I recently repotted an aloe Vera and it’s too big to fit on my window sill. This just reminded me to go put him outside for some sun since I had moved him so far from the normal light he gets. Also, Ive noticed that when I keep the nursery pot in another container, it keeps my plant moist and happy longer. Learned that the hard way when I repotted something and didn’t put the new pot back in the big mug - it dried up SO much faster! Thanks for the share!!

I have many plants that I water from the bottom all the time. It saves me from guessing how much to pour in. The pots that I buy are made for this and have a wick that goes up into the dirt. I love the mulch idea, though, never thought of that! Great video I am glad I found your channel!

I am indoor house planting in NYC, US. We’re seeing temperatures as low as 23F outside. Here’s the thing: my apartment complex is so afraid of getting sued that they leave the heat on through the entire season! But that’s not the bad part…
I have Meyer lemon seedlings growing and (Quercus alba) white oak tree acorns germinating in the same indoor plant-tent facing Northeast-East; so sunrise is a big thing for my Meyers.
When I infrared-check the temperature, The area is usually cooler than the Meyer leaf. I have full spectrum grow lights, but the Meyers seem to be stretching to them, so I quarter turn them every week. When I set my humidifier to 60%, I only get maybe the high 40%. And when I finally get it to at least the high 50%, the temp is around 85F and the clear plastic is sweating everywhere! The overall temperature (leaf & ambiance) can fluctuate between low 70F to mid 80F.
    Any suggestions? Please help?

You are so right on letting them enjoy the great outdoors. My pelargonium suffered etiolation even though I kept it in a bright sunny window indoors (I suspect windows filter some light wavelength). Once I moved it outside in direct morning sunlight and fresh breeze it developed a reddish blush on the stem and internodes and leaves became vibrant green. Gardening is continuous learning by experience. :-D

Thank you for the awesome quick video! Two questions: 1) are houseplants okay going outside without a hardening off period that you usually do with seedlings? 2) Any tips on de-bugging plants that have been outside for the summer when you take them back inside?

    • @abyssal_phoenix
      @abyssal_phoenix 4 роки тому

Well, if the weather is mostly the same outside as inside or just a bit colder or warmer: you can just put it outside, it can handle it, but maybe keep it inside during night if the temps drop a lot. (But build it up, so keep it outside like 10 minutes/30 minutes more everyday)
Well, it is a lot about which bugs, of you want to do organic. Use coffeegrounds or coffee. For example ants don’t like it.

Adansonii that shipped awful and I am rehabbing it as the stems feel strong though the leaves are broken. I feel more people should know that not all plants come as pristine as one would think since not all plants travel well.

Good tips. I ordered a Maranta from Planterina simply because I haven't been able to find one locally ever since mine passed away while I was hospitalized from the end of September 2018 to the first of March 2019. Actually, all my plants died. Some I have not been able to replace; but, my collection is growing. Planterina offers free shipping; but, I imagine it's not really free since the price of the plants seem a bit high; but, I have only compared her prices with a couple other sites and I had to figure that if I used another source to save money on the plant; but, make up for that saving with shipping charges, then I haven't saved anything really. With my Prayer Plant, I got a free aloe vera in an extra small pot. It was definitely too big for the pot, so I potted the aloe vera into a clay pot and it seems to be doing okay. The Prayer Plant is still in the nursery pot that it arrived in.
I am still figuring out a way to display the plants. I need to do some rearranging on the plant table. Eventually, I will have them arranged to my liking. I love plants and it's nice to have them back in my life; but, here where I live, I'm not sure I would keep any of them out doors. It gets hot, dry, windy, or cold.

What should be used for good indoor houseplant mulch? Also do you ever use milk or baking soda when you water?
Note: whenever I go on an extended trip I put all my houseplants in the bathtub. I close the shower curtain and the drain and give them a good but not too much shower/soak. It’s always worked well but I did not know that by doing so I was slowing down what light does to them. Good lesson

Not related to this, but I'm working on my garden. I expect to really get it going properly next year (😭😭😭). Have you ever made a trellis? Or stairs for garden (not that it looks like you need it)? I figured I would try to utilize all the ridiculous amount of bamboo, instead of waste it, to make trellises. My best garden space is unfortunately up a half wall, and not easily accessible (best area and sun). Thank you for any advice. Hi Kevin. I love your channel! Your thorough explanations are great. Your calethea lancifolia is beautiful. I need help with mine, which I've had for about a year. I would really appreciate any advice you have for me. Here's what's going on: A lot of the leaves lost their dark color on the underside and got crunchy/died. I moved it into the shade and leaves are starting to grow again. I watered it and the newly unfurled leaf already has a rotting stem. Too much water, so I took the plant out of its pot to let the soil dry out. I'm trying to keep it pretty shady so I don't fry the leaves again. Am I on track?

3 Simple Houseplant Care Tips to Keep Your Plants Healthy
    1. Put your house plants outside by season for sunlight. we human created the term 'indoor plant'
    2. During vacation, top off saucer, use mulch, use water bulb, move plants away from windows to slow down their metabolism*
    3. Watering from the bottom

I have a question, since quarantine I got really into keeping houseplants, and I have 11 in my room now. A short time ago, I noticed they all have thrips, that ruin my leaves. I don't really know what to do about them because I'm a beginner. They all are standing kinda close together because my room is a little dark and they have to share the light source. (I think that one infected the other and so on. Can you give me any advice on defeating them. Also I have an infected Maranta (same kind as yours in the video) that had besides thrisps some Mealybugs.

I'm learning to just leave them alone....10-15 days in between watering. My zz plant isn't thriving..I ignore it but its not putting out any new growth 😕 but its not my favorite plant either.

How do you get rid of white mildew? I have tried everything. My last try is listerine with water. Its in my fruit tree plants and my Joya or wax plant

I'm think I'm going to put some kind of good-looking plant stickers on my houseplants to remind me how to care for each of them. Maybe a sticker... with your face 😉 lol . (Sometimes we ladies have lines as bad as men) 😂

I’m not putting anything outside until night temps stabilize over 60, an then only certain tropical, Birds of Paradise, Bougainvilleas, an Hibiscus. Anything I worry about thrips getting on is staying in. 😃

I have a question: whenever I did put my houseplants outside, quiet a few came back in with "pests" attached. Little flies, lice etc. What am I doing wrong? Never really caught anything while being inside. So I am actually a bit hesitant to let them enjoy the outside.

Aloha Natalie, you probably did nothing wrong. Outside is where the bugs live. At least you saw the pests, which will give you an opportunity to hose off your infected plants, keep them separated from your "healthy" ones for awhile until you're sure all pests are gone (maybe with some Neem oil help).

A bit of dish soap and water mixed in a spritzer, and give the plant and soil a good spritze!

How would you deal with cuttings in the mail? Specifically pothos and scindapsus because that's what's coming Thursday! 😁
