I’m 53 and have a frozen shoulder. This has helped me so, so much. You are an extraordinary teacher, and I really appreciate how you break the stroke down so clearly.
@@DarkHorseRowing a year later, and a similar comment (though I am 52) but looking for exercise that won't hurt my frozen shoulder, and the treadmill has been too hard on the joints from a previous injury. Loved this workout, looking forward to following along with more.
Excellent. I haven't rowed in about 10 years as I've been mountain/trail running, but had a serious injury last December. I'm doing these drills twice a day - even though I so want to just get on with the workouts, I know this is going to pay dividends, so I'm learning my new Concept 2 rower and techniques with you before I get on to the workouts. I don't know if I'll ever be able to run again, so this is a new phase in my life and so far I know I'm making the right choice. Thanks so much for doing these beginner skills and drills!
I've been on the water before and rowed crew in a novice program for a few years and I love it. My boat house has been closed the entire pandemic, This is an awesome video to go back to the basics and work on the pick drill again Thank you so much
Bought my Concept2 Model D a couple of weeks ago and have been learning and rowing with your videos since. First, THANK YOU for these videos! You're an awesome coach. I had never rowed before, and I feel like I'm starting to figure it out. I love the row along videos whether drills, intervals or catch the coach.
I've been rowing about 8 weeks now (following the British Rowing Beginners Plan) and I've been starting the sessions by following this video as a warm up, it's been a great help.
Thank You. For years I was just randomly rowing at the gym. This year I started taking rowing classes and was really loving it. I only got in 3 good classes before COVID-19 shut everything down. I bought my own water rower and I’m starting over. This video is invaluable and amazingly soothing. 🙏🏾
Our daughter gave us a Concept 2 and suggested this video as the best way to get started. She was right! What looked to be a complicated movement (and un-natural as you point out) became easy to perform with this brief, precise, workout.I intend to repeat this for about a week before I begin to set my own times and goals. Thanks so much for getting me started in the right way!
I looked for this mechanics workout. I’m relearning the proper techniques. I will be doing this particular video until . . . I can do an actual workout. I’ll be working on breathing too to make it through a workout. I look forward to the day I can row a 30 minute beginner’s workout. Thank you. I love learning from you.
I'm new to this just bought a water rower and joined a gym in central London UK big up to them. However I'm here to fine tune my technique which is brilliant this is the first time I've done this class. It definitely won't be the last as it's not an easy technique well to me anyway until I improve I guess.
I like how the notification came up for this video when I was doing a 4X2000M/5:00R row, because I've been looking for a good warmup drill that I can use a couple times a week for practicing technique, thanks Shane
This warm up helps me so much to learn the right movements and to perform better for the 2nd set of next 20 minutes I follow along with you. Thanks for making this great video!!
I just did this workout and it felt amazing! Usually our fly wheel tension is set at 3 but I noticed while rowing that it was set at 5. It STILL felt amazing, smooth and easy! YAY! FUN! Thank you!
Helpful, clear and inspirational. Thank you. Slowing down and focussing on one stroke at a time. Really looking forward to getting on the machine this evening 🙂
If I had a magic genie my first wish would be for you to be my personal rowing instructor! I've been trying to get past the awkward phase of my new water rower for about a month. The simplicity of this video helped tremendously. For me - someone not naturally athletic, getting the hang of rowing has been a challenge. Please let me know of any other videos for newbies on your channel. Until I get my magic lamp i'll stay tuned in!
A fantastic breakdown of the components and linking of the stroke! I've watched this video a dozen or more times over the past few months and have learn something new every time I watch it! Of my three or four ergs/wk, this 10 min piece is my warm-up at least twice. Thank you DH!!!
I'll be damned! Pulled it apart, put it back together correctly (mostly). Ha! Knee injuries led me here. Feels like I shoulda been here so long ago! Thank you Shane!
Brilliant, just bought a JJL and needed a video to give me a foundation in technique before I trained my body to do it all wrong! Will use this for a couple of weeks and revisit after that, no doubt. Really helpful, thanks.
I am very grateful for your videos, really like the clarity and focus on technique. I am at the beginning of my journey, but am already looking forward to being able to cope with your more advanced training sessions. Thanks again!
I love this drill workout. As a beginner rower helps me learn the fundamental of rowing. It's an all in one drill workout and the follow along makes it invaluable. Thanks so much for all the awesome rowing videos. 5 Star!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Hey Shane. Really appreciating the pick drills as a newbie. Particularly this one (I'm doing the last 4 mins as another interval). Cheers, Rich in Melbourne, Australia.
Just completed this. I already love the rower, but this drill was amazing, as no one ever really taught me the breakdown of steps. I apparently need to break a couple of bad habits. Keep up the great content.
