I just want to point out for those living in the southern hemisphere, -north and south windows are the opposite. So a north facing window will give bright, direct light and a south facing window will have no direct light.
I have been growing house plants for over 20 years, and its so great to hear such a comprehensive and matter of fact care guide from the younger generations. You are on point, and did such an amazing job esp with myths, and issues some seem to glaze over. Great job
you all probably dont give a damn but does anybody know a method to get back into an Instagram account?? I was dumb lost my password. I would love any help you can offer me
@David Marley i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Light is always a seasonal challenge as the sun moves. I moved from an apartment that had only north-facing windows (which was a challenge) to an apartment that had all east-facing windows. Much better, but I still need to pay attention to the moving sun. Thanks so much for sharing!
Great video as always, I never even thought of the thinner leaves and stems needing less 💧 This is a great go to video for anyone from beginner to pro to learn and remember the basics☺️🌱
Im absolutely horrible at plants despite trying for a few years but my biggest accomplishment to this point is my zamia growing like crazy in my inside, south-west, super dark room. Bro is over 5 years old and literally over a meter long (times like 20 in the same pot)
I learned SOO MUCH thank you! I've been STRUGGLING so much. I've basically been the mom off the fairly odd parents when she says "EVERYTHING I TOUCH DIES" when dealing with my poor plant babies. Thank you for helping me save my plant babies lives!
Love this! I think it is equally important to note that even though you want your terracotta pot to be porous, you want your saucer to be waxed so it doesn't damage your tables! Love this video!
Great tips here! I always enjoy seeing each person's unique take on plant care. I'm definitely not a beginner, but I don't think I'll ever run out of things to learn. 😊
I love this video! I found your channel a couple days ago and you're so relatable! I'm about 8 months into my houseplant mom journey and this information was so helpful, not repetitive at all! Keep the videos coming!
Thank you so much for this! I took notes the entire time I watched. There's so much info out there it's overwhelming. I appreciate your direct and pro health approach to plants. I'm defiantly going to download the little booklet!
I clicked on this just to be supportive of your channel because I wouldn't consider myself to be a beginner but I actually learned several things I hadn't thought of so thank you!
Very kind of you to say! I was actually a teacher last school year and still have my certification! Who knows where life will take me, maybe I'll end up back in the classroom again someday ❤️
My east window has a balcony overhead, and gets very little light. This has been a sad journey conducted in literal middle America. Waiting to see if you cover solutions. I love your dog and greenery.
This video is Sooo helpful for houseplant dummies like myself, I was giving a houseplant as a gift it with No instructions and it wasn’t looking too good after a couple weeks and from watching your video I have moved it from my deck ( I thought a lot of sunlight would be good for it) but after watching your video I have learnt it’s leaf’s feel thick and similar to a succulent and it’s darker color so I think 🤔 the leaves definitely got a sunburn ( I didn’t even know that’s a thing for houseplants) I’m still trying to identify the plant, but this is a great start and so very helpful! Thank you 🙏 I really don’t want to be a houseplant murderer 😂, I subscribed and even though I got a surprise baby (my mystery plant) I want to be a good caregiver. 😊❤🎉
Thank you Becca, great video full of so much great and useful information. I loved listening to all of your tips and plant care, I think before you buy a plant make sure you have the right spot for it before you purchase it, so many times we buy a plant because it's just so cute and we just want it. I know that I am guilty of doing that, and then you get it home and almost freak out because you're not sure how to take care of it.I am to the point now where a certain amount of the plants I want are my wish list plants, and if I purchase a Maranta I know that I have the right conditions to grow them. Same with Hoyas. Sometimes I think it's fun to figure out what is going to make a plant happy that we brought home. If you pay attention to your plants they will tell you when they need water, if they are getting too much light or not enough. I know when I first started collecting plants I had the tendency to over water. Now I wait and let the plant tell me when it needs water. I also love terra cotta pots, and will sometimes paint them or draw on them to make them a totally custom designed pot. Thank you again, I would love to see more videos like this one.
Yes I have definitely bought a plant before and had no idea where to put it! That makes the whole process much more stressful lol. I agree, plants are definitely vocal about their needs! So important to be intuitive with them :) Thanks for watching!!
I didn't even get to the 5-minute mark, and I had to hit the thumbs up button. You provided good info for probably some more experienced plant moms and dads as well. Really well done. You did forget one reason for a drainage hole-avoiding the scolding finger of Gretchen.
Thanks!!!! What an amazing video. Thanks for your hard work. And the booklet is amazing. Even though I've had plants for about 10 years, I love learning new things or remembering basics again.
But the opposite windows in the southern hemisphere! Great info! I like the tips for getting to know your plants. Still trying to figure out my anthurium (prob needs terra cotta), coleus and waffle plant. For my medium low light, I have had success with peace lily, syngonium, vining philos, ags, sans, zz - all highly recommended. I agree, you have to choose the plants not just based on the pretty. I now know I have to enjoy rex begonias in the shop. I can take cane begonias home. I actually haven't got into pots at all. Most of them are still in their black plastic ones. I do like terra cotta though and I am definitely pro-saucer. The most important tip I got from this is you can't kill a plant from one sitting of watering. Sometimes I am afraid to drench.
Yes exactly! Anthuriums are so tricky! I'm just getting into them -- im a bit scared, I'll be honest lol. I think it's a good point that we can enjoy plants in the shop and not have to bring them home! haha never thought of it that way but it's soo true. It's totally a myth that plants don't like a drench! I almost didn't add that but I'm super happy I did! Thanks for watching
Damn, I learned soooooo much. Buying a plant has always been a 'bringing it to its own funeral' situation. I saw a small plant on an endcap at Lowe's and something about it made me want to bring it home. So thanks for teaching me how to take care of it. :D Also, thanks for the booklet!
Great vid! My girlfriend and I have a newfound love of plants because we needed a hobby during quarantine. This video was VERY informative for new plantkeepers!
hii i was wondering where you got that shelf in the background with your plants on them? i've been trying to find something similar :) awesome video btw, i just started my journey as a new plant mama, so i'm trying to prepare my apartment a little better with the influx of new plant babies i'm bound to end up with soon haha
I do like to watch 101 videos. One can always pick up a thing or two :-) Calatheas are my favorite plants, and I have a few and so far they are thriving in terracotta. But I do live in Scandinavia, and the humidity in my house and outside is quite high. So that could be it.
New to your channel! and I am a new plant mom.. I live in the northern hemisphere (HTX) I am confused as to when you say east window? How do I Know what my windows are
You can use the compass on your phone and point the top of your phone out of the window and you’ll be able to see if it points to north, east, south, or west :)
Can we talk about good insects and bad ones? There are currently creepy centipede like boys (smol thank god) just living their bessstt life in the soil of my big leaf philodendron , it’s confusing lol
Oh yeah! So Bugs like that aren't harmful for the plant, or so I've heard. I've never personally had that happen to me, but you can just remove them from the soil. You can also sterilize your soil before you use it by baking it in the oven. This will kill any organisms in the soil before you even use it!
You know I would have to tell you that even though you think green thumbs don't exist in my experience they actually do! My grandmother has had plants ever since I can remember and if she's killed 10 plants in my 24 years of living that'd be it really and she never actually researched a lot about plants she really just let's them be mostly I feel like even with how careful I try to be and research I still am not near as good.
My apartment has a north facing balcony and my plants are doing... oh well, relatively fine THOUGH I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO HAVE EAST / WEST FACING WINDOWS/ BALCONY. But then again that's probably because I'm from Malaysia and we sit in the middle of the equator * awkward laughsss then cries *
I just want to point out for those living in the southern hemisphere, -north and south windows are the opposite. So a north facing window will give bright, direct light and a south facing window will have no direct light.
Yep very important distinction!!
Shes not a human shes doesnt breathe talks too fast pretty narcissistic and giggles in inappropriate times.

