I tracked down my 6th grade teacher several years ago. At that time he was at Delta State University and getting close to retirement. It turned out that my class had been his very first teaching job and he remembered not only me, but many of the kids in the class and some of the adventures we experienced. I sent him the class picture that I had somehow kept all those years, and added notes of what many of my classmates had accomplished after they grew up. Some had passed away - at least one had become a brain surgeon. He seemed very happy to have it. He wrote me that he had hung it on his wall and enjoyed showing it to his fellow faculty members while relating stories to them of his experiences in that first year of teaching. Sadly, he passed away only a couple of years later, just about the time he retired, but at least I was able to let him know that he was that 'one' teacher for me. His name was Joe Garrison, may he rest in peace. I've seen his obiturary online, with a picture of him as a 75 year old man, but to me, he'll always be that young teacher in his mid 20's, full of energy, with a kind heart, humor and a true interest in his kids.

I track down my 8th grade teacher. I had him in his first year after college as my English teacher. He was the best. He read to us for 1/2 hour from The Odyssey everyday. He made us WANT to read and write. Years later I saw him on TV after he'd written a number of books and was teaching at a major university. Such a great guy and meaningful to all of us in that class. I think my reaching out meant something to him; he'd just suffered the loss of one of his offspring. Bless your teachers and they'll bless you!

@Hanna Yachou I agree I always see how teachers in Japan and China are highly respected and its nice to see,
Over here in the west teachers are just underpaid and at least where I live in the US, teachers aren't always seen as someone to be respected outside of the actual school not just in real life but also in movies and TV quite often
Teachers can be antagonized on kids cartoons when in reality they shouldn't be bad and are very often nice people who try hard to give kids a good education.
As well as with Elders its not as taboo to disrespect your elders over here, you'll be seen as rude and annoying but its not the same as I would imagine it would be in the east.
I only know of people showing more respect to senior citizens and large amounts of respect to veterans and military, especially senior citizens that have fought in past wars
Personally I always respect my teachers and elders similar as they would in asia and I love asian culture and part of the reason is the amount of respect commonly shown to everyone

I'm a therapist and work in a family clinic in the Bronx. I grew up in Queens. One day I'm taking the kid I just had therapy with back to his family in the waiting area, when a lady who was working with his sister stopped me. She asked if I went to a certain school in queens as a kid. I was shocked and didn't understand what was going on. Turns out she was my kindergarten teacher and recognized me immediately after more than twenty years in a completely different part of the city, and we both happened to be working with the same exact family. Life is funny that way sometimes but it goes to show that (some) teachers are some of the purest humans out there.

A similar story from me. When I was in Vietnam in 1968, they flew hot meals in by helicopter for us on Thanksgiving. Inside the container was a note from a USO in Shreve City, Louisiana saying they provided my dinner for this holiday. So many years later, I'm a retired Marine living in 29 Palms, CA. had driven back and forth to my hometown of Watertown, NY about 8 or 9 times through the years. I try to go a different way each time. Wanted to see as much of America as I could. This time I'm cruising through Arkansas, and I saw the sign. I found the USO there and walked in. There are always some nice ladies to greet you in any USO. This one was no different. I told them my story and the fact that I'm well into my 70's. I never forgot that note and I wanted them to all know how much their efforts are appreciated. Smiles and hugs everywhere!

I was luck to have two such teachers in my life. My 6th grade teach ms Svenson and my freshman math teacher mr hopkins. Both gave me the desire and tools to be what I am today. Thank you.

My dad used to be a teacher. He always talks about his teaching days. Some times a student of his track his number (meeting in person isn't really possible because we moved countries) and my dad always seems to recognize them. They talk for hours. It's just really wholesome.
