I love this!!!! This is grandkid friendly as they begin to learn how to sew. I have four grandsons that I am teaching to sew, against Dad’s better judgement. Boys need to learn how to sew as well. Thank you!!!!
YES!!!! It's definitely kid friendly!! It has enough technique without being over whelming, and it's fun to get to use something you made. Sewing is a life skill and in this day and age it's important for everyone to know how to do it.
After watching multiple pillow videos, you are the ONLY one to talk about directional material and the adjustment to make. Other videos show design going sideways, which looks very odd. Luckily, I figured this out on my own before the first pillow I made. Was so happy to see you address this. Thank you for being so detailed and thorough. Oh wow!! Thank you so much Kathy!! Yes, the kind of print matters so much in this, and it's odd how most people don't even address it. My videos are a bit longer than most, but I do try to be completely thorough. I was frustrated with videos when I was learning that left out so many details. I find it's the little things that make the biggest difference in the success of the project, so I decided I would include the full lesson in my videos and blog posts. I appreciate your kind comment.
Made 3 pillow cases using a different tutorial. Never knew directional fabric was supposed to go up and down, not side to side. Also have never done a French hem before. Looking forward to when the Christmas/winter fabric comes out and will be making some using your method.
Glad I could help! I don't understand why the directional prints are never addressed because so many fabrics are directional! I'm about ready to sew myself some fresh new pillowcases as well.
Love the print on your pillowcase! My friends just bought a camper and I would love to gift them a set of these! You have the patience of a saint and love your spirit! Sewing seems to be a dying craft in my area. Cannot find a person willing to give classes other than JoAnnes and they don’t always have the best teachers ..as you know😉
Having taught sewing in Joann, I can tell you the pay is terrible. It can be as bad as $4 an hour depending on how many students you have and what the class is. I did it for a while, but I could not keep doing it because of the pay. Sewing is not huge here either, so don't feel bad. My town is more about going out and entertaining than sewing and crafts. Oh well. That's why we have youtube and I also recommend Craftsy for sewing classes. I enjoy them though I haven't been on it all that much this year. I need to change that for sure. I do hope you'll try this version of pillowcase! I love making them!
That teacher would never hug me for any reason. LOL!!! I was not part of her clique and felt like a total outsider. I would have loved to teach this version of pillowcase when I was teaching there...which was later on of course....but they did not allow us to do our own classes. We could only teach what corporate wanted. I understand her frustration in terms of dealing with Joann corporate, but as a teacher, you should always make all students feel welcomed and a part of the class. Anyway. It's water under the bridge at this point, but I share the story so others know they are not the only ones who have ever felt left out. It's important to brush it off and keep going. I hope you will give this quick sew project a try!
I completely agree!! I first found my interest in it when I took Home Ec in High School. I sewed Christmas presents for everyone for quite a few years. I did give it up for decades when I went to school and had my working life, but I'm really enjoying finding it again.
Hubby and I were wondering how chilly it was getting in Virginia. We come back little over 2 weeks from now. I love those pillow cases and would love to do some for the grandchildren. I agree with you on the directional pattern. I would have to make mine in snuggle fabric but some other type for hubby as he is so hot natured. You did an awesome job on the pillow cases . Love the French seams.
Well, it's getting very cool at night, but the daytime highs are still close to 70 so it's been quite nice. You can make these in quilting cotton as well! I do those for warmer months. Little ones will love these because you can pick from so many different fabrics. It will probably be much cooler by them time you come home, but so far a very warm and comfortable fall.
I so appreciate this!! I was sewing curtains for my granddaughter's room, and she wanted matching pillowcases. This video was super easy to follow!! Not only did I sew hers successfully, her brother wanted pillowcases for his room, too! Luckily I was able to find the fabric available to match the curtains I made 4 years ago for his room! Great tutorial Patty! I also like the snuggle fabrics too! I've always been to shy to take public classes. Plus, I don't like instructors who aren't patient with new students! Other than my private sewing instructor (a member and friend from church), everything I've learned so far has been on UA-cam, DVDs, and a ton of books...new and old books from Goodwill. The struggle with directional prints is real girl!! P.S....I loved the kitty!!

