeform nature of life itself while telling a story.
My friends got married 3 weeks ago, and they didn’t have a filmer or photographer to capture their wedding day, so I decided last min to record on my iphone 14pro on cinematic mode. Obviously phone cameras don’t compare to DSLRs but my phone was my only option. To my own surprise, the video came out okay (nothing compared to something professional) and to people who don’t really know about cameras, the fake iphone blur wasnt a problem, and the couple loved the video. I even saw some videos of how to film a wedding afterwards, and they all had the same shots (dress shots, pointing and laughing shots etc).
I came across your videos recently and I love ur approach on filming wedding videos and story telling, not doing the usual wedding video.) I wouldn’t consider myself a film maker or even a noob, but I definitely want to get into cinematography and ur convincing me to go out and buy a camera now. I will definitely be watching ur videos from now on and hope to learn from you, your definitely changing the way I see filming, story telling is the real beauty

That is an excellent summary, Justin. As a filmmaker, I struggle with being continuously pushed into the shadow of photographers and their " picture-perfect setups." The challenge with destination weddings I experience is meeting the couple on their Big Day. Phone or ZOOM consultation with the couple before is great but still limited. The "wedding culture" labels filmmakers as the second priority, and the Timeline of the wedding day designed by wedding coordinators in Resorts is always toward the photographer. I have to be highly creative to have quality time one-on-one to have story-based footage that I already agreed with the couple during their consultation! Destination weddings are genuinely unforgiving, fast passed, tight, and, sorry to add, unorganized. So my work is in a vortex of chaos most of the time. Over many years I tried numerous technics to influence my workflow so I can deliver what I was hired for, but I admit that is a constant challenge. 🤣
There is deep connection between film/video and death phenomenon. According to old mystical idea that dead people are going to world of shadows, yet film is made form light and shadows. Film can serve as a visual and auditory record of a person's life, allowing us to continue to see and hear them even after they are gone. video film has the power of condensed time from its disintegration. film saves time from rotting. We need to convey this approach to clients that investing in video is like investing in the future for our descendants, that it is a form of quality family heritage.
I love this a lot ! When I was doing wedding videos , I hated them bc I thought the regular (footage plus music ) was what it had to be . Then I saw your videos and alittlelongdistance videos and it completely changed it for me! I now get to excited to film and try to mic up as many people or get convos that are happening

Couldn't agree more!! Most wedding films I see are less about the couples and more about the filmmakers trying to force emotion with style rather than content.
Once again, it's interesting. This time you get more personal and dig deeper in your own paths.
Without knowing, you've just given all the necessary justification to my own project. Now that I've had a hint of your story, it's no surprise to me that my project has similarities with yours.
The way people go similar ways when they've had similar experiences is sometimes weird. But this is what makes human beings, with their billion differences. This is, in a way, the salt of life.
Keep on doing what you do best, your folks love the way you tell stories. And I'll do my best to give birth to my project.

Wow I just found your channel and I am currently just starting making a name for myself in the wedding filmmaking industry in Germany and those videos of you… you talked straight into my soul and now something surfaced to why I really wanted to shoot weddings. It’s to be a good storyteller and telling the authentic stories and not the beautiful montages. But the real story the real reason.

JP talking truth this week! The wedding industry definitely needs to hear this for both video AND photo. We've all been doing things the same for way to long. Time to shake it up!
I'm on the same page, i've started filming weddings when i started video generally and mostly for the money and networking.. At the beggining i've hated it, they gave me low salary, i found it boring etc. When i started earning more and having good partners i've started enjoying it and trying ways to do some more stuff but mostly they were as you say, cinematic this, that and 4k. I'd like to approach it your way but 1stly in my country it doesn't pay so much for the effort and 2nd the type of marriage approach and the places don't give much content as in U.S.A.
We don't give speaches, we don't say vowels, we don't cry so much, it's just a wedding and maybe you'll find some parties thrown and some craziness, nothing more in small appartments, some christianic churches which most of them are small and give a sad mood.
Basic salary is 800euros and there are some old timers with old gear charging a wedding 800 with 2 guys for photo/video.
We do it around 2k with 4 guys, fx3's sony a7 iv etc and only very rich people could pay more. I've always dreamed moving to U.S especially after my visit and thinking of trying to work there as a wedding film maker just after seeing all the content you guys post on youtube
This is definitely the direction I want to move in,. I want to capture the story of family before and after the wedding day. Thanks for sharing and inspiring.

I myself aspire to be better at video making and providing the best to our clients and it’s with videos like these that pull us out of the realm of what everyone is doing and keep us focused on what’s best for the client instead of trying to impress our colleagues. Great stuff! It’s been said before but I think it heavily depends on the couple and who the couple hires as the photographer. Those two things affect how much creative control we have to tell the story. The more video is seen as a necessity and not a luxury, we all will be able to reach this level of quality. It will take time though, thanks for using your platform to contribute to the shift! It’s an exciting time to be a wedding filmmaker!

I feel like it's no right or wrong on how to film weddings because at end of the day, we all find our own style. It's a service and the end goal is to make sure the couples are happy with their film. I know down where I'm from, most couples just want a simple nice video to cherish.

Seriously so many times i felt this way that we shouldnt shoot evry wedding in same way we shoot the previous wedding but clients expect n compare to that about the previous wedding film.Wish your words come true with the bride and groom so that we can tell a story not just to impress client but to capture their best day of their life

I had same idea long ago. That the most wedding what I saw in the Netherlands are nearly the same. Unnecessary slow motion, same shots, pretending scene and not spontaneous, too much cinematic scene and music, no real sound recording, too much focus on the bride and groom rather than with friends and family as a whole.
Each wedding event is unique from each other. Especially from different culture and family community.

The other two questions are lengthy but one filmmaker I’m obsessed with is Tyler Perry. He built an empire and it’s so inspiring especially as a black filmmaker. I also love Jordan Peele. He has a mind like no other and he’s on to greatness himself as well.
