It is great that you show different variations on the signs. I have never seen that sign for England. That is the traditional ASL sign for France. The LSF signers I know sign France without the twisting movement - LSF handshape F (which is slightly different from the ASL handshape for F) moves straight across from the contralateral to the ipsilateral side of the space in front of the chest. The sign you showed for Uruguay is sometimes used for Bolivia, right? The sign you show for Belize is sometimes used for Brazil. I have seen another sign for Uruguay with the ASL U handshape. I have seen another sign for Dominican Republic with the D and R on forehead and chin. Thank you for sharing all these signs!
This is a wonderful video! Thank you for doing this for all of us. My student noticed that one country was spelled incorrectly. The correct spelling for this country is Namibia and it's not Niambia. He wanted to let you know this. Thank you again!
The sign for Syria represents the flag. However there is a political dimension of whether it is signed with two fingers or three fingers. The government or regime does it with two stars and the opposition uses the older version of the flag that has three stars. So to sign it either way implies some sort of political position.
This. Was. Fascinating. I loved seeing all of the various references: The multiple allusions to flags, and cultural stereotypes. The first sign for Ireland being similar to the sign for “potato”. The sign for Egypt looking like a reference to hieroglyphs. The second sign for Australia looking like a reference to Britain shipping their criminals there. And Morocco is the only one with a reference to the hijab/niqab? Is the sign for Panama a reference to the Panama Canal? So much history and layered meaning! I’d love to know the inspiration for each and every one of these signs. Fascinating!
Super helpful! I’m using this video like flash cards. I’m a certified interpreter but you can get siloed y’know. Great review! & yes, I think the sign for “Hungary” is mislabeled as “Dominican Republic”. Also I DO wish the shirt had a little contrast so it’s easier to see where the hand is against the body. But honestly great, helpful video :)
Thank you! Great video, content, and super helpful as well! Just for a couple heads up. You accidentally misspelled Bangladesh at 0:41. The first sign for Dominican Republic at 2:07 is the correct sign for Dominican Republic. The second ASL sign that you did for Dominican Republic at 4:07 is the sign for the country Hungary. And I don’t know if that is the correct sign for Uruguay in the video at 10:04. And always make sure to do the 1st sign for Germany at 3:08, and not the 2nd sign for Germany at 3:14. The second sign that you did for Germany at 3:14 means an insult from World War II. And always make sure to do the 2nd sign for Africa as in South Africa at 8:40, and not the 1st sign for Africa as in South Africa at 8:36. People from Africa don’t like the 1st sign for Africa at 8:36.
Thanks for this! IT made sense that DR was not at 2:07, due to the alphabetical order, but I didn't think about it being Hungary at all. Also, my understanding is that the second sign for Germany is not in reference to nazis, but to the old way the German military would wear their helmets. Are you saying that Germans associate the sign with the nazis or is a different insult?
Good video. I do agree with some of the comments that the model wearing a black shirt against a black background is not the best. Mainly only the head and hands are seen. Also there is a country name misspelled. The video has the spelling Bandlagesh. The correct spelling is Bangladesh.

So in one motion it is Lower "T" "T" (As if hitting a 1/2 note) then higher "T" (pulsed twice)

Agreed. There's a few signs here that don't match what the Deaf people from that country use, like Bangladesh, PR, I've seen a different sign for Belgium.... This is a great list but for someone like me who works with and socializes with a lot of Deaf people internationally I would love a more in-depth one.
Just started learning ASL - if your name is the same as a country’s, is it okay to use the sign for it when introducing yourself? Or is it more of a contextual thing, and i HAVE to spell out my name in order to sign properly?
I know I’m a year late and you might’ve figured it out but, you need to finger spell your name out. Later on if you want a sign name you can ask a deaf friend to give you a sign name. /gen
EGYPT sign is incorrect according to Deaf Egyptian woman who gave a lecture at Gallaudet. She said that deaf Egyptians prefer sign with B-handshape and place fingertips together like a pyramid then bring them down and apart; repeat once.
Deaf Egyptian woman was correct for HER sign for Egypt. His sign is correct for how American Sign Language produces Egypt. It's VERY common that two cultures differ on how to sign the same country name. If you are not Egyptian yourself, don't live in Egypt, are not visiting Egypt and aren't fluent in ESL then you don't use their sign, you follow your native sign language. He isn't wrong.
Hi, Joseph, and thanks for doing this! One question/request, please...I'd seen a sign for "England" elsewhere but didn't notice it in the video, namely a sign like "to watch" that puts a "baby C" handshape around the chin, like the chinstrap of a Beefeater. If indeed it's not in there, please consider adding it in a future update. Thanks again!
