  • Muffin Reviews Cyberpunk 2020 (and, sort of, Cyberpunk Red).
    Wikipedia has a good long list of novels, comics, and movies that fall within the cyberpunk genre:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...
    Some lean a bit more towards traditional SF than others, or are only tenuously within the cyberpunk genre. But, it'll give you an idea of its broad sweep, and give you some ideas to play with.

    I’m really enjoying these in-depth videos you are making. Looking forward to seeing more. The essentials section is especially helpful…. I have looked at many games and been bewildered as to which books I need and which I don’t.

      @@WillyMuffinUK yeah your video on Mega Traveller was a real eyeopener... the traveller game has often intrigued me... but the sheer number of books out their is staggering... where do you even start [i actually happened upon the [i believe original] black boxed set in a church sale of all places many years ago, but have still never had the opportunity to play it. It cost a fiver and also had a bunch of other traveller books in the box, as well as what i have to assume was the previous owners secret stash of condoms [guess his mom must have had a clear out and never looked inside]

      @@ElwoodShort Ah, so that's where it got to!
      Kidding. I've put many things in many boxes, but never secretly sold condoms at a church faire disguised as a Traveller set!
      (And really, all you need to play it is the old Books 1 to 3, which are probably in that set. Everything else is just more detail)

      Hah - yes, I realised my obsession with Federation when editing. Yes, Asimov's "federation" was Foundation, but it didn't seem pertinent enough to the conversation to correct. But thank-you for noting it :)

      Awesome! I'm awaiting Case 43, which should arrive this very day.
      If you prefer Urban's movie Dredd, there are some books that follow the movie:

    One of the best games I ever played, was a game using CP2020 and the Mekton Zeta Plus, and apparently some home brew phycher rules.
    The gm used these to create rules for Space Marines, their armor and vehicles.

    fellow musician here. it's been a bad week and i've had a lot of time on my hand and i have to say that i like your series of review. i like your balanced attitude, and, having played most of the games i've seen you reviewing myself, i can also attest that you look at them with fondness, but without pulling any punches.
    there, it probably won't make much of a difference for you, in the grand scheme of things, but i thought all of your efforts deserved at least a thank you and a heads up.
    what are you playing these days, if you are playing something?

    • @WillyMuffinUK
      @WillyMuffinUK  2 роки тому

      First, I hope next week is very much improved for you.
      As for the grand scheme of things - thank-you, it is appreciated, and does make a difference to me - at least with respect to knowing the work I put into these things is worthwhile. I do try and strike a balance, because I feel that every game has good and bad qualities, and every game has both its fans and detractors. I also have a personal distaste for review videos that are negative for the sake of being negative (and clicks), or are overly gushing to the point that any of a game's potential down sides are just drowned out. That being said, it's all subjective in the end! Hopefully people find them entertaining and useful - which, so far, seems to be the case.
      Currently, I'm currently preparing for a D&D 5E campaign for the near future (old-school style, new-school rules), playing an on-off Free League Publishing Aliens RPG game with work colleagues, ongoing Traveller game (currently using a mix of T5 and Mongoose Traveller 2nd edition rules), and Call of Cthulhu (Cthulhu is inevitable...). Scattered in between are various boardgames, BattleTech, Car Wars, Ogre, etc. Hopefully into 2023 I'll be picking up on Rolemaster and RuneQuest campaigns I've had in sketch form for a while - the latter set in my own world rather than Glorantha (it may be into 2024 or beyond that I get to visit Glorantha again). I want to start up a Free League Twilight 2000 game, too - since the Kickstarter for that came through, it's been sitting on my shelf having been read, begging to be thrown into action (and this is partially why any Twilight 2000 review video hasn't shown up on my channel as yet). Things tend to run in cycles - it's obviously impossible to play all of the games I want to play all at the same time!

    • @SimonMas
      @SimonMas 2 роки тому +1

      @@WillyMuffinUK ah, twilight 2000. i never played that, because it had a connotation of sorts back here in italy. there was only one guy in our circle/ association who had it and he was really enamoured of the game.
      it seems you keep yourself busy with games, which is always a good thing. it's a great hobby, and as yourself said in one of the reviews (i think it was AD&D and edition's) it does give free reign to imagination as few other hobbies do.
      have fun and thank you again for the solid work. i've also checked some of your music video: good stuff. is the playback you singing?

