  • I saw The Rise Of Skywalker last night. There is a lot about it I like and a lot about it I do not like or at least need to let sink in. The Rise Of Skywalker is JUST ok. It is not amazing. It is not groundbreaking. This is unfortunately coming from me. But then again, I think this movie had to deliver a LOT to wrap up the entire SAGA. I liked the dynamic of Rey and Kylo Ren again, however JJ got lost in the weeds of ideas. This film is so fast that you almost forget to remember whats happening.

    Things I like
    - Bendemption as a whole
    - Visuals
    - Brilliantly use of force connection between Reylo as a narrative device
    Things I don't like
    - Throwing away the message that you don't need to come from important bloodline to be someone
    - Everything is just a nostalgia trip to 200++ Wookiepedia pages
    - They spent 90 minutes finding a map to Palpatine
    - Again, TFA's whole plot was chasing a map to Luke while First Order constantly ambushing on our heroes, this one just swap Luke and Palpatine, it just chasing a map again.
    - Rey is still a character who don't define her own meaning until the end, she just depends on being someone important.
    - Threat of action scenes are low and soulless, except those with Kylo
    - Some scenes are just unnecessary and cringey somehow

Its not hard to end the sequel trilogy honestly IMO. Kylo redeems himself and lives, Rey and Ben build an academy that encourages all aspects of the force calling themselves Skywalkers. Leia and Ben reconcile. Its not hard. Palpatine didn't have to come back, make Kylo the villain for half but due to his sentiment towards Rey, Hux takes over. Hux is about to kill Rey and then Kylo turns. Im basically making fanfiction but it makes sense, builds upon TLJ's idea of balance and honoring the past but going forward

The good for me was Han and Ben. When he calls him, “Dad”, so bittersweet. Ben gets to be a Solo, and we see that shoot from the hip style his dad had. Oh! That was so good! There was the sweetest Reylo moment, brief, but we got it. The bad was the pace of the movie and JJ throwing everything he could into the mix. I was on record that JJ made me nervous. I was a “Lost” fan. JJ does wild creative beginnings, but his endings are a mess. Lost was an example. Very “WTF was that?”. I liked RoS as a Star Wars movie, but of course, my outcome would have included a fully redeemed and alive Ben Solo. Maybe not happily ever after. Maybe living in exile? But, finally free from the Darkside. So overall, it’s bittersweet for me.

I agree with you that it overall felt like JJ had too many ideas. The whole movie was fun and the effects and music were awesome, but to me it felt strangely rushed and incomplete.
Rey being a Palpatine didn't really bug me because I kinda expected such a crazy twist, but what bugged me was that they were constantly shoehorning her into that Skywalker legacy role while ignoring Ben as the real Skywalker and didn't let Rey just be herself like during the time around TFA.
And oh my, Ben dying like that was horribly moving, but so unnecessary to me. It just doesn't come off as hopeful that he had so little to do in TROS and got his redemption but then just died forgotten by everyone, no honor, no family reunions, not even a ghost or burial. Not to mention that his family came to help Rey, but ignored him after clinging so much to Bendemption in the previous movies. I'm so disappointed to what they did with his story. Especially with Adam's epic performance. (And Rey kinda felt weird and sort of overpowered in that movie? Idk? Or am I the only one who thinks that...?)
Got a neutral opinion towards the trio, it was interesting to see, but nothing special to me.
Didn't expect much of the new characters either because they are usually not important in the end, but Jannah being a trooper like Finn was pretty nice.
I expected Dark Rey to just be a short vision but she was a missed opportunity, JJ could've played around with it more in my opinion.
I'm glad Reylo is canon though and loved the message with "They want to destroy us by letting us believe that we are alone, but we aren't". The Han scene was also a good idea and very moving. Plus, Rey's new lightsaber was cool. Glad she got her own instead of taking Anakin's.
But overall it felt like there was something missing about TROS and I can't put my finger on it.

I think it says something that Disney was so unable to find anyone able/willing to finish the trilogy that they literally let Abrams make 2 movies in one because he was the only one with any clue how a trilogy could end. Why would Anakin appear as a force ghost when he had no connection at all with Rey? The same would go with all of the other jedi.
The reason why Rey saw Luke and Leia as force ghosts because that's who she knew, and who she connected with.
And if you remembered in Rey's opening scene, she says something like "can you hear me?" (I forgot the actual line, but she was talking about the past Jedi)...and in her moment of need, she heard of all of the jedi voices to help her get up and defeat palpatine.

