Cloud Atlas is an unfilmable book, so of course someone filmed it. And it's beautiful and aspirational and messy and disjointed and... well... some folks think it's a masterpiece. We just counted the sins, man.
Next week: '90s animation & early-aughts comedy sins.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

I contest but one thing: being able to be coerced is an expression of free will. Machines cannot be convinced to behave against their programming, changing your mind with or without outside influence is something humans do

The roman numerals (10:19) MMLXII are not 2012 they are 2062 and rambling around a sin while being this wrong on such basic thing deserves a MEGA-sin back to you, and the US educational system.

I absolutely adored this movie. Even when other people couldn’t stand it or left I stayed. And I watched it multiple times. The cloud atlas song still gives me chills.
Same. Fell asleep first 2 watches tho! xD
This is my favorite movie to this day, and I still listen to the soundtrack almost daily. I understand why it's not for everyone, but it hits just right for me
You're into some weird shit dude and it's coming from a furry.
I’m going to watch it tonight for the first time after seeing this video and your recommendation
@@twinkieman237 So, let us know if you enjoyed it or if it was one of the most boring movies you've even seen ?!
Because for me, it was the latter. We got the Dvd for 1$, sold it back for 1$. it was worthless.
10:17 The roman numerals MMLXII mean 2062, not 2012. So he had 50 years to finally make it into a movie - I think that is long enough.
Lol true
I noticed that too!
*When cinemasins needs 14 seconds of logos: you have become the very thing you swore to destroy!!!
Hello there!
It's like playing a favorite song but before you get to enjoy it, you have to sit through some filler, that some studio executive decided that this, was what the song was missing.
Right?! Well said!

@@nicharold6024 Yes, because the people who put all the money in are such a-holes for wanting their names on the thing. Right?! 🤦🏽♂️
I worked in the place in Glasgow that they recorded the body being thrown into the alley by Tom Hanks, and they needed access to the building out of hours. As one of the two keyholders, we flipped a coin and I had to work late that night so they could light the building from within, although they never told us what they were doing.
Was working away at around 11pm, when I saw the rubber body getting dropped from above. All I saw was a body tumbling past the window as I glimpsed up, rushed to see what the hell had happened as I thought it could have been a stunt man.
The exact spot they show the body as having fell, was outside the fire door where all the smokers would go for their smoke breaks, so the movie was quite the subject of conversation for a while.
Nice!
So your story is: they shot a movie at your work and you had to work late? And that was talked about for quite a while after? Killer story.
@@evilsWa Damn, you harsh
Excellent (in retrospect) connection. No wish for harm but lots of potential if done w/o informing the breakers.

I don't know, I still like it. Probably because I read the book first, so every storyline is clear to me. The novel is great, David Mitchell is an absolute genius, and this film just hints at the book for three hours, also starring great actors. I'm ok with that.
Most of the people who hate on this film are illiterate and low in emotional intelligence
Cinemas Sins: “She’s speaking Mandarin.”
Me: cries in Korean
*Ding!* Glad I'm not the only one who caught that :)
I caught that too! In both the book and movie, the Sonmi-451 story is in South Korea. Only the name of the city they’re in is different when talking about the location.

There IS a method to the madness, the parallels are incredible and the storyboard team is full of geniuses for figuring out how to cut from one scene to another.
The book isn't massive at all. And it makes more sense for the movie not to separate the storylines, so you have climaxes happening st the same time.
Climaxes happening at the same time is what I requested from my boyfriend in college.
@@jamesdmack HAAAA! 😂
I think matching the climaxes up cinematically didn’t work. Each story had different pacing and using the birthmarks helped you keep track of characters (as well as using the same actors). The editing is what destroyed this amazing film

my favorite movie in many years. the way it moves from story to story is similar to how inspiration moves from idea to idea
Normally by the end of a Cinema Sins on a movie I haven't seen, I can about figure the plot out.
This one is still a mystery even after a 24min episode
It's one of my favorite movies but honestly, it took me like 2 full watches of the movie to figure it out so :D you're fine
@@leaare I watched it twice and still cant figure it out. I should go read the book
There isn't one story. They are 6 stories that take place in 6 different time periods in 5 different centuries. The idea is that little things can affect the future. It's confusing because the movie tries to get you to pay attention for subtle clues that connect the stories. But it distracts us by using the same actors for different characters using makeups. For example, Doona Bae portrayed a Korean character in 1 story, a Mexican woman in another, and a white person in another. Halle Berry were under different makeup to play Native American, black, white, and Indian characters. etc. You have to watch the movie a second time once your mind is over its curiosity of who's who.
@@elsonlam They used the same actors because they're actually the same people (souls), they're being reincarnated and there's so many hints and mentions of this throughout the movie (watch this if you're still confused it's so well put and beautifully explained everything here : watch?v=DPDKJYrCFlI )
@@SirBroodAlot You missed my point. I explained that the reason it was confusing is because it was distracting. The back of my brain was busy figuring out which actor is under the makeups.
This movie desperately needs a bonus round where you edit together all of the weird words.... "old'uns", "true true"....

