- Learn how to sign the 50 states of America in American Sign Language (ASL). *2nd Edition of 50 States of America in ASL is now available on the ASLtree UA-cam Channel! Link: • 50 States of America -... . Watch in HD! Closed-Captioned (CC).
Notes/Changes for this 1st edition of 50 States in ASL video:
CALIFORNIA: Use the first sign for California, the second sign for California is outdated/not widely accepted.
ILLINOIS: Some Deaf people sign the state Illinois more naturally by signing I-ILY-ILY.
KANSAS: Another variation for Kansas is spelled KS.
OREGON: Oregon sign is old/incorrect. It should be handshape-O moving in circles, where one can see the circles clearly.
I think your videos are wonderful and clear. I can't thank you enough for the effort you put into creating them and for having them public, too. I am an interpreter and teaching ASL as well and, even though I have been in the field for over 20 years, I try to include videos created by deaf educators with every topic I teach. I always want the students to see that what I teach comes from educators like YOU! Thanks a million!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have an asl presentation tmrw and this helped sm
Thank you so much for this- I’m just beginning to learn ASL but I think I may have caught a few sly interpretations... so much to learn...I really do appreciate you so much!!
Hows your asl
Does anyone just sign STATE + the 2 letter abbreviation such as "AL, AK, NY, VA, etc."?
Looking forward to your 2nd edition so I can share with those who attend our ASL Meetup... Cheers !
I really enjoy your videos... Ok.. I like the ones with the kids even more :D - But I can understand you so well even without captions or voice over. Thank you for sharing your skills with us.
Your videos are great and very helpful.

привет. ваш рассказал о новости очень отлично.
Thank you for the easy to follow lesson. I just subscribed.
Thank you so much for these videos
This is great, thank you so much.
I really loved how this video is comprehensive and beautifully produced.
I am from Canada so the sign for Oregon is my home province - Ontario :-)
But, I thought that Oregon was a lf-hand horizontal B-shape with the rt-hand bouncing 'O' from the join of the index finger to the tip? (hope I am describing that right ) like the old SEE sign for 'or' (I think)
I'm from CT and my friend(deaf) taught me a different way to sign CT. Flat non dominant hand and with dominant hand sign C on top, T on bottom.
This is excellent! I was going to make a home video of me signing all 50 states..then I remembered you may have done it! Love the video and my students are to write the abbrev/how to sign for each state. Fantastic resource !
I appreciate the videos but appreciate the words displayed explaining the picture even more. I don't remember all of these States!
I’m learning ASL but I don’t know the USA map better if you put the mane on the top , now I have to see the map I’m from here that’s why but thanks so much.
Thank you so much, helped alot.
Thank you!
Good job !
Good video! Did you know that they have this sign for Wisconsin? You should find out eventually :)
Cod u sign car brands please
Excellent video, thank you!!
are you on some movements in the arms and hands and fingers I know half of them so far I don't know I can remember what they are in generalizaciones
I was able to identify stanley Idaho as soon as that picture popped up. I love going there with my family :D
Hello
I am Deaf teacher teaching deaf students.
I wanted to know and ask how is it said a Maimi city signs?
It be nice if you would have said with the states are for people who don't know geography
if u knew the manual alphabet, you'd know, just sayin
I see what you are saying, if you click CC (Closed Captioning) ON to English, then you will see the names of the states. Hope that helps. Im trying to give ASL learners a choice whether to learn without the help of English subtitles.. so the captioning is the perfect solution to meet all preferences.
Is the sign for Massachusetts the signs M, A, & S together?
Grazie.
any know 50 states birds in asl
Ive taken ASL classes and my teacher has signed Colorado both ways but C-O-L-O is more acceptable, also the same as
California
What’s the sign for a city in Pennsylvania - Pittsburg? Is it same as Maine??
I do see the sign for Delaware signed as "First" because the "D" sign is there and Delaware is the First State
thank you
First sign for Oregon is rarely used here :)
I always thought that each state in the USA should of had a sign name in ASL
Something from state that made it unique instead of just fs
Your first sign for Oregon is NO-NO! I lived in Eugene for ten years and they prefer to sign "O" in circle. Otherwise, great job.
FYI native Californians shake the "Y" two times for YELLOW. The sign for NY moves it back and forth on the palm.
Michigan State looks like a mitten hand. Montana sign like a museum. It's confusing. Some Deaf said Montana sign like mountains with the ”M”. New Mexico likes Mexico instead of NM. I think you could update a new video of 50 states nicknames.
Sign for Michigan is wrong. One hand forms mitten and the other hand draws a curved line over it to show both the UP and LP of Michigan.
I don't know what sign for Florida i think it was better but it was hard sign but thank you!
omg it's cedar point at 6:16 :D
Brasil 💕usa 💕thank you 😇are oi happy 😍💖love ASL (ILES
🙏 merci...merci...merciiiiii 👍
Good plus you need to add Washington DC as well. (fingerspell DC)
catworld4 I would have added Washington DC, however, it is not one of the 50 states. It is the U.S. capital, but not a state. I thought too, but I signed and included that in the cities video.
I think you need to double check both your signs for Oregon with native Oregonians. They are not subordinate to Washington and you might find disagreement on the movement with the "O" also. This infection must stop! ha
Not going to lie I don't know my states by flag or picture on map so it kind of didn't help me all the way. I will have to look them all up.