I think the movie has potential in its..hum..concepts...and ideas. I don't think it was rushed out, I believe JJ and company just didn't want to venture into uncertain ground.
The problem is that everything here is shown too quickly. There is too much ..."stuff".
an example...I love seeing the dark side Rey, but it doesn't get the time to really impact on Rey's character because right after that she's busy fighting Kylo...and then the dark side Rey never comes back. I would have thought she would come back when Rey is in front of Palpatine but no. I could go on with other examples but I'll stop here.
I think overall this is a *fun ride* but it tries to go too many places and do too many things.
Finn had to tell something to Rey and we'll never know...Who's that gal Poe flirts with? Barely described..Where did Lando get all those ships...I mean: all of this is stuff for the expanded universe but...you've got to take care of themovie here...you can't always delegate to comic-books, tv series and toys all of the meat.
    ...
I don't get why Rey chooses to use Skywalker's last name and why Ben had to die...but ok: those are choices, not bad execution.

I’ve gotta say I kinda loved the movie. I entirely get where others are coming from with their criticisms, and at the end of the day we all have different subjective opinions and enjoy different things about the franchise. It was by no means what I would have wanted it to be going in, but I found it ended up being what I needed instead.
The biggest take home for me is that going in to it I was exhausted (by life and franchise discourse in general), I’m personally in a period of change and all of the stress it entails. But sat there watching it without any level of critical hat on, just allowing the movie to come at me, I was instantly transported to my 10 year old self, all wonder, joy and hopeful optimism. It was a film that perfectly encapsulated that 30 Saturday morning republic serial Flash Gordon trashy vibe. As convoluted and ridiculous as much of it was, it fit that episodic serial mould.
I think that as adult fans, we’ve somewhere down the line forgotten what it was to be a kid experiencing these movies for the first time, free from the cynical view of adulthood. We’ve analysed these movies too much, sought out too many symbols and details (look at the continuing discourse over using bombers in TLJ) and have just flat out put them on pedestals.
I don’t mean to tell you that you’re in any way ‘wrong’ to have the opinions that you do - it is all subjective after all.

After watching all that plus Solo plus Rogue One, the special edition of the original trilogy, surprisingly, for all its praise and worship, felt just as ridiculous and just as fun. I don't think it has anything to do with that.
I think Johnson understood TFA greatness (all that meta thing about kylo ren being an angry Vader cosplayer and Rey being a grown up Star Wars fan with star wars decorations in her home) and ran with it. I think JJ Abrams didn't understand the greatness of his own story: his meta approach to the force awakens was a narrative solution to a quasi impossible problem (but he didn't understand that it was also the charm of this new film themes): If we have the legacy characters, they will cast a shadow on the new ones, and we don't want that; if we only have the new ones, there is no star wars (because starwars is a character driven story and we need han, leia and luke to at least pass the torch), and we don't want that. So, imo, JJ and Kasdan decided that the legacy characters should be seen as myths and legends by the new characters (just like in real life they are seen by fans): so you can put the new moviegoers and the old fans in the same room (without having to build a story that is boring to old fans who already know who is Luke and the jedi, neither a story that it is not for new comers who doesn't know who is Luke leia Han Vader and the jedi). Example: When someone mentions Luke, Rey smiles in awe and she says "i thought he was a myth" and now we all see Luke as a legend (same with Han, the resistance, the jedi). And the movie worked pretty well.
I believe that the last jedi was a more consistent continuation from the force awakens than the rise of skywalker; but anyways: i think that JJ didn't just surrender to the toxicity, he just made the movie he would want to make in the first place if he was in charge of the whole trilogy; i am pretty positive that this is why episode 9 seems like two movies merged in one: he did what he planned to do for 8 and 9 in one movie by also being as true as possible to what happened in the last jedi: some things he used cleverly, some others he just retconned.
Conclusion: i think Abrams did just what he wanted, not what the toxic fandom wanted. And i think he didn't have the creativeness to figure out where to go from Luke and Snoke's death; some people can't handle freedom.
I don't really think the toxic fandom makes a great pressure to Disney. People who does not read comment sections (and it is like more than 95%) don't know or care about it. My friends and girlfriend who followed this trilogy with me doesn't know any of it: the "oh the cross sword is dumb" "rey is a mary sue" "it is a rehash" "it is a rehash but i also complain about the parts that are different" "fire jj abrams" "Rian Johnson should direct 9 after 8 comes out" "fire rian johnson and kathleen" "he shited on the fans" "he shited on Luke" passed through them, they never heard any of it. Ok maybe the part that racist and mysoginistic dudes harassed Kelly Marie Tran, but they thought that those were some white supremacists and not the dumb fatass next door.

