I absolutely love Cloud Atlas! Besides its fantastic direction, it resonated with me on a personal level that I still find difficult to put into the words, which posed quite the challenge for making this video, but I hope I was able to articulate some of it. I got so many Jordan Peterson vibes from this video, and I was right! It's amazing. I've been seeing his ideas (of which he derived from Jung, Solzhenitsyn, Dostoevsky, etc.) almost everywhere I look, and I think it really speaks to the truthfulness of them.
Stop doing things that make you feel weak. Your actions matter. Aim for the highest Good.
These ideas are changing my life, and many other people's lives, and I thank you for further spreading these ideas in the form of these immensely touching, well-crafted video essays.

Having read the book and seen the movie, i feel its more correct to say the movie and book are very complementary to each other and are of roughly equal, high, quality. But to each his own i guess.

@@madd5 The movie itself isn't really about much at all. They made a movie out of the plot mechanism David Mitchell used to write the book, but didn't make a movie about the actual book itself. From my reading, Cloud Atlas is about oppression and what people will do to justify oppressing others. It's present in every story arc.
I think the movie was extremely beautiful, and I very much appreciated the "tipping point", where we know the story has reached its center, but found the movie overall to be... empty. I may come back to it in a few years, and see what that version of me thinks about it.

That being said to understand the nature of this reality you have to study the numbers, the language of the architect, the designer. The only ultimate truth will always be in the numbers.

Cloud Atlas was actually too late! It would have been considered a masterpiece by an even wider audience if it had been made in the 90s. I believe the era of great movies has passed.
Agree. It fizzled out around the year 2000. I have a high standard before I call a movie great...or even good. A few good ones I've seen recently:

When this movie came out, I was in Zambia, and my relatives and everyone walked out of the cinema to go watch argo in the next hall, I was left alone in the whole cinema, watched the whole movie by myself. Went home and was speechless, people walked out on knowledge and perspective smh. Amazing movie. Thanks for the review it's crystal

I watched it and pushed others to watch it, whom come back or I follow up hoping to share an elation of conversation with that friend, only to be told the movie is too long. Or it was confusing. Or it was boring. And my heart crushes, because it - the BOOK is a masterpiece; the the essence of the premise which the film captures - is a classically timeless movie with an important message that so many seek out through religion or through outbursts of anger. ...I guess we are the droplets. The few who must continue forth, showcasing the meaning through our action in hopes that the many seekers we call friends and family will understand. Reverberate!

I now work in corporate America, but this project was so inspiring, it continues to help me find inspiration in the driest situations. Thank you for reminding me of this film and this story. ❤️

Not a single movie has inspired me as much as Cloud Atlas has! It truly changed how I look at life, and showed me how important every action is! No matter how small something may seem, I always keep in mind: "What is an ocean but a multitude of drops?" For me it's the most powerful quote ever! And everything and everyone is connected!
Every single one of us is like a ripple in the water, every evil thing we do and every good thing we do affects the entire course of history.
An under-appreciated masterpiece of a movie. In time though I believe this movie will become a classic whilst the rest of the movies released in the last decade will be forgotten...
I remember reading how Roger Ebert thought Synecdoche, New York was by far the best movie of the decade and the 21st Century so far. Little did he know... ;)

exact sane, I rank it as the most impactful movie of my life, and every-time I've watched it I have got something new out of it. Also changed how i view death (not reincarnation, but more simple, not spiritual or religious). It's also the only movie i've watched that is better than the book it's based on.

I just saw it again and it kinda reminded me of Virginia Woolf's The Waves, this kind of striking genius that just leaves you satisfied and filled with hope for tomorrow. It's truly amazing :)
the only storyline i cared about was the one with the asian girl. the rest were too cliche
@@jebes909090 All the storylines are based on tropes, a dystopian future based on Soylent Green and Brave New World, another dystopian world where people have become savages yet there are technological futurists who are in aid of said savages because they hold the key to a better world, old people who try to get out of an institution, a gay boy in interbellum Britain who aims to be an artist, a white dude who does the right thing by freeing a slave and flipping his finger to aristocracy, a journalist that discovers information that could get her killed, yadda yadda. No one cares; what really matters are the details and how it's executed. Funnily enough, you picked out the one that borrows significantly from other sources and therefor could be considered the most cliche. It's just a preference, but calling tropes cliche is a confusion of values.
When I've had a really bad day and feel the futility of my life bearing down on me, I put this video on. It brings me back to the light. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for sharing this wonderful piece of art with the world.

