  • This freehub noise is common on e-bikes, but can happen with a regular bike as well.

That's why I stayed with 9 speed Shimano. Those crude cheap freehubs never quit. I'd probably go to the dark side of SRAMXD first. Imagine a breakdown like that on a long distance tour!

I have read about this Shimano rear hub. It sure has a design failure, since it has that plastic spacer. Without the spacer, the hub will wear out quickly.
Well, I got one and I’ll see what it is. I quess I have to service the hub every now and then - perhaps between 700 kilometres. Every time when servicing, one has to grease it properly and check the condition of plastic spacer.

Wouldn't it be quicker to buy a new wheel or even a new bike?

My friend chewed up his mavic hub on his e-bike. Many of these hubs aren’t suitable for motor assist.

What does it sound like? I'm getting a weird clicking on low gear when pedaling and coasting and 10 when peddling. Any idea?

Why you do not replace the bearings? It costs up to 15€. The complete freehub mor then 50€.

That's why i practice bmx, mtb pieces are more expensive, less reliable (non sealed bearings if ur pieces arent top) and the maintenance is a hell.
The most complex Bmx piece is a freecoaster hub.
The less complex modern mtb piece is the god damn driver.

I'm a trained bicycle-mechanic, based in germany. Trust me: It doesn't matter wich manufacturer produced a hub. This is a design-flaw of the freewheel itself. Each Micro Spline freewheel will suffer the same fate in a relative short time, especially if mounted at a pedelec. The tiny bearing balls are not designd to withstand the high torques.
90% of cases will have only the outer bearing affected.

      Faster wear on e-bikes then.
Mine only has 800 miles and now I’m worried.

I wanted to know too. There’s a point in the video you can just about see it’s Shimano SLX.

@@maxim54321 You are right. The hub shown here is a FH-M7110 hub.
But it doesn't matter again, because FH-M7110 and FH-M8110 share the exact same spare parts, except the axle.

@@mytoyota80 Actually, you don't need to be worried. You just need to find a bike shop, with really good tools.
At my workplace, we own a tool case filled with pullers for industrial bearings and I changed a lot of these MicroSpline-Bearings, in the last twelve months. This might not be cheaper, but way faster to have the customer on trail, again.

I'm a Shimano fan. But theses hubs are garbage. The Deore is a better design though heavier.