Well, when the world settles down and things are in better order, we will have to have a meet up at Missouri Star for one of her big quilter's getaways! My dream is to go to those. Hi Patty! Will you please tell me the measurements for the directional fabric and the fleese as well? Im still confused about it. Im 72 and it takes me a while for it to click in my brain. I sure would appreciate it. Thank you❤
The project measurement is about 42 x 36. We cut on a fold so it looks like 24 x 36. You need slightly more than a yard if the fabric is directional, so be sure you have at least a yard and an 1/8 to have enough. I recommend cutting a piece of brown paper to construct your own pattern. Cut the paper to 24 x 36 and lay the long edge on the fold of the fabric. Then lay out the fabric in the way you want the print to run and cut using the paper pattern. That way you don't have to make measurements, which can get confusing. And if you use your own paper pattern, you know each pillowcase is pretty close to identical.

I don't know what size that is to be honest! My pillows are fairly large and these pillowcases are oversized but I like them big because they are super easy to get on and off. I think it would be pretty easy for you to measure the pillowcases you have that fit and compare to the size I made here. Please report back your findings so we know the size needed for the larger pillows. I've had a couple of questions on that and couldn't answer it.
Made everyday had this pillowcase. She had the top part ironed then sewed the side and bottom seam. Them turned the ironed part in place and stiched it around. It took 1 yd. Of fabric for the pillowcase.
Dana's version did not include the french seams. I like the french seams in my pillowcases, so I encased all my raw edges. And 1 yard is fine if you don't have directional fabric or if you don't mind a smaller pillowcase. They also shrink quite a lot with repeated washings in flannel, and I like to use them for at least a year. But I'm flattered you would think of Dana when you see my project.
I made this. Great tutorial! I really do suggest using more than one yard even if using non directional print as I think you suggested. The flannel does shrink. Ironing is a must! I love my new pillow case!🤗😆💖

Thanks Amelia! I don't have king sized pillows so I can say exactly, but google gives a measurement of 20x36 which is a finished measurement. You should take your current pillowcase and measure it. Add for seam allowances. Maybe I should do a short video on how to use a pillowcase to figure measurements.

It's so much easier than the burrito style pillowcase! I've made those and they are a pretty cool project. But they look ratty after a few washes unless you stitch the constrast "ribbon" down. And getting everything out of the tube is tricky. This is super straight forward but still gives you that easy French seam! I hope you try it out!

I just made a pillow case from some remnants of fabric I had left over and the lady from my quilters guild gave me a guide of 27 x WOF...well the width of my fabric was about 31 inches. So it wound up being a pretty skinny pillow case...Not sure what would go inside it. :/. nothing I assume. Thanks for making this video! I appreciate it!
I’ve made so many pillow cases over the years, but I really, really like so much better that you use one fabric instead of 2-3. Brilliant! What dimensions did you use after adding the extra inch for your template? Somehow I missed that as I really want to make some like yours. Fun fact. Our church gets together once a year and makes pillow cases for children in hospitals around our area. It’s a fun day with so many machines humming, some people cutting fabric, some ironing and the school children get service hours when they help at that event. I cut the fabric 36 x 21 on the fold. The 21" is on the fold so it's 42 when opened up. I hope that helps! Yeah, the extra fabrics are cute but I honestly prefer these on my pillows!

Great question! It's not necessary, but flannel is slightly stretchy. Zigzag is a stretchy stitch so it can be a good choice with flannels. I love this project and really enjoy making pillowcases for myself and for gifts. I do hope you'll try making them.

