My male roommate eats his sugary cereal out of a huge bowl, holds his spoon like a shovel, and makes a loud slurping sound with each bite - all while he sits on the couch watching TV! Myself...I sit at the table proper eating my fresh fruit and Greek yogurt (or whatnot), trying desperately to block him out of my vision of sight and sound. Usually however, I get disgusted, lose my appetite, and just walk away. (Ugh, I need to "level up".)
Because someone came up with so many rules as to what's etiquette and what's elegant is probably the main reason why I prefer Hotels with self-service breakfast. That way I pick my stuff, go to my corner and eat my way without having to follow 'cold before hot' and other irrelevant stuff!
By the way, what's more elegant: go to the bathroom before or after having breakfast and which hand should you use to pick up food after going to the bathroom? I bet you don't know that etiquette...
As someone that has worked in catering, I appreciate your suggestion of holding the door open, dressing proberly and being nice to the staff. People tend to be very rude and entitled when being served and think that they don't have to be nice simply because they're paying to be served. This good advice for people of all layers of society btw.

I sell insurancefor nearly 20 years now, but I was a server for a number of years, as were my kids. One of the world's hardest jobs! Anyone who says differently has never done it. Appreciate, and respect those people, people! 💖💜💖💜💞💚💜💖😊🥂

@@chigurl4667 I quit catering 1,5 years ago thank god. I hated the pressure and the low wage and I'm happy I left cause I have a good paying job that allows me to work from home now.
I used to work at a 4 star hotel and assist room service at times. I'm so happy to hear there are people who practice the etiquette you teach because NO ONE ever held the door open for me. Those carts are really heavy and depending on what you ordered, its easy for items to topple over so you must be careful. I hated delivering food because it was stressful at times! I also hated walking into rooms with a man in boxers and his naked girlfriend in bed. Please don't be those people.

I was taught all of these things by my non-affluent mother. I thought these things were common sense.

Goodness yes! I was a nice hotel and my breakfast was ruined by the children being rowdy. I have two small children so I can say control your children! Teach them how to properly behave in public!

I would also add: give a small tip to room service personnel, especially if you are staying in five star hotel :)
In a lot of states this is the law.a lot of people are unaware.this is to prevent from food already on plate from going into buffet

Se A Very considerate to think of the staff. A clean plate takes two staff. One dish washer that uses a large industrial dishwasher and the dish setup staff who prepare the buffet tables or room service tray.
Thank you for mentioning manners and being polite to the people serving you. I have broken up with people because of their rudeness to waiters, waitress, room service or valets.
I was always taught to look at how a guy treats: servers, his mama and his family , that's how he'll treat you. If he is rude and nasty to them he'll be rude and nasty to you .

Regarding the awkward moment while waiting for your food, i much prefer having small talk with the server and focusing on their presence. Signing the bill helps them get the job done faster and i'm sure they appreciate it. I often say oh that looks amazing, thank you so much with encouraging words like, this is perfect etc.. and I might comment on how much i'm enjoying the hotel. I think they like that their workplace is appreciated because they are part of the larger team. I don't think you should worry too much about giving away your power, but being nice is always classy and the person will always remember you in a good light, and this is what you want. In my experience when you are nice to the staff, they tell each other and by the end of your stay, you will get many more smiles and a little more effort to make your stay comfortable.

Exactly my experience! The "servers" are PEOPLE who got up in the morning dealt with whatever they have to in their personal life to get to work (like children, transportation, etc), to help US have a good experience in this place. I always treat people as PEOPLE. To me, anything else is rude and lacks class. And yes, The staff appreciates it and word spreads. I end up getting all sorts of wonderful genuinely nice treatment, little extras. Although not why I do it!

During the “awkward silence” stage, I like to ask “How is your morning going?” Or “It looks to be a lovely day today” to fill in the space between the bill and the “goodbye Thank You” if need be.
Just turn on the TV before the room service attendant arrives to avoid any awkward silence inside the room if you're the type of person who doesn't like small talk.

