  • Thank you so much for watching FunAhead TV!
    In this episode, we continue the engine-out project on my 996 Porsche Carrera 4 by reinstalling the camshafts and putting Bank 1 in time. I walk trough the the whole process of how to do that and, in the end, get the engine that much closer to being ready to go back into the car!!

    This is by far the best video I’ve seen of how to time it properly. I just wish you gave some more info for bank two, as you need to turn the crank a couple times in order to begin the process of timing it. Thanks a bunch for your hard work tho.

      Thank you, I appreciate it! Yeaa, admittedly, I realize I definitely should have done a better job communicating how to do that. The info i said is everything you need to know, but I needed to not gloss over it so quickly.
      Pay attention to what I said about where the cams need to be pointing when working on each bank. They’re only 360deg of the crank apart from each other, and the process is the same on each bank.
      Outside of that, let me know if you have any specific questions and I’ll do my best to answer in comment form haha

    I have mine opened up right now and one thing that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is that the chain from the IMS to the exhaust cam can easily skip teeth at the IMS. Perhaps this is obvious, but I was under the impression that it would stay on the correct teeth. As I was trying to set the time it seemed like it was too far out, so I took the sprocket bolts out again and sure enough, by giving a little slack in that chain I could skip teeth. Seeing that makes me realize the importance of having tension on the chains when doing things like IMS bearing replacements.

      Great call! You're right on though... You definitely need to be very careful of that, especially when the cam sprockets are still in place, but the tensioners are out.. Try not to rotate the engine at all during that time!
      Good luck with getting the rest of it back together. If you hit any roadblocks, I'm here if you want to talk it out.

    Really great video. I feel like I could do this with the time and tools someday. How much were the special tools?

      Hey Michael. Thanks for the kind words! I picked up an entire kit on ebay for about $135. It included each of the special tools. I was a little skeptical of the quality, given they're knock off tools, but I know other people have successfully reassembled Porsche engines with the kit, now myself included haha. Worth it, considering the actual Porsche tools cost 10x that. I'll throw a link in the description to the kit I used.

    Hey man, I'm gonna be doing a similar bit of work to my 996.2 watched all the vids super awesome detail in the process. I'm curious where you got the timing tool kit from?

      Hey, thanks for the compliment! So, funny you ask… it used to be available on Ebay, which is where I got it from… however, it seems that the seller no longer has it available. Several people have now asked me about that and I honestly don’t know where to get the kit I have, aside from buying the actual one from Porsche. Sorry man, good luck, but keep me posted if you end up finding it.

      @fun_ahead_tv well I appreciate the reply man. I'll try to scour the webs a little more. I think I found the old ebay listing but no stock lol. Hope the car is still treating you well!!

      @@FunAhead_TV_Official Alright your video was a big help! After finishing the job now I have one point for you... you and I both incorrectly released the tension in the variocam BEFORE reinstalling the cams. I don't know if you noticed, but I did, that the gears of the cams touch the side of the variocam when you do this. Following the service manual, you should install the cams back into the engine first and THEN release the tension after the cams are bolted back into place. This will make sure that the sprockets don't touch the variocam at any point :)

      Good eye! Yes, I did realize that, but only after realizing my mistake on bank 1. Unfortunately, for me, my cheap variocam compression tool stripped out on me as I was working on bank 2, so I used it only to the point of getting the solenoid back in between the chain and had to remove it because it had failed. Fortunately, even still, I was able to reinstall everything on both banks without damaging the sprockets or the solenoids!

    Hi David and great video!
    I'm doing this same job and have a question about bank 1-3 timing. When you go from 6# to 1 Ot on crank, it's only to get away from chain slack right?
    If you later on rotate engine and check the timing , the cam rotor faces out and exhaust cam is flush with head cover when crank is 1 Ot?
    (Of course the cams are timed together with links/marks when assembled first)
    Thanks in advance! 🇸🇪🇺🇲

    • @FunAhead_TV_Official
      @FunAhead_TV_Official  Рік тому

      Hey! Apologies for my slow response time. Yes, the intention of doing that 6 to OT movement is to take out any possible slack. Finally, you time each cylinder bank to The OT mark. Hopefully that helps.
      Good luck with the rest of your build, and let me know if you have any more questions along the way, I’ll do my best to answer!

    • @je753
      @je753 Рік тому

      Thanks, fast answer if you ask me! Timing bank 1-3 is done. Now I just turn 360° to OT again and assambly cams on bank 2 with cam rotor pointing down/in if I am right?😊

    When you rotated to the crankshaft TDC, did you have to go around almost 2 rotations?

    • @FunAhead_TV_Official
      @FunAhead_TV_Official  Рік тому

      Not sure I understand what you’re asking. Basically, yes, it’s 2 full rotations of the crank to fully rotate the engine. Crank has TDC every 360deg, but valvetrain is 720. Then, each bank of cams has it’s own respective TDC position that are 360deg from each other.

    • @danpliss
      @danpliss Рік тому

      @@FunAhead_TV_Official I think I get what Chris was asking. you started out @ 0T TDC. after you installed cams, you went to UT Valvetrain TDC. So, you would have had to rotate 2 full rotations to get to UT. correct?

    I’m curious if you had any other warnings of pad wear other than parts in the oil? I am trying to diagnose a problem on my 99C4. First start of every day I get a chain rattle that sounds like it is coming from bank one, all other starts throughout the day are fine. I replaced the lower chain tensioner because it’s cheap and easy but it did not solve the problem.

    • @FunAhead_TV_Official
      @FunAhead_TV_Official  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Mike! Sorry for the slow response. Actually, no, I had no other signs that anything was wrong.
      Since your rattle is still there, it might be worth replacing the other 2 chain tensioners. It’s always hard to pinpoint a sound like that, so it’s possible that it could be coming from elsewhere on the engine. Just a thought

      Hey Mike... just replaced the chain guides on my buddy's car (and made a video). His warning was using a Durametric his cam deviations for bank 1 was -8.4, where the spec is between +6 and -6. After replacing them the deviation was around -4.9