Ah yes!! Coastal VA stays pretty warm. We didn't even have snow last year. Which is normal. The mountains are quite a lot colder, but the coastal plain stays pretty warm. Of course, if you are coming from way up north, even the mountains would be significantly warmer for you.
Hi Patty - thanks so much for this tutorial - out of the slew on You Tube I have found yours to be the one I'm looking for and will use it again as I create my cases. I do have a question though. When you showed the paper pattern and cut an inch around it. I am not clear what specific measurements should be used for the pattern. Was it just the formal measure of the pillow ? Because I am not sure if we need to account for pillow fluffiness. :) Please let me know then I'm ready to roll to get these made ! thanks again.
I cut the final pattern to be 42" x 36". I use that for all my pillow cases but you can definitely add a little depending on your pillow size. I have those very fluffy My Pillow pillows and it is a little tight going around them. The best thing to do if you're unsure is to cut one from a cheap muslin fabric and sew it up and try it on the pillows to see how it fits. Garment makers make muslins all the time to test out fit so it could be done here as well. I hope that helps!
I just made my first pillow case tonight, only my second project ever (after napkins). I didn’t have a point turner or a seam gauge and I immediately purchased them after completing my pillow. I ran into some trouble doing the final seam. When I turned the pillow case outright, I had some raw fabric coming through. I think this is because I had too much excess fabric after the first seam… and/or that I did the first seam in too far. I think having the seam gauge would have saved me here. Over all it was a success and I can’t wait to show my 4 year old his bug covered pillow case tomorrow!!
@@mikailajones6201 You're welcome!! Yeah, the issue you describe with the second seam have some fabric peak through is a common issue. It's not allowing a wide enough seam allowance on the last seam. I've done it myself, and it's why I added a little size to my pillowcase. I have still used them anyway and love them just the same!! I'm sure your little one will too!

It was 75 today and 78 tomorrow so it's like spring again. Which is nice because I have tons of leaves and pine straw to rake up, and I rather do it when the weather is nice than blustery and cold. It's dropping off next week so I'm going to enjoy this while I have it. I'm really enjoying my pretty new pillowcases regardless! I hope the little girls enjoy theirs!
With only one seam, is the directional fabric upside down on the flip side? If you cut the material just a little larger and put in 2 seams, then you can use the pillowcase on both sides. Or, am I incorrect?
It just flips around the same with one seam. If you want the openings at opposite sides of the bed then you have to sew your openings on opposite ends of the cut fabric. One with a left side and one with a right. I hope that makes sense! You can definitely cut the fabric into two pieces, but it makes it a little more sewing and lining up seams. Cut some and try them out to see what you like best!

Thank you!! I used the zig zag because the flannel is slightly stretchy and the zig zag is a stretchy stitch to better accommodate the fabric. I hope that helps!! I love making my pillowcases like this and still use this method everything I sew something new to freshen up my bedding.
I agree about directional print 😉 what about king size pillows do you have to enlarge the size of the pillowcases? I love this especially for Christmas 🎄
gosh, I've had several questions about making a king sized version, and I don't honestly know the anser because I don't have pillows that size. I would recommend measuring a pillowcase you use currently and cut a pattern from that adding in the seam allowances. You could always make your first version from ugly fabric to see how it fits. That's what I do when I'm coming up with something new.
Ran across this tonight. Great timing for me. I have flannel fabric ordered already for my 5 grandchildren. I am making…pillowcases! This year, just 1 flannel fabric per pillowcase and not burrito style. Had I watched this before ordering, I might have been brave enough to get directional fabric. Otherwise, I avoid directional. Question…is there a reason you did a zigzag stitch down the side and bottom in making your French seam? Was it because it was flannel? Wonderful tutorial you rebel! I would take your class any day. 🙂
Oh thanks Liz!!! I love this pillowcase, and I need to remake some for myself as I do each year. I used the zig zag because it's a stretchy stitch, and flannel is a bit stretchy. I read that somewhere and switched to using the zig zag, but I have had good success with straight stitches, too. I like this version is SO much better than the burrito version. And I think it wears longer because that contrast strip gets crazy after a couple of washes. You can always make a couple of them for your own bed and try out the directional fabric!! I hope you and the children enjoy them!

Oh my gosh, I did the same thing. I took a class with JoAnn Fabrics for sewing and I got the same treatment. I wanted to get into sewing and I did not know the first thing to begin. So, I took a beginner sewing class and it was not good experience.
Having gone back later and taught a few classes with them, I can understand the stress the instructors are under.....but....don't teach the class if you aren't willing to give the students your best self. Joann pay is horrible, but if you have full classes you can make a little money with them. So I put myself in a student's place when I'm instructing on video or in person and put out the best thing I can for them. I hope you were able to keep going with sewing and not give up over the actions of a bad experience.

