- The Toadies perform multiple takes of Possum Kingdom, I Come From the Water, and Away on MTV's 120 Minutes. Todd Lewis and Lisa Umbarger then sit down for an interview. There are a few audio and visual screw-ups here and there, but this is the best quality I could manage to get.
That bassist kicks ass. She's got killer stage presence to match her rad bass skills. Her and the drummer play really fucking good together. Great back bone to the band.
It’s a little hard to hear her but that bass tone is amazing too. In the early days Lisa went super trebley and sharp, but here it sounds like a semi truck.
Really wish the original members stayed together, but Interscope straight up refused to release their second album for years and they lost all momentum.
She really is!
And if she wanted you, she would push you down and TAKE you. And that is that!

Are you sure about that? I see that she was diagnosed with cancer a couple years ago but it was in remission and I can’t find anything about her dying

Met Todd and Lisa outside of Trees in Deep Ellum after they just played a show. Me and my friends were late, so late we saw them coming out of the side entrance with their equipment and flagged them down. The entire band exhausted after a show took their time to autograph some swag for us and I traded Todd a clove for a cigar. It was like meeting Elvis in the 90s.
I actually met her yesterday at lolas in fw texas. Shes good friends with my dads friend who is also in a band. Pretty badass!
Came for the performance, but stayed for the interview. Todd and Lisa should have had their own sitcom based on this interview alone. 🤣
I always loved this guitarist; they were never the same after he left; such an amazing sound and use of the whammy bar.
Top20 album ever made.
"Rubbermeck"
that tone he gets out of that Strat is amazing!!
yup
Hot Rail bridge pickup
He was the best guitarist they had. Lisa was the best bassist they had as well.
Saw them tonight and they still rock hard ass🤘🤘
I saw them yesterday and yes, they still kick ass! I was front and center at the rail. And had to defend my position a lot! Drunken young girls are f'ing insane and pushy and scratch to try to get up front! I'm 50, I had to school a few of them as this was not my first rodeo lol
@@mteige I was front and center on the rail myself. I am 58, glad I didn't have any drunken anybodies to fight off🤘❤️
Raw talent.
This is music, kids.
love those 7 chords! rubberneck is such a great album
43 now. This song was huge to me in highschool. It's hard to be in love
Dudes drumming and casually smoking. Lol hes a legend.
Just saw them again 2 years ago at a small venue and they were amazing.
saw them live recently best concert i’ve been to they’re still awesome
If I could sound like Eric Clapton, be as smooth as Elvis Presley, and dance like Michael Jackson, I would still want to play like Van Todd Lewis with Toadies.... No doubt
You are a credit to society. This is my thoughts exactly. This is a rather obscure song and most won't see this comment, but most people don't know good music when they hear it. Thank you sir. You are a GD American patriot and I would mow your lawn if you took vacation
Thank you for whomever posted this, you will forever be in my cool book.
I wish the set included Tyler at least once... one of the top 10 rock bands from TX in my opinion
I would go as far to say, not just Texas, in the world for me. Or top 15 world wide, for sure.
they got a lot of shit for those lyrics...Tyler was the name of a town in Texas where something bad happened. dark lyrics about stalkers, weird religious stuff (he was wearing a tshirt with Jesus on it when i interviewed them)...i loved that guitarists noisey playing, really brought something to the songs that often goes overlooked--but youd notice if it wasnt there. Rubberneck was a perfect album, but they had cool stuff before and after
Anybody know what happened to Baboon? Love those guys, too...
YES
Lisa looks like she doesn't think she's pretty but she really is look at those eyes!!
Check out her new band, SolShifter!
yes
This is such a great performance. Thanks for posting!
Lumbergh on vocals when he was young before he went corporate and asked you to work on Saturday -and- Sunday.
Yeah hi.....I'm gonna need you to comin on Sundays as well. We lost some people over the weekend ..sooooo we sort need to play catchup!
Kenny Powers on drums and Kyle MacLachlan on guitar.
Todd always creeped me out in the best way. It's like he has tons of soul and no soul at the same time.
R u on meth??
