- David McCallum, the British actor who became a star by playing a secret agent in 1960s spy drama The Man From U.N.C.L.E., has died at the age of 90.
More recently, McCallum was known for his long-running role as a medical examiner on hit CBS programme NCIS.
"We will miss his warmth and endearing sense of humour that lit up any room or soundstage he stepped onto," the NCIS account said on social media.
The Scottish-born actor also starred in TV shows Colditz and Sapphire & Steel.
"David was a gifted actor and author, and beloved by many around the world," the NCIS tribute said.
"He led an incredible life, and his legacy will forever live on through his family and the countless hours on film and television that will never go away."
He died yesterday in the USA of natural causes. His birthday was just six days earlier on the 19th September 2023, where he turned 90. He can be found in NCIS episodes in 2023, so was still working up to this time.

It just hurts I’ve known David for over 50 years and am still friends with his kids because I grew up with them and the whole family are super nice

I loved warching David McCallum in "Man From U.N.C.L.E" and the movie "The Great Escape". He certainly was a fine looking man and his diction was ALWAYS spot on! RIP dear man.

It's going to be interesting to see how NCIS does the tribute to him. His parts in the show were #1 of the major parts of the show. I have been a BIG fan of the show almost from day #1. And his appearances were part of that.
My absolutely favorite scene was from NCIS was when the terrorist kidnapped Ducky and his assistant and freed the assistant and told him to use Ducky's car. The scene was so painful to watch even for a non driver. As the assistant just grinded the gears so badly on this beautiful classic car . The terrorist actually to him to get out of the car . The scene is just so classic.
He'll be so very missed. A very talanted man. I loved him in NCIS.

I was only watching Sapphire and Steel last week, thinking about how brilliant he was still with us.Another great Series he was in I haven't heard mentioned was The Invisible Man.A wonderful actor who will be sadly missed.
Yeah, Sapphire and Steel was like a precursor for the X-files.
I thought it was odd no one mentioned that one. It stuck in my memory for some reason.
I remember him in The Invisible Man when I was a boy, but I loved him in Sapphire and Steel, one of my favourite shows. I was watching it a few weeks ago. It was a cracking series, wasn't it?

Thinking about it now I still get goose bumps: It is an NCIS episode around 2005. Ducky has been threatened by a vengeful/domineering/grieving mother of serial killer who has died in prison. So the team needs to protect him and his mother (played by late Nina Foch) at their home. Outside the home NCIS agent Kate Todd asks Gibbs what did Ducky like when he was young. Gibbs thinks for a second and says Illya Kuryakin.
What about A Night To Remember? He might had a small part. But the black & white film about the Titanic was part of my childhood.

From UNCLE to NCIS wonderful and dependably brilliant. Every fan has a favorite. Mine is his "Kidnapped". Always Illya and Ducky but his Allen Breck Stuart will stir you Scots even if you aren't one. Thank you for everything.
He was great in Kidnapped! It's a bit sad that most of the tributes only focus on The Man from Uncle and NCIS - both wonderful shows but he did so much more. One of my favourites is Sapphire and Steel. And I think his work on Colditz was excellent. You really said it best with "dependably brilliant".
David was a fine actor who bought dignity and wisdom to all his major roles. No wonder he had so much work in successful TV and movie productions. He was a natural. Made it all look effortless.
David McCallum had a long, full, well-lived life. However, it still saddens me, because I was a fan for decades and will miss him on my screen. Thankfully, his acting legacy lives on.
May he rest in peace. He will be missed.

To me he is most remembered as Ducky on NCIS, but that is my opinion and I am not saying that he will not be remembered for his role in the man from uncle, because he will. Regardless he was an excellent actor and I will miss him.

Yeah. It was one of those old school shows where everything resolved within the 50 minute run time each episode. Sustained mainly on David McCallum's charisma. Not a bad series and looking at the IMDB another one for the CV of Steve Bocho (Hill Street Blues and others)@@timengineman2nd714

I barely remember watching Man From UNCLE as a kid in the 1960s, but it was enough to never forget David McCallum. I was not a fan of the pretentious, formulaic NCIS with grumpy, weird Mark Harmon. David McCallum and Pauley Perrette were the real stars of that show and without them wasn’t much there.

Yes, born in Glasgow, moved to London but annoyingly the announcer failed to to say he then moved back to Glasgow during the war to live with relatives ( that’s the BBC for you). Then the rest is history… 🏴

I'm mid 50s. My mum used to watch Sapphire & Steel, then I fell in love with it when I was in my 20s. I was watching it a few weeks back. What a team: Lumley amd McCallum!

I had the honor of being Mr. McCallum's stand-in for a movie project - such a fine, gracious person, in addition to being a brilliant actor. He talent and kindness are missed.
Brilliant actor and did an excellent job in Colditz, which i was only watching again last month on my box set, for the second time because i loved watching him in this.

David McCallum appeared in a memorable and classic episode of 'The Outer Limits' called "The 6th finger". In that episode, he experienced accelerated evolution and the actor improvised a wonderful scene playing the piano, a legacy from his musical parents. Truly a great actor and Renaissance Man.

I remember running from school to my granny's to watch David McCallum wonderful performance as Alan Breck Stewart in Kidnapped. A Scottish actor playing a Scottish hero in a Scottish story. He poured a Scottish prejudice into my veins which will boil along there till the flood gates of life shut in eternal rest.

Sorry don't know what happened. He was commissioned into the 3rd Battalion of the Gold Coat Regiment ,part of the Royal West African Frontier Force stationed in Accra, Ghana in 1951. He became an expert in small arms and explosives.
