And there’s also Toadies Pecan Coffee. I think, still. The lead singer/songwriter/rhythm guitarist, Vaden, had a band in the early 00’s called Burden Brothers, with some other notable musicians, Taz Bentley and Casey Orr, that released some very well crafted music. I still consider “Mercy” in my top 3 albums of all time. That album has the most *in tune* instrumentation that I’ve ever heard. I guess that’s what it is. It’s something. Maybe, I can’t quite put my finger in it.

I love how you talk about the 'unproduced' quality of this album. I'm by no means a musician or an expert in musical production, but I do love this unpolished aspect of it all. Incidentally, this same quality is what I love most about Ivy's debut album, Realistic, from 94/95. Amazing.

The Toadies are one of the most under-rated rock bands of the 90's. They literally couldn't pinpoint a genre for them, because they didn't fit into one. Some tried to place them under metal, others alternative. Possum Kingdom was their biggest radio hit, and Rubberneck is an AMAZING album. All of their albums are great. Check them all out!!!

I'm from Graham, Texas where this song is a reference to... and I went to the University of North Texas, which is where this band formed. They used to perform at the school a lot. The lead singer was a Baptist minister's son and had a lot of trouble coming to terms with what his father taught him. "Do you wanna die" is a reference to the scare tactic that Baptist preachers used, known as "Hell and Brimstone" teaching. The ice statue of Mary in the video represents how his beliefs were melting into the heat of hell/heat of Possum Kingdom (which, in the summer, can sure feel like you're in hell... hot and muggy!!). And, of course, the entire song then becomes about him killing his own belief system. As a Christian, I find it sad... but also relatable. The purpose of the 15-beat measures is that it never quite feels settled. Just as you get settled into the rhythm, you suddenly find yourself out of it again. He could never quite "settle in"to believing.
I absolutely love this song, as a musician. Thanks for playing along with it... the piano added something for me that my ear didn't know it needed!

This entire album is great! The most popular songs from it, as I remember, were Possum Kingdom, Away, Tyler, I Come From the Water, and Backslider. Back in 2004 I discovered they had a couple more albums, but they never really got radio play on a national level like Rubberneck did. But on their 2001 "Hell Below/Stars Above", a song that really stuck out was called "Jigsaw Girl". It's kinda creepy, like in an "Every Breath You Take" sort of way, but I love the dynamics, and it's just a really well written song.

I wasn't blown away with it at first, but once I learned the song all the way through (I was playing guitar) I was impressed with some of the nuance in it, which really gave me a solid appreciation for the song. Possum Kingdom is a lake in Mineral Wells, Texas. I remember when this happened. A dead woman's body was found there. I think she had been raped, too. Vaden Todd Lewis explains in a rubberneck documentary that his song "Possum Kingdom" is a continuation, Part 2, of his song, "I Burn". In his song "I Burn", Vaden Todd Lewis explains he had a dream of a religious cult member who burns himself in a bonfire in order to go to Heaven, but instead he goes to Possum Kingdom. His spirit is floating around Possum Kingdom, lonely, and wanting a female companion. So he is trying to talk this woman into killing herself too so that he will have a spiritual partner and not be lonely anymore.

Yes, Toadies are still performing after 30-something years. They are my favorite band! I am going to see them again soon August 25, 2022 at Lava Cantina in The Colony, Texas. They are a Texas band. Vaden Todd Lewis is from Fort Worth. I am also from North Central Texas. I've seen them many times. I was 20-something when they started. Now I'm 50-something, just like Vaden Todd Lewis. We're the same age. I love Toadies even more now. I didn't appreciate them as much as I appreciate them now. I was too busy at the time with life but now I have more time. Vaden Todd Lewis has not mellowed one bit, just like I haven't, although he does sometimes forget the lyrics. I think it"s all the beer he drinks. Whatever, I love him! He is so real and raw and unpretentious. Rock on.

Toadies are still around today. This year they are celebrating the 28th Anniversary of Rubberneck by playing it in its entirety. Unlike most bands who go through drummers during their popularity. The Toadies went through 4 drummers before ever signing a record deal. Singer/Guitarist Vaden Todd Lewis and Drummer Mark 'the 5th drummer' Reznicek have been in the band since 89 and 91 respectively. Seek out their self released documentary "Dark Secrets - The Stories of Rubberneck" on UA-cam. It shows them in and out of the studio. Todd breaks down each of the songs on the album anecdotally. He even reveals what Possum Kingdom is about.

I found it very interesting how you mention that the time signatures often found in alternative/grunge would never have been accepted back in the 50s or 60s as it would have ruined the dance appeal of a song, which was never an issue with the grunge scene - something I’ve never really considered before. With that said, ironically Possum Kingdom has a certain groove and flow to it which can get heads bopping, unlike a typical (for example) Soundgarden or Alice in Chains song. I think it’s the dominant bass line coupled with that riff

The 7/8 is a hook. One of many in this tune. Great song. BTW I'm pretty sure she wasn't playing a Rick on the recording although she did play one on stage most of the time.

Living in Oklahoma City about 3 hour North of Fort Worth heard this song a lot in '94, ' 95 still comes on local rock radio. "Tyler"is another dark themed banger. "I come from the water", "Backslider", "I burn" all great songs from Rubberneck. The have several albums that have Texas grunge. Then they did an acoustic album called Heretics remaining a lot of the fan favorites. Cool cool band

In my opinion, one of the most underrated bands in the early 90s. That said, this was an incredible time for alternative music, so this amazing album “Rubberneck” fell by the wayside more than it should have. I have an addiction to the raw sound. Early nirvana, early white stripes. I have a belief that the more production the band has, the less feeling the song has (not always true, 21 pilots and Manchester orchestra have used production effectively), but as a general thing, raw is better in my mind.