    • @WillyMuffinUK
      @WillyMuffinUK  2 роки тому +1

      @@SimonMas I keep myself busy in so, so many ways - music, Scouts, games, shooting pointy sticks at targets... Pretty much why this channel isn't just about games. All I really need is someone to invent 10-day weeks with 5-day weekends, or something like that.
      RPGs are a hobby like no other when it comes to education and creativity. Maths, history, mythology, geography, and many more fields are wrapped up within it, all stirred with a healthy dose of creative imagination. Really nothing else like it. Some pretty interesting people floating around it, too!
      Musically, the recordings on my channel are all me - vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, harmonica the lot. I do use a drum sampler, but otherwise use live percussion. There are occasional ones involving my singer/guitarist friend Paul "The Sarge" - mostly the live ones from our performances as Willy & The Sarge, but his guitar work can also be heard on, for example, our original song "Thin on the Ground" ( ua-cam.com/video/Xu8sTz-mizM/v-deo.html ). We are but simple peddlers of rock'n'roll.

    My friends and I have been wanting to try out Cyberpunk, or even table top in general. I've been setting it up but I do have one question and some of my friends are conflicted on it because one of them expressed an interest. And that is having the game visualised outside of combat. I'm not sure, I don't see that commonly done and I think for good reason. I have an idea of where players might end up fighting, so making maps for that and I know Roll20 allows you to mock one up if need be too.
    But as far as mapping out everything, even outside of combat I already can see is more work.

    • @WillyMuffinUK
      @WillyMuffinUK  7 місяців тому

      OK, this is an important concept, because I see this as a stumbling block and trap a lot of people fall into.
      Important note: You do not need to map everything.
      All that is necessary is to locate places of interest on a rough outline. As a campaign progresses, you'll want to add more of such places, but the PCs won't care about them until they care about them.
      Consider, when you walk down through the centre of a city - do you notice much more than the major landmarks and the shops that catch your eye? How much specificity do you remember afterwards?
      It's the *feel* of the urban environment that's important, not some über-detailed map.

      @Xegethra 7 місяців тому +1

      @@WillyMuffinUK O.K thanks that's good to know. I wasn't planning on showing too much of the world and I'm not going to rearrange everything for that.
      But I thought I would ask anyway since my friend came up with the idea and it got me wondering a bit.

    Style over substance. The best way to describe Cyberpunk 2020. I always tried to make my troupes to play it, but we couldn’t weave a good story. Great review. One question, did you played Shadowrun? It’s like a slightly shinier cousin of Cyberpunk which has seen lots of iterations.
    On a side note, and as part of this series, would you be review the disrupting genre of World of Darkness from White Wolf? I mean, it did change the tone for RPGers from the usual gangs to a more flashier gamers.

    • @WillyMuffinUK

      Did I play Shadowrun? Yes, but only for a short time when it first came out. I found its fantasy-scifi mix too jarring.
      WoD/White Wolf - I've recorded my review, mainly focusing on VtM, but touching on the other games in the line. That'll be along soon, but I have one more game review in the can ahead of it.

  • @markjackson1989

    I kinda think the poor quality of the video game kinda hurt the entire franchise. Fast forward to 2077 and the lore is REALLY weird. Hoping some of the damage can be undone and the franchise can go in a good direction. Just got my physical copy of the 2020 sourcebook today after wanting to get it for a few years.
    For example time constraints made the Night City map get scaled down REALLY heavily, and the events of Firestorm is a garbled mess.
    2077 spoilers:
    Silverhand may or may not be in an ice box, or dead in a field. Adam Smasher is also defeated by a dying sickly edgerunner while Alt Cunningham is unable to reverse the damage of Arasaka's version of Soulkiller.
    Regardless of the preformance and quality of the current sourcebook, the overall quality of the franchise is heavily influenced by the videogame installments.
    The lore potentially is gonna get even more garbled with a content expansion coming to the video game in September.
    Sorry for bringing up the video game, but I care for this franchise and seeing what it's going through is hurting me. The videogame really damaged the main story and worldbuilding.
