  • I have a major gas leak through the air filter of my 30+ year old Craftsman 3hp Edger. Let me show you how I fixed it by rebuilding the carburetor...in 4k..with music.

    First time seeing your videos. Thank you for posting this. I have the same edger you have. My father gave it to me. I figured it needed a carb rebuild when I ran into the same issues you had, but this video made it easier!

    Hi Dean! Just letting you know we made it safely back home in Michigan, thank you and your wife again SO very much for coming to our rescue on top of the mountain yesterday!
    Sincerely, two women who were having a very bad day!

      That’s great news. So glad you made it home. I’m sorry I didn’t offer to follow you down the mountain and top off your gas. I was still shaking from almost being crushed by the truck, lol

    Thanks for the video! For the future, you would want to remove the small tank bolts instead of those big head bolts. It's still plenty easy to get the tank off when leaving the tank bracket in place, and that way you avoid partially un-torqueing a weak old head gasket. Also, you could get a better quality job, much faster, for about the same price as a rebuild kit if you just completely replaced the carb. You can get these for $18.99/free shipping from eBay/Amazon. :)

      Yeah, after this video, the old diaphragm carb still did not live up to expectations, so I replaced it with a bowl type and it's given me much better service. See the video here: ua-cam.com/video/R6yBCBfGuOU/v-deo.html

    The major gas leak is because the rubber seat rotted out.. The new carb kit comes with the rubber seat for this model. Is it still leaking with out putting in that seat?

    • @PilotViewProductions
      @PilotViewProductions  2 роки тому

      Yes but I didn't see any rubber 'seat' in the kit I showed. The only thing I didn't install were those welch plugs. Where does this 'seat' fit of which you speak?

    • @heeby94
      @heeby94 Рік тому

      I agree...you can see that there is no needle seat installed and the fuel was just leaking by the needle all the time.

      @@PilotViewProductions It goes inside the brass fitting the screws into the center bottom of the carb. Plenty of vids online on this...check it out!

    Does anyone know the model number of this edger? I have the same one and I'm looking for the manual. Thanks in advance.

    you didn't show if you could lower the rpm im betting it did not because to did not open the idle jet please correct me if im wrong

      Actually Andy, I didn't show it because this model has always since Day 1 only had 1 speed, either full Stop or full Run. I checked with another online friend of mine and he has the same model and told me he never understood this, as his is the same way. From the Stop position to all the way up to Run, the throttle linkage to the governor barely twitches and as soon as you move the lever off the Stop position, you are at full throttle. Your timing in watching this video is impeccable for the following reason: This carb rebuild began to leak again, and I had a viewer suggest replacing the diaphragm type carb with a float style and even recommended the brand. I ordered one off eBay for $11.00 and just installed it today. I'm editing the video as we speak and should have it released within a week if you're interested in subscribing. It will show in more detail the carb adjustments I had to make, along with the governor movements. "Spoiler alert: it works great". I don't think I'll be going back to the diaphragm type. However; the throttle action on the new one is the same....either Stop or full Run. I think it has to do with the fact that the same arm that pivots against the idle screw is the same linkage that works the governor. There really 'is' no idle setting or if there is: it's not working that way. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      I have the same engine and carb on a snowblower it leaks to but it did idle and rev up I ended up changing to float bowl type and it will idle and revup to

      Andy, your comment got me thinking last night and today I went out and made some adjustments that I 'think' were not incorporated at the factory. I am getting ready to show these in a new video I'll have posted by 9/27/21 showing the carburetor swap out. Basically, it was a tiny screw on the throttle 'arm' (NOT the idle screw near the throttle plate) that, if screwed in far enough, engages a plate that causes the governor and throttle butterfly to open more. That screw was screwed 'out' almost all the way....always had been. So basically, I only had 'stop' and 'wide open'. Maybe the manufacturer figured that's all you need on an edger. Maybe they're right, but I adjusted it today and ended up turning the screw inwards, 4 turns. Now it will run at a slower RPM up until I pull up the throttle arm all the way to the top, at which point, the screw now puts pressure on the governor arm and opens the throttle a bit more. The difference is amazing. Thanks for the comment and hope you subscribe to see the other video when it comes out.