Love the message and feel it in my soul. I am a dark horse!!! Thank you for your videos. I'm new to rowing so this video is fundamental in my success. l can't thank you enough!.
This was awesome, Shane, thank you so much! I just joined Melaleuca's Rowing Club and this training was very valuable - I will do this every day before my next workout!
I'm new to rowing and appreciate that you are teaching basic mechanics. One thing. When bending my knees on return, is it a bad technique to have my knees outside my arms?
I'm very new at this. What is "darkhorse"? I love rowing and it makes me feel good. I am looking forward to following along with this triaining in a few hours. :-) Thanks.
Omg Shane, I use this video every week, several times a week for the last year and today is the first day I’ve noticed you had bare feet! I feel so un observant! I paid attention to your drills though😂
Helpful video. Will try the leg drill especially. Just need to convince myself to do it. It's so boring so I tend to skip warming up, doing drills etc. My technique needs work I'm pretty sure. I have experienced a lot of backpain for the last two weeks. It has really affected my life quality. Could be it's the rowing that has brought it on. I tend to use the arms a bit early during the stroke. I see the most power and best looking power curve rowing that way. I guess though that the back takes a beating when you are pulling early with the arms without being fully leaned back first? Basically with arms early I get for example the same splits using 16 strokes per minute as when I row 20 or so if I use the arms only at the end of stroke after I have leaned back. Guess that shows my technique is bad.
Had my Concept II for 2 month and started following dark horse after watching your maintenance video. This 101 is very help full, second week trying accomplish the summer dog day challenge. Need some tips on how to do the last week which is 40k mts. Any advise? Thanks for all your time explaining things to the newbies.
Thanks Shane! Concept 2 arrived last week as my retirement prezzie to me :) I'm in regional Queensland, Australia so we're very lucky so far in terms of CV-19 lockdown. I've been watching your videos in anticipation of the machine's arrival (ordered March 2020) and this is absolutely brilliant. I've run through this drill twice a day for last week and can feel some sort of sequence imprinting. As I'm short (5'9"), old (59) and fat (95kg), I was wondering if you've got a tip to get around the belly induced restriction as I move forward to the catch from the one o'clock position? Cheers. All the best from Oz.
I am loving this! First time really erging today, and I am really excited to start with proper technique. I googled some other CrossFit bro and it looked so jerky and awful! I wanna be smoooooth! 😆
Okay that was good. I’m very new to the Concept2, just got it a few weeks ago. Two days workout at 10 minutes each day and bam, I’m hurt. Lower left side of my back and left quad. Cannot hardly walk. Dr put me on a muscle relaxer. What could I have done wrong. Oh yea, I’m 81.
This was a HUGE help to me - thanks! I've been doing this 10min video followed by 10min just straight rowing trying to keep the form. When/how do I work on power? Will that come with consistency/time or do I need to add separate strength training for that and then just keep at it until it starts to show itself on the rower? I'm having a blast and feeling good ... but feel pretty whimpy.
Just got an a1 water rowing machine and did this drill twice. Feels good however I don’t feel my legs are pushing hard enough but arms are. Any pointers?
no matter what, i feel like i’m using my back too much in the drive. pushing hard with my legs, holding the handle out, there’s naturally tension and i feel like i have to use my back. i think some say to brace stomach muscles, but that seems difficult if not impossible to do through the whole drill.
I have been working on the technical aspect of rowing, since I received my Concept 2 Rower about two weeks ago. I will sign up the program next month on your website for sure. Thank you for the instructions and your time on making these videos.
I've been rowing over 2 years and I know I open my hips too early swinging my back the same time I push with the legs. I find it a hard habit to break, frustrating!
I am new to rowing. My gym has the CONCEPT 2 rowing machine. I have been following your beginner basics video and the problem I have encountered is breathing. When I inhale/exhale, the back of my throat and roof of my mouth become extremely dry, after four minutes. I need to stop to take a drink of water. Help! What am I doing wrong?
I have a funny picture of Jean luc Picard on my garage door where I’ve put the word ENGAGE! above him so I can look at it to remember to engage those legs and keep the sequence going
Going to do this drill when I get off work, hopefully it’ll help me figure out what I’m doing wrong, and what’s causing me lower back pain every session.
Ok, I really need to practice that Arms Away. All this time, the only way I've been able to prevent my hips and toes pulling me forward is by ... not strapping in.
It's well worth the practice. Practice pressing the legs to extension then being patient as the arms move without the rest of the body. Patience is key here.
I'm using this pick drill as a warmup. Thank you, it's great.
I’m 53 and have a frozen shoulder. This has helped me so, so much. You are an extraordinary teacher, and I really appreciate how you break the stroke down so clearly.

Yes it was good - first time I have seen the drill with legs and hips, but leaving arms straight. Very helpful

Thank you for this! I struggle with rowing but this breakdown of technique surely helps a lot! Appreciate it.

love the pause and think, it makes every micro movement more noticable and fine tunable.