Are these measurements for a standard size pillow? I have king size pillows and would love to know how much fabric I would need for one. Thank you in advance for your answer.
Tina, I don't have king sized pillows, so I don't know the measurements. I have the standard sized pillows. You can take the pillowcase off your larger pillows and measure those. Add a couple inches to the measurement going around the pillow to compensate for the French seams and if you want a wider hem add some to the length to compensate for that! You may have to cut differently to have enough fabric in one cut, and that might mean only a non directional print will work. I hope that helps! I'll see if I can find some further info.
I like the zigzag on the flannel pillowcases because it's a stretchier stitch and I find it works better with a slightly stretchy fabric. We annoying people need to stick together. LOL
@@PattymacMakes yes we do! That explains the use of a zigzag stitch perfectly. I haven’t sewn with flannel for several years. The flannel I have sewn was not at all stretchy. I’ll need to sew with it again.
@@kdramsey965 It's subtle for sure! I found the zigzag on long seams works better for me. It's not like a knit type of stretch, but it's not as stable as a quilting cotton.

Gina, I can't answer the question accurately, because I haven't tried sewing for that size of pillow. I would recommend you take a pillowcase you're already using and like, measure it and add your seam allowances etc from that finished object. Maybe make one as a test out of cheap or scrap fabric first to figure out your pattern. Definitely make a test first, because the fabrics now are so expensive. Even Joann is expensive these days and a pillow case of that size will take A LOT of fabric. It may be too long to cut using directional as I show due to the standard fabric only being about 40" wide. You might have to use a wide back if directional is your goal. Or sew a cuff on to extend the length. You could use a contrasting solid with the print from a stand fabric size to make it wide enough to work the way you way. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer but I do hope this helps!

OMG patty!! Just this morning a thing happened. 🙄🙄 I happen to have a beautiful directional mock news print with butterflies and dragonflies in cotton print that i wanted to make a blouse out of. WELL... AFTER all my prep, not enough fabric 😥😥. So! I am refreshing my living room with new covers for my pillows and recliner chair arms. My jaw fell open as you started talking directional prints! OMG that's always the worst when you have something in mind and not enough to do it. Well, this is a pretty and cozy way to use your fabrics. I do make them in regular cottons, too, but I had just cleaned and straightened my flannel stash so it was fun to get these out and use them. I've done a couple of color videos this month. Did you have a specific question for me to address?

Oh yeah. It was interesting. I was definitely NOT part of the club and she let me know it. I was the only one not to leave with an unfinished project and she made me feel stupid about it. So I came home and searched youtube. It was my first experience with sewing tutorials on YT and it really got me going. From there I invested in the Bluprint streaming service and used tons of those classes for sewing, quilting and baking. I had some background in sewing, but it had been so many years I couldn't remember anything. Well, it was a good experience in learning how NOT to teach students and how to accurately explain the details so people can understand.
Patty what size did you cut your directional fabric? I'm making one for my granddaughter with Christmas fabric. I'm making a standard size pillow. I will have to mail it soon so she can use for December on her bed.
Michele, it's cut 36" by 21" on the fold...so the 21" measurement is really 42" when opened up. Use 3/8" seam allowance to sew the pillow together. Hope that helps! It's a fun and fast project!
I recommend cutting your template at 36x22 for best results. It's a little larger than the paper I used in the video and is a good size for most standard size pillows.
I'm sad for you that you were treated badly and yet I'm glad you can understand that I ended up leaving class crying and never returned. I have a Bernina 790 that I still don't know how to do embroidery on because "I wasn't a part of the club". Sew Yeah here in Las Vegas, NV is going to teach me how to use my machine even though I didn't purchase it from them. THEY DON'T HAVE A CLUB MEMBERS ONLY. You are so easy to follow along with and have a very nice voice.

Greetings from New Mexico! Please make a TRAVEL-SIZE PILLOWCASE sewing tutorial. With this criteria: 1 fabric print (directional print), 3 seams, french seams, 13"x18" travelsize pillow form. I'm a visual learner and I always refer back to this video and it is very helpful. Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge.

I cut at 42" x 36 so you would be cutting it a bit close as you do need to square up the cut edge of the fabric, but it could be done if you are careful. I hope that helps!!
@@raggedyanna6-Missy Well you cut on the fold so the pattern is 21 x 36. Cut your pattern to that size and then cut your fabric using the pattern. You should rewatch the middle segment about cutting the fabric so it's more clear. I hope that helps!
lol Patty, I can picture you in a standoff with the sewing "instructor" at JoAnn. Frankly, it sounds like she wasn't knowledgeable enough to adapt her lesson to accommodate your directional fabric. Good for you for leaving. Love your pillowcases!
HA HA!! Yeah, I can be firm when I have to be. I'm always nice, but I am firm on those convictions for sure! I think she just had too many people in one class and I threw her off. I had flannel and a directional print, and I should have had quilting cotton and a non directional print. But they didn't specify any of that in the hand out and I didn't know enough at the time to realize the difference. I still have that pillowcase, and got it out of the winter storage last night in fact! It's on my bed now!

