We explore an abandoned French mansion.
We travel to the south of France in the humid summer heat to visit a 13th century fortified castle… It’s moats are now dry and its drawbridge long gone, its south and west wings were transformed during the renaissance, creating much of what remains here today.
It has been home to the same family for decades, passed down through the generations.
The final heir was a successful architect, with a passion for his work, which is proudly displayed throughout the home.
As we explore each finely decorated room,
amongst the heirlooms and the oddities, we discover mysterious symbols and hooded cloaks, perhaps the mark of a secret society.
What will come of the rich history within these walls and the irreplaceable contents?
Each room trapped so far back in the past.
Join us inside this prestigious restored castle and find out what other secrets it holds inside…

My friends in Scotland say it's no different there than here. Food prices went up, rents gone up, mine here in Indiana just raised another $50 but my income still the same. We poor will be on the streets one day if this keeps up. Sometimes I'd rather live in a cold castle then a place where you have no peace and quiet and no one ever fixes anything. That place would definitely have to be updated big time for someone now. Massive but beautiful! You cant afford the candles anymore and the wood for the fireplaces, back 100yrs ago the trees were many and today, doesn't pay to burn wood 24-7 like then.

I think men are finding it every bit as difficult to cope in this world which has gone crazy .. In fact, I really feel for my husband having to deal with the bitch-faced, gender-entitled women he has to work with. It's a screwed-up world and it's getting tougher and tougher regardless of gender.

PLEASE, Don't smear your fingers all over the old photos and film strips...I actually gasped when you carelessly yanked up antique books trying to "flip through" them. Antique books grow brittle from age and extremes in heat and cold they ear easily and the bindings and glue comes undone. One special original first edition could well pay for the estate. There may be family members who hope to own or sell these items for much needed cash because the later generations are not financially well off as their former relations were. The truth is no one lives there, but that doesn't mean it has no owners. A will working it's way through the Courts and if there is arguing between family members contesting the estate or there is some beaurocrat diligently searching for a long lost relation...this can go on for years. If relatives are located many of these items could be sold to cover the inevitable tax burden. Irrespective of all this...you don't own these things. Please be respectful of them. I don't mean to sound hyper-critical. Just be aware of the fact that at some point this was an exquisite, beautifully vibrant home built with a lot of hard work and love.

I can imagine this place when it was full of servants and families and life. I felt such sadness while you were going through seeing the disrepair and decay. These beautiful things meant so much to the families that lived here. You did a wonderful job of showing us into their lives of a time long forgotten. I can’t image what would lead to the abandonment of everything that was their home for generations.

That black Cape you looked at is called a Cope. It's what a Priest would have worn for certain liturgies and church ceremonies. As this cope is black in pre Vatican 2 days it would have been worn for funeral liturgies. Hope this info helps. Absolutely ❤️ your videos thank you for making them. Looks like many rooms were converted into bedsits and flats around 70's and 80's esp those with timber wall divisions and the many bathrooms. Maybe inhabited in recent times since there was a set of ear buds in a drawer.the Curiously what the preserved food was in jars you found but didn't say.

The estate is large and must have been beautifully kept once with walled areas and big gates. So much here. Thank you. I could tell you enjoyed this place, I sure did. The portraits with the Roman numerals are the later kings of France..Louis 15th as a child, and after the French Revolution, Louis the 18th and Charles 10th.

The drawings you wondered about were were of the various French kings. Louis le Grand was Louis the XIV, the longest ruling monarch in history, also known as the Sun King. He was very
proud of his nice legs. There was Louis the X111, Louis the XVI, married to Marie Antoinette, both beheaded in the French Revolution, and zi think Charles. X. People would have pictures of the monarchs in their homes.

Hello, I am new to your channel and enjoying it. I watch several other Urban Explorers, and enjoy something from each site. Love Old Castles, Old Palatial Homes, and especially all the Antiques and personal effects. Sad all this and the homes go to waste, and are left to rot- except on "film". BTW the book @27:18 has the old oil dipped technique some have revived today and that my friend Susie that makes paper also does beautifully. You float different colored oils on the surface of water in a tub and can then draw/pull oil colors into more complex designs on the surface (like "feathering"), then the paper is pulled through the oil- where it sticks onto the surface. I'm guessing they dipped the inner edge pages after book assembly- but no expert! Not sure what the term is, but paper makers and also people coating objects like guitars, and other objects are using this age old technique in unique cool new ways. The variety is endless and beautiful!