I’m the daughter of an ambassador, so I get to travel a lot and I’ve met other diplomat’s children who behave like straight up animals (and it baffles me how many of these things aren’t actually common sense.) I think many people should take a look at you channel-regardless of their social status cause god knows they need it lol

Shar Roon Eating food whilst on line, multiple dipping of food on sauces such as ketchup and marmalade, screaming to the person across the room, laughing obnoxiously loud, piling food on their plates, going for seconds and thirds with their dirty plate, and even taking food from the waiter (when the help person/waiter takes the dirty plates and cleans up the table in order to make room for more), amongst others

When I was in Turkey, in a 5* hotel with all inclusive, I felt so sorry for the service there. Those people would stretch themselves whilst serving and often many won‘t even say „thank you“ They appreciate when you are nice to them and tip them. My father always said „never forget the ‚regular man‘ „ meaning that we should make sure not to be cheap and stingy with people and treat them always nicely. I hate when people say bad stuff about cleaners, etc

So right. We never forget the waiters or cleaners. And if we've had a spectacular meal, we speak to the chef telling him so. These all inclusive 5* places, or even high end hotels, are treated shabily by rude people, who think they are owed..... grrr

IT is NEVER too late to learn and practice good manners! I am mrrrffll years over mmrrfflll and still learn and relearn the manners my parents taught by watching these videos. As you improve your life, you wil attract a better group of people, who teach and practice more good manners and the cycle continues. You have to determine at what level you wish to live... I am so glad ANA does these videos, she is having a profound influence over a great number of people who wish to improve their lives.

I did appreciate how you mentioned to be polite to your servers; very important. My mother summed it up as "pretty is as pretty does". Kindness should always be in fashion.

I eat the hot foods first, I don’t want them cooled down. The yogurt can wait.
This makes most sense to me. I always considered sausages, eggs, hash brown to be safest to eat while still hot. Cold food stays cold unless you're in the hot desert, so I eat the fruits like the cantaloupe, honeydew and pineapple, oranges last as a desert or palate cleanser.

You can serve yourself of the cold things, eat them, and then get the hot foods later. I believe most hot dishes are also the ones that have most fat and unhealthy ingredients, so if you eat the cold foods before, you also end up eating less of the unhealthy (but delicious) dishes. It’s a win-win situation!
That was my thought exactly. I didn’t know the etiquette around it said otherwise.
But someone later commented because it’s a buffet and you can go a few times (even Ana said twice) I guess next time I’ll try getting my warm/hot food later.

@@isabelamartins6909 Correct. I start with a small serving of some tropical fruit (if in a tropical location) and a spoon or two of yoghurt to top it, maybe a sprinkle of granola. If I still wish for more, then it's a poached egg on a piece of toast if they have a nice type of bread, perhaps with a tomato, a serving of avocado o a serving of a vegetable with it. Generally, that's more than enough for me. These days I'm actually intermittent fasting anyway, so it's not so much of a concern.
I just loved what you said Anna 💕💕💕 I work in a wealthy management family office and sometimes I see that people mistreated people as a maid, courier service man, and waitress. I get so sad because they work are extremely difficult and sometimes they come from far places to serve us. Thank you for your words. I always thought that people well educated never underestimate others work.

Yes, that is quite important.
US is a tip country. If you are over seas tipping is considered rude. (They pay their staff better and it is expected that the staff are doing their job well. So tipping implies you expect poor service)

@@moperson1 please remember that it all depends on the country you're travelling to. I'm Polish and no one here would consider you rude because you want to tip the staff, it's just a sign that you appreciate somebody's work. But as I said - it all depends on the country.
@@SandraMichalska i'm also Polish, but I normaly dine in Germany, France and Swiss and tipping is never considered rude. It's not necessary but highly appreciated.
Anna, I've started watching your videos and I think you're teaching really important things to people - nobody learns about etiquette or how to behave any more. You're doing a really valuable public service - and it doesn't just apply to affluent people either! Regular folks can use this info too. Etiquette is ultimately about how we treat others and showing kindness and respect.
I’m a room service person. Glad that I adhere to your guidelines without having heard them before! Coffee. Coffee first. It’s the base of my food pyramid. I usually have something light in the morning- yogurt with some healthy muesli, if available. Or, egg whites with sliced tomatoes. And coffee. Thanks for this video and you have a calming presence.
My 90 yr old mother was all about etiquette and I am thankful for it! Such as when you eat a croissant or roll, break it into a smaller piece before spreading jam or butter. Place a small amount of jam or butter on your plate and then spread it from your small plate onto the roll. Never take it directly from the serving bowl/plate. Maybe you have covered this in other videos?

