its just a car hanging around near a burning fuel tank and actively putting your hand in the fire is mental
totally mental but in a way admirable. he was winning and held hope against everything at least at the start of the fire when he was flagging down anyone everyone
He misunderstood the instruction to fight the fire
Well they're nomex gloves, just about the most fireproof glove you can get. He could probably have put a bit more time into wiping away the fuel, using both hands. Everything he's wearing is fully fireproof as well so he's got very little chance of hurting himself.
He wants back in the race.
