    Good job getting it done Frank. Not having tire tools is tempting Murphy for a😊 flat tire. Limited range sucks but at least you’re moving forward. With the KTM’s having a DR650 with a big tank would make a great life boat with 300 mile range.

    • @OneOldManRiding
      @OneOldManRiding  3 місяці тому +1

      Hello John, the 790 let me down by throwing a code and being disabled from something as simple as a battery going dead. Folks in NY replace batteries yearly when they forget to tender them
      I have never heard of a bike having an issue like I am having with the 790. So far the 390 has been reliable for 25K miles. - Frank

  • @danreich4320
    @danreich4320 3 місяці тому +1

    Two questions:
    What happened to the 790?
    One tank got you 75 miles? Thats under 40 mpg. Something is wrong if your mpg dropped that much.

    • @OneOldManRiding
      @OneOldManRiding  3 місяці тому +1

      Hello Dan, The 790 batteyr was dead, when I put in a brand-new battery, it threw an MTC error. No throttle. I have been told that it may be a bad cable from the ignition, and I need to have the ignition replaced.
      It was not out of fuel at 75, merely at the one bar, the area I was in was not heavily populated, and I did not want to risk it. That said, my Honda gets terrible gas mileage compared to stock, as its not remotely stock. It's been tuned for offroad and when I am at highway speed, its working way harder, and hotter than stock. I would never take this bike over 55 mph if I had another option. - Frank

    I live in Washington state and own a CRF300L Rally and I am 72 and I have traveled loaded down with camping gear and have never got less than 65 MPG. I think those heavy tubes are killing your gas milage. I road from Chelan Washington to Burns Oregon and held my speed at about 65 and never got gas milage that bad. That is a 407 mile trip in two days with lots of ups and downs on Highway 395 once you get into Oregon. If lighter tubes and tires don't improve your milage I would be checking to see if something in the engine is not working write.

      No, I'm not a hotel traveler. I'm more of a "go see friends and family" traveler. I'll go on camping trips occasionally for meetups and family outings. Maybe an Airbnb once in a while. Hotel is kind of a last resort when I'm out somewhere and the need to stay somewhere arises.
      I'll pick a bike depending on the trip, or plan out a trip based on a bike. It depends on the terrain conditions. Some bikes are mile-eaters and those are pretty cumbersome for rough dirt. The bikes nimble on rough terrain aren't gonna be dispatching big miles on asphalt in a quick and comfortable manner. So let common sense be your guide and pick the tool applicable to the task at hand.

      Hello Matt, I really wanted to get to that Rally, and I like to arrive on a bike! Thanks to KTM, this was my only option, and I had a great time!
      Honestly... I have no confidence in the 790 at this point. I had an electrical issue in South Dakota, and had to buy a battery, now I have an issue due to a dead battery. On a bike that now only has 15K miles on it. (I put 10K of them on)
      While the bike gave me no issues in Canada (9days) and only the one out west (18 days), after the severe failure (Which may be an ignition cable issue I am being told from FB) disabling the bike in Tennessee, I just do not feel like I want to ride this bike a great distance again. I feel like the universe is telling me to sell it!

And I know all the offroad guys I ride with have a KTM and a backup bike. Interstate on a CRF286L, impressive & foolish! 🤣🤣🤣. Glad you made it safely. Tubes suck for paved travel - if you have lighter, more road biased tires you can change one more easily, but you definitely need the tools.