I think Cloud Atlas is one of the best Multigenre films of all time. Horribly underrated by most. But loved by other's I think it's message of interconnectivity will echo throughout all time. I found it's message to be an extremely powerful and beautiful one. Unlike Solzhenitsyn, I shan't be alone .
This movie will become famous, not now, in 50 years or more, when mankind is capable of understanding the beauty of it. The best movie I have ever seen.
Cloud Atlas really is the spiritual predecessor to Sense8.. another brilliant piece of art by the Wachowskis and Tykwer..the real dream team..so ahead of their time

The quote about evil running through every heart is true but there's a big difference between the amount of evil someone poor can commit or someone with power and wealth. Their ability to kill, destroy and get away with it exceeds our ability to control it. Power corrupts so I do think that the powerful are more guilty of evil than the poor.
I always get goosebumps when I hear the Cloud Atlas song.
What a stunning movie.
This movie is desperately underrated. It took a lot of risks, and not all of them paid off, but by god the ones that did really DELIVERED. A beautiful sci-fi epic that has an intrinsic human core that rare to see these days. I'm hoping that this will become a cult classic in years to come, it so deserves it.

Cloud Atlas is one of the most ambitious films ever made. While watching it, all I could think was "who greenlit this?" It was no surprise to find that the film had to be independently funded because the studio didn't want sink money into it.
It is a challenging film that asks a lot of it's audience, keeping track of six separate stories, with no one main anchor character. Yet it rewards your attentiveness when all the stories come together. Truly an amazing film, can't believe it took me seven years to find this gem.
Finally, some love for this movie. I read the book and watched the movie several times. I think is great always give me something to think about. Great job with the video.
I really enjoyed this film, I always wanted a film that could show many genres but that could all be connected by something, and what connects people more than love??
Plus I never tough that using different actors for the diferent periods were not only to show reincarnation, but also to demonstrate the way everyone is connected because different members in the cast can play the same soul, I mean that was the theme of the movie so it makes perfect sense.
I also enjoyed it and liked the idea behind it. One of the most original films I've ever seen. What I found very distracting however was the amount of action movie like scenes and all the violence. It didn`t need to be so graphic and instead of adding to the plot, it took away from it.
I love this movie, one of my all time favourites and I can't even explain why.

Tywker and the Watchowskys are not infallible with both hits and misses throughout their careers; but 'Cloud Atlas' is really an underappreciatted jewel deserving a better fate for the future. As a writer who doesn't write over finding meaning, this video really struck me as a call to arms... Thanx!!!

I tell so many people that this is one of the all time favorite movies. Once you see past the visuals and focus on how the movie is trying to showcase ideas, it really shines.
A movie I will never forget; nor tire of viewing again, and again.
I remember watching this movie with my family when I was 15, and to this day it remains one of my most favorite movies of all-time.
I also can't quite describe what I got out of the movie but it felt like it was made just for me. The soundtrack alone ringed in my head for years on end.
I'd like to add that in this game called Life Online, we are all indeed interconnected within this rich tapestry. Cloud Atlas doesn't provide a solution for the ills of the world but it definitely inspires.
I can rewatch that movie time and time again, it never gets old or boring. Its a timeless masterpiece that really makes you think about certain things. Thank you for this amazing essay.

Thank you for that. This mentioned interconnectedness is the reason why I love music. Just listening to Chopin and thinking, what did he feel when he wrote that note, what did the interpreter feel when he learned that section. And then letting both of them take your emotions and shit all over them in one moment, raising them up with hope and love in the next.

Thanks so much for making this video - with something else I heard today along very similar lines, I feel like for the first time in my life I really understand the importance of individual choice and strength of heart, how it can have the utmost important bearing on us day-to-day, and allows us to enact that into the world - however many drops that may be in the ocean! I think Cloud Atlas and Sense8 are very similar, telling stories about connection and love and being kind to others

This essay, even more than the others of yours, all of which I have loved, went off like a bomb inside me. I was left standing over the last of the dishes in the sink, the whole evening free ahead of me, the Cloud Atlas soundtrack echoing on repeat in my head, feeling moved. Moved some unknowable distance a little further towards possibly doing something meaningful in this world.

I fucking love this movie so much. I actually really appreciate that they removed the book's boomerang structure. The changes they made for the movie were actually very appropriate, especially the same actor thing as you mention. The editing in this movie is spot on!

