I like this video and another similar one I watched. It's an interesting world to explore small differences in grooves to see how they affect things like physical balance as well as the volume balance between the limbs. I think that stuff is part of why we can all play the same rhythms but we don't all sound the same playing them.

Gotta (respectfully) disagree with your cross stick recommendation of landing the "butt end between two tension rods" with "the tip not leaving the head" (but translates to the hand staying on and muffling the head) ... landing the stick dead on top of a tension rod with limited contact of your hand to head makes a much more cutting and vibrant sound.
I wish my dear old teacher Al Hobbs were still alive to tell you how wrong you are. He taught me this a very long time ago. The dead spot is over a tension rod my man. Good luck out there.
