Possum Kingdom is one of those songs that comes along that you just can’t help but love. That is a female bassist!! Lisa is so underrated so is the band in the whole as The Toadies goes. Love this freakin band!
Yes!!! Figured someone all ready commented on the female being a bassist and also underrated.
The whole album kicked ass
I've seen them live at least 15 times through the years, and it never gets old! This is a great band!
My 90s goth teen heart, flying high on Interview With a Vampire, was convinced this was a super awesome vampire invitation, lol.
Good song. These guys are from Texas and Possum Kingdom is lake in Texas. It's the area they are from and hold a festival there every year.
PK baby! Been there many many times.
I always thought this song had a vampiric meaning, but sometime not too long after this song was released, I saw a crime documentary about what are called the Possum Kingdom murders. Apparently that's what this song is about.
Dia de los Toadies!
No truer words 👏😊
James what’s the festival called??
Possum Kingdom is a lake in Texas, with a lot of vacation housing around it. The song is based on the various local myths and ghost stories around the area.
One of the most underrated rock bands ever. Rubberneck is a masterpiece
I've always thought of the Toadies as a bit like the Pixies-meet-Metallica-covering ZZ-Top.
The song, "Possum Kingdom," is a sequel to "I Burn," and is a metaphysical tale about the spirit of a man returning from a voluntary, ritual, fiery death (in "I Burn") as a member of a death-cult, to entice a woman to join him in the afterlife by also sacrificing herself through fire. Possum Kingdom, as mentioned in other comments, is a man-made lake in Texas where people boat, fish, swim, dive, hike, rock climb, etc. There is no murder/stalker tale specific to the lake that fits in time or character to the song, but it has created a lot of folklore and assumption to that effect, especially since Vaden Lewis (lead singer/writer) let people run with the speculations until years later, knowing it was part of the buzz around the song. BTW, the song "Tyler" had similar folklore develop to create a backstory, but it was merely inspired by a rumor of a peeping Tom Lewis heard when visiting family in the Tyler, TX area.
Lisa Umbarger is the original bassist. She left after tiring of BS with the label getting the 2nd album made and promoted.
The name "Toadies" is meant sarcastically/ironically in the usual sense of "one who deferentially supports and fawns over a dominant figure; a sycophant." I say "ironically" because they've always had plenty of attitude and vibed a bit cynical.
They're one of the best live bands ever, still, though I miss the vibe of seeing Lisa jamming out in her Dallas Stars jersey.
Rubberneck is one of those rare flawless rock albums.
BTW, their later albums are also great. They really just fell through the cracks due to a shitty label not promoting them and bad timing with the marketing bent of the music industry at the moment. So, after Lisa left they took a break and then reformed in the later Aughts after losing their momentum. So they've become, for the most part, a cult band popular with OG fans and Texas (especially DFW) natives. If you ever get a chance to see them live I promise you'll be glad you did.
Love this
Saw Vaden and the drummer playing Acoustic in '17 at a small comedy club in Plano. My buddy and I catered the show of about 75 people....they played after our service. It was an amazing show, played 2 hrs and almost worked in every tune. After Vaden was signing and taking pictures. I didn't want to fanboy so I stood back. So he called me over at the end to get a picture with him and I. Was a really fun night.
I haven't seen anyone saying that the woman was their bassist. Lisa Umbarger was their bassist at the time.
Try "I come from the water" by the Toadies--real jam
Please god no, no more Toadies reactions. They can listen to this stuff on their own time.
The Toadies are from FT Worth,TX. I have seen them lived 5-6 times and love every live show. This album is really good.
I always thought this song was about a vampire wanting to turn a girl he's interested in, making her immortal.
Exactly!
Another quintessentially 90s song. Greatest decade of all time.
Thank you for reacting to this on my bday! ♊️
a toadie is also a term used to describe underlings, or followers. A person who flatters or defers to others for self-serving reasons.