She wasnt detailed about the etiquette.....examples : use fork to pick up a small piece of food just on the tip of the tines and dont insert all tines into the mouth, but just take small amountsvof food off the very tip of the fork.....thats my favorite......and like someone here said, break the croissants into bite sized pieces and spread jelly on only one piece at a time per bite... .etc etc

I've watched quite a few of your videos now and one thing always sticks out to me - that although you are upper class and really a very elegant woman, you don't perpetrate the stereotype of being snooty and "holier than thou". Instead, you teach us to be kind, respectful and conscientious of others. To me that is the mark of a true elegant lady, to be somebody who is graceful in all aspects of life. I have a lot of respect for you Anna, thank you again for the videos :)
I LOVE hotel breakfasts with a passion! If I'm sleeping, all someone has to do to get me up is whisper "breakfast finishes in 10 minutes" and I'll be flying out of bed, dressing and getting downstairs at the speed of light. I always have juice, small portion of granola, streaky bacon, grilled tomato and a hash brown followed by fruit and coffee.
If I'm in France then just a coffee and a mini baguette with fruit compote. In Spain a coffee and pan de tomate. Delicious!
I’m the same way. I looove hotel breakfast. I wake up just for them. My husband...not so much. So there goes my elegance when I have to carry a plate of assorted foods from the buffet to the room for him 😂

Nanny Needs Coffee I set various alarms. For example if I want to wake up an 5 am I set up an alarm at 4:30 - 4:45 then at 5. I sit on my roof I have a nice view. Then I just sit there with my tea and watch the sunrise. Soak that energy and continue with my busy day. It’s important to have a moment.

It is always best to be considerate to the people serving me. It does make me feel good. Since, I have gained a bit during this time of the pandemic, my breakfast now consist of a fruit and two slices of bread with no filling of any sort.

This was such an important video. I just had an conversation the other day, on how so many people lack on etiquette. Especially when it comes to dining. Stuffing whole fruits in their mouth. They way their posture is while sitting at the table. Behavior. Back then when my daughter was 3 she already knew how to properly eat with fork & knife and having a napkin on her lap... and she enjoyed being a little princess. Maybe it’s just because I grew up myself like that. But I think there should be classes on manners and etiquette (at least the basic) in school. Thanks that was a good video 🌷

We have learned all these things at home from my mother, and you have to sort your food and not mix everything in one plate, but we tend to eat the warm food first because we do not want to put it away. all the way from Kuwait 🇰🇼
I grew up learning all these basic rules, thank God! But some friends tell me I act "Like a princess and care too much." I love that I was taught these rules at a by young age.

I love ordering room service in 4 or 5 start hotels. I usually order eggs with a non pork option for meat and if I'm feeling a little extra I'll order a mimosa. Thanks for this advice I'll be sure to use it.

Why cold before warm? I start with warm so I can enjoy it while it’s hot, then move on to cold as my palate cleanser as it tends to be fruit. 🤷🏻♀️

It's just a suggestion. I'm sure no one cares in which order you eat your food.
It gives your hot food some time to cool down. This will prevent you burning your tongue. My mom taught me this as a little girl. I was a fast and greedy eater.
@Debbbb and @@@genevievebonneau09 Not so sure about that. It's all just going to end up as one mass in your stomach anyway. I don't think the order in which you eat would make any difference to digestion unless there was a considerable gap between eating each thing, which is unlikely given breakfast is usually a fairly quick meal.
Great tips on signing the bill right away and occupying yourself while the breakfast is put out in order to avoid awkward moments during room service. I never thought of doing those things before, but it makes perfect sense.
My favorite breakfast is Belgian waffles with real butter and warm maple syrup, a bowl of fresh ripe fruit, and a cup of strong builder's tea with raw honey and cream.

I’ve been very intentional to teach my children proper etiquette. Even if you can’t afford to stay at a fancy hotel, you can usually book a reservation for breakfast. We have a local hotel that creates a walk-through holiday display which creates a reason to visit without staying.

There isn't. That's the beauty of buffet breakfasts. There's a huge choice, you're not expected to eat all of it, so you take what you want, in the order of preference. But you couldn't make a 10 minute self congratulatory video from that information....