I love this!!!! This is grandkid friendly as they begin to learn how to sew. I have four grandsons that I am teaching to sew, against Dad’s better judgement. Boys need to learn how to sew as well. Thank you!!!!
YES!!!! It's definitely kid friendly!! It has enough technique without being over whelming, and it's fun to get to use something you made. Sewing is a life skill and in this day and age it's important for everyone to know how to do it.
After watching multiple pillow videos, you are the ONLY one to talk about directional material and the adjustment to make. Other videos show design going sideways, which looks very odd. Made 3 pillow cases using a different tutorial. Never knew directional fabric was supposed to go up and down, not side to side. Also have never done a French hem before. Looking forward to when the Christmas/winter fabric comes out and will be making some using your method.

Having taught sewing in Joann, I can tell you the pay is terrible. It can be as bad as $4 an hour depending on how many students you have and what the class is. I did it for a while, but I could not keep doing it because of the pay. Sewing is not huge here either, so don't feel bad. My town is more about going out and entertaining than sewing and crafts. Oh well. That's why we have youtube and I also recommend Craftsy for sewing classes. I enjoy them though I haven't been on it all that much this year. I need to change that for sure. I do hope you'll try this version of pillowcase! I love making them!

That teacher would never hug me for any reason. LOL!!! I was not part of her clique and felt like a total outsider. I would have loved to teach this version of pillowcase when I was teaching there...which was later on of course....but they did not allow us to do our own classes. We could only teach what corporate wanted. I understand her frustration in terms of dealing with Joann corporate, but as a teacher, you should always make all students feel welcomed and a part of the class. Anyway. It's water under the bridge at this point, but I share the story so others know they are not the only ones who have ever felt left out. It's important to brush it off and keep going. I hope you will give this quick sew project a try!

I completely agree!! I first found my interest in it when I took Home Ec in High School. I sewed Christmas presents for everyone for quite a few years. I did give it up for decades when I went to school and had my working life, but I'm really enjoying finding it again.
Hubby and I were wondering how chilly it was getting in Virginia. We come back little over 2 weeks from now. I love those pillow cases and would love to do some for the grandchildren. I agree with you on the directional pattern. I would have to make mine in snuggle fabric but some other type for hubby as he is so hot natured. You did an awesome job on the pillow cases . Love the French seams.
Well, it's getting very cool at night, but the daytime highs are still close to 70 so it's been quite nice. You can make these in quilting cotton as well! I do those for warmer months. Little ones will love these because you can pick from so many different fabrics. It will probably be much cooler by them time you come home, but so far a very warm and comfortable fall.

Great tutorial Patty! I also like the snuggle fabrics too! I've always been to shy to take public classes. Plus, I don't like instructors who aren't patient with new students! Other than my private sewing instructor (a member and friend from church), everything I've learned so far has been on UA-cam, DVDs, and a ton of books...new and old books from Goodwill. Hi Patty! Will you please tell me the measurements for the directional fabric and the fleese as well? Im still confused about it. Im 72 and it takes me a while for it to click in my brain. I sure would appreciate it. Thank you❤
The project measurement is about 42 x 36. We cut on a fold so it looks like 24 x 36. You need slightly more than a yard if the fabric is directional, so be sure you have at least a yard and an 1/8 to have enough. I recommend cutting a piece of brown paper to construct your own pattern. Cut the paper to 24 x 36 and lay the long edge on the fold of the fabric.
Then lay out the fabric in the way you want the print to run and cut using the paper pattern. That way you don't have to make measurements, which can get confusing. And if you use your own paper pattern, you know each pillowcase is pretty close to identical.

I don't know what size that is to be honest! My pillows are fairly large and these pillowcases are oversized but I like them big because they are super easy to get on and off. I think it would be pretty easy for you to measure the pillowcases you have that fit and compare to the size I made here. Please report back your findings so we know the size needed for the larger pillows. I've had a couple of questions on that and couldn't answer it.