This is awesome to hear! Thank you so very much! :)
Personally I just like re-watching these types of videos I like to hear how people keep their plans , what window they keep, ect great video
That’s very smart!! Lots of different perspectives and experiences ❤️
you all probably dont give a damn but does anybody know a method to get back into an Instagram account??

@Avery Moses Instablaster ;)
@David Marley i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out atm.

@David Marley it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my ass!
Light is always a seasonal challenge as the sun moves. I moved from an apartment that had only north-facing windows (which was a challenge) to an apartment that had all east-facing windows. Much better, but I still need to pay attention to the moving sun. Thanks so much for sharing!
That is very true! The sun is definitely more intense in the summer rather than the winter. Thanks for watching!
Great video as always, I never even thought of the thinner leaves and stems needing less 💧
This is a great go to video for anyone from beginner to pro to learn and remember the basics☺️🌱
Yes! definitely a really great tip! ❤️
One of the best 101 videos I’ve ever watched. 💚
My heart is singing! Thank you so much 💕
The most helpful Plant 101 on youtube with authentic personality that doesnt sound like a guru.
👏🏼😄 thank you!
Your video is amazing , thank you so much for all those tips.
i feel much more confident as new plant parent now.
Happy growing.

That booklet is such a cute idea. Thinking about giving them to friends if I gift them plants.
Thank you! Definitely pass them along to friends! That would be awesome :)
Thank you for that encouraging chapter at the end. I have definitely killed the last several plants and was feeling iffy about trying again
I love this video! I found your channel a couple days ago and you're so relatable! I'm about 8 months into my houseplant mom journey and this information was so helpful, not repetitive at all! Keep the videos coming!

Yes! It's a common one. Plants love a good soak :)

I have my cacti in a east window, I have had them in a south before but find some not all tend to burn but succs are really happy in a south.
Ooooh that’s true they def can burn!!
hey, I notice you didn't say anything about west-facing windows? I was really hoping you would mention them... what do you recommend for those?
This video was very informative. Loved it. I wish I could give you two thumbs up.😊

Of course! Thanks for watching! ❤️
Perfection Becca!
Thank you so much! ❤️☺️
This was a great video.
Thank you so much for watching! :)
What about if you have a northwest window? What kind of plants would thrive there?
Where did the term “cash po” come from versus “catch pot”? I see a few plant gurus use it.
It's always good to get back to the basics. #teamtrees
Agreed!
Sending this to my mom so she quits killing mine
What did you say the white mineral deposits on terracotta is called? Can't seem to find it online haha

We can always continue to grow as plant parents :).

Just to interject- Venus Fly traps like direct sun. But that's literally the only one aha. A picky boy.
