Cool video! Good job. Keep it up! Yeah I agree about OKC. For Providence, its not PT Town, you might be confusing it for Provincetown. The sign for Providence is shaking P up and down.
Of course, sign variations are a-plenty. If Ben doesn't object to being subjected to positive criticism, there's a few variations that I know of so far.. 1) Augusta, Maine = same sign as Austin, TX 2) Tallahassee, FL = same sign as GOVERNMENT (index finger only) 3) Nashville, TN = "N" handshape w/ same movement as GOVERNMENT Ben shared w/ us 2 variations for COLORADO, good! I suggest he re-edit video to include variations for capitals. Plus, the video was easy to view cuz Ben is CUTE! :-P
I'm from Tennessee and I've never seen the sign for Nashville like that! The sign we use for Nashville is N like sign for government. And Frankfort is F like state.
The sign for PIerre (capital of South Dakota) is the sign CAPITAL as well. Great job on the video. It is a great resource. I love all the positive feedback that tells the correction instead of telling him he is wrong. Teamwork!!
Good stuff, Ben, but these are lovely attempts. I'm from Tennessee, and I have never seen Nashville signed like that. The folks in the state sign Nashville with a N in the government sign movement. If you had signed that to me, I would have said "Huh? What's that?" Im glad that you used the correct sign for Oregon. Bravo! but people in Oregon sign Salem with a S in an inverted L movement like Chicago and Austin. The sign you used for Salem is actually for Seattle, Washington.
This is very helpful, even reading all the comments is helpful- we need all the info we can get! It would be awesome to see you, Ben, or another Deaf person, travel the US, and compile a video of all the signs Deaf people have in each state for their own capitol city and state. Or do an internet share (probably easier!!!) of people sending in video replies, then compile all the capitol cities and state signs into one video??? Could you do that?
FYI Lansing is a signed city. HS: L by your temple palm out. then move L downward then twist until the index hand is touching the temple and palm faces inside.
Lots of people are in here spamming "WRONG" blabh blah. If you know anything about ASL, you know that most name signs are arbitrary and depend on what is commonly accepted. If there is no "commonly accepted" name sign for a city, then spelling it is correct, thus making these spelled out city names not "wrong". If you wish to add to this list however, make a positive entry with the suggested sign that you know. Like: Madison WI... is signed like "GOVERNMENT"
Montgomery, AL is not fingerspelled. It's signed with an 'M', moving like "government, capital." Some others use the sign "government, capital" instead of the 'M' sign to mean Montgomery.
I agree with jaytalex10. I'm from Oklahoma City and we do not say 'Okla City'. We signed 'O K C'. There are some of other signs from different cities are not correct. Please ask others from each state to verify the correct sign.
I wonder if some of the signs are actually wrong like some comments say or if its just one of the many possible signs. In my experience each state and city have more than one sign maybe two or three and the are all right. People from one area of the state might have one sign while people from a different area might have a different sign.
Someone else down below already said the sign for Providence is wrong- The sign for Provincetown is also wrong. The sign for Provincetown is fingerspelled in PT
Really fast at signing, it looks like they just fast forwarded through it all. But at least this saves me time since I need to know all the signs by tomorrow for sign language class. LOL
hi- Good job! However, there are two that I need to let you know. Salem (Oregon) that you signed was "Seattle." Salem- "S" same movement as Austin (Texas). AND Olympia (Washington)- "O" same movment as "government." Hope you learn something new from me, I'm from the northwest. ;0)
Lansing, MI has sign for Lansing. Not fingerspelling. Letter L is signing like government. Wrong sign for Nashville, TN. Letter N is signing like government.
or i should've made that simple and said sign like GOVERMENT but with an L ;) make another one??! I would love to show my ASL students this video when we focus on fingerspelling/signs for different states.
I was kind little shock and I learn from Florida people told me that T to top head as govern to say Tallahasse and I do think your city sign is not correcct and need to have ask people different state what their sign for Capital of City.
I am from FLORIDA, that is no sign for Tallahassee. We used index finger, sign the same way as government. I noticed many of these signs are wrong. It needs to be redone or delete.
Cool video! Good job. Keep it up!

Thank you for the correct information.

Thank you for posting this!

In Michigan we have a sign for Lansing... It's the L handshape and it swings towards the forehead like the sign for capitol or government

One of my friends from Little Rock, AR fingerspells LR.
WOW very nice. Thank you
Just like each state has their own view of "SLANG" so does ASL, don't judge too hard. Same way in different Countries.
I agree with jaytalex10. I'm from Oklahoma City and we do not say 'Okla City'. We signed 'O K C'. There are some of other signs from different cities are not correct. Please ask others from each state to verify the correct sign.
That's correct that we have to spell "O-K-C" as in "Oklahoma City" but we do not sign "Okla City"....NEVER!
I think we sign Jefferson city different in STL too...I need to fact check.
I wonder if some of the signs are actually wrong like some comments say or if its just one of the many possible signs. you signed Columbia, SC wrong. It signed almost like dollar but with closed O handshape.
Cont... Juneau: Wrong, again... However your signing style were very crispy and LOUD! Good vlog!
Someone else down below already said the sign for Providence is wrong- The sign for Provincetown is also wrong. The sign for Provincetown is fingerspelled in PT
Cool video Ben - ask Lilah about the sign for Madison :)
FYI - there's a sign for Topeka. :) Same as Trenton.
Hello i am deaf and me from in mexican. Same 50 states and 50 capitals ASL used or other new asl change capitals and state?. Thank you. Meet with you
Frankfort, KY has sign Letter F is signing like constitution, Tallahassee, FL is "government" + florida
There's plenty of variation in these. Where are you from, Ben?
Frankfort, Kentucky do have a sign for frankfort
Oklahoma City fingerspells OKC, not Okla. City
Really fast at signing, it looks like they just fast forwarded through it all. But at least this saves me time since I need to know all the signs by tomorrow for sign language class. LOL
hi-
Good job! However, there are two that I need to let you know. Salem (Oregon) that you signed was "Seattle." Salem- "S" same movement as Austin (Texas). AND Olympia (Washington)- "O" same movment as "government."
Hope you learn something new from me, I'm from the northwest. ;0)
Lansing, MI has sign for Lansing. Not fingerspelling. Letter L is signing like government. Wrong sign for Nashville, TN. Letter N is signing like government.
That's right! Lansing is L like government :) Hope you can make an updated version of this video, Ben!
or i should've made that simple and said sign like GOVERMENT but with an L ;)
make another one??! I would love to show my ASL students this video when we focus on fingerspelling/signs for different states.
I was kind little shock and I learn from Florida people told me that T to top head as govern to say Tallahasse and I do think your city sign is not correcct and need to have ask people different state what their sign for Capital of City.
I notice you signed Rhode Island = RI then Providence = Provincetown? Provincetown is the tip of Cape Cod.
You signed Nashville, TN wrong, it signs with "N" with saying it like government sign.
Bismarck, ND: Wrong,.. Juneau, AK:
You forgot add Washington D.C.
The sign for Augusta, ME is also wrong.
Columbia sign is wrong!
Sign for Concord, NH not right sign.
