Building A Chameleon Sailing Dinghy | Pintles & Gudgeons #5
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 жов 2024
- In this vlog, I install the pintles and gudgeons that hold the rudder onto the transom of the chameleon sailing dinghy.
After that I talk a lot. Even more than usual, it seems. I don't know why this episode is so chock full of blabbering, but it is.
Then I epoxy some stuff.
Oh! I apply paint for the first time - so that's kinda exciting.
Finally, I show you how to shred on a bubble level.
You'll see. ;)
Thanks for watching!!

On the radio was Wes from Wicked Salty. Love watching the build!
Yep! Nicely done.
Wicked Salty man! Nice job!
That's it. :)
Wes from Wicked Salty. Nice job on boat.
Bingo!
Excellent job Ben. I would make the rudder pivot up so you can sail in shallow waters when exploring
I thought about it, but instead chose to focus on simplicity.
Maybe on the next dinghy. :)
I've been following quite a few sailing / boat maintenance channels. Yours has become one of the most entertaining for me. Good job))))Currently I'm reading The cost conscious cruiser and it looks like you're following their pattern where your boat is your "business card" so to speak. Way to go Ben 😉
Well thanks very much for saying that. :)
Happy to hear that you're enjoying the dinghy series.
You know, I met Lin not that long ago.
You might also like "Voyaging On A Small Income" by Annie Hill.
They talk about the Chameleon in that book a bit as well.
Keep watching. ;)
Wow, what a great a job you are doing! I'm thoroughly enjoying watching you complete this project; really don't want the video to stop since I'm so anxious to see the finished boat. It sure is impressive so far.....good luck! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you're enjoying the series.
At first, I thought it would be a 3 part series.
Then I was aiming for 7.
Now, it's looking like it may be an 8 part series.
So the good news is that you've still got a few videos to go before it's over.
Then... you can start back over form the beginning. ;)
You have really done a good job on the construction and finish.
Cool editing Benny baby!
I am really impressed with your perseverance and workmanship, Ben! If you mixed milled glass in the epoxy for the bonding of those rudder hinges and covered by glass cloth, I doubt you'll need to also install bolts. This project has been enjoyable to watch!
Yep! Those screws will be more for aesthetics than anything.
It's all in the details
Being from Alabama ,I've met and "liked" several Georgia girls. However ,I never meet a Georgia boy that impressed me the way you do. I salute you sir ,for your skill and resolve, taste in music , and sense of humor. By now I would have burned the pieces ,and made up a lie to blame on the neighbor's kids!
Well, thanks for saying that, Mike.
I really appreciate that. :)
Ben, I'm just throwing it out, the uke track you put out for Joel was golden. Why have you never shared such skill before?
I have many hidden skills that the world is not ready for.
I figure that I can gradually introduce them - otherwise zoos, sideshows, and Area 51 may take notice.
Awesome. Was waiting to hear some RATT or KROKUS.
What the heck is Krokus?
Sailboat Story Come on Ben...With your expertise in music I thought for sure you like Krokus. "Screaming in the Night "
I've not heard of them, but I just looked that up.
Sounds soooo good.
Thanks for that.
Wicked Salty in the background, Wes n fact...yes I can name that channel. Keep on keeping on, been following your progress on Facebook!!!
It's been a fun project to follow! Looking forward to splash!
Always great. Keep it up
If I could give you 20 thumbs up I would!!! Bubble level shred was outstanding!
Thanks for sharing & more bubble level please. ;)
Very few people invest the time necessary to master playing a bubble level.
Good thing I'm no slacker.
Sure am enjoying watching you build this! Enjoying your choice of music, too! Party on, Garth!!!!! :-)
Good paint
Spectacular. Waiting for each video in this series is like waiting for Christmas.
Thanks, Paul.
What a very nice thing to hear. ;)
Glad you'r enjoying the series.
Not sure of the choice of paint but what the heck not. Love your hard work too Ben. And love the ending 😏. Thanks and best from HKG
So you're saying Tambi weighs more than you and the outboard. Wish you all the best Ben 😂
The rudder and the tiller looks very smart, so far my favorite detail.
I give you massive thumbs up for the choice of paint, even if it is not the best out there, WTF give it a go. The "marine grade" stuff is marked up to silly levels.
And, some air guitar music while working is a must.
Thanks very much for that.
That's pretty much my thoughts on it as well.
Why the heck not.
It it works, GREAT.
If not, ahh well - at least I tried something different.
I kinda have a hunch that it might work out ok for my uses, but I won't be disappointed if it doesn't.
