I realized how valuable directing was when my then 12 year old made a short film in like one day. This kid planned it all out, made a series that was way more engaging, while I was trying to master “epic b-roll”😢. Yeah, this hit hard.

Man... this one hits. Reminds me of the old thought that the RIGHT QUESTION is more important than the RIGHT ANSWER.
If all we do is look at other ppls content and thing I need better B-roll, then not question any other alternatives and start looking for a solution. We may find the answer to the B-roll question but have missed the BIGGER question all together. Great lesson right right there Ben!

Anthony nailed it big time, as always :) I love the way you illustrate your tips with real examples from the actual commercial - it makes every notion far clearer (and for me is a big part of 14-Day Filmmaker's insigthfulness and quality).
I fully agree with the tip, used to make the same mistake in the beginning, as my first training shootings were always unplanned, hoping it will somehow suffice for a good sequence in editor's room. Then it naturally came to me that things simply won't cut well unless you pre-visualize them beforehand. I started planning everything (even if vaguely at the start), predicting double takes for different camera angles etc - and the videos instantly became a bit more watchable even with next to zero gear (at the time, I only owned a tripod and an old HDV camera).
So, in my opinion, you are 100% right - direct & visualize the sequence while shooting EVERY TIME - it even applies, to some extent, to shooting live events. E.g. predicting all the extra shots, location details, everything you can use to turn the lenghty talking head recording into an interesting, varied movie.

Thanks for sharing. 13:41 another tip might be to keep an eye out for continuity. If the talent uses their left hand in one shot, try to make it so they’re not using their right hand on the same action in the next shot. 🙂

Dude you have no idea how much this video has helped me. I’m in a bit of a creative drought right now and I realized that I was stuck in thinking about gear primarily. I’ve spent so much time learning how to perform different shots and edit in a certain way but when it comes to directing I realize that I don’t have as much experience as I need. But a lot has changed in the world of filmmaking in the 15 years since i graduated, and i see this as a potential way of topping up and rekindling my love and knowledge now that i am starting a new video production company.

Hi just wanted to say thanks for the insight. This pre-plan approach makes so much sense. I can relate to this concept of 'directing' as an amateur stills photographer.
My stills work got better over time with more kit, practice and seeing inspirational work. One of the most important improvement steps came when I realised the improvement that pre-designing an image made. I started to think like an art director, designing the end image in my mind before shooting. Then I could envisage how to make said image even better. So that tends to dictate ideas about location, model, props, lighting, mood, inferred story etc.
I still go out and shoot events etc ad hoc, but know they work best when I have a story to convey and a chance to ramp up the style by introducing some pre planned elements.
I have yet to find time to truly learn how to make great video, but your approach is helpful and thought provoking. Starting with a concept of the end in mind - scripting and storyboarding etc to drive the shot list and make end edit easier seems to make so much sense, but wasn't immediately obvious until I related it to my learning journey with stills.

I had lightbulbs flashing off through every scene! OK, you sold me, I'm going to sign up to your course. I've been lurking around your ads and videos for a couple of days now. I'm a beginner, trying to learn super-fast so I can make videos for work. I'm an internal communicator with a small budget who has been making short training clips and 'face to camera' for a few months but I'm desperate to up my game. Every edit gets a little better as I get to grips with Premiere Pro, but it's what you put in there that counts too. I'm not sure that this video you shared though is 'one' simple tip - I took away dozens so thank you! See you in class!

This is just what I wanted to hear. It really is all about mind set... I'm excited to implement this. See I was watching videos on UA-cam of people working on their old cars and I thought 'I could do that'. So I just started putting my camera there and tried to make it as inconvenient as possible but I quickly realized that it just wasn't rewarding and I realized that while editing. I just wasn't happy with the cinematography. It hurt me to produce something that didn't have a story and that wasn't choreographed. I'm going to start thinking like a director and I already know it's gonna bring my videos to the next level