Such as, How easily Palpatine died to a simple error in his methods (back in revenge of the sith, mace windu reflected his lightning back onto palpatine) and now rey does the same thing, which is how he dies, I didn't like that she was afraid of her heritage, when she said to the old woman that she was a skywalker and not a palpatine, I thought that ruins her bravery. I also thought that Ben dying was completely uneccesary as his arc was complete after turning to the light, whereas rey needed to die for her arc. How did JJ honestly make that scene and then have the audacity and arrogance to throw subtle shade at TLJ in it? Luke and Yoda talked about learning from failure, legacy, and selflessly passing yourself onto the next generation. Just a joke.

Rey and Kylo are opposites in the force, one powerfull light, other powerfull darkness. They are balance, if one changes the side, one have to die. I think this explaines that end 🤷🏻‍♂️ And Rey being a Palpatine and choosing the name Skywalker means that she became the balance itself. Maybe the yellow saber means that too.

Found out about Ben's death on Wednesday and spent the next two hours just crying my eyes out. How dare they do this to Ben, Rey, and us😠😠😠💔💔💔💔💔
I've read tones of books, seen many TV shows and movies, and played so many RPGS, and I've only seen a tragic romance done right once. ONCE!!!! And that was the Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson, where they both died. In that case it made total sense, because there was no where else for the characters to go. Elend, our main guy, was the Emperor of what was left of mankind, on that world at least. Vin, his wife, became the Goddess of Preservation to face off against the God of Ruin, who had been behind most if the problems throughout the trilogy. Elend dies in battle and Vin basically says to Ruin "You shouldn't have killed him, because that was the only thing keeping me alive." Vin goes full kamikaze on Ruins' ass and they both die. At the end, one of the other main characters gets the powers of both Preservation and Ruin and becomes Harmony. Harmony leaves a message for the rest of the cast saying that "I just had a chat with Elend and Vin. They're fine where they are, and don't want to come back." That all made sense. This movie does not.
I've always hated the love stories that end with one of the lovers dead. The bullshit excuse of "He lives on in Rey" is exactly that. Bullshit. The writers have done us wrong, and they did Ben and Rey wrong. I've already got tickets for Sunday with my friends, but Disney will not be getting another dime out of me until Ben is resurrected and he and Rey get the life together that they deserve.

I remember the mistborn series having one of the only tragic endings that didn't make me feel depressed. I was a bit sad, but it was nice to hear the characters were happy and ok wherever they were.
I can watch and read tragic stories and sometimes come out of them feeling like the story was overall good, but the problem is I can never re-experience the story a second time without the heavy sadness and anger they inspire hitting me twice as hard, so I usually avoid ever seeing or reading a tragic story a second time. In this case that is devastating to me because I love Star Wars, and would have loved to watch the ending over and over again. I didn't mind the tragedy in the PT because the OT ended on a happier note. I didn't mind the ST opening with Han and Leia's relationship having been a bitter sweet one because I thought they had to be gearing up for a bigger happy ending. Moving this saga from tragic, to bittersweet, and back to tragic is just depressing. Ben and Rey could never have had a completely normal white picket fence existence because there would always be those who wouldn't care if he was redeemed after his run as a villain, but they could have been together.

I have mix feelings with Episode IX, I'm a fan of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, one was the best way to return to Star Wars, and the other was an amazing movie with beautiful visual storytelling and great message, this one, has a great ending for the sequel trilogy and the characters but I have problems with the way that was executed.
GOOD THINGS: Kylo Ren and Rey's story, Leia's sacrifice, Lando, Chewbacca, C3po, Origin of Snoke and the First Order, visuals, music, sound design, and the ending was a perfect rhyme with Episode III, VI and IV.
BAD THINGS: The editing in the first act, saturated with exposition dialog, retcon of some thing that The Last Jedi did, that doesn't have to fix.
MY THOUGHTS: I dont hate it, I dont Love it, Is NOT A BAD Star Wars movie, but is not a great one either, is my least favorite of the sequel trilogy, but at least has a great ending for my favorite characters, I dont like to give scores to movies, but for The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, I always put them between 8 or 9 (Yes, I love those movies)
For the Rise of Skywalker I'll give it a 6.5 or 7, I have to watch it a second time and organize my feelings about it.

