- Wow there's a lot of parts here. I'm experimenting with videos outside of what I usually do here, and this is the first of a few I have planned. Let me know what you think, I was just happy to find the cause of all that noise. M96 engines can be fun.

Just a side note, these motors don't have cam cover gaskets. Typically when removing the Cam covers, a compound called Drei Bond (silicone 1209) is used.
Exactly, it just looks like RTV to folks who don't know that it's supposed to be there.
Very interesting. I just tried to take mine apart and I didn't get anywhere near as far as you did. My head bolts were not budging for anyone ;)

You sure? The left side head bolts are reverse threaded on flat-6 Porsches to keep them from backing out.

Really liked the disassembly. I love videos that show in depth how to work on an engine. So if you ever do an assembly video, please do it in the greatest details. I‘m also always interested in where people get the necessary torque specs for each part :)

The M96 motor, like many VAG motors, don't actually have a gasket for the valve cover/cam girdle. They use an anaerobic sealant instead. Dreibond 1209 is the product specified by Porsche
came down to mention this - I too hate the way many people use RTV, but in this case it really should be just sealant.

The silicone gasket on the covers is what is used from factory. It's interesting that the big end failed. These commonly fail and 'knock' because the Nikasil on the piston walls break down. There are a few ways to fix it but the best is with an iron liner
I was going to leave the same comment. That RTV joint is a common source of leaks on these engines and you need to pull the engine to do the repair.

Weird design choices seem to be a common theme in German automotive engineering.

Fantastic job on the strip down of the M96 motor, I did one myself over Christmas. Love the free valve on the Miata too! I would really like to see a free valve on this motor, it could fit really well on the the head where the valve cage / matrix bolts on.

found a used one for like $400 and that seemed way more likely to succeed.

I'm a european mechanic in the rust belt and i love triple squares! Extremely hard to strip out when compared to allen and torx.
Oh, you were just talking about 12 pointed hex bolts. lmao. Yeah, im with you, those things tend to suck.
i just learned that there is a difference, but i think the xzn/triple square is only available as internal, as in the bit goes inside the screw, while the 12 point is only available as external, which goes on top of the screw or bolt
@@faxxzc yeah thats correct. Unlike torx there is no external version of triple square.
But ill stand by my statement; of thr internal drive fasteners triple squares can by far take the most torque. If you have the tools they rock.
@@Stoppahpowah yes definitely, they are amazing. Have yet to strip one out. Unfortunately you cant really buy triple square screws on the free market yet for a reasonable price. Even torx is still significantly more expensive than standard allen screws

Finally got around to binge watching your channel should've did it sooner some of my favorite UA-cam content so far. I remember hearing rod knock in your first test drive video was gunna comment and say something glad to see your awair and on top of the issue before the crank got destroyed. Your v12 throttle body videos has inspired me to convert my 1980 Honda gl1100 goldwing to fuel injection I've been planning on supercharging it with a used or reman. Aisin Amr500 roots blower my only hang up was figuring out the right blow through carb after seeing your video I think the hayabusa modular throttle body is the perfect candidate for the conversion do you have any recommendations for a stand alone fuel management system preferably diy open source where I can use cheap off the shelf sensors and whatnot.

I used to build and rebuild VW and Porsche 4 cylinder engines...including the 4 cam Carrera motor with roller bearing crank. I thought they were complicated...but this is ridiculous. Thank God they're all now obsoleted by electric motors. MUCH simpler, and MUCH more reliable.
I think the Free Valve idea is a great solution for so much of what is wrong with piston ICE engines.
It's just that the fundamental efficiency of them, even with free valve timing, is only about a third of what an electric motor can achieve. The problem with electric motors has always been how you store electricity. But thankfully, batteries are so much better, lighter and cheaper these days, now that so much attention and research is being put into them. And they're only going to get better.
@@gregscott989 Adding all the heating/cooling systems for the batteries these days seems pretty complicated to me, although electric is definitely MUCH simpler in principle
Good work that man. Just done the same to mine. RTV instead of gasket? 4.53 That’s how they came from the factory. There’s no gasket for the cam covers, the oil pan or the engine cases.

Just last week I saw someone’s Boxster engine on their garage floor - with a big hole in the block.
It was reason number 7 - oil starvation due to blocked pickup. Previous owner had messily used silicone instead of a gasket.
Yeah, it happens. There's M96 killer corners that cause oil starvation.
Do a video series on how to get things done. I wanted to but had no time and haven't quite gotten my stuff done. ;)

Ahh, the famous Vanos device in a Porsche engine. I like the cage around the crankshaft, seems to save some weight.
Ironically I haven’t seen a ton of failures of VVT solenoids, at least for the variocam F1’s. The Plus is a different story
That bearing isn’t just cooked, it’s been roasted over an open fire beyond rare

Holy crap now that's what I call a proper timing chain, a thick double chain... today's Audi, BMW, etc. timing chains look like bicycle chains in comparison... no wonder they fail. I've never seen a flat 6 engine torn down, it was interesting!
Completely agree. It’s so weird, some things on this motor are completely overbuilt and some are under built. Who knows.

My uncle did the same with a watch, took it all apart, then reassembled it. He had one gear left over, and it only took 4 hours to go round, instead of 12.

I like the long format videos! As far as I'm concerned more footage of work getting done is better. I think there are some people who want just the bullet points and a end-of-video "see it run money shot" but I'm more in the Tech Ingredients show everything camp

There isn't supposed to be a valve cover gasket between the valve cover and head on that engine because the Cam Caps are integrated into the valve cover. If you had a gasket between those surfaces it would cause clearance issues.

It was interesting to see how this motor compares to the EG33 in my SVX. I think I will keep it handy the next time someone tries to tell me the EG33 is basically a Porsche motor.