Listen a lot of times in life we loose the things that make for common sense especially if you are around the wrong people. Bad company ruins good character.
In the US it’s customary to tip room service as well.
Leah DelPezzo every where my dear. I do estimate 10% but common sense first ( not too much nor ridiculous)
20% is standard if it is good/excellent service if that is what you prefer. It depends, to me if the service is just kind of okay I usually tip 15%, and if the service is really good sometimes I tip 35%. I am not affluent, nor do I make a lot of money. I've just worked in the service industry off and on my adult life, and went to college to work in the hospitality/ beauty industry so I know how it goes.
Usually the tip is already included on the bill.
@@ariellekaneza6888 in some countries, people could be offended if you tip. I've read it is a faux pas in countries like Japan, for example. In Spain, tipping hotels staff is not very common, (unless, perhaps, the service required has been pretty complicated or unusual). I am sure, when talking about 5 stars hotels, their staff welcome any kind of "policy", as they receive worldwide guests. But I prefer to investigate carefully the "tip issue" when I travel.

I am rebuilding my life. I have had to work hard. I appreciate this lesson as I am re-experiencing better things with a new appreciation. Nothing wrong with eating like a civilized person and not just shoveling it down. 😊 I am now beginning to travel and have joined a travel club so I'm going to look into your course.

The "self" doesn't develop in a vacuum. The "self" each of us came to be came about as a result of the influences brought to bear on us. And oftentimes those influences are ones that don't end up serving us well. Saying "I won't ever" anything, when referring to a positive goal, is speaking out a negative over our future. Just as the "self" doesn't develop in a vacuum, bringing in the influences that do serve us well (like Anna's principles of elegance) takes discipline and patience with yourself. It won't necessarily happen overnight, but it won't happen at all if you commit that it won't happen. Anna's principles of elegance will serve us well and steer us clear of that which is really not good for us.
I love that you created this video! I was at a hotel in Mykonos earlier in the year and there was a man there who had the worst manners. He piled his food high and was loudly taking selfie videos. It was annoying. I couldn’t imagine how embarrassed his companions were. I’m definitely sharing your videos with everyone planning on traveling internationally in the future.
When I was in both Spain and Italy, in nice hotels, the breakfast buffets were SO gorgeous! Artistic spreads of every kind of food, taking up an entire room - fresh fruits displayed like art, every kind of amazing pastry, natural yogurts, jams, meats, olives, eggs, breads, coffee and tea bar, etc. etc. It was a feast for the eyes as well as the body! Needless to say, it was a challenge to take only what I knew I could eat - everything looked so delicious. Fond memories, and I hope I was elegant...!
Oh, can you PLEASE make a video on elegant date etiquette? Like conversation topics, messy foods to avoid ordering, and who should pay (I think who ever scheduled the date should pay, since you are asking for the other persons' company)?

I’m a bit older than most of the ‘elegant ladies’ watching this video. I do remember being taught these same rules by my Italian American mother and I have endeavoured to pass these same rules onto my daughter. Good manners and eating properly are timeless.

I was here all ready to laugh and criticise, but this advice is all centred around politeness and consideration for others which is SO important and so many people do not consider. I already try to follow most of these principles but I am glad to have this reminder about what to remember each time to just be more polite and respectful to others. Subscribed!
I have a 12 year old daughter and we watch your video, because they teach elegance and etiquette! You can never start to young! When I was young my sisters and I had finishing school. Lessons that we carried with us everyday! Thanks for posting!
Having travelled quite a bit I find that to truly enjoy great food regardless of which meal of the day i find it is very classy to ask the staff for local specialties and suggestions other than the common continental options. There may be dishes which you may not have a chance to try elsewhere. Why is this important?! First it shows that you respect the local culture, 2nd it takes a humble, down to earth person at ease with herself to ask such questions instead of coming across arrogant or overconfident. Last but not least being truly curious leads to learning and what's more it is a smart ice breaker with the staff that is there to serve you!
Some of my tips when travelling:
1. Be very polite and down to earth - leaving in a calvinist swiss culture for years I have realised that a little extra kindness goes a long way. Remember that not everybody is as lucky as you are!
2. Be truly interested in the place you are travelling and their culture - learn a few words of their language to greet the staff and ask their personal tips - you might be impressed but they will remember you ( not because of your money but because of your kindness and humility).
3. Try local fruits, veggies and or other local dishes - you might end up loving them. I still remember with nostalgia the amazing fruits and local dishes we tried in Tanzania a few years ago. The generous breakfasts were part of our experience and of spoiling ourselves.
4. Be natural - awkwardness sometimes is sign of trying too hard - observe but remain you no matter what you do! That is far more classy than trying to fit the mold!
5. Last but not least: eat everything you love but in small portions, and in moderation - don't fake it till you make it - trust me it shows. :) Be generous to yourselves and understand that you are not there to impress anyone but to make memories. This should be your confidence booster and your motto and trust me your partner will appreciate it as well!