The band's classic lineup consisted of Vaden
Todd Lewis (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Lisa Umbarger (bass guitar),
Darrel Herbert (lead guitar), and Mark Reznicek (drums).
so yes.. the bass player is a female, or a man named Lisa
A Toady is someone who does what they are toad...
@@thisSOBRocks toadie not toady
Whole album is great!!! “I Come From the Water” and “Backslider” are both fun tunes but I would have to say my favorite is “Away”!
What about Tyler!?! It's the best?!
Mexican hairless is awesome too
Tyler!
Quitter has always been my favorite
God I love this song, the 90s was a special time for music🖤🤘
Amen 🙏 🤘
I've always interpreted the song as a vampire trying to allure a woman in with the promise of immortality. Which makes sense now that I think of it, since we often take real life horror stories and try to lighten them up with monsters instead of depicting actual humans doing horrific things. It's thought provoking.
I totally agree
Exactly. It's horror, fantasy.
Wrong
I thought the same thing for years when it came out then found out real story behind it and was like I still like the vampire aspect better..the real story is super dark!
Yes I thought a vampire too but it’s a serial killer collecting beautiful young women die young stay young forever
This song has always reminded me of the movie Interview with the Vampire movie.
Would you please give Soundgarden a listen? Start with "Outshined", "Fell On Black Days" or "Rusty Cage". Thanks!
"Mailman"!!!!
I love this album. "Tyler" and "I Burn" are also great
Exactly!
Ditto! Especially Tyler. My favorite song on the album, for sure.
Happy Face is great as well
This song is the aftermath of I burn actually. This is after he jumps into the flames and acends, he needs someone to die and walk with him through time.
I really like backslider
Possum kingdom is a lake in North Texas around the area where the Toadies are from it's a story about a cult that immolates themselves to ascend, this song tells the story of a cultist looking for someone to join him...........also check out Tyler by the same band an even darker song than this
Tyler is so good!
I suggest if you haven't already.. you react to Filter - Nice Shot
Yes!
Or Welcome to the Fold
Agreed
Awesome song from an awesome era. Can’t wait to see y’alls reaction 🤘🏼🖤🤘🏼🖤
Toadies - From the great Austin TX. Another good song from them is Tyler.
They are from Ft. Worth, not Austin.
Jim Booth crap...my bad. They used to play here so much I just assumed.
I love Backslider
Away and You're the Song I Hate are good ones too
Always on my playlist when I’m going down the music I listened to in highschool rabbit hole.
I had the pleasure of seeing them live twice. The first time was just about the time their first album dropped at an outdoor festival. The bassist was a BAMF chick, they sounded fantastic. The funniest part was when the guitarist had a solo, he would turn away from the audience and seemed almost shy about being on stage. The second time, the bassist had been replaced (it was like 10 years later or so) by a dude and they were playing a local spot so I went with some friends because we loved the music. Again, they sounded fantastic. The best part was that there was some drunk dipstick in the crowd who yelled, "PLAY TYLER!" after EVERY number. They played for a little under an hour when they finally played Tyler. I'm guessing, since it's one of their most recognizable and popular songs, they save it for later. After the song ended, same dipstick yells, "PLAY TYLER!" Lead singer loses his damn mind. For a good five minutes yelling at dude, did he not just hear them play his damn song? The crowd loses its collective mind, laughing at drunk dude, cheering lead singer's rant, basically having a good ol' time at dipstick's expense. They play a few more songs, with not a peep out of anyone about Tyler for the rest of the night. Happily, I got a second serving of my personal favorite, I Come From the Water. If you have a chance to see them live, they kill it.
Also, Possum Kingdom is the name of a lake and state park near Dallas, TX. They are from the Metroplex so there are a few references to the area and state in their music.
Omg how was it seeing them live
@@Hollywood6IX They are one of a few bands I've seen that do justice to themselves live. They seem to truly love to perform and they do it very well. Their concerts tend to feel like a jam with friends. Despite the dark lyrics of some of their music, it's a good time and well worth the effort to go see them live.
