I prefer casual. When I get competitive, I lose sight of having fun and only focus too much on winning

I went to an X-wing tournament only once. The focus on winning sucked all the fun out of the game for me.
You are absolutely right, honestly. I used to play Magic at a tournament level, and it caused me to drop the game for almost a decade. I got back into it, but only casually.
I got introduced to Legion when a friend of mine gave me some 3d printed resin miniatures and taught me how to paint them. I couldn't afford the game but he even gave me an assembled and primed core set and I've been hooked ever since. I could never play in a tournament since about a third of my minis are custom-made with alternate color schemes, but hey, it's good enough for all my friends and I, and I'm happy with that. Some people look down on players who use 3d printed minis, but I definitely support the game and buy my share of official units. To each their own.

I'm more on the competitive side. The time spent list building trying trying to optimize your points and plan for what you might be facing. The thrill of testing it out against others who've done the same. It's the challenge that excites us competitive types. And its not "all about winning". Ive had a blast at tournaments where I've gotten crushed. I think it's the challenge plus the comraderie you develope playing with your community over and over again that really makes the games enjoyable. And yes, I always take it easy on new players. They are the life blood of all such games.
Competitive players keep games alive, casual players keep franchises alive. Both are needed, and need each other, even if they don't like to admit it.
The older I get the less I care about winning and the more I do about having people to play with. I used to be one of those people who would snipe you from the other end of the map a few times in the past but I'm almost fully casual now.
I just went to a Star Wars Unlimited store Showdown. My wife was at home with our three children (including 1 month old). I was stressed the whole time and though i made top 8 out of 24, my time spent wasnt very fun and instead of it being a recharging time out, i came home feeling physically awful after being out almost 10 hours. Other times ive gone out for a more casual lower stakes night, ive had way more fun. (Important note, mother in law was over to help while i got some important recharge "me time"). Important lesson i learned, i like to win, but not at the tournament level.
Just try really hard to casually win. Best of both worlds

I really enjoy both. Playing in tourneys and testing/tweaking and analyzing lists from a competitive standpoint is such a blast. But I also enjoy building much more fun and casual lists that just do fun things or make sense thematically.
My motto is that I will always play to win, but I won’t always build to win. Even in a casual game I will still try to win with the tools that I have, but I have no issue at bringing weaker suboptimal lists against newer players to ease them into the game. Both aspects are important to a games growth and longevity.

I play X-wing casually. The 2.5 AMG rules have not allowed many ships I own to be competitive or even legal. The current rules make for less balance and limited meta lists favoring refining the same list over and over. I bring two different lists to play two games casually. Load-outs favor specific pilots within ship platforms limiting pilots as well as ships. I wish AMG would have been more flexible allowing tournaments with the older ships that I purchased. Casual seems the only choice in my area now. We play 2.0 rules and I can fly any ships with any pilots I own! What a deal!!!
I also fall in between. Once in a while I will be more competitive just to really test myself and my build. But moments like Rex Spartan Kicking Cad Bain off a building does add fun moments to a game.
I was a casual player until I got into XWing Miniatures. I tried the tournaments and got hooked. Spent many years going and playing and having a great time. I think there's an artifical seperation people make between casual and competitive. I move between the modes all the time.

Casual all the way. Games are meant to be fun. Casual players can learn a ton from competitive players but for me gaming is about stress release, and having a good time.

