RIP Robert Vaughn (November 22, 1932 - November 11, 2016), aged 83 And RIP David McCallum (September 19, 1933 - September 25, 2023), aged 90 You both will be remembered as legends.
From Illia to “Ducky” , Class Act all the way. Robert Vaughan , as well. Both had great careers, both will live on through their TV shows and movies. 📻🙂
I had the man from U.N.C.L.E. gun when I was eleven in 1966. The best Christmas present ever. We had the board game too. Too cool. I was in the man from U.N.C.L.E. club too with the badge and the card. That made me the coolest kid I could be. My sister loved Illya. I thought Napolean Solo was the best. I wanted to be him. In 1972 Robert Vaughan came to Porterville California to campaign for McGovern and he gave a speech at the community college. I had to go see him. I remember his shiny black hair. I was about 30 feet away from him, but he looked exactly the same as in the show. Rest In Peace to all the cast that have departed.
Sept. 25th, 2023 David McCallum, Heartthrob Spy of ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,’ Dies at 90 I loved this show. Loved David. Amazing actor. I'm so sad. God speed David! ❤
David McCallum was the first actor to base his appearance on the Mod look. He still looks timeless, five decades after the series had finished. As for Robert Vaughn, the missing between Cary Grant and Jon Hamm. Both actors were utterly unbeatable at the height of their fame. It has been forgotten just how massive this show was in the mid-1960s. Surviving memorabilia from the TV show commands a small fortune now. I wish I still had my vintage U.N.C.L.E annuals now! The early seasons were the best. Shame about the recent film which threw away a great opportunity..
Illya is now Dr. Mallard on NCIS. Unless you were alive when the Man from UNCLE was on TV you would not realize how popular that show was -- and how popular David McCallum was.
I was always rooting for Illya because he was the underdog. Napoleon would be up in the ballroom dancing with the countess and Illya would be digging his way out of the dungeon with a rusty spoon. Utterly loyal but not above puncturing Napoleon's ego when he needed it.
Love those glasses on Illya. They're similar to the ones Ducky Mallard wears. Imagine a crossover where Illya later resigns from UNCLE and studies to be a medical examiner, then changes his name. Mwybe not p, but it was in a dream I had once.
This show and I Spy were my favorites when I was a kid. I´m 46. The show ran in latinamerica during my early teen years. I was fascinated by Ilya Kuryakin. He's name alone was dazzling. It was the only TV show with a russian! That was something awesome to me. Russians were something obscure, the ever present hidden enemy of the americans. To have one on TV was something worth watching and certainly I get a lot of nostalgia watching this clip. Thanks for the upload...in full color!!
I Spy definitely deserves a mention whenever talking about Spy shows. They broke new ground by having Bill Cosby share equal billing with Robert Culp.Despite Mr Cosby's current problems, we can still look back at these early shows and enjoy the repartee between the two stars.
Yeah, the name Illya Kuryakin was one of the few things I remembered about this show, and it's what brought me here today to indulge in a bit of nostalgia.
It was a big deal to have a Russian character playing the hero in an American TV show at he height of the Cold War, and to have the American public totally embrace that character. Quite groundbreaking at the time.
I only started watching NCIS because of David, China white is still a fantastic watch as a series opener, I always looked forward to his wandering reminiscences 🤣🤣🤣 and the references to his visual Ilya K likeness was a grin.
Great stuff. Robert Vaughn and David McCallum were class acts. Back in the 1960s, I would watch this programme on a regular basis, as a small child. I had a lot of memorabilia such as the badges and toys, all long gone sadly. However, for an hour I could pretend to be a very cool super spy. Your observations are spot regarding the working relationships between the two men, which were closer to the excellent "Road" fllms with Hope and Crosby which I also loved. ("The Road To Utopia" remains an outright classic.) The same goes for "I Spy" with Robert Culp and Bill Cosby, before his reputation was permanently destroyed. At the height of its' powers, "The Man From UNCLE" was simply unbeatable. Only "The Avengers" with Patrick MacNee and Diana Rigg came close to matching it.
Thank you for your comments Rob."Man from Uncle " did enjoy great success but it flamed out quickly in the third year. It seemed to switch from a cool persona in it's first year to the comedic slant in the 2nd and 3rd. Probably the fact that it was so popular with younger children may have made the producers try to cartoonize the violence even more. It was fun to watch and never was there any doubt that IIlya and Napoleon were in real danger. You mentioned 3 shows that I like and liked very much, The Avengers , Uncle and I Spy .
Check out the DC graphic novel "Batman 66 Meets The Man From UNCLE". A lovingly crafted tribute to two iconic programmes from that period. You won't be disappointed.
@@tronyfree my favorite Christmas present was man from Uncle gun. I grew up with 3 brothers and they were so jealous I got the gun. I had a crush on Ilya and that's all I asked for. My brothers lists were too long I guess. I still giggle to this day and love Ducky on NCIS.❤️😺
+Linda S Thanks again Linda, for spotting that.Initially it looks a little weird seeing 3 "I"s in a row in front of a name.Unless that first capital "I" has bars on top and bottom. Here's to ILLYA the COOL SPY.
+tronyfree Here's a little background info on how the name was chosen. The correct Russian spelling of Illya's name should be "Ilya," with only one L. But series creator Sam Rolfe chose the name as an homage to Illya, the Greek character in Never on Sunday, and retained the Greek spelling. "Kuryakin" came from the Greek word for Sunday, "Kyriaki."
+Linda S Thanks again Linda. It shows that they put some thought behind Illya's name.Rather strange,it feels like it's Russian but it actually has Greek origins.I did misspell Illya's name in the Napoleon Solo video (2 or 3 times) but I think I'll leave it.It doesn't stick out as much.Unless I get a barrage of people that pick up on it.They'll eventually work their way over to the Illya video and see that it's been corrected there. The series did have some interesting metamorpheses, going from black to color, and from serious to comic.I really liked the chat David and Robert had on the DVD extras, both self effacing, both respectful of each other, and both grateful for what the series did for them. They had good chemistry.
I loved David McCallum when he was Illya, pre teen boy and even got a Illya Kuryakin doll for christmas and Great escape and later as Dr. Mallard "Ducky" RIP pal. you tube is blessing for this . many of my heroes are in the next place: John Denver, Jacque Cousteau Etc Etc.
I was a teeny bopper and just a little too young to "get" a lot of the show -- still, I loved it! How wonderful to have this to enjoy to the max today!
When this TV show started I was in the 8th grade. The girls in my class went crazy for Illya. I always thought Robert Vaughan was cool and saw him as the Man from Uncle whatever he was in going forward.