Or maybe u should be..
Or try acid broooooo
The Bassist creeped Me out . Serial killer vibes
i just wish i grew up in that time to experience all the amazing bands )): i grew up in the early 2000s so all i got to experience was stupid shows and the last bit of mtv trl. which trl was nice but not 120 minutes nice
@@boogy999I feel you there , let’s go to Area 51 and get that Time Machine
Definitely 😂 it seems several songs off Rubberneck were about raping and or killing a girl. I actually live close to the town of Tyler and saw them play about a decade ago. Album quality show. They're remarkable live.
That slowed down version of "I come from the water" is so fucking badass!
Nice!! Love away, one of my favorite Toadies songs. Keep these vids coming, dude!
The most underrated guitarist ever!!!!!
Killer tune💖 has longevity very creative song love how the drummer hammers them hard
Man The Toadies are STILL one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE bands. I feel they are underappreciated, except for Texans, they're proud of their Toadies, and that RULES, go Texas, way to support such a bad ass band.
Every time I've seen them here in Seattle they've been incredible. Starting for me with the Rubberneck tour when they opened for The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I got a black eye at that show cuz I'm tiny and I took a doc marten to the face from a kicking crowd surfer, in fact under my eye was not just bruised but busted open too.
I also left with some random dudes blood on my shirt. This was all just during The Toadies set too!
Texas produces and has produced some of the most unique creepy bands...i hear some paul leary in the lead guitarists noisey feedback accents
@@DaveAnchovies Love Baboon, too. Wonder whatever happened to those guys.
@@thisfireburns9474 I have a couple Baboon CDs. Tripping Daisy and UFOFU as well.
Thanks so much for this upload.
Thank you so much for the upload, never saw this before.
Legendary. Vaden in his prime. What a fucking beautiful moment captured in time.
I forgot about that style of 90s talk the girl is doing. I think it evolved from people being exposed to hippy impressions, SNL skits, and Beavis and butthead. I think it made it easier to be sociable in new crowds
fucking Phat! amazing guitar tones and it helps the songs fucking rule!!! these guys were better then most ppl know.......
Lisa is such a badass bass player! 🤘

Check out her new band, SolShifter!
Looks a dude with long hair? Oopps !!
Toadies should have toured with bands like ned's atomic dustbin, mega city four, pavement, face to face, dinosaur jr, HUM.
Interscope dropped the ball on them and a few other bands chasing the hip-hop money. Possum wasnt even a hit until a few years after the album was out. there were at least 3 singles on that album. The major label band destruction. Interscope Geffen Warner Bros the worst...evil. They shoulda toured with other bands on the label like Rocket From the Crypt.
@@DaveAnchovies I'll tell you what labels have fucked over a lot of bands, but have also produced some incredible records out of it.
Bands on the same label generally toured together back in the 90s. Last time I saw Ned's Atomic Dustbin it was August 18, 1995 (their last performance before they split up in NYC) and they were opening for Letters to Cleo and Sponge, who were both on the Columbia label, I believe? Music is a still a business first, even if fans like us don't see it from that perspective. The warm up band for the opener who's on before the headliner is often just whoever is going to be touring in that city at the right time and might be a good "fit" for the lineup.
Bands on different labels are rarely in the "right" city on the "right" night to be on the same lineup without being on the same label. Sure, it can and does happen, but it's luck and coincidence, if a label or tour manager who works for the label isn't making it happen.
@@le_th_ I totally get what you mean, it's just that I listen to all those bands and I think of how amazing those parings could have worked out, but of course you are correct.Their is a new tour for toadies now where they are touring with toad and the wet sprocket and hoodie and the blowfish, which makes no sense what so ever; great bands, but the comparison is so far off.
i fucking love hum
what a band!!!!
When MTV use to play videos non of this teen mom crap
Brian Donoho because back then it was music television not made for 12 year old television
Why would they play videos when you can watch whatever video you want on UA-cam? Doesn’t make sense financially
15:55 Away
enough said
Goddamn, Lisa! She always killed it
Wish lisa was still in as bassist
Check out her new band SolShifter!