Thank you for your reaction video. I’m still processing and will definitely watch it two or three more times. My first impression is that there were way too many new characters added and not enough character development and screen time for the main characters that we already had. Ben Solo had zero lines in the final act and I didn’t see justification for the title being The Rise of Skywalker. I like Finn despite his arc not making much sense...maybe he represents the fans that just love Rey. I love Rey in TLJ and TFA but am still coming to terms with her being written as a Palpatine. She comes full circle and still ends up alone on a desert planet. I will always think that Ian’s best work is in the prequels and originals. I’m glad you mentioned the editing because I felt it was choppy and didn’t really understand why at first. Even the music didn’t carry me as in previous films. Someone said in the GWS livestream last night that John Williams wrote score for a different story. In my opinion, Rian Johnson solidified Rey as being canon but at least we got a kiss. Bendemption is canon but I wanted to see more and feel more weight to Ben’s arc and him saving the galaxy. Hux was underused...we didn’t need General Pryde though Richard E. I Grant is a phenomenal actor. So many feelings and, as I said at the beginning, I’m still processing. I want to like this movie!! I’m looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts. I hope you and GWS can do a collab livestream. I need to feel better about this movie. (I hate that it was marketed as the end of the Skywalker saga because it didn’t feel like an end at all.). So many people died for him (Han, Leia, even Luke) and now all of their deaths seem kinda meaningless. So I don't think him dying for Rey was a good ending (even though I will forever ship Reylo). Yesterday, I was all up in arms because of what I'd heard leaked. I was over at Girls with Sabers just insulting this movie and mad at JJ, and today, I saw the movie, and I'm humbled. This has taught me to never judge something before you see it and experience it for yourself, something I should have known, given my age. I'm 44. I've been a fan since I was 7 years old. Honestly, I was not a big fan of the prequels, but having watched them again with my husband last week, I have a new appreciation for them. I liked that the sequel trilogy took us back to what was familiar, but I also understood people who were mad because they did not follow the extended universe. And I was upset when they had things in the script of TFA, that would have gone a long way to explaining some of the things that have happened in TROS and made it a bit less shocking (and explained things better in the first two movies, too), cut. However, I still really like each of the films. I've only seen it one time in the theater, and it was in IMAX, so the sound gave a good punch to the action. It was pretty intense. At first, the quick cuts between scenes was exciting. Then, I felt it got to be too much. Movies need some time where things are slower and more character driven. Some of the moments weren't quite earned and I felt they had everything they needed to make a great film after TLJ without bringing Sideous back. There are things in the TFA script that hint that it was, perhaps, at least a concept that they wanted to explore.
At this point, I honestly can't say whether or not they just had suggestions to stick to or an outline or what. It doesn't feel like they had a strong, cohesive outline. I did always wonder why Snoke didn't have sith eyes. I knew Kylo didn't because he'd never fallen completely to the dark side, but Snoke? Him being a clone would make sense, wouldn't it, in that aspect. The only problem is that it feels like it's out of left field. I'm not quite sure, either, how her being Palp's granddaughter and him being Anakin's grandson makes them a dyad. There were parts in the script of TFA about him recognizing her that were cut. That's why he says, "What girl?" when he gets the news that BB-8 escaped with a girl. But back to TROS, it's not clear whether Kylo has left Rey alone during all of the time since TLJ. But he suddenly wants her as his queen once he realizes the emperor is back. Maybe he feels that the information she has will make her more willing to turn. Maybe enough time has passed that he's not as angry with her, but it does seem a little sudden and out of nowhere. And why does he have the mask on to speak with her the first time. Vulnerability? He doesn't want her to see his real cracks? Not if he's to gain her allegiance against Palpatine, perhaps?
But oh, can we just focus on those incredible force bond scenes? Ok, I do feel cheated not to have gotten his "But I do." but those force bond scenes, so powerful that you think the scene on the downed death star is one at first. When he yanked that necklace off of her in that first scene, my husband and I both said, "Whoa!" It was incredible! And while some people didn't like the regression of their relationship, I did. It happens. He wasn't ready to be a man. And she was actually not ready to be a woman. They could not be what the other one needed in TLJ, so they had a falling out. She's angry at his actions. He was angry at her rejection but seems to have cooled off and grown up a bit.