Napoleon: "really, we're only interested in your tooth", Illya: "and nothing but the tooth!"...The Thor Affair. Great show which ended to quickly, they should have done "The Final Affair".
Not sure why I had such a big crush on David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin when I was 12 years old. Maybe it was his sense of humor, his accent and the 1960s.
I still have a big crush on David. Met him 2x in Atlanta and be was such a gentleman. Cute! Didn't catch all the names, but I noticed that there are a few that aren't quite right. Joycelyn Lane was Lisa Donato in "Re-Collector's" (Season 2), Phyllis Newman was in "Arabian" (Season 2), and Judy Carne was in "Gurnius" (Season 4),
+AiramCarina That was abundantly clear from the series, Napoleon would be the James Bond womanizer and Illya would be the sidekick. As it progressed Illya started to develop this massive following of ...women....who liked his cool demeanor and golden locks ( I think???). The show is in constant reruns everywhere and is available on DVD.The movie wasn't half bad,I liked it.It walked that fine line between bringing in new ideas and linking to the TV show.In the last season it got a little silly with the parody, even though David McCallum and Robert Vaughn had a great chemistry and did the best they could with the material.
The appealing thing about Illya for me is that he wasn't a womanizer. He had those great looks that attracted women, but he never played into it. He had a cool, remoteness that made him even more attractive.
Napoleon was suave and Illya was cool. Napoleon was flirty and easy and Illya was mysterious and crude toward women. It's not hard to see why a lot of people preferred Illya. But Robert Vaughn wasn't less of a lady-killer just because of that. They were both incredibly attractive men at their prime.
The series rode the James Bond craze for three years before it was cancelled. My feeling is that the writers managed to split the James Bond persona into two people, IIllya and Napoleon, and that way probably attracted more viewers .
Had the greatest crush on this guy back in the "M.F.Uncle" days in the 60's. Imagine my surprise that this thoughtful, talented and seemingly a lovely person as described by others who knew him and worked with him was a staunch republican and an ardent Trump supporter who was jubilant when Trump won. Head scratching, and a disappointment, I must say. Still, looking back at these clips, one can but dream on.... Kuryakin will at least live on in the memory.
Hi Walt, it did very much so. You can see David McCallum shake the prop bomb as he slides off to jump. The show did veer into high camp towards the 3rd season.Maybe to deter from the fact that people were being shot at and dying. It was trying to straddle the huge following of it's young fan base and be more family oriented to it's violent roots in the spy genre. They probably shot themselves in the foot by doing that and their run ended after 3 seasons. Thanks for viewing.
The movie SUCKED the Big One and you no one really wants to know what both David and Robert really think about the movie as it cannot be repeated in polite company.
To the poster of this video: In the scene beginning at 3:30 and running to 3:39, right after Illya says "will not work", Someone in the room says, "wrong answer Mr. Kuriyakin!" This has got to be my favorite line, and I have used it throughout my life when I know someone is fudging the truth. Do you happen to have the rest of that video? Also, in the next scene, as I recall, they release Illya with his hands tied behind him, having painted a red bullseye on his back. Then they hunt him for sport.
You are absolutely right. Iillya was asked a question by the bad guy, "Did you get that new bow from Uncle.?" ,and IIllya replys "Uncle, what's that.?", and the bad guy says, "Wrong answer my friend, any other man would have said 'who is that' !" and he pulls a gun out. Then he's hunted with the bulls eye on his back. The scene in the video has IIllya trying to pass himself off as an engineer in order to get the bad guys, but that's later on in the episode, I don't think he fooled anybody. It's all in the Second season, episode 11, The Virtue Affair, of the Man From Uncle.Probably available for borrowing at your local library. The Man from Uncle series eventually became too flippant and casual to keep viewers coming back, but some scenes taken individually ,were brilliantly funny.

They used to have one of the guns on display in a WW2 museum in Normandy - they thought it was a rare P38 version!
I had the Man from U.N.C.L.E.lunchbox, but my taste in weaponry tended toward the Agent Zero M line. I wore those things out.
Illya Kuryakin was my first crush. I have few memories of my childhood but The Man from UNCLE is in there.
Rest in God's Love, Mr. David McCallum. You will sorely be missed!
I was a pre-teen when this show was on in the 60s. I watched it every week and had a crush on David's character.
3 cheers for David HIP HIP HIP hooray🥲
Rest in peace David McCallum

The world was falling apart in the sixties -- still is -- but UNCLE was a blast.

In the 90’s BBC 2 showed this and I used to watch it with my Dad. My Dad would reminisce about the 60’s and I would enjoy the stories.
I agree, the opening music was astounding, and Illya was so handsome. McCullum will always be Illya for me. Rip David McCallum/Illya

This has got to be my favorite line, and I have used it throughout my life when I know someone is fudging the truth.
I loved David McCaluum and he just passed away at 90. My first crush!!
