I think I've gotten 21 hours of playtime in the first 3 chapters... The Alchemy and combat is TOO GOOD! Thank you for ironing out the mechanics for us~!
Dude I can’t thank you enough for this and the alchemy video. They helped a TON and I’m finally starting to wrap my head around this game. This is my first Atelier, so I was quite overwhelmed, but I’m getting the hang of it now, and having a blast !
Oh my god THANK YOU! this helped me so much! I realize I’m super late but when I saw Ryza 3 come out I decided to start the series so I could eventually get to the third one and fully enjoy it. I got the synthesis down but the combat was a little iffy for me in the beginning. This helped so much!
Since I havent seen anyone mention it so I might as well: 10 is not the maximum Core Charge you can have. As of right now I have 15 as my max. After clearing certain quests you’ll get a rewards called “Hint for --“. This in turn unlocks a treasure map that can be viewed in the Atelier. There are 5 total in the game and 3 (or 2, cant remember) of them have items that raise Max Core Charge. The 5th Treasure has a recipe book for ingots and cloth necessary to make the best weapons and armor in the game
I just got into this game and its my first atelier game and im only 3 or so hours in and felt so overwhelmed and confused. This helped me sooooo much omg. Thank you so much. Now off to watching the synthesis video next
No doubt the best game play guide I have ever seen. And my first game was Pong way back when. So I have seen a lot of walkthroughs. Thanks for the time and effort you and your team put into making these tutorials. I will admit I need to go back and re watch the synthesis section.
OMG thank you so much. I bought this game but the combat really confused me and turn me down after 4 hours. You really hook me back and help me see the sense of combat.
Thank you for this guide, I was super excited to play this game but I got a little stumped when the battle tutorials rolled around. This was a big help!
Ah, thank you very much for this! I was confused by how Normal Orders worked, as I have yet to see one come out. I wish the game would specify those potential conditions! Still, really appreciate your coverage on this game. I have been LOVING it.
Few questions: 1) What's up with the attack/defend icons for each party member? 2) when would you ever not use 'negative mode' for a party member? 3) what is the yellow bar below the HP meter? Thanks for a great and easy to follow tutorial!
Thanks for watching the video! To answer your questions: 1) The attack/defend icons for each party member indicate the "row" that they're in. Later in the game, you'll be able to set formations, and these icons will come to play. The attack icons are for front row while the defend icons are for the back row! 2) I don't know? I've never had to change modes while playing the game, so I can't really answer this question :D! I felt like if I really needed someone to use a Skill or an Item, I'd just change to them and do it myself! 3) The yellow bar below the HP meter is Stun. Basically, if this meter drops too quick, you might have to check to see if you've equipped good armor on that character. The enemies have a similar bar below their health meter! Hope this helps!
Thank you!!!! I know I’m late but I just started this series in hopes that I can fully appreciate 2 and the new 3rd one coming out. I can’t believe I slept on this series, it’s everything I want in a game. I’m really excited to learn as much as I can and enjoy the game to its fullest so instead of another playthrough I can move on to Ryza 2 (the struggles of being a completionist and a perfectionist lol). Thank you! These video tutorials were very thorough!
Came across your channel while checking for reviews regarding ryza. And your review sold the game for me. Your review is concise about discussing game mechanics. Thank you
Much appreciated! I've had this game for a couple of years now but it kinda started collecting dust. Since an anime came out, I decided to dive back in but was lost with the battle system. Thank you!
Glad to hear! I know that the prospect of real time combat can be overwhelming for some, but when I cracked the code, I thought that others might want to know how I approached the whole thing. Once you find that approach, I'd say the battles become relatively easy over time, save for a new really tough bosses in the world!
@@auntieapple7465 hopefully you got it! I’d say for regular battles attack regularly until tactic lvls 2-3 and for bosses 3-5. Only use special abilities when your teammates ask for a move or you have a lot of points And get the right party setup so you do those moves easily
Even knowing all this I know I'll be having a hard time managing it in real time, there's so much stuff going on. I wish they gave you the option to freeze the system when an action is engaged, like most Square games with ATB do.