Thank you!! This is my go to pillowcase pattern still to this day! I have fabric I just got to use for making a fresh set.
Made everyday had this pillowcase. She had the top part ironed then sewed the side and bottom seam. Them turned the ironed part in place and stiched it around. It took 1 yd. Of fabric for the pillowcase.
Dana's version did not include the french seams. I like the french seams in my pillowcases, so I encased all my raw edges. And 1 yard is fine if you don't have directional fabric or if you don't mind a smaller pillowcase. They also shrink quite a lot with repeated washings in flannel, and I like to use them for at least a year. But I'm flattered you would think of Dana when you see my project.

Thanks Amelia! I don't have king sized pillows so I can say exactly, but google gives a measurement of 20x36 which is a finished measurement. You should take your current pillowcase and measure it. Add for seam allowances. Maybe I should do a short video on how to use a pillowcase to figure measurements.

It's so much easier than the burrito style pillowcase! I've made those and they are a pretty cool project. But they look ratty after a few washes unless you stitch the constrast "ribbon" down. And getting everything out of the tube is tricky. This is super straight forward but still gives you that easy French seam! I hope you try it out!

I just made a pillow case from some remnants of fabric I had left over and the lady from my quilters guild gave me a guide of 27 x WOF...well the width of my fabric was about 31 inches. So it wound up being a pretty skinny pillow case...Not sure what would go inside it. :/. nothing I assume. Thanks for making this video! I appreciate it!

I’ve made so many pillow cases over the years, but I really, really like so much better that you use one fabric instead of 2-3. Brilliant! What dimensions did you use after adding the extra inch for your template? Somehow I missed that as I really want to make some like yours. Fun fact. Our church gets together once a year and makes pillow cases for children in hospitals around our area. It’s a fun day with so many machines humming, some people cutting fabric, some ironing and the school children get service hours when they help at that event. I thought I had put the cutting instructions in the description. So sorry about that! I guess I had planned to link up to a blog post but I haven't been able to finish it yet. I cut the fabric 36 x 21 on the fold. The 21" is on the fold so it's 42 when opened up. I hope that helps! Yeah, the extra fabrics are cute but I honestly prefer these on my pillows!

Great question! It's not necessary, but flannel is slightly stretchy. Zigzag is a stretchy stitch so it can be a good choice with flannels. I love this project and really enjoy making pillowcases for myself and for gifts. I do hope you'll try making them.

Ah yes!! Coastal VA stays pretty warm. We didn't even have snow last year. Which is normal. The mountains are quite a lot colder, but the coastal plain stays pretty warm. Of course, if you are coming from way up north, even the mountains would be significantly warmer for you.
We're in the 80°s here in Arizona. But nights are starting to get cooler.
You can make the same version in a cotton if that works better for you! I have them in both, but I love the baby flannels most.

Hi Patty - thanks so much for this tutorial - out of the slew on You Tube I have found yours to be the one I'm looking for and will use it again as I create my cases. I do have a question though. When you showed the paper pattern and cut an inch around it. I am not clear what specific measurements should be used for the pattern. Was it just the formal measure of the pillow ? Because I am not sure if we need to account for pillow fluffiness. :) Please let me know then I'm ready to roll to get these made ! thanks again.
I cut the final pattern to be 42" x 36". I use that for all my pillow cases but you can definitely add a little depending on your pillow size. I have those very fluffy My Pillow pillows and it is a little tight going around them. The best thing to do if you're unsure is to cut one from a cheap muslin fabric and sew it up and try it on the pillows to see how it fits. Garment makers make muslins all the time to test out fit so it could be done here as well. I hope that helps!

I just made my first pillow case tonight, only my second project ever (after napkins). I didn’t have a point turner or a seam gauge and I immediately purchased them after completing my pillow. I ran into some trouble doing the final seam. When I turned the pillow case outright, I had some raw fabric coming through. I think this is because I had too much excess fabric after the first seam… and/or that I did the first seam in too far. I think having the seam gauge would have saved me here. Over all it was a success and I can’t wait to show my 4 year old his bug covered pillow case tomorrow!!