I hope all the practice I've been putting into the bubble level pays off.
Wicked salty playing in the background
Yep, that's it!
Going to look great after the paint
Hi there - For the daggerboard holes, you can add short pieces of PVC pipe to thread your ropes through
Wicked Salty!
Yes, indeed. :)
I'm enjoying watching your build as I build my own Passagemaker dinghy. I would seriously consider installing through-bolts through those gudgeons.
That's a nice dink.
Even though they're epoxied in?
Yes. A screw can't handle nearly the loads in any direction that a through bolt can. Also, properly tightened, a through bolt shares the shear load with the plywood, which is a really cool phenomenon. You've already done the hard part with the drill/fill/drill part. Why not ensure success underway cheaply and easily with a simple bolt?
I could.
It doesn’t seem likes there’s much load on the rudder.
Now, the oarlocks - those seems like they really get worked hard.
When you're sculling the boat in light or no wind, you'll basically be slamming the rudder back and forth for quite a while. The hydrodynamic forces on something like that shouldn't be underestimated. Your choice. Good luck!
Loving the boat it’s coming on nice well done 👍🏻
Always a riot & full of fun...Keep it up !!
Thanks! I really like that little shaka picture.
Wicked Salty in the background. Last video of their's that I've seen was when they had bought the Catalina. If they've put out another since, I missed it with my busy life.
I don't think they have.
Last I heard, they're kinda waiting on the weather to warm a little before they do anything else.
Understandable. It seems like it's been a pretty tough winter up North.
Yeah, white boy, that funky bubble level riff is pretty ... metal.
I also love the music choices - perfect. Catching up to current videos after your channel was mentioned by.... Zingaro
I think James and I may be long lost brothers.
What do you think?
Agree that you and James have equal ability to construct a kickass sailboat, offer good commentary and have good taste in music. Whether or not you have the ability to sail to exotic places in a boat held together with duct tape and skill while attracting numerous large breasted woman.....has yet to be determined.
After reading this conversation, I went and checked out the channel. That guy barely has a boat left!
One rudder out of two, no sails, down one engine.......
And the non-PortBote doesn't look like much of a plan B.
But there were two beautiful ladies on the boat! LOL
Ken Walter...I once loved Zingaro... now I'm not sure. Start at the first episode and watch from there.... very cool beginnings... and amazing cool women who come and go from the boat. An absolutely guys-guy channel.... and it kind of changed with the addition of the current....um ....girl. Just not my cup of tea. And fun of the channel diminished considerably. But James is a cool guy and hopefully will turn things around.
I honestly view most sailings channels to learn and to see the amazing places that I'll likely never get to, or go diving. Honestly Sailboat Story, I love the humor and family dynamic. Plus I love hands on people! If you can't fix it, you shouldn't leave the dock.
I don't think I will ever circumnavigate. Not going to say I never will! But the Bahamas is something for me to plan for and achievable.
I'll definitely check out a few more of James's videos.
I think he has already taught me to sell my Porta-bote! That thing is a wreck!!
You play a killer bubble level! I once capsized a 16 foot Snipe and the rudder cane off and sank to the deep. Maybe safety line attaching the rudder to the boat would be a good thing? The dagger board too. Just sayin'.
Between the front seat, back seat, filler piece, daggerboard, rudder & tiller - it'd be a yard sale if it capsizes.
*When it capsizes.
Play that funky music, WHITE BOY!!!!! Brings back my karaoke days...
I have watched a lot of your stuff and always find it interesting and your music quite good. I know it has been years since you did your Chameleon but can you tell me where to source rudder pintles and gudgeons? Thanks!!
I have limited access to internet and so must make a digital download to watch later (it's complicated). Parts #1 & #5 worked but parts 2, 3 & 4 won't download ~ did you do something different with them and can you change those 3 Eps or are you going to do a Full length version start to finish at the end. I would really appeciate the full length version , but Hey I'm just weird . Thanks for sharing your talents with us ''''wish we could do that ''' group of viewers . Thanks and Blessing , Mike out
Mike, I'd imagine that it probably has something to do with the music playing in the background.
Not sure though.
Email me at sailboatstory@gmail.com and I'll figure something out for you.
Frikkin awesome!!!
OK, OK, time for a confession: I've watched your channel since the beginning. Your wife seems like a very nice woman, good mother, a bit reticent at times, but now into the sailing thing 100%. Your daughter is just a wonderful young girl, how lucky you are. I had you written off as a total whack job, BUT your skills, perseverance and growth as a videographer convince me I was wrong about the wacky part. I admire you and your family, please keep on sharing your ventures with us.