I recommend just practicing some of these one at a time. It might seem fast, but when you get into the swing of things, you'll realize that it's actually manageable. I'm a person who prefers turn based combat over real time in RPGs, but I do feel that the system they have here grows on you over time. Reach out if you're still having problems!
Great video, (and the alchemy one too). Despite these videos I feel the mechanics are just a little overcomplicated and not very intuitive. For example, rather than look at what's happening in combat, you seem to actually need to focus on all the numbers and items around the screen rather than what's going on in the middle of it, you know, like the game :) I've been playing the legend of heroes and that has a deep combat system but makes a lot of sense in how to use it without the need for a long tutorial like this. I want to stick at this game though, but I feel overwhelmed by it all at times.
What you described is probably a problem I had with it’s UX design. Everything is pretty and themed, but from a functionality standpoint? It’s all over the place! I’m hoping it’ll get better in the next game!
Thanks for the guide, as I already finished the game long before watching the video the only new thing I learned was how to escape from battle, as I somehow missed that tutorial.
I want to thank you for this video. I played this game right when it released and stopped near the end because of life stuff. I just decided to pick it up and finish it since I purchased the 2nd game but I got killed in the first 3 fights I attempted lol.
I can see how challenging it is! One of the reasons why I made this video is if anyone goes into a hiatus with the game, they can just watch this and get back into playing! Glad to hear that's exactly what happened with you!
I love the series but my favorite part was the turn based system. Every time I decide to try Ryza series again, I’ll rewatch this video for motivation. I just can’t get into it yet. Imma try again tomorrow, I’ve let this game sit for too long and I would like to play all 3 eventually.
I played trought "naked" legendary(No gear inheritance) and didn't even know "run from combat" was a thing untill basicly the last harsh struggle late midgame(before reliable, high quality armor/weapon crafts). I kinda feel stupid dying so many times trying to snatch materials in zone where monsters overpowered me, sure legendary ain't "hard" but when you don't have the gear enemies tend to kill you off very quickly. My naked run in Ryza 2, have been easy in comparison due to how corecharges works, if needed you can spam healing items without returning to the atelier every 2nd battle.
Just got this game and I kinda find it pretty confusing between the combat system and the alchemical lab. So thank you very much for your guides, they're helpful.
Again great video, and the alchemy one. Could you do a video on how to find items, starting from when you receive a quest. I struggle to understand what I need, where to go, or how to find items. Many thanks
As far as how to find items goes, a lot of it is just going to be experimentation of what gathering tools to use on certain things on the field. Once you've gathered them once, your Table of Contents should show where you can farm these items! Hope this helps!
This combat system is very different to other turn based RPGs even some games with ATB systems too. The first struggle I had is how to heal my party members after battle or where to get healing items where I only just found out myself with the core system while items like bombs and ointments through alchemy. Had my mistake to go aggressive mode but so far only done this in random bosses but that way would be trouble with bosses.
very nice video, i myself have been having difficulty getting the "extra order" to trigger to finish the party quests, so I'll go and see if I can do it after watching this.
@@BacklogBattle I was able to execute an extra order, so woot! One thing I didn't realize was that if you go into a quick action, it kinda pauses the battle , so you can think about things a little bit and actually see if you can trigger extra orders at the time, and then cancel out of the quick action without spending the points.
Thanks for the Video. I got used to the battle mechanics and its really fun (22 hours into the game). I didn't know about the core cycler ability tho. Time to get it :P
Whats the difference between the negative and aggressive modes? This is my first Atelier game and I'm loving it, such and underrated series, im gojnf to buy the season pass for this game, the trilogy game collection thing on Nintendo online store and preorder the new game ASAP, You're videos are a great help, so thank you.
Aggressive mode let’s non-controlled party members to spend AP freely. I’ve never had to use this at all in my playthrough. Also, glad you’re enjoying the game and are jumping into the series!