Awesome reaction Guys! I love This song. I still own this Cd..Such a great Era of Music.
I also saw them play a houseparty right before this album dropped. This song is a tie in to the song I Burn on this same album. I Burn is about a guy who sets himself on fire to reach a higher plane. This song is about his spirit being trapped at Possum Kingdom lake. He finds a woman that he loves and is trying to convince her to join him for eternity. That is why at the end of the video the guy is carving an angle out of an ice block.
They had quite a few bad ass songs including one that was used on The Crow: City of Angels soundtrack called "Paper Dress". One of my favorites from them is "I Burn" and another hit they had on the radio was "I Come From The Water".
P.S. Another dark song from that era is "Waters Edge" by Seven Mary Three.
nobody ever talks about what a badass song Backslider is by them. even used in a cpl movie soundtracks
This band is incredible! This entire album is incredible, and 90% of subsequent albums!
On this album "Rubberneck " there are some really great songs. Possum Kingdom being one, Away , I Come From The Water, Tyler, I Burn. hell the whole album , debut album by the way is really really great. I highly suggest just getting /listening to the whole CD.
I agree 100%.
(Not that my "Stamp of Approval" means anything.) 😂
Love me some Toadies, though.
The entire album is amazing. One of my favorites.
Holla from Dallas. Next to PANTERA, The Toadies are the band that Dallas natives like myself are most proud to call our own.
I wouldn’t call them a “one hit wonder”... I’d say it’s more accurate to call them a 4 or 5 hit wonder... especially songs from their debut album which this song was off of, had a ton of hits... songs like “Tyler”, “I come from the water” , “Backslider”, and “I Burn”... it’s a shame their second album didn’t get as much airplay, cause I think I might actually like their second album the most.... maybe...
Anyway... it’s cool to see you give a couple Dallas bands some love... we don’t got nearly as big of a music scene as we should for how big our metroplex is... even compared to Austin and Houston, the list of musicians who made it out of local fame to nation coverage is way way too small.
Metallica: "Master of Puppets", another truly iconic song with a deep dark message in the lyrics. You Need to check it out!!!
Possum Kingdom is a lake in Texas. Great live band!!!
The Toadies one of the most underrated bands of the 90’s and to this day my absolute favorite 😎❤️
Lisa Umberger!!! Yeah the bassist!!! She has an awesome podcast called Jackalope tales totally go check it out!!!
I’m connected with their bass player (Lisa) & found this by accident... I’m going to share with her if that’s cool... BTW, Possum Kingdom is a lake out west of Ft. Worth...
The whole album is boss. I Burn and I Come From the Water are my favs
"I Burn" is a prelude to this song. Check out Dark Secrets, it explains a lot of their songs from Todd Lewis himself.
I highly suggest reacting to New Millennium Cyanide Christ by Meshuggah. It’s from their “earlier” era, and the ending breakdown has some SERIOUS groove 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻
You can really destroy Hollywood’s day with Nirvana’s “Polly”.
Good idea
I used to go listen to this group when I was in high school. My uncle Sid had a lake house on Possum Kingdom. When the Toadies hit it big I felt like my youth was suddenly in the spotlight!
Hi, guys! I really love your reactions and I always wait for you to upload a new one! Thank you so much for you passion, guys, you are so funny and lovable! :)
Thank you for the love and support!
@@smokeyrameriz478 Thank you, Smokey, all the best for you two, guys! ❤️
Very dark lyrics fer sure, but a total great 90's grunge song!! I have this on my favorite play list right now. Good choice guys!!
Toady is another word for suckup or sycophant. Great pick, guys. One of my favorite songs from my teen years.
Here are a couple of Toadies slower but subtle songs: The Appeal, Pressed against the sky. "Appeal": is a sad melancholy song about him knowing his father is soon passing away but they have been estranged for years, his "appeal" is they make up before he passes away and harsh words keep them divided.