The two of them having lightsaber fights through their bond was just phenomenal. That they can connect, touch, etc. through space and time is wild. I think there's a lot to digest in this movie because of the quick pacing, perhaps things we aren't seeing on the surface. That's been pretty consistent with all three of these films. It's hard to judge on one viewing.
Han coming back was just perfect. He came to the premier, so I'm pretty confident that he filmed those scenes. But he wasn't a ghost, like some people were saying. He was a memory. So through all of those cracks, through Leia's efforts, a memory of his father pulls him back, and it's such a beautiful echo of that same scene in TFA that was so horrific. This time, he made the right decision. It was his father's heart inside of him that pulled him back, along with the light of his mother and the light of Rey. Just lovely.
I'd like to know how he got off of that moon, though. But that transfer of the lightsaber from Rey to Ben, though. Epic!!!! I guess the knights could tell that he wasn't Kylo anymore. And when they faced the emperor together, so awesome, but so short-lived. I was disappointed that they both seemed powerless against him. The lightsabers turning his energy against him was awesome, but then he regrew his fingers like it was nothing. What?!?!?! They were both pulling a ship out of the sky earlier (amazing!) but suddenly they are nothing against him. He takes their power, so I can understand why he so easily gets tossed down into the pit, and in essence, though I was disappointed that they didn't defeat the emperor together. I can understand it a bit, since she was a Jedi channeling the knowledge and energy of the Jedi that had come before her, and he'd never become a Jedi, but it just seems a waste of his character. This should have been a bigger fight with more winning moments from Ben, in my opinion. Some people were upset that he didn't have any dialogue (except for "Ow."), but I don't think he needed it with what he had to work with. He has so much expression in his face, and it was good to see Ben and Rey communicating without words. The expressions on his face when he sees she's dead and that resolve when he knows what he's going to do and that he will die is faultless. He's perfect. At first, I was really upset to know that he doesn't get any kind of real death acknowledgement from anyone. Like he was nothing. But, I think the information of them being a dyad is pretty significant. Since I don't think there will be a movie or show or anything with it, I think it'll be carried forward in books and comics. It's the only reason they would have glossed over things as though he hadn't died, because in essence, he didn't. His life essence is in her. They formed a dyad. She's part of the natural force and he's part of the cosmic force. Because he's in her and perhaps even able to still communicate with her, he wouldn't be separated as force ghost. I think a little bit of his essence was left just to have that moment with her and then when he disappears, the rest goes into her.
It's a melancholy moment and it's something I wish they had highlighted if that's what they intended. But I didn't blubbery cry like I thought I would. I'm a big cryer, and something someone said about the dyad gave me hope. I don't think Ben Solo is gone forever physically. They did show that blood isn't everything. They made a big deal about family being more than blood. But I don't think the physical Skywalkers are gone from the universe forever. Maybe I'm wrong and they are, but it was just odd that they didn't show Ben as a force ghost. Something more is going on.
Overall, this movie rocked on the first viewing for me, and I plan to go again. I do think in the future they should never do a Star Wars trilogy with a director who writes or co-writes the script. It should be one director for all three films and should be done the Peter Jackson way if at all possible. And one writing team. Consistency is key and this trilogy suffered due to different visions and styles that did not mesh with each other very well.
I had fun, though, and that's what mattered. I got my Reylo confirmation that I'm still surprised people missed. I mean, it was so obvious to me, but then again, I do have a trained literary eye.
One last thought. Poor Hux. I think they missed an opportunity with him. I think they could have taken the movie in very interesting ways, and I think bringing Palps back without a setup that, looking back, is apparent, is messy and stubborn. It was like JJ wanted these things to happen but didn't set them up well enough, so Rian didn't carry them forward and JJ was mad and said, "I'll show you! I'm still gonna make it go the way it should have." Was Snoke supposed to be the main big bad? Well, I don't know. Why didn't he have Sith eyes?

