There's a lot of varying scenarios for meeting Codsworth depending on how far in the story you are. He skips over the search for example if you return after saving Preston and the crew and immediately becomes a companion. If you find Codsworth after learning the Institute has Shaun but before you infiltrate it you can tell Codsworth the Institute has him to which he acts shocked and asked if you had Shaun committed. And if you find Codsworth after meeting Father and finding out he's your son you can tell this to Codsworth too. I think there's also dialogue if you tell Codsworth you found Shaun but he's dead.
Oh yes. There are lines if Shaun is dead. . .and yeah it's depressing if you never talked to Codsworth at the start of the game but do so after killing Shaun and destroying the Institute.. . .

If you take Codsworth with you to meet up with Father after the battle of Bunker Hill, he has no special dialogue at all.
Weird. I've never had bloatflies in that first house.
If you kill Shaun before meeting the codsworth he will say a very rare line of dialogue... ;)
If it's consistently repeatable, it's not rare.