Pressed against the sky: Is a lazy, hazy summer day where the sky is endlessly deep and his love is there beside him, also looking off into the depths of the sky and him not wanting it to end. Both his arms are pressed embracing the sky.
If you want one that if you understand the words may make you very sad, especially if you have lost someone to self deleting, you can feel the desperation in the song of the young woman and her pain as she struggles to cope, diving into her addiction, spiraling, try "One More".
You guys have to react to Wicked Wisdom and their song Something inside of me.
They are a all African American metal band with a very famous female lead singer
Love, love , love Toadies.More please!
This album rocked from beginning to end and they vanished for 10 years. "Tyler" and "I Come From The Water" "Backslider" and "I Burn" all should have been hits.
Possum kingdom is a lake in Texas. It's about some murders that happened there
Another intensely popular song with a commonly misinterpreted meaning is "Every Breath You Take" by The Police (1983). This song is often believed to be a love/break-up song. I've heard this song at school dances (back in the day), weddings, and on notable music lists which completely missed its meaning. This is probably the most successful hit for the mega-popular band, The Police, whom have a multitude of songs that subvert expectation.
Try out "Tyler" and "Backslider"
I actually worked with Todd and Lisa at Sound Warehouse back in the day. Watched them work up through the small venues in Dallas.Lisa is the bassist. Also, Todd's dad was a preacher; it warped him lol
That seems to happen a lot to Children of ministers
BABYMETAL will release SU-METAL's first Hiroshima triumphal live, "LEGEND-S-Baptism of Religion -" as the third online live show on June 28 on their UA-cam Channel" You should check it out if interested🤟🏽
This and "Away" were songs I WORE OUT in the late 90s. I absolutely love this song. Have him listen to "Away" as that has a similar feel.
I love the Toadies. Possum Kingdom is a real place, a lake that is actually close to my home. They had a concert there several years ago. Tyler is another great song!
Has always reminded me of the movie Cabin at the Lake with the serial killer and his underwater "garden".
Hey guys new subscriber here. Got hooked on you guys from your TooL reactions. This was good love the song. You guys need to react to Stars by Hum, the music video. Very underappreciated band from the '90's. Please guys, think you'll enjoy it. Also some Smashing Pumpkins, Geek U.S.A. and Soma.
The lyrics are actually a made-up story the songwriter came up with, the follow-up to their song I Burn about a dream he had about a crazy cult of people throwing themselves into a fire, thinking it would make them immortal or something. Possum Kingdom is a real lake that is the setting of this imaginary story. He explains it in a documentary you can find here on UA-cam.
Rubberneck is an amazing album, start to finish. I was fortunate to hear it being played in its entirety at a restaurant in the 90s and the whole thing was great, so I went out and bought it, and it's a CD I still own and listen to 25 yrs later.
They come from Texas, and you can bet grunge/metalheads from our state love em!! Saw them in an outdoor concert and they were phenomenal! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
This album is the most underrated band ever! This album is so underrated!
YUSSSSSSSSSSS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS! Memoriessssss
Love this reaction.
So the song title, like others have mentioned, is a lake and park in Texas. Some murders there happened back in the day. And kinda got twisted into an urban legend. The whole album seems to be either urban legends, actual events, and stories about growing up in Texas. 'Tyler', for example, is about events that actually happened in Tyler, Texas. If anyone else has pointed this out, sorry I'm late to the party. Wonderful video. Cheers.
Hollywood, I'm loving that sick BatMan hat. Great job guys thanks for opening my eyes to the meaning of this song
The singer said there is a creepy town in Texas called Possum Kingdom where weird stuff happens and he was trying to capture that vibe. I was told it was about vampires before that.
Awesome song...I still have my copy of this from way back
Also the song Welcome Home by Coheed Cambria. I dont want to ruin it if you two do happen to cover it, also watch the music video for it.
Awesome reaction Guys! I love This song. I still own this Cd..
Yeah we covered this song in the clubs ... fun to play fun to sing . It's fun to take artistic licence when emphasizing meaning into the tone of the song.