@@mikailajones6201 You're welcome!! Yeah, the issue you describe with the second seam have some fabric peak through is a common issue. It's not allowing a wide enough seam allowance on the last seam. I've done it myself, and it's why I added a little size to my pillowcase. I have still used them anyway and love them just the same!! I'm sure your little one will too!

It was 75 today and 78 tomorrow so it's like spring again. Which is nice because I have tons of leaves and pine straw to rake up, and I rather do it when the weather is nice than blustery and cold. With only one seam, is the directional fabric upside down on the flip side? If you cut the material just a little larger and put in 2 seams, then you can use the pillowcase on both sides. Or, am I incorrect?
It just flips around the same with one seam. If you want the openings at opposite sides of the bed then you have to sew your openings on opposite ends of the cut fabric. One with a left side and one with a right. I hope that makes sense! You can definitely cut the fabric into two pieces, but it makes it a little more sewing and lining up seams. Cut some and try them out to see what you like best!
Love the way you made your pillowcases all in one piece . But why do you use a zigzag stitch instead of a straight stitch. Just curious.. and like the way you put your fabric .thank you for your video.
Thank you!! I used the zig zag because the flannel is slightly stretchy and the zig zag is a stretchy stitch to better accommodate the fabric. I hope that helps!! I love making my pillowcases like this and still use this method everything I sew something new to freshen up my bedding.
I agree about directional print 😉 what about king size pillows do you have to enlarge the size of the pillowcases? I love this especially for Christmas 🎄
gosh, I've had several questions about making a king sized version, and I don't honestly know the anser because I don't have pillows that size. I would recommend measuring a pillowcase you use currently and cut a pattern from that adding in the seam allowances. You could always make your first version from ugly fabric to see how it fits. Ran across this tonight. Great timing for me. I have flannel fabric ordered already for my 5 grandchildren. I am making…pillowcases! This year, just 1 flannel fabric per pillowcase and not burrito style. Had I watched this before ordering, I might have been brave enough to get directional fabric. Otherwise, I avoid directional. Question…is there a reason you did a zigzag stitch down the side and bottom in making your French seam? Was it because it was flannel? Wonderful tutorial you rebel! I would take your class any day. 🙂
Oh thanks Liz!!! I love this pillowcase, and I need to remake some for myself as I do each year. I used the zig zag because it's a stretchy stitch, and flannel is a bit stretchy. I read that somewhere and switched to using the zig zag, but I have had good success with straight stitches, too. I like this version is SO much better than the burrito version. And I think it wears longer because that contrast strip gets crazy after a couple of washes. You can always make a couple of them for your own bed and try out the directional fabric!! I hope you and the children enjoy them!
@@PattymacMakes Am also making one of the flannel pillowcases with a zipper per request from one SIL. He camps out a lot with a jeeping group and wants a flannel zip pillowcase. Think that will be a little different technique. Pondering…

Oh my gosh, I did the same thing. I took a class with JoAnn Fabrics for sewing and I got the same treatment. I wanted to get into sewing and I did not know the first thing to begin. So, I took a beginner sewing class and it was not good experience.
Having gone back later and taught a few classes with them, I can understand the stress the instructors are under.....but....don't teach the class if you aren't willing to give the students your best self. Joann pay is horrible, but if you have full classes you can make a little money with them. So I put myself in a student's place when I'm instructing on video or in person and put out the best thing I can for them. I hope you were able to keep going with sewing and not give up over the actions of a bad experience.

If it was not for your UA-cam channel and others I might have never tried again. Are these measurements for a standard size pillow? I have king size pillows and would love to know how much fabric I would need for one. Thank you in advance for your answer.
Tina, I don't have king sized pillows, so I don't know the measurements. I have the standard sized pillows. You can take the pillowcase off your larger pillows and measure those. Add a couple inches to the measurement going around the pillow to compensate for the French seams and if you want a wider hem add some to the length to compensate for that! You may have to cut differently to have enough fabric in one cut, and that might mean only a non directional print will work. I hope that helps! I'll see if I can find some further info.
So I’m not the only one to annoy a “teacher”! Your version is a good one. I’m curious as to why you chose to use a zigzag stitch for the “final” seam?
I like the zigzag on the flannel pillowcases because it's a stretchier stitch and I find it works better with a slightly stretchy fabric. We annoying people need to stick together. LOL

That explains the use of a zigzag stitch perfectly. I haven’t sewn with flannel for several years. The flannel I have sewn was not at all stretchy. I’ll need to sew with it again.
@@kdramsey965 It's subtle for sure! I found the zigzag on long seams works better for me. It's not like a knit type of stretch, but it's not as stable as a quilting cotton.