For me, it depends on the game. Blood Bowl I'm a competitive player, and I play stunty teams when I'm teaching or playing a league with players less experienced than myself.
Necromunda, Legion, xwing, and Song I'm a more casual player.
Growing a community for a game it is important to focus on the casual aspect, it isn't fun to get skull stomped when you don't yet understand the game, and we've lost a few Legion players because some of our group are high end tournament players who don't know how to take their foot off the gas...
Fully casual, friends and family only. Theme and hobby are the is most important part of the game for me. But only ignore rules when it works against theme, like building all Mando list in Legion.
Casual is more relaxing and dare I say more fun?
I know a lot of guys who like the competetive side. As long as everybody knows how you want to play the game everything should be fine! :-)
I'm a totally casual player and I play in a very casual group aside from like most groups he one or two guys that are hype competitive. I love the fun and thematic ability of playing casual list like running trippile wookies in Legion at tournaments when they were horrible or playing all robotic characters in MCP. i enjoy having fun playing and I also enjoy attending tournaments and seeing and meeting the people I watch play the game on UA-cam. MCP is a great game with an awesome competitive and casual community which is one of the main reasons I love the game. Great vid. 😀
I think both need to exist. I have fun casually but it’s competitive where I feel like I really learn the rules. If I only play casual I get the feeling I would play things wrong a lot of the time.
Both have their place.
Casual tournaments and kitchen table games are great just to have some fun and it is for everyone.
Competetive play is a great step up and allows you to play games that you wont see in home, high level play is always amazing to watch.
We need each other, that's it.
I enjoy casual gathering with old buddies( who all bought into Armada back in the beginning). All of us in our 50s and 60s.We all know the rules and keep up to date by watching UA-cam like Tim, Ion Radio and others who contribute for the sake of the game. As much as I would love to play in a tourney, being 65, It would be annoying for all involved because I'd have to go for a pee every 20 minutes...
Casual is where Legion Proxy play is great. My 224th Mudjumpers are so much fun to use.😏
I’m all casual. Competitive play just leads to these “meta” lists where everyone brings the same combination of particular ships and upgrades just to maximise their chance of winning tournaments.
For me it’s all just about having fun with giant space battles based on my favourite sci-fi universe.
I'm a casual player. But I want everyone to have fun, so when I'm playing a competitive player I try to elevate my challenges. In either case, I try to mix things up and keep my opponent on their toes.
I often start a game with a competitive list, play like a casual player, and then, when it gets close near the end of an epic Armada battle, I play like a competitive player, but not cheating.
I do partake in some competitive play, but I like to use the casual play approach to my tournaments. Last x-wing tournament I was in I brought Dash, Wedge, Tyco, and some y-wings, simply because I wanted to use the new it-2400. It worked but was not optimal by any means.
I believe that the intention (competitive vs casual) should always be explicitly communicated ahead of time. I hate playing ANY game (tabletop, video games, sports) if not everyone is on the same page. If there's a competition coming up, I believe it's important to practice for it accordingly and as long as your opponents know that, you're good. But if you wanna try some experimental build, your favorite themed army, etc then your opponent(s) shouldn't be trying to kill you with the best meta of the time (unless otherwise agreed upon). I think there's a time and place for each and i love both but they both must be agreed upon ahead of time.

I mostly play casual, I will play in a more casual tournament, an Aces High tournament sounds fun. If you ever see me at worlds it will be when Mining Guild TIEs are on top of the meta.
The last tournament I went to kind of soured me on playing for a while.
I don't think that was the intent, but it has been hard to get over that unwelcoming feeling.