TT what do you get when you combine TRENT REZNOR and MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN? PUSCIFER - POTIONS. ✌
This song is in my playlist 😁
There is a manmade lake in Texas called "Possum Lake". There were some real creepy things that occurred there during a period of time. This song is based on this story.
Saw them in Lafayette when they were relatively unknown. It blew my mind!!!
My friends.... ya gotta try their song "Tyler". It's just as dark. Great song !
That was a great call. This song was huge and it was the music that we dug right away. Not until later do you realize what it meant. Kinda like the Police's Every breath you take. Everyone thought it was the beautiful love song when it was about a stalker too.
This whole album kicks butt
Possum Kingdom is the name of a lake in North Texas. I used to go to it all the time.
Flaaassh back wow. 🔥 good one 💜
Just wanted to say, you guys are awesome!!!! ✌
Art encompasses all facets of human life and activity, not just the good
I absolutely love this song I still listen to it awesome song
Bass player is Lisa umberger. She was a jawa in star wars when she was a kid
Another great song from the 90s that deals with upbeat sounds but with dark/deep lyrics is Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind. You guys definitely need to react to that song. Be sure to watch a lyric video on it though so you can catch everything. Great reaction. Love the channel. You two are great. ♥
If you're hangin with alternative-esque stuff, I suggest The song "Hate Me" by the band "Blue October." It too is a popping song with a dark message. But you guys still haven't done one single "Rush" reaction and I know I'm not the only commenter to suggest them. Is there some problem with Canadians for you two?
It's been said, but just in case it's buried somewhere... Lisa Umbarger was their fantastic bassist for this album and tour.
want upbeat song with darker meaning?
Avenged Sevenfold - Little piece of heaven
goes extremely well with their official video
The king song of upbeat songs w/ dark meanings is "Semi-Charmed Life"
That's the bassist, Lisa Umbarger. She's fantastic.
Ya’ll should do a sound track series!
Personal Favs of the 90’s:
Spawn
Natural Born Killers
The Crow
S.F.W.
Lost Highway
I know it might be a bit soon, but since you guys are in love with Tatiana from Jinjer, you guys should really check out the song Outlander. Probably my favorite Jinjer song and she is smoooookin' fine in that video. Might want to hold a pillow in your lap when you guys watch it.
ua-cam.com/video/XtOYjCkHJak/v-deo.html
You need more toadies. Their songs are built around the pov of serial killers, with a catchy pop rock tune. Check "Tyler".
The whole album rocks. Possum Kingdom Lake is located near Fort Worth where they are from. This is where the name of the song comes from. The record label gave them a few choices for names and they chose The Toadies, unsure why and it is meaningless. Possum Kingdom is about a murder. The album is called Rubberneck and is less than an hour long and is outstanding from beginning to end. The lead singer Todd, said they wanted to sound like AC/DC. The bassist is a female, Lisa Umberger
Possum kingdom is a lake in Texas, presumably, where a stalker dumps the body of a woman he kills
What do you guys know about Deftones??? Check em out if you’re not familiar.
Theres a lake in Texas called Possum Kingdom and a bar on the lake called Toadies. Pretty sure thats where they got their name.
The songs inspiration comes from a story in Texas about serial killings near a lake area called possum kingdom
Possum Kingdom is a lake in North West Texas , my family has a cabin /land out on the river close to the lake.
Anything from the Rubberneck album is worth listening to. Yes, they did have a female member. Some history there. Good group, pretty much underrated. Worth the listen!
Female bassist!! This song is incredible and one that always brings me back to early college!!!
Love this song. This isn't the only song from them that is dark all of their songs are. My favorite song from them is Jigsaw Girl
Toadies is a reference to chicks that follow bands and sleep with the members of the band. Possum Kingdom is a lake.
Possum Kingdom is a Texas state park and lake that's just west of DFW.
Their first two albums are prime 90s rock. Any song on them.
Toad and the wet sprocket is a other toad based group 😂