You're welcome!! I use the zig zag on flannel because it's a slightly stretch fabric and the zig zag is a stretchy stitch. You can use straight as well, but I find for the long seams the zig zag works really well.

It's designed for a standard pillow. Just your regular old pillow! But you can measure yours if you want to be sure it will fit. I hope that helps!
If I have king size pillows do I cut out the fabric to the pillow measurements plus an inch for seem allowance on a non direction fabric?
Gina, I can't answer the question accurately, because I haven't tried sewing for that size of pillow. I would recommend you take a pillowcase you're already using and like, measure it and add your seam allowances etc from that finished object. Maybe make one as a test out of cheap or scrap fabric first to figure out your pattern. Definitely make a test first, because the fabrics now are so expensive. Even Joann is expensive these days and a pillow case of that size will take A LOT of fabric. It may be too long to cut using directional as I show due to the standard fabric only being about 40" wide. You might have to use a wide back if directional is your goal. Or sew a cuff on to extend the length. You could use a contrasting solid with the print from a stand fabric size to make it wide enough to work the way you way. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer but I do hope this helps!

I've been SUPER happy with that iron! I need to do a review on it, because I've been so happy with it. I use the same water I use for my own drinking water.

OMG that's always the worst when you have something in mind and not enough to do it. Well, this is a pretty and cozy way to use your fabrics. I do make them in regular cottons, too, but I had just cleaned and straightened my flannel stash so it was fun to get these out and use them.

I took a class with someone like that also! Ugh she hated my fabric. I was thinking what does she care!
Oh yeah. It was interesting. I was definitely NOT part of the club and she let me know it. I was the only one not to leave with an unfinished project and she made me feel stupid about it. So I came home and searched youtube. It was my first experience with sewing tutorials on YT and it really got me going. From there I invested in the Bluprint streaming service and used tons of those classes for sewing, quilting and baking. I had some background in sewing, but it had been so many years I couldn't remember anything. Well, it was a good experience in learning how NOT to teach students and how to accurately explain the details so people can understand.
Patty what size did you cut your directional fabric? I'm making one for my granddaughter with Christmas fabric. I'm making a standard size pillow. I will have to mail it soon so she can use for December on her bed.
Michele, it's cut 36" by 21" on the fold...so the 21" measurement is really 42" when opened up. Use 3/8" seam allowance to sew the pillow together. Hope that helps! It's a fun and fast project!

I recommend cutting your template at 36x22 for best results. It's a little larger than the paper I used in the video and is a good size for most standard size pillows.
I'm sad for you that you were treated badly and yet I'm glad you can understand that I ended up leaving class crying and never returned. I have a Bernina 790 that I still don't know how to do embroidery on because "I wasn't a part of the club". Sew Yeah here in Las Vegas, NV is going to teach me how to use my machine even though I didn't purchase it from them. THEY DON'T HAVE A CLUB MEMBERS ONLY. You are so easy to follow along with and have a very nice voice.

Greetings from New Mexico! Please make a TRAVEL-SIZE PILLOWCASE sewing tutorial. With this criteria: 1 fabric print (directional print), 3 seams, french seams, 13"x18" travelsize pillow form. I'm a visual learner and I always refer back to this video and it is very helpful. Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge.

I cut at 42" x 36 so you would be cutting it a bit close as you do need to square up the cut edge of the fabric, but it could be done if you are careful. I hope that helps!!

@@raggedyanna6-Missy Well you cut on the fold so the pattern is 21 x 36. Cut your pattern to that size and then cut your fabric using the pattern. You should rewatch the middle segment about cutting the fabric so it's more clear. I hope that helps!

HA HA!! Yeah, I can be firm when I have to be. I'm always nice, but I am firm on those convictions for sure! I think she just had too many people in one class and I threw her off. I had flannel and a directional print, and I should have had quilting cotton and a non directional print. But they didn't specify any of that in the hand out and I didn't know enough at the time to realize the difference. I still have that pillowcase, and got it out of the winter storage last night in fact! It's on my bed now!