Look for these names under the Skills list for each character. I have a suspicion that these are Orders. Their description should tell you what kind of Order they are.
Just got this game after a lot of debate (couldn’t decide to play this first or skip it and play 2 right away) and it took me 10 minutes to figure out what the yellow gauge is for under your health. Lol
I think there is no way to do it, but I would like to have an option to chose with which character you start battle. Other than that good video and also thanks for the recommendation earlier, I like this game a lot. Will probably play a whole lot this weekend.
Glad to hear that the recommendation is going great! It’s definitely one of my favorites of the year still, and I’m even wanting to replay the game another time on the PS4!
You certainly can choose who is your character upon entering battle. i can't remember the exact way to do it, but where you set your formation someone will have a star icon. that is the person you control when battle starts
To change the battle target, you just press Left or Right on the D-Pad at any time. A target arrow will appear on your target once you do this! Also, moving during battle is only useful to change formations later on. You can put people in front of people in the back line to defend them from damage. You’ll unlock this feature later on!
@@BacklogBattle Thanks a lot! They actually never tell you how to change targets, at any point in the game as far as I know and it's been driving me insane! Thanks for the info on movement also. Greatly appreciate the swift response! Your channel is pretty dope, and I hope that it continues to grow!
I’m trying to grind all my character quests right now and I’m having so much trouble getting extra order quests completed. Either I’m too strong and can’t stun enemies before I get an extra order, or I can I only get extra orders once per a strong enemy. I need to work on my stun techniques more. Anyway, thank you for this video because yeah I’ve been lost on the run away feature. Also a tip for anyone who is trying to complete all the in battle quests - when you unlock the weasel roast next to hideout, you can complete quests in the practice battle with the weasel instead of in field with real enemies. This is super helpful so you can complete quests and then just focus on real technique when it battle in field. Although, weasel roast battles tend to be pretty short unless you stun enough to cause the weasel to break but even then you’re lucky if you even get one extra order in.
I watched your other alchemy guide video and I just watched this. I just needed to leave a like and a comment to commend you on making videos of such sterling quality. These days, the platform is rife of guide makers making meme-filled videos with their incessant need to inject their oh-so-funny personality disguised as guides. I know this video is pretty old as of now, but keep up the good work.
I highly recommend not switching too much during battle. Switching characters resets the available action orders, which means you’ll have to wait for the new ones to appear. This is bad, especially when an enemy decides to try and charge up for a powerful attack and you’ve no action orders to use to either stun or outright defeat them entirely.
I have a question about this game's combat system : In battles with more than one enemy all characters must attack a single enemy or can each one of them fight a different opponent separately ?
After you played the game, how was the combat? I kinda liked the combat but I understand that the pure turn-based players are missing something. In your opinion, what could be improved in the combat for better experience?
Great question! I like the combat a lot, but I know there's a lot of room for improvement. One thing that I kinda wish the game had is that the balance between using crafted items and using AP need to reevaluated. During most of my playthrough, I only used crafted items for healing and not much else! But for the most part, I was able to go through the entire game utilizing just the new AP, Tactical Level, and Order mechanics. It's a shame because we spend so much time crafting great items that knowing that you can get by without them is a little bit of a shame. I frankly don't know how you can balance this out, as I am no designer, but I do feel that with Atelier Lulua - the only other Atelier game I played before - that items were more vital in that game. Granted, I don't really want the developers to get rid of the new mechanics they introduced with Ryza's battle system, but certainly altering it so that there's varying degrees of strategy that you'll have to implement could breathe some newness into it! That said, I think turn based players love the strategy in those games, outside of overleveling to overcome challenges, and I think an added layer of strategy would really make this new battle system shine! I hope this answers your question!
Thank you so much for the video, the battle system is definitely overwhelming but this helps a lot. One question, what does "move" do besides enabling escape?
