Secret Agent aka Danger Man ,wow , I have'nt seen this since childhood . Thanks for posting . I hope to find more episodes . ❤
If you combine this series with its sequal "The Prisoner" series, you have one of the most interesting story lines in TV history. I was just old enough and precocious enough to appreciate the final seasons of "Secret Agent Man" and I was fascinated by "The Prisoner", still one of the most original series ever done and relevant today. Thanks for letting me see the early story of John Drake.
Still at a loss to understand how ol' "Rover" could track those those wayward prisoners.
I.recall the Dassault Aleoette 'copter and the Citroën Mehari jitney, but DRAKE had upgraded from his Mini-Cooper to that small roadster. Any idea what that was?
@@nealbradleigh5069 Aston Martin, if you mean the car at 17:29.
@@nealbradleigh5069 The roadster The Prisoner (John Drake) drives at the beginning of The Prisoner as he resigns is a Lotus 7.
Loved this when I was a kid in the Sixties!
What a great show this was.....Patrick was perfect for that role 👍
And yes, Number Two calls Number Six "Drake" in, I think it was Fallout, the second to last episode of The Prisoner. McGoohan has denied that Number Six was John Drake, but that was probably because he did not have the rights to the character.
Often misheard, misquoted. No.2 says “report to me in the morning break”, NOT “morning, Drake”.
Love that Aston Martin DB Mark III at 17:30. Drake sure has excellent taste in cars.
Patrick McGoohan will always be remembered for playing Number 6 and John Drake.
what is number 6 as mentioned?

@@Tmanaz480 Thanks
@@ethimself5064 Have you checked out The Prisoner yet? One of my old favorites!
As far as McGoohan was concerned, the character John Drake became the character No.6.
I was 8 years old when this came out, developed a huge crush on Patrick that never went away. Found out beside his charisma he was also a wonderful man. thank you for uploading.
Thanks, Alannah; my experience exactly, except that I was 12, growing up in Florida, and seeing it called "Secret Agent". For years I treasured a little newspaper photo of Patrick Mcgoohan. I admired him for his brains and daring, as much as for his good looks; and appreciated his sensibility in focusing on his work, instead of chasing after the ubiquitous Barbie dolls he encountered in the line of duty.
Anyone notice that the village he visits about 18 minutes into the show is the same village from The Prisoner?
yes.filmed in the uk....
Portmerion, North Wales.
“I’ve been here before”
Supposedly, many visitors to Portmerion in Wales since the late 1960's have vacationed there because of "The Prisoner".

Oh oh, you did it now. Here comes the giant bubble!
The ripe program must BE STOPPED!!!
"...Giving you a number and takin' WAY your name...",...then the first really cool guitar riff I'd ever heard until then.,...but then I hadn't heard of Link Wray yet either. :-)
A brilliant start to a brilliant series (known as Dangerman here in Australia). If this was repeated on free to air TV these days they'd need to cut it down to around 15 minutes to allow for the ads.
Man! I loved this show as a kid. The other one that I really loved was "The CAT" with Robert Loggia. That was so hip and jazzy too.
Thomas Hewitt Edward Cat. I loved that show, too

I love Patrick McGoohan most for his work with Peter Falk in "Columbo." He was one of the few people with whom Falk worked both during the original series' run and the revival movies.
Be seeing you!
John Drake has the moves. I’ve read that Patrick would choreograph the fights. ❤️
When actors know their craft they can make a fist fight look very real . One cue missed , one punch not pulled correctly and injury could happen . To pull off a fight scene without looking phony takes great skill and very good director/choreographer . I am impressed . People who have been around as long as I have and grew up watching these shows know exactly what I'am saying . 😊
John Drake is always grinning like a Cat that just caught a Bird! (perhaps it is because he gets free drinks everywhere!) 🙂

Starring in Columbo was his best work
Superfreaky coincidence at 26:06?
In the credits: Locations with the kind co-operation of Mr. Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion.
Portmeirion is the location of the exterior shots for The Prisoner.
The Johnny Rivers theme song for the American re-tooling was one of the best rock genre theme songs ever.
They wanted him as the first James bond
This is who Johnny River’s song is about. “Secret Agent Man”. Patrick McGoohan.
One of the best shows of the 1960s.
I've always wanted to see this show and now I get to! Cool!
My name is Drake... John Drake.... He obviously went to the same spy school as James B.
As this was before JB it is considered to be where it came from
Sorry, but the books came first.
Did anyone happen to notice that Drake drives through part of Portmeirion, which will eventually be the location used for The Village in "The Prisoner"? Location also in end credits.
Isn't the painting of Portmerion where the prisonner was filmed?
Yup
Yes; it also 'portrayed' Renaissance Italy in "The Masque of Mandragora", a Doctor Who story from the 1970s. Very distinctive.
Looks like he's driving an early sport model Aston? Not bad series; good acting, nice location shots. Thanks for the upload project.

Not sure why but that bell chimed 37 times.
In the scene with the artist in the restaurant that starts at about 11:45, I thought Drake would ask him to sketch the woman's portrait from memory.
I think he missed a great opportunity there!