Thanks, but you're wrong about the wacky part. ;)
I couldnt say it any better - DITTO THAT !
Thanks for the shoutout. I'm glad to see the sail being put to good use.The dinghy is coming along well and it looks like a quality build. I can't wait to see Molly sailing it around the anchorage in The Bahamas. We are heading to our boat in Virginia in less than a week to start our summer cruise to Maine and Nova Scotia. Hopefully we will catch up to you guys sometime next Fall or Winter. Are you going to the Spring Annapolis Boat Show? Keep up the good work, Ed on SV Contigo
We've considered going to the Sprig show, but haven't decided yet.
Big focus is the house.
Really ready to get that off our plate.
Good luck selling the house.
Another good video. What is the length and width the dinghy before and after nesting?
Sure.
That and much more detail about the design can be found here -
duckworksmagazine.com/04/s/designs/greene/cham/
Not sure if I missed it along the way, but did you have a name for the dinghy? Do you have any in mind? Maybe a contest submitting suggestions and then you guys pick a winner for a small prize or maybe they get their name painted inside the boat somewhere in small letters? Just a way to include the audience. Oh!, and BTW the boat is really looking great!! Although we sure miss Molly and Tamby! Another great video!
Ben , love your music choices! Look like it's getting heavier......? I hope that gloss latex works out for you , I found it to be quite soft paint but maybe it's improved now , and it was a real bug**r to flow out a nice glossy coat.maybe the flat would be better, and easy touch up!
I love the thought of Molly solo sailing around the anchorages making friends and getting into trouble!
A great way to grow up!
Cheers Warren.
Yeah, taking a shot on that paint.
I did a lot of research and I was surprised to find a really strong base of people who swear by the stuff.
It's odd. It is on the soft side, but it's also very impressive how well the stuff holds onto the substrate.
Actually quite tough to wash off my hands and brush when it was given a chance to dry a bit.
We'll see though.
I'm a bit skeptical myself, but I'm always drawn to experimenting with solutions that are odd and unpopular.
Wes from WickedSalty :)
you rock!
You shouldn't need a rope handle on the daggerboard, it's a nice touch though. Normally they float just a bit in the slot and there's almost no way for it to fall through unless horrible things are already happening.
Was that Wicked Salty I heard in you garage !
Why, yes it was. :)
I thought you were joking when you started talking about the paint like when you said you were going to use Behr wall paint as bottom paint... Lol I hope it works out. Excited to see how it holds up. Really thinking we may build one of these for our E32.
Build it.
Sometime do a little research on using latex paint on boats.
It's very interesting stuff.
Very contrary to what most folks would do, I admit, but I'm a very contrary kinda person.
I might have chosen hardware store polyurethane paint instead, probably a little tougher and a similar price. Also sandable so you could repair a ding.
We'll see. I kinda like experimenting.
It's certainly sandable.
I've already done some work on painted areas.
It's surprising how well it adheres and also comes off predictably with a sander.
I like how it behaves thus far.
Sorry, I was unclear. By "sandable" I mean wet-sanding to get a really smooth finish after application. After a ding repair you could also wet sand and blend. I am not sure a latex can do that as it is softer.
But I am splitting hairs.
No it's ok. One thing I noticed -
I sanded it lightly with 220 paper between coats.
I noticed that it got super smooth, but also lost it's gloss.
I changed to 120 paper for more "tooth" because of this.
Maybe wet sanding with 220 would make it smooth but keep it's gloss?
I'm kinda curious now.
Love the soundtrack :) Alestorm there in the end?
That’s right!
You definitely need 2 more connection points on the lower parts of the 2 parts next to the dagger box, otherwise it will break apart, because your wait will make the front and the back of the dinghy going up. If is not connected in 4 points it will brake apart.
I suppose I’d have to disagree solely on the fact that throughout the last couple seasons of hard use as our cruising tender there has been no evidence at all suggesting that the dinghy will break apart. Design-wise, putting additional connection points down low would be a bad idea because those points would be below the water line. It may be interesting to know that the original plans only called for 2 connection points, but I added an additional 2 for extra strength.
I laughed at this part Ben, 06:32 you are definitely not going to make this part crooked, after going through the previous dagger board slot incident! :-)
NO. I'm done building crooked stuff.
My new rule is:
"Measure 18 times, Check Level 27 times, Measure another 3 Times, Get 2nd Opinion, CUT ONCE."
How do the gudgeons decide which pintle with whom they will mate? The ones who have the best brass? *bada-bing, bada-boom*
BahDuumBAH!