It allows you to change your formation later on, but early on, it just changes where your character is onscreen. Location does affect what kinds of attacks they might get clipped on, and later, when formation matters, you can literally position someone behind another character to prevent them from getting direct damage!
Telling what actual buttons are used for orders, skills, switching etc would really help. In the video, the turn gauge stops occasionaly. What causes that?
So i came to ask a question, why does ryza sometimes do 2 attacks but most the time she only hits once with her stick.. i got excited when i saw her do 2 physical attacks thinking i must have leveld up and learned a new ability that makes her swing 2x but then right after she never did it again.
Great video! This seems like a silly question...but how do you change enemy targets during battle? I see the giant 'Target' sign over one enemy, but have not figured out a way to switch to attack a different one until the first enemy is defeated.
@@Justinlmd You know, with the frenetic nature of combat, I definitely can't blame you for missing things. Also, the game randomly gives you tutorials on battle when you're not in battle, so it's not your fault for missing what they throw at you :D
I just picked up the game, so question: I now know that items are used by consuming core charges and the items themselves aren’t consumed. So is there any point in keeping a lower quality item once I synthesize a more powerful one, or should I just sell it/keep it for other recipes? For instance, if I have a Grass Bean with Poison Cure that is of the same quality as my currently equipped Grass Bean without, is there any benefit to keeping the Grass Bean without Poison Cure other than having another healing item to use? In other words, are items in this game more like equippables rather than consumables? And if that’s the case, why would you ever consume the item? And then why are they called consumables in the backpack tab?
I didn't see any mention of the buttons on the enemy attack action. Does it mean nothing? I assumed if I pressed the same button I might defend but the combat is a little fast for me to know.
That indicates which enemy is actually going to attack. An enemy will have an A or B or another letter in their nameplate when you have them selected to let you know which icon represents your current target! Hope this helps!
Today I finally got around to Ryza in my backlog. I put in about three hours, up to the point where I need to craft the scythe using a recipe morph. I got so frustrated with not being able to figure out what to do I just turned it off and walked away from it. I still don't understand the Order system...do you switch to the character requesting the order? Do you have to do the order immediately? I also don't get the Core Charge thing...is it really just a currency for using items? I thought it was related to the core crystal thingy the guy gives Ryza. For a game with so many text-dump tutorials, it does a terrible job actually teaching the player (especially someone new to the series) how to play!
Good questions! Let me answer them: 1. You do not change to the character requesting the order! You execute it as your current character! 2. The orders are only available for a limited amount of time and are super powerful, so try to do them as much as you can. 3. Items in Ryza are NOT consumables! However, your ability to use any of them are, in the form of Core Crystals. For example: if you want to use a Potion, that Potion won’t be consumed or lost. Instead, you will consume a Core Crystal. I highly recommend rewatching the video again as it covers a lot of these concepts! Ryza is very different from other Atelier games and RPGs, so try to understand the concepts here and I know you’ll get it!
@@BacklogBattle Thank you, that explains a lot on both of those topics! And I watched another video on how to do the Recipe Morph which was also helpful. I'll give it another go later, but for now I have Christmas cookies to bake!
Which part are you having trouble with? It’s been more than half a year since I’ve played Ryza, so I’m not quite remembering this fight in its entirety.
Backlog Battle I can’t get the dragon at meteorite castle to die I guess I have trouble using battle methods maybe I’m not strong enough or need better equipment but I can’t seem to get good enough equipment
Make sure you have items that have higher quality and go through your recipes! You can try and aim for higher quality equipment so you can improve their stats!
Orders will always be requests by other party members for you to do something on your currently controlled character. If you look at the video, it’ll always pop up on the same section of the screen.
I've been playin this game for a lil while now and with you Guideline about the battle system has really helped out a lot but I see that there is another action you didn't cover and that is THE NORMAL ORDER. How is that executed?
Only triggers if you’re in danger, specifically if your health is 1/4. Personally I didn’t find these orders useful, as they’re typically just last minute heals that you’re often better off just healing yourself.