I think if Ben Solo had survived, I would be probably 1000x happier than I am. Adam just brought so much more weight to his character that made is death so much more devastating. Adam is a juggernaut of an actor and it seems such a waste for him to be in the film for only like 5 minutes. Plus, there were so many options JJ had to continue Ben's story, his arc just seems so unfinished, sure he turned to the light but it seems so lazy to end his redemption arc with death rather than putting in the work for Ben to continue working towards redeeming himself not only to Rey but to the galaxy (which it seems that no one aside from Rey will know what he did to not only save her but to help her destroy Palpatine).

I know there are things I'm going to have problems with, and I'm pretty sure I'll need to see it more than once to really soak it all in, but that doesn't lessen my enthusiasm.

I felt like I'd been on a rollercoaster. There was so much going on. I loved the fights. Rey and Kylo/Ben's scenes were the best but the whole thing felt rushed. If they'd made it 3 hours just allowed moments to hold you instead of rushing through it, it could've been so much better. Such poignant moments you didn't get the time to feel and process. Good but a little disappointed.

I totally agree. I describe this as “sorry for my sour grapes but ROS was grape juice and I’m way more into wine. It’s a movie for kids than intellectuals. If you like space wizards and comic books and Saturday morning cartoons you will probably love this film” but for the deeper feeling audience and a lot of women, we were robbed an epic story, and given something merely “grand”

I feel weird after watching this movie because I was really enjoying it...and then Ben dies, and that left me veeeery sad. I guess the really wanted him to be a parallel to Darth Vader, but at least Anakin spent some good years in the lightside rolling in the grass, having meaninful relationships with Obi, Ahsoka and Padme; Ben was pulled to the darkside very young being horribly manipulated by Snoke/Palpatine and when he finally grows past his traumas he´s in the lightside a couple of hours and gets killed.

If there is one thing I do absolutely loved about Rise of Skywalker...it's the chemistry between the main three..., I just wish Rose had more to say and some decisions felt a bit tacked on...but other than that, I actually rank this above return of the jedi as far as being a great finale...JJ Abrams may have been too fast, but I absolutely love the energy of this film..that being said, The Last Jedi is my favorite of the three..but overall..I liked the sequel trilogy..

After one viewing here as well, I am right on track with your analysis - thanks for posting. Seeing again tonight.
Something random I'm watching for - Ben/Kylo's reactions to Rey repeated destruction of his vehicles, lol. He may have made the worst onscreen proposal since Mr. Darcy, but damn, she is a seriously bad girlfriend when it comes to his rides.
    1. Steals the shuttle from Supremacy while he is unconscious (after giving him back his lightsaber, that was nice.)
    2. Chopped his snazzy sports TIE in half (seriously, why the hell was he flying at her? Editing issue is my guess. There was some force bond conversation that ended up on cutting room floor, but because that shot was in the first trailer, JJ had to keep it in the movie, although it no longer meant anything?)
    3. Lightning-bolted his staff transport minivan thing. (I hope book reveals if Kylo knew Chewie was not on that one or not. Ben/Chewie scene was on my wishlist. Ah, well.)
    4. Stole his SECOND snazzy sports TIE leaving him stranded in the middle of the ocean so she could fly it to another ocean and blow IT up as well. (My first thought was "oh, maybe Finn will give him a ride back to shore and ... nope." Also, really wanted to see the inside of that ship. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was a two seater.)
    5. At the end, all he has left to use to get to her on Exogal to save her ungrateful ship-stealing/blowing-up self was to himself commandeer some cheapo standard issue TIE. (I had the image of Adam Driver in that tiny smart car from the zombie movie last year.)
    6. She ends up with his dad's totally cool custom classic ship at the end. At least we can assume she will love and take care of that. (Another book moment I'm hoping for - her coming across some little toy ship, or child's drawing of one somewhere on the Falcon.)
Ugh, I just needed a little bit more! A few more beats here and there for the force connections. Missed the total silence except for their breathing and voices that we had in Last Jedi. And there HAD to have originally been some dialogue between them at the end. Just such abrupt editing. I don't remember any long unbroken shots in the entire thing.
Deep breath and getting ready to watch in a open frame of mind tonight.

I feel the same. I loved it and really enjoyed my experience in the theatre, but I did want more. I was satisfied ultimately, but I wanted something with more weight. It felt rushed, which can be attributed to the editing, but I’m still happy about it.
Being a Reylo, I’m thrilled with their romance being canon, but it was almost too cheesy for me. Very Romeo and Juliet except Juliet lives. I wanted more emotion, I want her to cry for his death at least.
I loved every bit of Bendemption though. Adam Driver is amazing.

I don’t know how I feel about it. Saw it last night. It seemed like a lot of it was “we know some people didn’t like TLJ so we’re just going to rewrite and retcon pretty much all of it.” Honestly I loved the characters of Kylo/Ben and Poe in this and thought they stole the show. (Really wish Ben lived and Rey sacrificed herself to beat Palpatine and have Ben be the Skywalker that rises.) I liked Palpatine but wish they explained how he’s actually there. I think I might like it better then TLJ and TFA but honestly I need to see it again to confirm my feelings on it.

