A little idea I have about the sage leaf is that he's secretly been listening to everything that's been going on (hence him knowing Oatchi's name.) Also, I fully agree with the idea that he landed on pnf-404 many years before Olimar crashed here.
I'm really not surprised you took that break 🥲 the trials killed a part of me when I did them.
I really do love how Nintendo is starting to set a bit of a precedent of Louie filling the role of the antagonist, regardless of whether he actually has bad intentions.
OOOH YES QUESTION OF THE DAY! I do have a theory about the Sage Leaf, no spoilers involved!
It’s very interesting to me that while Moss looks like a very similar space-dog species to Oatchi, Olimar said in his Piklopedia entry on Moss that she was born leafified. This is very interesting, since the Shepherd logs indicate that the rescue-pup line was selectively bred on Giya, making convergent evolution unlikely.
So, my actual theory-Moss’s parents belonged to the Sage Leaf and they crashed with him on PNF 404. We know that the Sage Leaf got leafified (obviously), so he had to have died/passed out and been brought to an onion by the Pikmin. His dogs saw this process bring him back to life, so they began to take castaways to the Onion and taught their puppies the same practice. See how Moss is leading the Pikmin to carry Olimar in the ending of Shipwreck Tale? She knows what it does. Moss then showed this to Leafmar, which led to him realizing that he could prolong the lives of the castaways by leafifying them as well!
tldr: Sage Leaf brought modern Space Dogs (Moss’s parents) to PNF-404 when he crashed, and they saw him get leafified and brought back to life. From that, the space dogs learned to leafify every castaway, eventually leading to Moss saving Olimar when his life support ran out in Shipwreck Tale
You've done *really* well in the Sage Leaf Trials so far. The number of attempts it's taken you per floor is relatively low compared to most people. That said, taking a break to do a normal day when you need it is great to do as well. The Sage Leaf Trials can definitely be more taxing than most of the other challenges. Sure, it adds to your day count to leave it early, but you're not doing an optimized run of the game, you're doing a first time blind playthrough. Just like in Pikmin 2, you're not going to get penalized for your day count.
Your dislike of timers increases my belief that you'll most likely enjoy Tinykin when you play it eventually. You've already got a couple of games going with Pikmins 3 & 4, so probably not soon though.
You weren't expecting Louie... He doesn't even need to say anything to get a big reaction. His presence alone is all it takes, like a weather report that says there are tornadoes coming in.
..the challenges are in my opinion the hardest test of dandori in the game ..the trick in most of this is developing a path and managing the task the pikmin and ochi are doing . like leaving some working on something .. sending ochi or the your hocotate to do something get to a part of the map while you are doings something else. ..
also dong feel bad if you end up looking up how someone else beat the challenge .. some times the challenge do require a bit of harder thinking ... and it fair to skip that to have a less stressful experience . i remember doing that for some of them.

Sage leaf theory: Did he make the trials or find them?… hmmm other than that I think he is the caretaker of the purple and white onions maybe because they were so rare he took care of them until the Pikmin populations would go up when that happened he sensed it and opened the cave awaiting for the main character to arrive…
Heads-up! It’s great you’re prioritize more with the story but also prioritizing getting the rewards from Sage Leaf first because mostly completing the game first will make the rewards kinda useless

I suggest you try buying all the upgrades, i won’t spoil what happens when you do, but i’ll tell you that it can you that time you spend plugging pikmin out the ground can be cut into a mere second 👍

It's not a perfect system but the switch does have a zoom function if you go to setting then system and scroll near the bottom you can find a setting that will let you zoom by double tapping the home button