@@BacklogBattle It boggles my mind, how such a gem of a channel can have this small of a subscriber count. With this video quality, top notch presentation, I at first thought that it was a 50-100k cream of the crop, gold mine-type review channel. It may sound pretentious and all, but assuming that it's a 1-3 mil channel would be offensive, really, because a bigger portion of those channels are lazy by that point and it can be easily seen through that shiny wrapper + they rarely ever cover such a niche genre of games, not to mention even playing them for some good hours. There's some wholesomeness to it, you feel like at home, seriously. Anyway, thank you for this channel, Alex. I hope it stays the same and I'm 100% sure you will get to the top eventually. Slowly, but surely.
You’re welcome, truly! My goal is to cover and present niche games as if they’re triple A titles - without misrepresenting them, of course! I hope I’ve done that so far, and I don’t intend on resting on my laurels either! We’ve only just begun 😉
Is there a switch controller layout for this somewhere? I keep forgetting how to activate certain things and the don't tell you what buttons to use. This is my main complaint with this game, if the tutorial doesn't communicate what to do (and a bunch of them really don't) you either have to forget it, or trial and error your way through until you figure it out.
I just quickly checked and sadly, there doesn’t seem to be one. What commands are you looking for specifically? I do know that many of the games commands do have visible prompts when they become available. Checked both synthesis and combat and confirmed that they’re both there

I love the series but my favorite part was the turn based system. Every time I decide to try Ryza series again, I’ll rewatch this video for motivation. I just can’t get into it yet. Imma try again tomorrow, I’ve let this game sit for too long and I would like to play all 3 eventually.
Keep at it! It's easier than you think! Just focus on triggering those Orders!
Thanks for this video! I got far enough into the game that restarting seems like an awful idea but I've been away so long I forget how to play haha
You’re welcome!
You explained everything so clearly! Thank you so much! :)
Thanks for the tutorials (this one and the alchemy one), I've just begun and I didn't know what the hell I was doing for the first few hours, lol.
Thanks your videos have really helped me
You’re very welcome! Hope to see more of your comments in future videos!
Thanks for another great guide.
My pleasure!
I wish you were my math teacher, thanks man!
You're welcome! Enjoy!
This is great! Thank you :)
This game looks sick. I like the other Atelier games but the battle system looks like the most fun out of all entries.
It’s fast paced and strategic! Love it!
Thanks for the info
Just got this game and I kinda find it pretty confusing between the combat system and the alchemical lab. So thank you very much for your guides, they're helpful.
You're very welcome! I'm glad my guides have helped!
Top video man! Good Job!
Appreciate it!
Thank you for the video. It's really useful
You’re welcome!
very nice video, i myself have been having difficulty getting the "extra order" to trigger to finish the party quests, so I'll go and see if I can do it after watching this.
Definitely let me know if the video helped out! I want to make sure that I’m making these tutorials the right way!
I ran into the same situation 10 hours in, until I finally finished the quest!
@@BacklogBattle thank you so much for explaining, this is easily my favourite game series,
What are specials? And how to activate them? (to be more specific the stuff like "ryza special" "ravens feather" "martial arts")
Look for these names under the Skills list for each character. I have a suspicion that these are Orders. Their description should tell you what kind of Order they are.
@@BacklogBattle thxs man been enjoying the game thanks for the vid love the content new sub.
No problem! Glad to be of help!
You certainly can choose who is your character upon entering battle. i can't remember the exact way to do it, but where you set your formation someone will have a star icon. that is the person you control when battle starts
shortstacks0 You press start/+ I believe. It’s shown as “make main character”
Is it possible to change your battle target, or does the game pick your target for you? Also, what is the advantage of moving during battle?
To change the battle target, you just press Left or Right on the D-Pad at any time. A target arrow will appear on your target once you do this! Also, moving during battle is only useful to change formations later on. You can put people in front of people in the back line to defend them from damage. You’ll unlock this feature later on!