#73 needs to stay hidden...LOL just kidding!
Hate to mention this now after you are done, but it is customary to coat bare wood with unthickened epoxy first as the thicken stuff does not bond as well. But hey what the heck, to late now. The dingy will probably fall apart in 50 years?
Yep. I started doing just that early in the build.
The pintles had a coat before the thickened stuff went on, just cut that out.
If you look close, you can see that bare wood get darker magically right before I mix the thickened stuff.
Wicked Salty is the channel in the background
Wow, nicely done!
Not just anyone can name a channel by sound alone, much less an early episode.
Kudos, congrats, and other celebratory verbiage. ;) -B
Sailboat Story what can I say, I'm a proper sailing nut :D
I noticed when rudder and tiller were in place the tiller hung down and rubbed on transom. You could place a strip of plastic on the top of the transom to prevent wear as well as lift the tiller up a bit. Just saying.
Good eye. I've laced a piece of leather around the tiller at that point.
Looks pretty good too!
Used it on my shrimp boats
Is that exterior grade plywood too?
It is. BCX.
Ben what kind of knife was that at 11:57 that you used?
CRKT M16-04 w/ unserrated tanto blade.
Excellent knife. I've had it for probably 15 years.
Where does the rod holder go
I'll admit that I'm a little slow to catch on sometimes, but I think I figured out why you are building this little dingy. It is because you are working on honing your ship building skills before you start on Sand Flea 2, isn't it!
Please fill us in on some details of the new vessel.
Sure. She'll be a 100" 5 masted schooner built of Home Depot plywood.
Sailboat Story that is great! Hey just an idea for you. It's just kinda what I do. Start a different UA-cam channel for the build and invite your fans to come help you build it! It could be something like, "The wood boat the Internet built." Kinda has a nice ring to it, right?
I could taste the glue to make sure it's mixed properly. Not bragging but I've got experience from way back!
You would travel here and help me build another one?
Sailboat Story Well I can't, but build it & they will come!
Just look how SV Seeker is coming along.
All kidding aside, I think the Sand Flea has proven to be a great boat and really enjoyed watching your boat buying. You kept your emotions out of it & were patient.
Just think of all the fun comments you would get if you built a 100' boat telling you everything you were doing wrong!
If it was me, I'd use Lowes plywood though. :-)
Cmon man! I need you to lead the way. I also need you to fund the project, provide all the tools, and do all the work.
Whadayasay?
Ok, now I know where u got the sail from haha, finally. Did u just cut the top off it?
No.
i have an idea for your mast, look around craigslist for an old sailboard or windsurfer, i had one with a carbon fiber mast with a pivitol base so you could lay the mast down when not in use.
Thanks for the idea. ;)
Or a laser, sunfish, or opti rig
sounded like wes from Wicked Salty
What? You couldn't find that old classic song " Build that Chameleon Sailing Dinghy white boy?" That would have worked so well! Great vid but...will she float?
Dang, I really missed out on that music match.
SHOOT!
You are 80% done? By the "Pareto Principle", the last 20% of the work will take 80% of the overall time. So, according to that idea, you've only put in 20% of the necessary time. I'm happy because I get to watch more build videos. ^_^
It's a brave man who refers to his wife as ballast and then be willing to fall asleep in the same house.
Context - sheesh. Ballast is a term of endearment in this particular case.
真棒👍。
I'm quite interested in building this dingy. Were you able to order online? All I can find is a snail-mail address.
Snail mail is the only way to get them.
I do have an email address to contact the designer though: dtgreenebda@icloud.com .
Sailboat Story ordered the plans today. Thanks for your reply. Im enjoying your build videos!
Awesome.
Heck, I may build another one someday.
Do you plan to share your build progress on Facebook or anywhere else?
Plan on using it as a dingy when I do America's Great Loop. I am going to build the sailing version. I've built a number of kayaks and canoes using stitch and glue method so I'm very familiar with the process. I'm a long time photographer but haven't done much video in 20 years or so. I'll give it a whirl and try not to embarrass myself.
Thanks for your interest!!
Nice looking sail Ed donated! What would you estimate this dingy will weigh? Exact same paint I used in the inside of Chak Matay. Was hoping it would smash the bubble leveler at the end!
The specs say 100lbs, but I think that's a bit optimistic.
I'm guessing it'll be more like 120lbs.
By it I meant you would smash it.
HA! That would have been awesome.
Hmm interested to see if you find a spot for her on the Sandflee.
I took a bunch of measurements before buying the plans.
It should fit on the foredeck, under the boom, or in the davits.
I hope.
