Dangers of Self Help Culture

  • Self + self = more self.
Self-love, self-hate, self-help - it’s all one in the same, because the root is the same: SELF.
In this episode, I talk about the dangers of self-help culture, which include: assuming that we are good enough as is, capitulating a society that is literally SELF-centered, and watering down/edifying the biblical God-if not ignoring Him altogether to opt out for the “higher self” narrative instead.
No matter how you spin it, self-help has one goal: self-actualization. Self-healing. A concept that sounds pretty to the ears, but ultimately defies Scripture. Self-help keeps our sights set on the mirror and whatever that reflection can finitely offer back to us, instead of on Jesus and our promised eternal salvation in Him.
The thing about striving for self-actualization/healing within this personal development movement is that we do genuinely go into it with the best intentions - to grow and be better people - but the intention remains self-motivated, rather than for the glory of God, which leads us to idolatry of the self, creating more need for the self and no room for the Lord.
With self-help culture, before you know it, you are so full of yourself that you don’t even realize how hungry you truly are for God.
The reason you HAVE the hunger to grow that led you to self-help is because God designed you to need Him (John 15:4-5). You are hungry because it is GOD who feeds you your daily bread - not affirmations in the mirror, or daily journals, or a routine, or mindset training, or manifestation, or whatever else self-help falsely promises as the “thing” to help you heal you.
So does this mean we should neglect our wellbeing? Absolutely not. It just means that we stop going within to find healing when that’s the same place we find our strife. The self cannot be both the problem and the solution-logically, it’s a fallacy. So instead, we focus on self-sacrifice over self-help: laying our life at the Lord’s feet and stop exalting the self & our efforts as if we ourselves are the god of our life.
Stop reaching for the best of life and instead receive the life in Christ. If you were good enough on your own, you would have “done it” by now - you need Him. Desperately. We all do.

One problem, I think, is the continuous fixation on self-improvement and goals, constant change required - so people get stuck in the chasing of fulfillment without accepting and just simply being, as is, blessed with the endless, continuous love and fulfillment from Jesus.
We don't always have to be improving, we should focus more on enjoying the beauty of what God is providing in the present moment - and to get into the habit of doing this throughout each day. This habit has been changing my life and growing my gratitude more and more each day. 🙏 ❤️

I think the problem with these self help culture is that it seems very positive but it will take your eyes away from Jesus and you live your life believing a lie that you’re good person and you could live however you want because you deserve it..when the reality is you don’t, our purpose in life is to give the glory to him because he deserve it not us.

I’ve been a chritian for about 24 years and *some* self actualization is necessary for a person to be a whole being. We are Spirit, soul and body. We are all uniquely created for a purpose. MANY Christian’s ONLY go to church and can slap you with Bible verses left and right but there CLUELESS when it comes to knowing their uniqueness, strengths, weaknesses, knowing what THEY truly like or dislike bc they’ve completely threw their hands up and said ‘if it’s your will or God will make a way if he wants me to have, do, take…’ given their free will to choose up bc they’re afraid to think for themselves outside of God. They don’t realize that Hod has given them a mind to think with. They don’t know how to regulate emotions, walk in confidence, and eliminate anxiety, fear and worry. All the these things are in the Bible- the self help world has simplified how to apply them. I once heard a Ex New Age guru say, “Self help without the Holy Spirit is a very dangerous place to be.”
I truly think self help/awareness is very necessary along having a deep knowledge, relationship, and revelation of who God is, what Jesus did, who you are in Christ and the individual that God made you to be creates a whole being lacking nothing.
Self help is simply using scripture in the world without the true source-simply what Satan is known for, using Gods principles and perverting them to deceive, distracts and gain legal access.

This was an amazing breakdown and pieced together everything that I had slowly come to the same conclusion based on my experience and my observations of people close to me that participate in new age spirituality/witchcraft. They are completely and chronically narcissistic and they are ALL about self to the point of saying that they are God! (Blasphemy!). They are all about SELF.