@@BacklogBattle Thanks a lot! They actually never tell you how to change targets, at any point in the game as far as I know and it's been driving me insane! Thanks for the info on movement also. Greatly appreciate the swift response! Your channel is pretty dope, and I hope that it continues to grow!
Glad to be of help! Enjoy the game!
Heather Crockett thank you for the tip! Really appreciate it! When I made this video, the fight with the weasel wasn’t even in the game!
Thank you! I don’t make guides often (the last one I made was for Tales of Arise), but I’m just happy I was able to help you out!
Do you recommend switching characters in the battles or do you always use the same one?
I highly recommend not switching too much during battle. Switching characters resets the available action orders, which means you’ll have to wait for the new ones to appear. This is bad, especially when an enemy decides to try and charge up for a powerful attack and you’ve no action orders to use to either stun or outright defeat them entirely.
I have a question about this game's combat system : In battles with more than one enemy all characters must attack a single enemy or can each one of them fight a different opponent separately ?
You can change the target with the d-pad. Your team will focus whoever is selected.
@@BacklogBattle Oooh, I haven't unlocked formations yet so that explains it! Thanks!
wow really done well and tank you :)
Telling what actual buttons are used for orders, skills, switching etc would really help. In the video, the turn gauge stops occasionaly. What causes that?
Some animations and attacks stop the timeline from moving. As far as I can tell, Orders do this a lot.
excellent, video.. subscribed
Thank you!
Just press left or right at any time and it should change your target!
Backlog Battle ah, thanks. Not sure how I missed that. I was trying to target while selecting skills/items I guess
You're on the right track. I typically don't save low quality things and sell them for money!
I didn't see any mention of the buttons on the enemy attack action. Does it mean nothing? I assumed if I pressed the same button I might defend but the combat is a little fast for me to know.
There’s no such thing as pressing a button to properly defend an enemy attack in this game. You either get hit or you don’t.
@@BacklogBattle ok. I just want to know why when the enemy's attack "diamond" is coming down it sometimes has an A or B on it.
That indicates which enemy is actually going to attack. An enemy will have an A or B or another letter in their nameplate when you have them selected to let you know which icon represents your current target! Hope this helps!
@@BacklogBattle I hadn't thought of that. Thank you.
You’re welcome! Enjoy! 😊
Let me answer them:
This video sucks!
How do you unlock different ap skills. I saw someone say they were At level 50 and still haven’t got any skills.
Did you do the quests for each character?
@@BacklogBattle slowly doing them. But that makes sense. I thought you just got the passive skills from that.
I have a question....how do you battle the dragon at meteorite castle? I can’t seem to kill it any suggestions?
Which part are you having trouble with? It’s been more than half a year since I’ve played Ryza, so I’m not quite remembering this fight in its entirety.
Backlog Battle I can’t get the dragon at meteorite castle to die I guess I have trouble using battle methods maybe I’m not strong enough or need better equipment but I can’t seem to get good enough equipment
Make sure you have items that have higher quality and go through your recipes! You can try and aim for higher quality equipment so you can improve their stats!
@@kellymorris8478 try to see if this helps steamcommunity.com/app/1121560/discussions/0/1643178512738990698/
Ace Breaker thanks I killed that dragon!
I don't get Orders. It are requests from party members to do something? How do you know they are requesting something?
Orders will always be requests by other party members for you to do something on your currently controlled character. If you look at the video, it’ll always pop up on the same section of the screen.
The request and the portrait of the person requesting will be shown on the top left corner of the screen.
@@BacklogBattle Oh thank you so much for the quick reply and useful info.
Not all heroes wear capes, brother!!!
Ain’t that the truth!
@@BacklogBattle Sweet!
Checked both synthesis and combat and confirmed that they’re both there
haha, i never realised until know that you can always flee from battle by moving down. i always just sticked with the battle. xd
Daym what is this style of combat? Not quite turn-based, seems quite engaging! Are there any other games with similar combat system?
The sequels!