Ive just finished watching TROS. Im fresh out of the cinema and Im still under the impression of it all. I must say that before watching TFA I have never been a true, hardcore SW fan. But this ST left me speechless and immediately drew me in to this fairy tale to the point that I started digging deeper into all the plot twists of the whole saga and reading comics and novels. I agree with you that the first act of TROS is rushed up and theres a lot to take in and process and the speed doesnt allow us that. But the second and third act are mesmerizing and beautiful and have emotional strength. The music just was just perfect to set us into that final emotional blow. The end is what did it for me tho. It was full of hope and, ultimately pure love, not only on kylo and reys side. I was crying, i was full of tears, both of sadness and happiness because i got what i wanted, but just not the way i thought i would get it. This whole concept of Ben living on in Rey and Leia guiding her own son to their version of heaven, in which he is with his family, and when the time comes, Rey will be there to. Its just so powerful and beautiful and full of hope. If im honest, I was scared of not loving this film because of all the negative reviews but I ended up doing so. As for the disappointment , I think it will get better on second viewing because it will sink in by then.
I know this is a long af comment, but i really needed to let out my boiling emotions. Im really looking forward to your further TROS videos, especially after you watch it again. MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU ALWAYS

I feel like the second viewing would make it a little better since we know what's coming and we have more time to process through the fast pacing. The low key ret-cons were irritating but nevertheless I really did enjoy it. It could have been way better for sure. The story I don't mind that much. I think the pacing and editing is the part that really throws you off. You hardly get to figure out what just happened, before you are thrown into the next scene. At least Ben came back; that was the most important thing to me.

I love this film. I didn't find the beginning to be paced or edited poorly. I loved the rapidness of it. Go, go, go. For that, I was SO, SO sucked into the movie right from the start. Beside that, I think the biggest thing is humour. TLJ is a great film, but its humour all fell completely flat for me, whereas with this film, I laughed the whole way through.
Now, I wasn't happy with some of the bigger plot decisions, but that's not as important to me as the character relationships, and Rey/Finn/Poe and Rey/Kylo Ren were a joy to watch for the entire runtime. Daisy Ridley's performance was AMAZING. I wasn't happy Rose was sidelined, however. That might be the greatest disappointment for me.
For Reylos who didn't want Ben to die, consider the World Between Worlds. It's referenced in the ancient Jedi texts she owns. What if after she buries the sabers, she goes looking for an entrance to the World Between Worlds, to try and save Ben? :)
(FYI: I also love TLJ. It's my favourite Star Wars film, by far.)

  • @MrRladdu

This definitely feels like Return of the Jedi for me. A perfectly serviceable, satisfying narrative that has fun moments... but oh my God it could have been sooooooo much more. Rian really set the stage with lots of potential for a grand, exciting finale. There was really lots of potential to make a grand thematic statement about what this Skywalker Saga was all about. I feel like JJ only catered to the lowest common denominator of Star Wars fans. The best thing I can say about this movie is that John Williams delivered big time. At least we got a great musical score from this movie. I will make peace with this movie. But Return of the Jedi and even Revenge of the Sith are both way more satisfying as trilogy cappers.