There is a 2nd way for Delaware. Use the D and turn toward ourselves.
Sign name for Oregon is incorrect. Oregon is a circle in the front not same as Washington.
As a native deaf Coloradan, the signs for Colo is incorrect. It's C-O-L-O. That's it. Just like M-I-N-N or W-I-S or F-L-A. :)
Yeah, you are correct, it is spelled C-O-L-O. I did put annotation and captions both on the video to explain that should be spelled C-O-L-O. The new states video will have that correct sign COLO. Thanks for sharing! :)
Wow
Forgot to add... for Illinois... I-L-L but most people would sign I-'ILY'-'ILY'.
Jeff Greer To sign ILL more naturally, you are right, it is signed I-ILY-ILY. Will add that to second edition of 50 states and in the meantime, teach ASL students that natural sign. Thanks for your feedback :)
Ah non !!! I am sick of seeing any spells .. When I used VRS on ASL for English Service, I saw the ASL interpreter which signed all of sudden it spelled too way fast and I could not catch what it said .. That is why I was extremely disappointed !! I know LSQ (langue des signes québécoise) which it barely spells .. Anyway, I learned Mississippi signing “same sign 🤟, index finger on chin twisting” and Florida similar California but just next to forehead with middle finger moving forward ahead ..
Who else is coming from mrs Lehmans class ?
Overall, great job!!
For Idaho, there is another sign for Idaho when you sign potato, because they're famous for potatoes :)
Kansas - can spell K-S
For Mississippi - there is another sign - just like 1st sign in california but right below your chin :)
Oregon - ekk youre gonna disappoint many oregonians - they're not like washington, just sign O and sign in circle
:)
Frances Sorrentino Hey Frances, yeah, when I was making this video, I already knew that circle O for Oregon, I don't know why I signed the old sign, I guess old habits are hard to kick. For the next video, I will add KS for Kansas and the other sign for Mississippi. Thanks for watching and giving me a feedback! :)
For Idaho, the sign (fingerspelling) shown is the most acceptable sign. Signing potato--or signing like Washington, but with an I handshape--are both considered ignorant and mark someone as an outsider.
lavondrew Right ON!
lavondrew I’m a native Idahoian and deaf and have lived in north and south Idaho and north uses i like Washington and south uses potato, it’s actually a marker of an outsider when someone spells the whole thing
Missing DC District of Columbia.
Hey, could you add the states name in writing as well? So that those of us, who is not from the US, can identify the states more easily. :)
Yes, I am planning to add captioning very soon for those who are not familiar with the state shapes and flags. :)
Marena Soli Captions have been added to the video. You can now view it with captions. Hope that helps. :)
Here's my few feedback on three ASL for states.
1. California first one is correct. Rid second one. I am native Californian.
2. I used to live in Oregon as I understand that Oregenians don't like sign similar to Washington. They prefer "O" in circle. They like their own trademark. They don't like cat copy Washington.
3. Michigan ASL is similar to ASL for states. Instead of "S" use "M". Because of Michigan state shape look like hand.
Renny Kassel Yeah, I remember the "O" in a circle for Oregon that like the sign for Ontario, right? Are you sure that nobody signs the second sign for California anymore? I don't use it myself either. That's cool about the other sign for MICH. Will keep in mind when I make a second edition of the 50 states. I appreciate your feedback. Thanks!
Just a heads up about MICH sign with M handshape. Not many Michiganders use it. I have seen some elementary school Deaf use it that learned it from an interpreter.
Also, Wisconsin has another sign, with the W handshape brushing against the chin, same motion as sign for lie.
CHS ASL I am from Michigan, and how he signed it was right except the H is more straight out, not on the side.
There is a 2nd sign for Hawaii. The sign used in the video is an old sign.
Really? Then could you please show the 2nd sign? Post a video of it and share? Thanks!
I don't have a way to post it but it looks like the hula, similar to waves (no hip shaking) :) This link has 3 signs: old sign, abbreviated sign, and new sign www.signingsavvy.com/sign/HAWAII/1463/3
In 2013, researchers published their findings of Hawaiian Sign Language. In HSL, the original sign for Hawaii is like the one shown in the video, but uses a 1 handshape instead of H. That seems to be the sign the Hawaiian Deaf community is now reverting to using.

lavondrew Thanks for sharing! Interesting. :)
привет. ваш рассказал о новости очень отлично.
"Hi. The way you explained things was excellent"
What was the first state?
Alabama.
I normally sign "KS" for Kansas.
Yeah, I plan to add KS for Kansas in the 2nd edition. Thanks for letting me know, Scott DeLoach
this would be great IF I KNEW WHERE EACH STATE WAS FISULHMuyasgmefouagwmroHGAKSFMUYGFM
WRONG sign Oregon as Washington!
Fs
Your sign for Colorado is not widely acceptable
Edie David Thanks for letting me know. I showed two signs for Colorado, which one do you use and is widely accepted?
chsasl Neither.. It should be spelled 'Colo'
Edie David
Ahhh. Ok, will include that in 2nd edition. Thanks for letting me know. :)
California is the best I live in California
thank you