I love how normcore they dress but sort of not (his chokers) yet it's still obvious he's definitely a dark weirdo freak...🍊🔥🧡❤🔥and that moment at 21:06 when they laugh because they're waiting on the guitarist to start 😶🌫
La bajista y el baterista estan enfermos, que estilo loco.
Danny Mcbride on the drums
Lol, I swear I was gonna say the same thing!
I've never seen an extended interview like this with Todd Lewis before, and Rubberneck (which by the way is possibly the most underrated hard rock album of all time) makes a lot more sense to me now. Almost every song has clear themes of romantic frustration, alienation, repressed rage, childhood trauma, etc. Here he comes across as a skinny, nervous guy who likes to play the guitar and hang out with his best buddy Lisa Umbarger but probably is very awkward around women in general. Might have been bullied a lot. Wouldn't be surprised if one or both parents were neglectful or abusive.
Anyway, where did you get this? Were you an intern at MTV back then or something? It's an amazing find, thanks so much!
I liked All I want by Toad the Wet Sprocket. They win best frogs of the 90's.
Fukin luv the beastie refetence!
those video skips really standout when you’re using bluetooth speakers
I had that same orange sport shirt when I was in the Dutch army.
Phenomenal..that’s all I
Get well Lisa.i meet her a couple.🤘🏻🎱🤘🏻
Fucking Brilliant
Wow, almost forgot about this band. Have this CD somewhere in storage. Wonder if they're still around
Yes, they are still around. I live in Dallas and see them 3 times a year.
They’re still putting on live shows. Go check them out. Better that u could imagine.
Never really went away. Some great albums
Lance Armstrong on vocals
The interviewer makes this sound like a deposition or some investigation. Every time things seem to be lightening up the interviewer throw a question in an almost suspicious or accusatory tone. That network should probably drift away from music and get more into reality tv
Never saw this version of I Come from the Water before with the guest sax player. Guess they were into experimenting with different instruments and arrangements way before Heretics.
RIP Lisa
These people got nothing but good things to say
19:15 Yeahcah
I wonder if bands look back at past interviews where they’re smart assess being sometimes just obnoxious, and regret it. Growing up on this stuff as a teen it was cool, but now I’m like wow just leave if you don’t want to be there
? It’s all in good humor.
Seems like he has trouble hitting that high note in away.
I like Darrel Herbert and Clark Vogeler
Who is guest on sax? Never seen this b4 Very cool!
Bassist rips!
check out!
carlos menstealia on drums
Take one...wait, what? "Lets try that again". Oh piss off with that
It's too bad UA-cam policies sensor the lyrics. 🤐 😡 #pro1stamendment
Fuck I forgot how heavy they were.
Made my night, uh... Thanks google I guess? I mean yeah, good job but kinda creepy not gonna lie. How's my lighting?
The lighting is good. Too good...
Possum kingdom is about a vampire and his next victim, weather she will be his vamp bride or..his next meal
Actually it's about a serial killer
Yea it's about a serial killer dude...
Todd once said Possum Kingdom was like a part 2 to "I burn". He said I burn was about someone burning themselves alive to reach a level of transcendence and Possum Kingdom was the second part where the now immortal person/spirit is trying to get a girl to go the same way he did and join him in eternal life.
Did they mean the Jerky Boys? I honestly don't remember the Beastie Boys prank calling people, but maybe I missed the joke.
A young Artie Lange on drums back there lol
Thorne Parke WAAAAAHHHH!!
FIIYYAHH
Heroin is better for the liver...
so people that kill women either sexually creepy or really anyway along with people who with the horton heat well they need music to relate to as well i hate alot of as much as the next asshole but za music is a human right... these guys are underrated i love that there the only onces who seem to put out a song not to identify with themselves but for that super rare demogtaphic that we wish didnt but totally exists and need something to listen to while their tip toeing down back roads destroying evidence the the girthy arm law closes in on them lol
Amazing how you can make a career off one good song
Many great albums
Lots of great songs besides Possum Kingdom. Check Tyler, I Come From the Water, Backslider, etc… all kick ass.