Yeah this is one of the challenges that I go through with my shooting. I have a travel blog but I’m really trying to make it cinematic which is quite hard sometimes. The approach you’re talking about is really cool and I’ve done it a few times with other videos but then when it comes to the setting of me being in a short solo holiday in some beautiful place it becomes increasingly difficult to direct the shoot since you don’t even know what you’re gonna see.
One of the things I’ve tried was to spend a couple of first days just walking around and not filming anything at all. And then once I get the idea of what I want I’d start shooting. But still it’s not ideal😅

Awesome video! I think a great director is a great storyteller. The story is what pulls in your audience and keeps them engaged. I think it's the same reason some low-budget movies blow up compared to movies with huge budgets. A great director has the ability to tell a story with video!
Couldn't agree more. I always go back to classics like Napoleon Dynamite where it was ALL story and the movie dominated mainstream media and grossed millions on less than a half a million in production budget

What a brilliant bit of content. I've learned more in 16 minutes than I have for the last few months. I'm not a fan of leaving links on peoples vids, but the uncomfortable, cheeseyness you talk about, I did this in my last vid. Filmed myself entering uni, different angles, walking the same walk multiple times, moving the camera each time. All this whilst folk watching and wondering what the heck this guy is doing 👀

Anthony and Paul, this was the best 16 minutes I've spent in a long while, great tips throughout the video. I've been doing some commercial video work, just on a tripod thought, while I'm walking around the project shooting stills (mechanics working on aircraft). I want to do it better, so I did bite on the gear bait and just bought a gimbal, hasn't arrived yet. You guys are so encouraging and inspiring, it gives me some hope for improving and impacting my client's marketing!! Video is such another animal than photography, even as it relates to telling the story, so this pro tip is extremely welcomed.
Keep up the great work and content guys! If you haven't done one yet, I'd love some tips on keeping moving subjects in focus while I'm moving with the camera, auto focus constantly searching doesn't cut it. Maybe the gimbal will help with that. Thanks again....John

How did you keep the gimbal so stable when taking those huge sideways steps at 11:23? I'm new to gimbals and it seems like even slightly bumpy steps mess with the shot, is this just a matter of practice?
It's definitely a skillset like practicing an instrument, the more you get out and use the gimbal the faster those bumps in your walk will start to look like nothing. Aside from that though, its still a slightly wider lens (35mm) and the wider it is the less bumps you will notice in the footage. Then finally you can also decrease the sensitivity of your gimbal settings, which essentially means you have to move the camera MORE in order to illicit a movement from the gimbal. Hope that helps!

Probably one of the best videos i have seen in a while, directing and storytelling is something you will improve with the time but always that i am shooting something even if it is something random on the go, always i have story in my mind because it is a big difference having some random cool clips put together and having a story with a super cool clips also put together haha.
Ps: quick tip, keep in mind avoiding "names or signs" when you are reversing clips and shoot from wide to close up and close up to wide to add flow and speed to your edits :)

This is insightful. I am breaking into filmmaking from web content creation and offline graphic design. I can handle things that hold still, but film is a different eagle that I am learning to fly with. I see a real need that I have is to be able to remove myself and make the flow and content so free-flowing that the viewer gets all absorbed in the film and doesn't get distracted by the flaws or seeming inexperience of the filmmaker. This I believe is the crux of this message by the legendary Mr. Anthony. Thanks so much for this inspirational content and for giving me tips I will be implementing this afternoon on a client experiment. (Rubbing hands together.) So exciting.
The b-roll in this short video is so impressive. Plus, you explained the behind the scenes thought that went into the shots. Absolute gold. You're a total legend! So inspiring.
I'm inspired and encouraged that it's not in the equipment but in the capturing of the soul of the content and revealing of my own soul, as the filmmaker, onto the screen. Loving it!
FYI: The walking feet that were edited/flipped have the Merrell brand name backwards. is there an easy editing fix to remedy such a scenario? (I'm also an editor/proofreader. :) )
Just like any other skillset, the secret to becoming a proficient filmmaker is PRACTICE! One of the best tips I can give is make failing FUN 👍🏻
Approach learning filmmaking like a child learning to play a new game with no reservation about looking or feeling like a beginner because thats where you are right now. The fun is the process of growing and practicing and messing up and then trying again!