I am kind of like you. I play a lot of lists for Legion that are fun, but I do have a very good tournament list that I love to play. I love fun legion games , but I also like the good tournaments
15:35 I had this experience in Planet side. very first login, first spawn. Looked around for 2-3 seconds, killed. Spawned again, killed just as quickly. I quit out of the game, and uninstalled it.
I'm more on the casual side than competitive.
Competitive : It is important. Its how the devs can see and iron out issues like balance and maybe come up with ideas for future content.
Problems is, if the game becomes popular enough, devs *tend* to focus content toward competitive play much more than they do casual play. And if its popularity continues, the game can turn into ONLY focusing on competitive play, ruining it for casual players because new products or rules get released that go against the casual player. (Pretty much any trading card game is really terrible about this). This also leads to casual players and potential new players having difficultly finding new people to play with as communities such as Game stores, tend to all want to focus their play on the competitive side, and not on the casual. As far as players, some do tend to take it far too seriously (cheating, lacking etiquette, ect..)
Casual : Is, imo, more important because this will (likely) be where the *bulk* of the playerbase is. Alot of new ideas for the game come from this community.
And yet, if the game is too casual, and especially one designed to have continual content for it, its a bit without *some* kind of incentive other than "look a new thing". harder to promote that content, or get people to want to buy it. It can also prevent mechanics from being properly balanced or addressed if its not shown in an obvious way (ie in tournaments). This *can* also lead to too much homebrew play, where some may adapt their own rule set, and play that way so much, they refuse to play by the written rules. And if new players learn by homebrew rules, it can create issues later if they try to play with others who dont.
Recent example, X-wing. X-wing I felt was in a good place with 2E. But apparently, Asmodee didnt, and felt like they were loosing too much money with it. So they shunted it over to AMG, who in turn focused on making it a lot more competitive. This drove away a huge chunk of the casual playerbase, and now the game will likely die because of it.
Armada on the flip side, didnt have enough competitive play, and so wasnt focused on and didnt get alot of new content for it, which make it very difficult for the game to grow (at least, from my observations).
I never really played competitively intentionally from the beginning of a play. I mean I never have a set strategy when I usually start playing or I have a vague idea of what could "combo" in terms of mechanics. I am rather trying to optimize early mid-game when the the different mechanism/strategies from each players start to set... until there is an amazing move which may cost the victory but to good to let pass. I would be only fully competitive only in coop games team VS team or all players vs the game because there is nothing worse than to play with someone who try to intentionally ruin the game. Beside that, Games are made to have fun by ... playing the game! I mean following the rules. official or homebrew (most likely to happen when quite familiar with the game), doesn't really matter to m as long as everyone is agreeing to them. At some point you ll get competitive when playing casually. it just means that you love and played the game so much than you know it and its tricks.
Casual all the way. People tend to lose the idea of just having fun and only see winning as fun. Competitive also funnels you into only playing a few certain ways. Yeah with casual you still need some sort of strategy or gameplay plan, but sometimes you just wanna run an entire army of vehicles or just basic foot soldiers.
Competitive also has its own place and helps with buffs, nerfs and other game balance, but try to keep competitive play to competitions.
I play Armada and Legion with a pretty decent sized group of people and the main organizer of our group outside of myself absolutely does not like the direction those games have been taken since being sold and is kind of this die hard FFG fan so he'll just make executive decisions about reverting to old rules or not using some of the new units for those games. This gets to be kind of a problem because I feel like I'm in a little bit of the same boat where I'm a little more casual and I tend to prioritize fun, I also like to play by the rules in order to get better on not confuse home rules with official rules. None of us are super experienced and haven't been playing since launch or anything but this individual is the most experienced with both systems and a lot of the players in our group are fairly new so they kind of just go with what he says. I've spoken with him before about the issue and he tends to take the criticism bad and just kind of reverts to AMG bad Asmodee bad Disney Star Wars terrible.
I prefer casual but pretty much everyone I know is competitive so in 40K I haven't won a game since 8th edition and I pretty much get tabled by the end of turn 2. In Legion my best result is 1 tied game and haven't won any.
Do you think that companies like Asmodee frown on TTS? If it meant getting more physical content would paying for TTS items make sense?
I've personally had to give up a lot of competitive because I break controllers. Or did. I try to do co-op on games when possible.
Star wars and LOTR are my favourite i.p.s bringing a story to the game is what i enjoy. Or reenacting scenes from the films is a big draw.
I only play casual and only ever play total annihilation.

I love my casual play but would love to get into competitive play but the local gaming store that has an xwing group didn't like the way I approached my stragety to play. So l Was very turned off

Casual lets you make lists you would never ever bring to a competitive game. I personally like making republic lists that are based off clone wars episodes.
Never been a fan of home brew. I like a mix of casual and competitive.
Competitive players always ruin everything for casuals. See X-Wing Miniatures. See Legion. See Armada. See every tabletop game, MMORPG, and MOBA ever produced. Everything made worse by a vocal minority of idiots who demand changes that benefit only themselves. The sick irony is that when developers cater to that vocal minority, it's often at the behest of social media influencers who get all the games and expansions for free in exchange for favorable reviews. And then they all get butthurt when games die after being abandoned by the casuals who actually paid for the products.