Amen. I have lived this. I had problems with selfishness which turned into anxiety and fear of mistakes. I begged Jesus to take it away when it got too much. I didn't know what it was at the time, in 2 days she shout my mouth and opened my heart. I loved myself the way He sees me and then everyone else and felt forgiveness and Grace fill me. If I didn't live it I would not believe it can happen. Whatever you have just give it to Him. Thanks Angela for spreading awareness about the dangers and nature of New Age. Like you, I always wanted to be better. I ditched self help stuff because it felt fake, out of my reach. I felt bad about myself and nothing could take that away. At the same time I felt I had a value, I wanted to have one, but I didn't know what could give me that value. Just someone saying I had it, couldn't convince me. When I found Jesus it was a new life. He actually got me to become better exactly at those things I wanted (being able to study, work, have friend, not be anxious, have a family). I never moved an inch by myself. While just trying to follow Him and failing so many times, over the years I actually improved. Just by his grace. I went through a lot of pain and by His grace, that also made me better. I would have never thought a loser could win. But with Him, I come as I am, a loser, and He wins for me, firstly over my worst enemy, which is me.
I have a question for you. I've found Dr. Jordan Peterson. He's an expert in personality Diso and also studied totalitarianisms in depth. He also loves the Bible. He gives advice on how to be better, but from a very different standpoint than self help books, and I'd like to know what you think if you ever want to check it out. It is a toxic culture of self love and that's because the culture is conditioning us all that when we've 'come' through a crisis, that we were there because we didn't love ourselves of because we had low self-esteem (conversations you would never have in other cultures) when in reality the person may be dealing with spiritual warfare.

I just saw a movie called SPLIT, and it was all about this mentality. "You can achieve to be what you believe you are," but is bizare where he got himself into.
No good will come from that, for sure. The movie is fiction, ok. However, the spiritual realm is not. Instead of getting better, he never stops to struggle with trauma, and he hurts everyone who tries to help him. He lives a life that no one would like to since he is basically in the back seat, being controlled by others. So, yeah, it is dangerous. The road for self helpness promises something that can't deliver what it says it will. Even if you do everything as it says, which only leads to frustration.

I resonate with what you are sharing and you are effective at putting to words some of the things I've found difficult to put on paper. I did not get as far a thinking that I am an alien (joke), but I can relate. I think it comes down to whether somebody is truly seeking truth, which requires courage to face all opposition when doing so. I believe God was also working with me as well.
My friend in Armenia sent me your video from the Daily Wire, just so that you know how you are impacting.
I am personally finding a lot of truth from Walter Veith at the Amazing Discoveries channel. Maybe you will find some value there as well. There is a sermon/lecture where he goes back to how the New Age movement took roots, as well as by who. I found it interesting how popular authors and pastors twisted the Word for their motives.

Jesus does want to Heal The Self...
The self likes to be served! and I do get stuck in a "comfort zone" and not really wanted to reach out for help too... I didn't have that I wanted to better my self drive. It did start off with healing health issues naturally and wanted to help others when I could but then when I wanted too... my "selfish" nature took over... And thinking that I was putting others before me aas also looking after my self first too.
Then the got caught into the battle with the flesh. Became negative attacking my self and didn't want to make myself better than others played on me and then also not wanting to love and serve others. More of my down fall I would read and learn and then do some of it for awhile and not follow through with it. I get real stubborn and don't listen to the teachings but this also effected into My belief in God and Christ. What I should be doing... can also go towards the other end of the scale of being negative and destructive towards yourself.
I was double minded but also could see where Satan was easily getting to me by out the Angry God against sinners When i use to think and see the Love of God over our sin how He provides. And messed my mindset, thinking and the love towards God and couldn't stop a mental rage that took over and couldn't humble my self. The "negative" over powered me and even turned me against Christ..
I am "hungry" for God's power to have that changed heart for him and but at the same time the ,moment what's taking over within an other angry spirit feeding and fueling off of me.
Self help does seem like it helps more people to be positive? feeling good and being good Vs bible saying we are bad/wicked and that's what I get stuck on Self Pity, when you still focus on our self instead of Christ). But can self help also as it treats your self well as being God's creation? You beat yourself up less when you love yourself? But In Christ how God loves us so we should love each other and ourself. "I AM" those statement should be true when you are in Christ... (wish I really wish was and still try to believe)
It does make sense that you are the problem and the solution when it is Us who are making the right or wrong choices?
But it is true that the problem is sin (and it does come from us within us) and the solution Is Christ beyond us and also to be in us.
Jesus is Divine - The Vine
"God's Grace is greater than your sin! " Amen

We are sinners!? Speak for yourself. I've worked hard on being good my whole life even without a Bibble, babble, I mean bible. You should read the oera linda book, it's way less creepy, perverse and leaves people less confused than King james book!