Nice explanation of directing, especially at this level of production. Explaining coverage: (multiple shots for use in editing), movement of shot, either subject or camera view and inclusion of natural objects (rock, tree) to direct your viewers attention. Also, the awkwardness of having subject or shot composed or moving in the wrong direction- nice solution rotate shot in editing process. In pro filmmaking this "no no" is referred as "crossing or violating the line". Finally in a subtle way you do away with the old directorial/editorial proverb "we will fix in post". You correctly addressed that post production is an area to construct the directorial vision, not fix clumsy mistakes. Fix those in the shooting stage. It's a matter of thinking through and analyzing the shots you are aquiring, not planning on solving problems you missed. Multiple coverage another good tip, just don't over do it. That will bog you down when editing. Anyway good luck, good solid advice- thank you!

Extremely helpful reminder that story is KING! In the music production world they say “it s the ear not the gear”. I also love it when a shoot gives me the opportunity to not just direct but also develop the subject s confident and craft in front of the camera. Coming from 20 years of show biz, i love it when i manage to get someone who s nervous or stiff to relax and be really authentic and happy, performing without pressure and actually enjoying it.

Im stuggling to dial in what FPS I should be shooting specifically sports hype style ads, I was shooting 60 and converting to 24 but learned its dropping frames if not slow mo... 60 fps into 30timeline ?

Hi, so I’m a little confused. Does everything have to have a story line? Or does it have to have a sequence?
For example, a real estate video. Does it have to necessarily have a introduction, climax, and resolution? Or can it have a beginning ( exterior/ establishing scene) middle (inside shots of the house) end ( exterior/ pull outs of the house)?
Or someone making coffee. Does it have to be a problem and a solution, (the person feeling tired and weak so they get some coffee to feel better) or can it just be a person rising out of bed, putting on some clothes, and slippers, and some different shots of them making coffee?
Another thing: Lets say it’s me and my friends walking in the woods. Instead of just filming us walking in the woods, you’re saying to make a “story” out of that so it’s not just aimless clips combined together?
Hi, you are so amazing with your videos it has to be said, congratulations on your training on youtube with your videos. Could you help me, I have Sony Alpha a6500 just need a very good Lens for music video clip.
This will be a massive time saver, thank you! I’ve often shot a mess of footage without a plan, only to face a nightmare in the editing room. Even if I can patch a story together, I’ve lost hours, even days doing it. On my next shoot I will be more intentional in how I create shots and how they will cut together 👍🏻

I forgot to add, do you have any videos similar to this but travelling alone, so having to direct yourself? Only I solo hike a lot, often in winter too so not as much daylight and so time is crucial. What I'm looking to do really is make approx 30 minute videos, without always having to bring out a big tripod but use my gimbal usually. Thanks again!

Anthony, you have a knack for breaking things down into its simpler components. Wides, mediums, close ups,,,,, sequencing,,,,,progressing the storyline. Breaking down the reasons why, and what to look for, making the most of your surroundings -- in short,,,,visual storyboarding,,, and training ones self to do this in the field or on the fly, if you will. I wished I had had a teacher like you with this gift of simplicity when I began my storytelling career in the "80s. Well done. This Ol' dog loved the tutorial. Keep that camera safely rolling- Murray.
Anthony has surpassed me in terms of likability and communication skills on camera in such a short timeframe its remarkable. And he's still only just getting started which is super inspiring.

I just focused on studies for my 107 drone license pilot exam this past two weeks and wanted to get that exam done first . Being that i am a bit slower learner do to issues with a seizures periodically but not often and other things, i really want to focus on another course. Does it matter how long that i take to learn your program ? I would like to take my time with learning your program but again a long time either. Also how many hours a day would you recommend setting aside for study time? I am subbing to your channel now, thank you kindly.

I really enjoyed taking the 107 exam during the studies and feel your system would go hand in hand. My question to you would be how many hours approximately (does not need to be accurate) should a person spend a day on your program, just a tough estimate is all.

what do you do if you're trying to film yourself, you have no one else to film with? I want to create cinematic movies of myself by myself. outdoors and indoors.
You'll want to use tripods, sliders or find a friend who would be happy to film you. All of those are covered in the 14 Day Filmmaker program though if you want to learn more :)