Watch Danger Man and enjoy it so much and like the Avengers and the Champions, Fantastic secret agent shows can stand proudly next to the American spy shows. Drake at times comes across better then Bond.
Next stop the village..😊
John Drake is the Prisoner
Clearly this was the prelude to that brilliant series, my favorite of all time.
I always thought John Drake WAS The Prisoner. What is more, I sort of think the the plot of Ice Station Zebra was the reason he resigned. Any thoughts anyone?
But Drake has an American accent here, Unlike Number 6. 🤔
@@TheSideband Ice Station Zebra was written by Alistair McClean who also wrote The Guns of Navarone and Where Eagles Dare. I don't think there's any relation whatsoever between ISZ and Drake/The Prisoner.

It’s the BBC
As a kid, I watched all these early British series, including Dangerman. I still enjoy them, although I cringe listening to the actors playing foreigners - their appalling accents - and grin at the fake scenery flashing past the car windows. Ah, they were such innocent days, where one could just accept the programs without questioning their authenticity
This episode really emphasizes how tall McGoohan was. He towers over people, even the goon at the end. IMHO he would have been good in some ways as James Bond, but he did not have the sense of humor they wanted in those days. Very grim actor. Good, but grim.
Mmmm, not so grim. It was the roles he was cast in. There are subtle flashes of humor in various shows.
I hope he doesn't resign. He could get into trouble if he does.

I was a kid when this show was on TV. The main reason these shows were any good was because of Patrick Mcoohan's acting.

Patrick who?????????????
kirk mullings He also directed + maybe wrote it.
Mr. Kirk: I'm the same way. For some reason my local PBS station was running Brit shows like this and I was hooked. This however has too many blips, to really get the real gist of the story..
Mcgoohan would have made a fine James Bond.
A great actor starting a great, pre-Bond series. (And you can hear that hint or Irish brogue too!)
I watch Patrick McGoohan in Secret Agent Man in the 1960s always remember the opening song by Johnny Rivers.
Johnny River's Secret Agent Man was the opening theme for the American version only. Everywhere else used the British intro.

No. 6, in the Village, driving an Aston Martin...who could have seen THAT coming back when this was made??
Aston Martin DB Mark III which is the convertible version of the same model James Bond used in the 1958 Goldfinger Novel that had the installed spy gadgets. Must have been a standard for spy cars.
I think it the highest irony that the very first episode features PORTMERION considering that was where THE PRISONER was shot!
A very fast paced episode.
Drake drives an Aston.
I could never understand why dear old dad always thought they were more comedy to him. Later in life dear old dad and mom sat me down and told me what did in real life. And mom was no slacker, on and off through the years as needed. Between training and leading special native gurilla units and being a case officer (master spy), dear old dad and mom were, . . . think of Jason Bourne, married, with children. It's a life I would never want for my children but it was a life perfect for me.
This program is both an agony and an ecstasy for me as it was my Father's favourite TV program. My Dad died in 1967 and this is a fond memory. Thanks.
Not a good score. The "dead father" story is over used. Try something else next time.

Very good job of making Drake totally distinct from James Bond.
Patrick is the definition of cool.
I first watched The Prisoner growing up in the 90's and now i'm watching Secret Agent for the first time!
I watched The Prisoner in the 60s and am so pleased to find Secret Agent. Thank goodness for the Internet.
I love Patrick McGoohan R.I.P. Everything he does is quick and deliberate, speech, movement, facial expressions, and he does if all with a great voice and most of the time with that slightly hunched head tilt and piercing stare. Three of my favorite movies are that much better because of him. Braveheart, Silver Streak, and of course,...Scanners! If James Bond was not only a spy but a Private detective he would have been the best choice. What a great guy, didn’t accept the role because he wouldn’t kiss another woman. Who would want to if married to Joan Drummond, very attractive even in to her golden years! Damn I wish he didn’t turn down so many roles.
Great insight on actor. I will read up more on him. We on this side of the big pond were introduced to McGoohan through his roles in DISNEY movies (THE NINE LIVES OF TOMASINA. and ALIAS DR SYN).
When ITV syndicated DANGER MAN we got the SECRET AGENT trimming repackage. From there more movies such as ICE STATION ZEBRA and lots of TV roles.
Before this, I have only seen him in a few Columbo episodes.
An English William Shatner, ( but much better).
Before The Prisoner, there was Danger Man (or Secret Agent).
Why did you Resign?
I never caught on to that show. The Saint is my all-time favourite British show.
Clearly the precursor.

wow does Patrick outshine this show, the other actors and the scripts.
Patrick McGoohan was offered the role of James Bond three times. He turned it down because he didn't like Bond's morality.
From what I've read, Patrick was a devout Catholic so mabey that has something to do with it.
19:45 I half-expected to see a giant floating Rover in the background.
I used to watch this show as "Secret Agent Man." It was a good show and had the best theme song by Johnny Rivers. I became a fan of both Patrick Mcgoohan and Johnny Rivers. 😊👍
Boy, he sure was handsome in his white fedora in the sports car. Such a smooth character - nothing gets past him.
One second after Drake appears, and I'm grinning from ear to ear.
17:22 Patrick McGoohan drives to The Village at Portmeirion in North Wales where he filmed The Prisoner TV series.
I loved that Aston Martin he was driving