Cloud Atlas is my favorite book. I've read it many times. I've listened to the audio book, too. (I highly recommend the one in which each of the six stories is read by a different narrator). Then I saw the movie. The movie was beautiful, but it disappointed me because it did not and could not cover all of the nuances and complexities of the book, or so I thought. I watched it once and gave it this generic review: "The movie is good, but the book is better." I then ignored the movie, and continued to love and analyze the book. This examination of the movie changed my mind. I no longer see one as inferior to the other, but as two equal parts of a whole. Now I want to purchase a copy and keep it on the shelf next to the book. Thank you.
As I watched this video, I was reminded of Neil Gaiman's commencement speech to the University of the Arts, Class of 2012. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it. It's worth 20 minutes of your time to watch the whole thing, but it can be summarized in three simple words: make good art. Cloud Atlas contains multiple messages, and that's something I love about it, but it can also be summarized in three simple words: make good art.
And so I leave this simple yet powerful commandment with everyone, for the sake of everyone.

Outstanding work as always. In this essay you brought up moral behavior on an individual level, saying, "For why should I suffer and sacrifice for a greater good that's never going to manifest itself? Why should I stand against injustice if my efforts will only end up being inconsequential?" I believe this is at the heart of Kant's categorical imperative, "Act according to the maxim where you could will it to be universal moral law." You described it beautifully before from the examples of Batman and Balian in Kingdom of Heaven. They believe in something greater than themselves and act accordingly even though the majority cannot comprehend what that entails. Sacrifice, all for the greater good. Thank you for being a drop of beauty in an ocean of repulsiveness. Bravo. 👏

I absolutely LOVE this movie - I saw it in theaters three times before it left, once with my mom, each time in a different theater and format (film negative, HD digital, etc.) and nothing else that came before or after within the 2010's ever equaled it, let alone surpassed it. It was one of the best big-screen experiences of my entire life, easily the best movie I saw on the big screen before I turned 30, and I treasure the memory profoundly. When the pandemic resides and they hold a big screen re-release of this film in my hometown sometime in the future, I'm not going to miss it, and I will definitely bring a date!

I read the book several years ago because I didn't want to see the film without knowing the greater context it was working from, and then after finishing the book I couldn't bring myself to watch the film because the book was just so good it didn't feel possible to capture it all on screen. Have you seen kings speech? It's such a beautiful movie about a real king who stutters. Queen Victoria II's father.
As a fellow stutterer I'm right there with you. Please look up HCRI. It helped me get my stuttering under control. Sounds crazy but its literally the only thing that works - a scientifically researched and proven method of targeting the speech muscles to help us take control of our speech again. Much love, my friend.
36yo with a stutter as long as I can remember, countless trips to Speech Therapy/Ellocution/Counselling growing up led me to the Maguire Program when I was 17, that gave me the confidence to do a stage play for school and that inspired me to go out and get a Drama degree where I learned (the hard way) how to control myself for stage, everything from original pieces to getting to play Friar Laurence in R&J and Shylock in Merchant of Venice.
Life drifted from acting, but I remained confident, even through cancer diagnosis when I was 31 and in recovery from that Cancer I decided, as I live in Belfast, to do a little bit of Extras work for GoT and now, forever-more in the episode The Door, I'm there at the Kingsmoot supporting Yara, with my own place in one of the greatest stories ever told.
Like Cloud Atlas, something which can inspire us all. Best thing I learned about my stutter came during the Maguire Program, and it changed everything. it's not a disease, it's not a curse... It's part of me, part of my personality, and always will be. It doesn't control me though... I own it, and even on my most fluent of days I'll never forget that because without it I wouldn't be me and you wouldn't be you.

Cloud Atlas was/is a masterpiece. Most people are to low information readers/movie goers to really get it. Great essay on this.
Love this movie! I watched it oh probably at least 20 times and found something new each time! This movie stands out as a one of a kind and a beautiful piece of art!
This was another outstanding video Tom! You're really raising the bar and pushing the format to new heights with your videos this year, which is both aggravating and inspiring because it makes me that much more critical of my own work, but it consequently also pushes me to really do better with every new video. I can see the Jordan Peterson influence in this one, especially towards the end. I've been meaning to read Dostoevsky and Solzenitsyn for a while, which book would you recommend for a first time reader of Dostoevsky? - Thomas