It sounded like Wes from wicked salty
T'was.
Nice job!
FASCO Epoxy is a far better choice than Rustoleum... and, your craftsmanship is well-deserving of a better finish.
After years of hard use, to a degree of which the majority of dinghies will never experience, the finish has held up extraordinarily well. No blisters, peeling, flaking, or even color degradation. The finish has held up very well despite frequent hauling, towing, assembly, disassembly, beaching, scraping, etc. All evidence would suggest my choice of finish was a good one.
You are so metal. :-)
Yes.
Wicked salty
Ben, while reading bubbles in the tub, "I see a Wharram Cat in your future".
I'm a big fan of those.
Now, are you a certified bubble reader or is that just a hobby?
Just trying to legitimize your findings a bit.
I had beans!
Play some Little Feat and my my life complete!😎😎
Is it the that the final 20% of the project takes 80% of the time to complete?
It does feel that way.
Killer!
I know they make MARINE paint. Maybe because of environmental issues. Just a thought. I am not a environmental schitzoid but I also believe the Marine paint handles salt better and has some other unique qualities. Its also much more $$$ expensive. Personally I would Rhino coat the bottom, the stuff they spray on truck beds. PS. if you bottled up your talent just on making boats and playing a great AIR GUITAR, you could make a whole other channel complete just with that. He He He. I know your multitalented, but as my father told me because I was similar to yourself. He did say just pick just ONE THING and be the best at it, and wealth / happiness will come your way. Picking just one thing was just too hard for me to do, I still turned out alright, maybe not the WEALTHY part, but the happiness is abundant. So I guess either way works :)
That was wicked salty in background? Sounded like Wes
Yep. ;)
Your going to regret using a latex paint. Good luck and thumbs up for sharing!
Doubtful.
I don't do regret.
I believe that's a baritone bubble level.
I'm impressed!
I didn't take you as a connoisseur of fine musical instruments.
I am kind of a level-headed fellow.
I'm about a half-bubble off plumb.
So you claim...
Jakfilm Stratocaster....
Tula?
Close. Guess again.
Sailboat Story gotta be Delos then.
Negative. Haven’t watched them for over a year.
Boy it sounds familiar. Gonna drive me nuts. Let’s see....
I give up. I watch delos, abandon comfort and you. Everyone else is spotty. I have noticed zingaro and you going back and forth.. I resisted him but I fear he has crept into my heart.... Definitely love the family aspect of your vids.
Good job apart from your paint choice! You should really use a two pack epoxy primer followed by 2 coats of a two pack top coat.
The paint choice is far more important than the dagger board being 1 millimetre out!! If you get my drift 😊👍
don't forget to put a rudder stop or you rudder will come off while sailing, believe me... not good!
Where's the stop go?
on the fwd edge of the rudder, a piece of spring steel against the bottom of the gudgeon to keep the rudder from floating up and out. try googling "rudder stopper".
My level plays a different tune and it usually starts with OH SHT
HA. That's funny.
Only marine paint! That's latex.
I disagree. Having used the dinghy now for months, dragging it up sandy beaches, towing it for hundreds of miles, and it spending weeks in the water - I can report that my latex paint selection has held up flawlessly.
No peeling, blisters, or discoloration of any kind.
Very happy with my unorthodox paint choice.
What was wrong with the inflatable dink? Not that that isn't a very nice dinghy.
Nothing. It's a good one.
Just wanted one that would row and sail.
dooode you are too young to play Wild Cherry: Play that funky music white boy
too late, but I believe all rudders should have one pintle longer than the other, so you can line up one, then the other
and it helps that one has a hole, in the end, to put a pin in it so the rudder doesn't come out
Tambi is going to get a wet bum sitting on that dagger board infill as water will splash up there! You should have something to hold the infill in place and also the dagger board as it will float up. These are lessons learned from a mirror dinghy built back on the 1970s here in the UK
Done and done, fellas. Those potential issues have preemptively been addressed.
I told you - I'm a self-proclaimed naval architect. ;)
Thanks for the insights.
I'm still curious what sound Tambi would produce if a cold jet of water shot upwards from below her fanny.
lol you want to be a little bit careful with you balancing the load comments...
I realized that after the fact. DOH!
You just saved $150 on a sail and yet you then cheap out on buying crappy, home interior paint! You put so many hours into building this cool little boat that you should have purchased a proper a marine Epoxy paint....... Disappointed
It's held up perfectly through 2 seasons of hard use. Paint still looks brand new, actually. Some folks only know what they've been told and are terrified to do anything outside of the status quo. I guess I'm just different.