The weird stair case you found at 10:43 would have been servents stairs allowing them to travel through the house unseen as servant were expected to appear when needed and remain unseen the rest of the time.
The room those stairs came off looked like a ladies sitting room where the ladies of the house would gather to sew quietly or entertain female guests. The child's room next door may have been a play room and study space where the children would disappear to while the ladies sat in the sitting room.
That said, I'm no historian so please don't take this as gospel. Just a guess from my own understanding of a household such as this

How do u know they never come home?
    Who owns it now?
    Did they die?
    ECT.....
Here in America we can find the history on any property from the 1st owners to present.

French property inheritance laws dictate that all children must inherit equals shares. No will nor legal wrangling can over-ride this law, set in place (I believe) during Napoleon's rein. If the siblings do not ALL agree to sell, then the property can not be sold. If by default, the property stays in the family, no one person has responsibility for maintaining it. Most simply walk away because the costs to keep a chateau in good repair are prohibitive. It's archaic and so destructive to national heritage, and heartbreaking to see.

What I don't understand is why the owners leave things behind, especially those pieces of phenomenal furniture, art objects and paintings. Why not hire a salvage company to come in and take out what can be sold, sell it and not leave it to fall to ruin? I would love to have that huge shelf unit in that first room you went into. Maybe there are no heirs? Because you would think even if the heirs don't want the house, the least they could do is pay someone to empty it and sell the contents.

That little staircase behind the bed might have been for someones personal servant to come to them & help them with dressing etc, posh clothes were not so easy to put on in those days, what with corsets to lace up & bits that had to be pinned into place & sometimes fantastic wigs & hair-pieces to augment what the wearer had naturally. Originally of course the servant would have had to bring jugs of hot water for washing etc.

The box in the "shrine"/baby's room was likely originally made to hold the Communion elements of water and wine (I'm guessing). When an urbex sees a square stool/pillow by the bedside and thinks it’s for stepping up into bed and completely overlooked it’s for kneeling down and praying. 😳

I'M A NEW SUBSCRIBER! What an amazing place that was! The amount of bedrooms there were phenomenonal. Some of the beds were beautiful, too. Just a shame that it's standing there rotting away. I absolutely loved this.

Those lithographs were of French kings!
There were many Louis, the last being Louis XVI, and Charles the 10th. Love your channel but you guys need to read more and educate yourselves more if your going to be going thru historic buildings.
Also, you should close the open windows in these buildings when you can to try to hold the rot back to some degree.
One more thing, you don't seem like readers since you seem to ignore the books most of the time, which i could NOT do, but it would be nice if you would find the first printed page of some of these books and tell us when they were published. some of these books look like they are up to 300 years old. just some helpful advice, I hope.

"letum quam lutum" --- death, then scavenge ??? the motto on the family crest. which depicts a crow eating some kind of carrion. so, kill and plunder? very 13th century indeed.

I lo ed the decor. The dishes were beautiful! I wish we knew the family history on this one. If the last occupant was an architect , more is the pity that his home is not preserved. So sad, so beautiful! I have now subscribed. You two show much care and respect and I appreciate that.

I'm not stating this as fact but I saw on some historical show that the windowed room above the bed was used when there was a wedding in royal or high society families. The parents sat in the room on the wedding night to make sure the vows were consummated.

The ‘artwork’ on the edges and covers of books is called marbling. It’s created by dropping oil based inks on the surface of water, swirling to create a pattern, and dipping the paper in. The oil clings to the paper and transfers the pattern. It was particularly popular in the Victorian era.

So no one thinks it’s odd that their are tons of abandoned castles and estates throughout the world, where many look like the owners left most of their belongings behind in some sort of rush. There are historians who believe that the serfs revolted against the nobility. It would explain why commoners actually own property. In the past the nobility owned all the property. I hardly think they hall decided of the kindness of their hearts to divi up their land holdings to the poor. Interestingly enough there was an historian in the US who produced the thirteenth amendment he claims was actually ratified. It states that no person holding a title of nobility whether they are born with it or it is granted to them as would be to a squire /lawyer.. the nobility who came to the US dropped their titles and took positions of power ( illegally) if that amendment was ratified. The Boston Brahmins were all of nobility. Every President since Washington has a line to nobility. The 14 presidents before Washington do not. In the US children are not taught about those presidents, one being black. You have to ask yourself what is our true history. There is more going on her than captivating castles

It could be turned into a museum , some rooms were magnificent historically, but I guess the French are not interested as they have too many of them. If the doors were secure and boarded up how exactly did you get in?

The room overlooking the child's room was originally for the nanny. It was made into a wine storage later. It was a bad idea to store wine there as the water heater would make the tempature to high for wine..
