@benjamin.schreiber I don't keep components terribly long(high mileage though) because I do like having the necessary gear range with the smallest gaps possible between them. I've definitely put over 50,000 miles on multiple pairs of shifters though. The Red Shifters I'm using now had about 60k miles on them before I installed a 12sp ratchet and they have about 15k on them since the conversion. Can't say the same thing about the rear derailleurs but I've gotten a little over 30k out of them before

I believe that no one replaces the freehub just because the bearings are damaged, the correct repair would be to replace the bearings with quality ones, preferably Japanese ones and they come out cheaper.
Microspline is a good excuse to get a new wheelset (with different hubs). It's the only hub I've ever had multiple issues with. Glad there are other choices out there.

I messed up the MT-401 freehub (I guess the cheapest Microspline hub they have) in about 4000km - worse even, it had seized and I couldn't get it off whatever I tried. So I had to take the wheel to a bikeshop, where they hammered out and replaced the entire hub innards. Maybe I just had bad luck. Maybe I should have done more maintenance (like disassembling the hub and regreasing it - not something you do as a beginner 😉). Or maybe the cheap Shimano hubs are just crap. Nowadays Shimano hubs are indeed of rotten quality compared to older ones. Last week I proudly gave a replacement hubshell of a fh-m737 to a customer, whose hub had a crack in the flange after some 250000 km. Cups and cones still in great condition.
The issue lies more with modern standards. A hughe cassette with a small chainring trying to turn a 29 inch wheel with super gripy 2.5 tires on a massive ebike puts a lot more torque on the freehub than a 26 inch wheel with skiny tires with a corn cob for a cassette. Also since we have so many gears on a cassette now the freehub body's have become very long so if you pedal in an "outer gear" there is way more lateral pressure on the bearings. Since frames and suspension have become pretty good we can ride over really rough terrain but that flexes the axle (this the reason we have trougaxles now) but that limits the space for the bearings again. My point is if you would put old components through the stuff we do now with our bikes they would blow up after just a few days of riding.
I've no idea why Shimano doesn't go with sealed bearings. Even Miche use sealed bearings in their rear hubs, and replacement with higher quality steel, or ceramic, bearings is so easy.
