  • This video was recorded on April 27, 2003 and is the first known video recorded from an ornithopter, or flapping-wing aircraft, while it is flying. The flight took place at the Macedon, New York, flying field of Rochester Aero Modeling Society. The camera was mounted on a Skybird ornithopter designed by Sean Kinkade and remotely piloted by David Riedel with video equipment installed by Nathan Chronister. The ornithopter, with its seven-foot wingspan and 1/2 horsepower internal combustion engine, easily lifted the 7 ounce payload. Video was recorded onboard the ornithopter using a Kodak MC3 digital camera.

I expected a jittery view, and that’s what I got. Was there a reason the camera was obscured by a wing?

We mounted the camera facing out the side of the body. That is why the wing got in the way. I'm going to make a video soon about how to mitigate the shaking of ornithopter videos.

Wow sir. It was amazing to see aerial view from it. You have added a new chapter in surveilance.