I made it, I survived Episode 9. Ok I'm being dramatic. But anyway before I begin I got to say that this has been quite a week, this has been quite a week this has been quite a wild , eventful four years that never fails to have a dull moment or something to...well let's just say something to talk about even on dull, boring days [Which sometimes happened tooo often] Anyway let's jump right into this I never thought I would ever one day come out of a Star Wars film feeling like I don't have an immediate straight forward opinion but had an idea how others thought of it and got a hint of what's been most talked about even before I sat in the theater and had time to be prepared mentally for what's going to come. Rare that I do that but this time it helped. I got to say I am on a lot of people's side that think this was probably the weakest of the trilogy , I don't think it's the worst ...honestly I don't think that with any Star Wars movie there's just some that don't affect me more than others and some I have complicated feelings on. I had some very on and off thoughts about this and I think it comes from more of a place thinking that .....as much as I hate to say it but I think it would have been much better if it came out in 2020 the waiting would be excruciating that's for sure but it would have made time for a much more well thought out marketing that didn't end up as weird as it did and suffered 11th hour syndrome. I think the biggest problems to me and I know I'm not alone in this is the obvious pacing, editing I would put them together because it made the movie feel very out of place and didn't take time to slow down. And the biggest beef is arguably the character arcs from mostly everyone there wasn't enough time for them to be fleshed out and had things happen to them that made them stronger as individuals and I'm under the impression that there wasn't enough balance or time for real growth but things just happened right away and with a film that's supposed to be 2 1/2 hours it was more of a chase film within the first hour and a half of things happening and going on and not enough to slow down or take it's time. Quite frankly those were my biggest problems and I know I'm not the only one who thought of that. The movie was still beautiful to look at the visuals and effects and cinematography was on another level and uh you can make a gallery out of it. Seriously. It had it's moments of fun, and I watched some of that in the point of view of a child. I loved all the strange creatures including the horses. As far as Palpatine goes dude was absolutely next level creepy but holy cow was there too much CGI on him ...Thanos looked better than Palpatine here. Thanos looked and felt more menacing by appearance even in his moments of vulnerability where it made you care about him until he goes for the kill again. I think it would have been better if he was just a voice in the air and didn't have to show himself that's why his voice in the previews was so chilling and I would have been OK with that. Now I will very quickly address the elephant in the room .....I always knew Bendemption would happen and it did as did Reylo and it was done in a way that was so poignant sure they got aggressive with one another half way through the film but by mid way by the time we were getting to the finale I couldn't help but get some Dark Crystal vibes [Ironically I was watching the film just the other night] it was reminding a lot like the finale to that film and even parts of the TV series as we speak right now when Ben was holding Rey I can almost hear the words "Hold her to you, for she is part of you, as we all are part of each other" such powerful words and in a way he is inside a part of Rey right now. Because now they are a part of each other , now the galaxy is in a place where even though it's not exactly perfect but I can tell that there is the makings of real balance about to come into play. And to be honest with you by the time the two sun sets on tattoine showed up on screen I thought to myself as I was holding my stuffed porg and whispered to him... "This is not the end, this is really the start of a whole new beginning that can now become whatever it wants and needs to be" and now I understand why Disney really wanted to end this trilogy the way it did because look at what it could become later on and I think we can find ourselves on familiar grounds but it can be made anew somehow someway...as weird as it sounds and that being said Hope to me and I say this loosely but it actually gave me a real sense of hope that there is something more waiting to be told. I only see this film as a vision of JJ's that tried to do what needed to be done but not without risks or controversy. Reylo is definitely end game but Ben Solo to me is somewhere in another part of the galaxy and universe and right now he is waiting to have his story go on through the creativity of the fandom , the fandom in a way is helping this franchise still stand on it's own two feet and it doesn't have to settle with one interpretation we could go on to the next level of creation here and imagination and that's how I want and will see it . Anyway this was long because I only just came out a few hours ago but I came in leaving behind all the drama and distractions and just went with an open mind and let it take me and in my mind I thank the team for doing the absolute best it can but now there's a whole new world for Star Wars that can transform into something even more profound and I think next time around there will be better executions of how the story will go and what the characters will be. Episode 9 was just a lesson on how we can do better going forward but there are still some moments where I have no problem in feeling like I'm 10 years old again. And that's good enough for me. Can't wait to go again soon.

As a fan of the sequel trilogy, this film was really underwhelming. I like Star Wars for it's themes and character dynamics. That's one of the reasons why I loved TLJ.. When I personally was going through a rough year in my med school it taught me that it's okay to fail as long as we learn to get ourselves up. As for character dynamics/relationships I loved Reylo as it felt very nuanced. It did have some moments I didn't enjoy (no movie is perfect). This film was bogged down by its heavy expositions to get the characters to a certain point in the story that you didn't really care about dialogue between characters for their development. Although I teared up when Leia called out for Ben. Left the theatre disappointed but not sad cuz I'm always going to be a SW fan. Thank you for the review, loved your breakdown of Kylo and Luke's duel.

I liked the film overall. My problem was that a lot of the film just felt rushed and didn't take time to explain the story. My daughter even heard me say "What!?" when he said she was the granddaughter of Palpatine. I guess I voiced that too loud so I am sure others heard it as well if she did 2 seats away. Anyway, most of my problem with the movie was the jumping around quickly. I mean, for example, when Rey returns in the X wing, you see it land, the hatch opens and you see her, then she is almost by BB8 on the ground. They didn't seem to have enough time to show her getting out of the fighter and cut it for run time reducing. There was a ton of that all over the movie. Rey and Ben were my favorite parts of the movie. Next would be the start when they had some good jokes with the group. I didn't hate the film, it was enjoyable enough, just not my favorite and definitely the worst of the sequels to me.

The only thing I don't like is the granddaughter thing. Because that totally undermines the whole you don't have to be born into a bloodline message. Everything else was alright considering the circumstances. It was not a good film but definitely some good Star Wars. Very cool, fast, fun, right look and feel, good fan service etc. They definitely need to explain Palpatine's return in the novelization. I want some closure. I want to know what's to stop him from just coming back again