You're totally right about the recurring actors sometimes taking you out of the moment - when I saw Hugh Grant as the savage tribal chief, I half expected him to say 'Whoopsie daisy, terribly sorry for killing you.'
Talk about two divergent paths. I'd say in 1990 you'd be able to say the same thing about Hugh Laurie, and yet now I think people would buy Laurie in such a role. Hugh Grant's just never shaken that awkward but charming air, though.

Pffffrrrrrrrrrrrrrt.

@@FramesPerSecond It is a flawed masterpiece whose reach exceeds its grasp. Like David Lynch's Dune. Is it a mess? Sure. A beautiful mess that demands a few viewings.
One of those movies that isn’t about time travel but is more complicated than a movie about time travel.
5 minutes in and I already lost track of the storyline.
Right? This film is a snore fest
Six stories set over hundreds of years. None of the stories are even remotely connected (except for one character appearing in two as a young man and an old man), but the film reuses the same actors with different makeup to portray how souls reincarnate over time, some transitioning from evil to good, or vice versa. For example, Tom Hanks' character in the earliest story is the main antagonist, whereas the story set hundreds of years later he's the protagonist. Hugo Weaving and Hugh Grant are evil in all iterations of themselves. There are a bunch of connections strewn throughout the film but they're only really for if you're into that sort of thing. I loved the film at one point but it's such a task to watch.
The lack of comments about the missing outtakes is alarming.....
Honestly. I wonder how many people actually watched the outtakes and that's why they're gone.
Makes me sad.
This is actually my favorite movie, but I still got a good laugh out of this. Thanks for doing this one!

I mean, by definition, no, you are the only person in the world to have had your specific set of siblings. Even your siblings didn't have your siblings as you were one of theirs and that skewed the relational dynamics.

Run, Forest! Run!
I have been waiting so long for this one. So happy. Thank you Cinema Sins
The elevator meeting isn’t a coincidence. The movie is very clear that all of the stories (and the people in them) are interconnected.
In each story, one person has a birthmark that’s in the shape of a shooting star/comet - and there’s at least one event that connects the story to the others. Therefore, the concepts of fate and relationships are main themes.
The cuts between stories are also very intentional - and the movie uses them to help show how the story connects to the others.
"It's like the '70s meets pea soup!"

Also, Radio Shack. **DING!**
I wont apologize. I love this film. I love this book.
This might help someone better understand Cloud Atlas, as this is better explained in the book...
If you view the story chronologically, each version appears in the next. Cloud Atlas opens on a beach where a doctor is collecting human teeth of a once cannibalistic tribe. That doctor then interacts with the slave and Adam Ewing on a cross-ocean voyage and the story is written into a chronicle that is read in the next iteration by Composer Robert Frobisher. Frobisher's love letters to his lover Rufus Sixsmith, who shares sensitive data about the nuclear reactor with reporter Luisa Rey are read by Rey who also seeks a copy of Frobisher's Cloud Atlas Sextet for Orchestra. In the next time period, Timothy Cavendish is a book editor who edits Luisa Rey's news articles into a single book. After he escapes the nursing home, he writes his memoirs which are made into a feature film. A clip of the film is discovered by Somni 451 who works to emancipate the cloned fabricants (unwitting cannibals). Somni 451's final missive becomes the basis of a future religion of an almost primitive race of people who regularly have to fight a cannibalistic tribe potentially closing the loop of connectedness. It's a similar theme to Battlestar Galactica's "all of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again."
Miek in the pub is the best part of this move: we are in need of assistance
But actually Cloud Atlas is an awesome movie. It's like the butterfly effect like ones action affects the other
I entirely agree, tho i really didn't appreciate the whitewashing as time went on
@@royalgecko5683 It's not whitewashing exactly, I believe they didn't have a choice in order to visually show us that these characters are the same people being reincarnated throughout history (and future)!
The main character however, was easily distinguishable by the comet or shooting star birth mark which they show us multiple times, so for that specific role they could actually use Asian/white/male/female actors.
But I have to admit that the first time I saw the makeup, I thought they were half Aliens/Humans or that it's some form of mutation lol
@@SirBroodAlot, i know it doesnt come off as it as the whole thing is reincarnation, but its still whitewashing, lol
@@royalgecko5683
No, it wouldn't make any sense if they didn't use the same actors, the message of the movie would fall apart if they used different actors only for Neo Seoul!
Whitewashing in media means "the practice of casting White actors in non-White roles *in order to appeal to larger audiences".*
So by definition it's not whitewashing, as their decision had solid reasoning and also they actually did hire Asian actors.
@@SirBroodAlot it may not technically be whitewashing (it is tho) but they still had some non Asian actors playing asian characters. I understand the thought process behind what they did and i understand that their hands were tied when it came down to it but its still whitewashing