I could not possibly agree more about both asking about and trying local specialties. Why bother traveling at all if you're not going to investigate what makes the country you're in worth going to? If you don't want to try new things?
If you're one of those travelers who just wants things the way they are at home, for heaven's sake, *stay* home - and look at pictures of the place on the Internet. Now, more than any other time in history, it's possible to see all of the sights without leaving your sofa, so just don't even bother going unless you want to meet the people, try the food, and check out the *experiences* that can only be had on the ground somewhere else.
Learning to say at least hello, goodbye, and especially thank you in the language of the country you're in can go a *loooong* way towards helping you enjoy your visit. People just love it, and will knock themselves out to be helpful and friendly if you just show a little bit of interest and make a little bit of effort to meet them where they are. This can make all the difference in the experience of travel.
Being lactose intolerant has been a thorn in my side, however lately while staying at updated 2 star rated hotels. I have noticed an improvement on the breakfast bars. I usually get a small serving of wheat cereal and a nonfat yogurt (which I can handle) I take a small spoon of yogurt, dip it in my cereal catching small amounts and eat carefully. If I am still hungry I will get a banana. At home I rarely feel like breakfast, however after traveling I find breakfast necessary. I am enjoying your videos and surely wish I had had some of this knowlege years ago.
Now I respect you even more! 👏💗 I am so happy that you are eco aware and that you brought it up in your vlog. Food wasting is one of the biggest issues in the world and it is very nice of you that you mentioned even those who are not lucky as we are. 🏅 You are a true lady.
I used to do room service and I agree with your advice! Ask for the bill, “can I take the bill off your hands?” It’s so awkward when you’re waiting outside the door for them to fill out the bill, it also doesn’t give them a lot of time to think about the tip. They do it in a rush. I also can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked into a room and people are in their boxers or briefs. It’s so uncomfortable!

Not only did I enjoy your elegant etiquette lesson (common sense in my world), you also inspired within me the vision of the type of woman I desire to attract into my fun life. Your mention of skipping breakfast and Intermittent Fasting was a fun(ny) and heartwarming denouement-something I do as well even when a five-star breakfast is included with the room.
My order usually consists of one 4 minute egg, one piece of lightly toasted bread served alongside a cheese or butter, skip preserves. I like a little fruit juice when fresh pressed juice is offered & if I feel enough thirst to finish (ask for half of a portion) sugar vs. Vitamin c. Milk coffee & I have a bottle of chilled still water delivered to my room or at the table two glasses o share with my dining companion. In just love love your videos so glad I found your channel.

@Mrs. P Hi, Mrs. P, it's when someone puts their hand out to shake yours and you don't put yours out and shake back. Or I think in Regency times it was to literally turn your back on someone trying to say hello to you. Today it would be like if you were at a party and seeing someone coming toward you, turned away from them and started talking to someone else. The severity of it varies, depending on who is doing it to whom - like a higher class to a lower class or how badly ostracized from "society" that person is. Best wishes to you!

This is probably my favorite video of your's so far. I'm not so sure about the cold before hot thing, nor waiting to drink coffee until the end, but I really appreciate discussing courtesy for others and especially for those who serve us.
I was thinking my eggs would get cold if I let them sit, and the first thing I want is coffee.
The reason I love this woman so much because she's actually very humble.
I wish You spoke a little bit about what to do AFTER you finished your breakfast in the room.
My pet peeves are when people a) don't take out the trail so when the cleaners come a big table of food is waiting for them (not their job to clean it, porters do that)
b) when people take the trail to the corridor but do not cover the leftover food, man, it looks yucky and smells!! Other hotel stayers aren't supposed to smell your leftover sausage.

So to sum it up we should cover the dishes with a napkin or something and roll it out into the corridor right? I never took room service so wasn't thinking about it I just go downstairs grab a tray and return it later lol.
@@ani_n01 lol Yeah. So etiquette says first call room service and tell them thanks for the food, we are finished. They will come and take it. If it is lunch or dinner time sometimes the line is busy, it is better to cover the leftover and place it in the corridor, yeah.