Danger Man & Secret Agent came here in the mid-60s and Prisoner in '67, I think.
I bought it a couple years ago there are 86 Episodes 18 DVD First Danger Man 47 Episodes, and Secret Agent 39 Episodes with two Color Episodes bring the total of 57 hours of Fun.
Agreed

Apparently, when the series was 1st commissioned, the TV network wanted a cheap clone of Bond (which was very popular at the time). When the scripts were given to Mcgoohan, he thought the main character was immoral (guns & girls). He suggested changing the Drake character to rely upon his brains & cunning. A man of principal.
These early episodes of danger man were shot two years before the first James Bond. So are you sure of what you wrote? (Danger man 1960, Dr No 1962)
Darryl Ruiz James Bond even took the classic line "My name is Bond, James Bond" from this series, you can hear Patrick say "my name is Drake, John Drake" in the first minutes of this episode.
@@jean-pierrethibaudeau7201 The first James Bond novel Casino Royale was published in 1953. However, TheSideband does appear to be referring to the films.
Yes, I read that, too.
@@YorkyOne Oddly, American actor Barry Nelson had played "Jimmy" Bond somewhere around that time.
"My name is Drake, John Drake." So many things in this series where copied to the James Bond movies. I watched this series when I was about 10 or 12 and where mesmerised by it. Watching it now I think it was really good. It was well made and the director did a fine job as well as the musical director. He also did the music for the Simon Templar series. The camera angles and the dramatic music is top notch and todays tv series are not at all that good. I'm gonna search for The man from UNCLE and see if that also is as good as I remember it to be.
Do you mean "copied FROM"? Or do you mean that the Bond films copied Danger Man/Secret Agent? So much hangs on a preposition!
No, he meant “to”.
Danger Man was first broadcasted in 1960, two years before Dr.No was released. I would say for the most part, Danger Man did not try and emulate Bond.
Except, of course, John Drake was not a ladies' man. In fact, he seemed often to avoid the opportunity when it came up!
@@jazzmanchgo The other difference between Drake and Bond is, especially second series, Drake often worked with a team.
I saw Secret Agent when it was first shown and recently from library dvds. It was as excellent as I recalled. One of the best series.

I am bingeing this whole series right now. It's excellent. It's adult. Not designed for kiddies. I also love the jazzy sound tracks.
Interesting to see Clough Williams-Ellis mentioned in the credits. (He was the architect of Portmerion)
I thought that was Portmerion standing in as Italy.
Interesting to notice that John Schlesinger was a 2nd unit Director on this episode.. the only way is up I guess!!

I thought all these episodes were destroyed accidentally in some bureaucratic cock-up by ITV. This is fantastic. McGoohan was a genius.
Ha! Then 5 mil in gold weighed a ton? Now it's 275 lbs.
What is a lbs? The world is metric now, mr Trunp Brexit.
@@neilwilson5785 124.7 k
Took me a minute to run through the numbers, but you’re right. Around August 1974 the nominal value of gold was $156; Today’s 1974 value is $793.31/oz. The 2019 rate of gold is $1513.91/oz, so a ton of gold would be worth $48MM, and $5MM would be worth 206 lbs. Side note- it is pretty crazy the gold spike from 1970-1980; going from $239.47/oz-$2161.63/oz !! (Nominal $36.56/oz-$674.84/oz). I wouldn’t say gold is the best investment.
And this gave Mcgoohan the location for the Prisoner. Colony Three (1964) provided an outline for The Prisoner.

Funny how all Italians in this show speak English, Drake never tells who he represents, and like most shows, there's never any guns that smoke after being fired.
I never watched "Danger Man" in the early-mid '60s, because I was working nights at Champion when was in college, but did watch every episode of "Secret Agent" and "The Avengers" (original) and "The Champions." McGoohan, Rigg, and MacNee were the best.

You can see how the show strained some with the half-hour running time. My favorite scene, purely for comical reasons, is when he visits the suspects and has his drink. The conversation is ridiculously rushed, like the flower scene from The Room. When they brought the program back with an hour-long run time, it really came into its own. Like Mission Impossible, it had more time to develop its sophisticated storylines and characters. Amazing show!

so this is where he found out about Portmeirion then !
Yes! He filed it away in his mind and when he was coming up with the concept for The Prisoner, he was able to utilize it. He also was influenced regarding The Prisoner’s concept when they wouldn’t let him out of his contract as Secret Agent was so successful. As a result, he compromised with them and came up with the Prisoner, in essence mimicking his real life situation of not being actually able to resign. While Number Six was never actually named, everyone assumed that he was John Drake which McGoohan publicly denied … but …come on!
Interesting. Screen play by Brian Clemens. Brian would go on to help create The Avengers, The New Avengers, and CI 5 The Professionals. And of course he wrote Highlander II. So, um, we can forgive him for that one.
