I have to say, as much as I enjoy ALL of Adorama's educational videos, yours remain my favorite. Even if I learn nothing new in one, they are always enjoyable to watch.
1) The picture you chose for postprocessing was very good because the framing was great. 2) Also, it had a tram to the left and a crosswalk to the right. Two things a cyclist has to be aware of. 3) If there is too much distracting color in the image I try b/w first. 4) I get the best panning result when using the hip. Of the joints relevant for moving the camera the hip is the largest and the joint I (at least) have the best control over. 5) If you don´t like the blue sign, go out again, shoot another post without a sign and paste it over the sign. 6) If you don´t like the background, go out again, shoot a different background and photoshop the cyclist on it. If you shoot cyclist and background separately anyway, then you can use a higher shutter speed for the cyclist. The post-processing challenge is to maintain the verisimilitude.
Hi Gavin, I've learned many things from your great tutorials, your presentations are clear, well paced and extremely informative. I love how you engage with your audience in such an enthusiastic and friendly way, so much so that I always view each episode right to the end, unlike some UA-cam presenters that either waffle on or don't prepare their tutorials in any structured way :( Thank you for such great tutorials.......I'm now a definite subscriber to you and look forward to more comprehensive photo tips from you ;)
Great timing Gavin, I'm off to Oulton Park race circuit tomorrow to shoot bikes (a little faster) but you video couldn't have come on at a better time, Thankyou, Billy
Great! thanks for this!! the only place where I think there are more bikes than people! Boy I love Europe it's been a while since I have been to Amsterdam- I had an Amsterdamn good time too!
Hi Mr Gavin, It's march 2023 & I just purchased Canon 60d. I've just realized That this old camera is capable of taking awesome photos if combined with expensive lens😂
Great video - learned a lot. That said, I guess I'm the only one who much prefers the original photo with the touches of yellow, red, and blue in the background.
One thing you forgot to mention is that when shooting with this setting you cannot shoot in bright Sunny day without an ND filter because your shutter will be way too slow for and your ISO and aperture to keep up with your exposure.
What's best about the panning shot is you don't need a low aperture i.e expensive lens to do it. It's all about the timing of the shot. Dialing in that shutter speed to suit. You will take 100's of shot's to get a couple of bangers!
Hello, I love your video and the amazing photos, I own a Nikon D3100 and I have a 50mm 1:1.8 G lens and was wondering if can get this shots with my setup? If there is any way that you can please let me know. Thank you for your time.
So AI Servo is the way to go when it comes to panning photography? Interesting. I should get better panning photos now. Will let you know the outcome. Thanks
Since you are being paid by adorama these photos are commercial. How do you catch up with the cyclists to get model releases? Or do you stage these shots and get the release ahead of time?
I have a question on this one. How did you get model releases for all of those people on the bikes? Even if Adorama purposely demonetized the video, it's still a video for a commercial company and would need model releases for everyone you purposely used for photos.
One of the very few photography teachers on UA-cam who also takes (and makes!) beautiful pictures himself. Always an inspiration.
New on AdoramaTV!
Panning in Amsterdam: Gavin Hoey shows you how to get started with panning for moving subjects.

Respect for staying true to your shot picture and not adding blur in post but only adjusting chromatics.
Everyone learn at a different rate and I appreciate your technique. Very simplex and fundamentally sound imo. Thank you.
