"the funky drummer" James Brown/Clyde Stubblefield... i think that's one of the most notorious tunes when it comes to playing fast 16ths - with it's extended version running for more than 9 minutes... that's definitely my ultimate litmus test ;) great video!
I’m floored. I’ve always thought he was playing triplets with ghost notes mixed in. The entire album in my opinion is one of the best drumming albums out there. I can do these 16th notes MUCH easier than the triplets with ghosts. Doing smooth, perfectly uniform triplets has been the bane of my drumming existence. BTW, I accomplish fast 16th notes by incorporating the exact movements you’ve demonstrated so well. I call it the “half-assed” Moeller. My forearm moves the 8th notes and playing the “and-a” on the up swing completes quarter measure notes. Took some time but after my body accepted the mechanics I was able to incorporate ghost notes and buzzes as well. I LOVE playing drums. I’ve been able to do so much and yet it’s dwarfed by so much I cannot. I’m always humbled by you. I’m grateful for that because, for me, it’s necessary to be humbled to spur growth. Who “humbles” you? Thanks for all you do for the community.
A lot of Sublime songs use quick 16th notes that I've been struggling with. Most of the "40 oz to Freedom" album and Self-titled album. I've been playing alternating RL on the hi-hats and missing a note to hit the snare. It doesn't sound right at all, but this tip might be the answer! Thank you so much for this tip! I can't wait to try it out. Love your videos!
This video was such a joy to watch. What a great, deep dive into the study of economy of motion. What an engaging exploration of how subtle changes affect the flavor of fill/passage. I can't believe how fast I smashed the subscribe button. Thank you soooooo much for this video!
Interesting! I actually use this technique when I get tired while playing songs like You Wreck Me and Break On Through -- I generally start off playing every 16th but revert to the "missing man" beat once my forearm gets tired (about 2 minutes in). One way I try to disguise the "holidays" is by doing them on the beat when I'm hitting the snare. Always great stuff, thanks Stephen!
I Keep Forgetting by Michael McDonald checks in at 95 bpm. I play the one handed 16th notes way slower than that but I at least have gotten to the point where I can do them slow. That was an accomplishment in and of itself!
Interesting hack- made me think instantly of Charlie Watts who had this unique " stop /start method , on the hi-hat mostly, where he drops a note to play continuous/effortlessly.👄🥁
Thanks for the video. So helpful!! … “In Bloom” by nirvana is 16ths on the hats - and, for me, attempting to learn the song has been a difficult journey. So, again, thanks for the great video!
@@johnzackarias11 im definitely not trying to argue with you. (I am not into online arguments). But I will just say that the song lesson that I watched said the verses are played with 16ths on the hat. ua-cam.com/video/rXd0OVYLzrc/v-deo.htmlsi=SIxTNQUZg05sLy4Q (2:00 mark of the video). Just for what it’s worth.
you're right. this is a super basic, non-glamorous technique that makes a massive difference to the sound. i'd say it sounds _better_ than regular straight 16ths
I started playing Africa as a two handed ride, then switched to 4 sixteenths on the one and three beats as two and ah on two and beats 4 less , rushing and hand fatigue, gives it a smoother feel and leads into the fills better
I see many videos on one handed 16ths, but what I really want to know about is two handed 16th notes, (is that what they're called)? Check out the official music video version of the song Transmission by Joy Division for an example of what I'm talking about. Stephen Morris is just incredible! I really want to learn to play at that speed for that duration. Thanks for all the videos, you're one of my favorites. Cheers!🍻
Ooowhatanite off April Wine -Stand Back ( Gerry Mercer) 2nd record album l ever bought- even stole a Large fireBell from school and mounted it on my Ludwig kit❗️
I also do a similar thing except when I hit the snare, the hh hit gets drowned out anyway so I eliminate the hh hit on the snare hit. I find it a lot of fun to play the rhythm w/2-hands on the hh and switch back to the single hand hh w/o a noticeable change to the listener.
Late 70s. 6 nights a week. First song-Love's Theme by Barry White. Every. Night. I left many, many of those unplayed. I was hinge-ing but still couldn't endure the entire tune.
Great video! These fast 1/16ths are tough! I'm not above cheating in the ways you describe just to get through difficult songs. It can be the difference between being able to play a song and not be able to play a song! One song my band plays that is a toughie is Goodbye My Lady by James Cotton (live version). Sometimes I can get through that song without cheating, but I'm exhausted at the end and maybe I didn't sound so good. At the gig this weekend I cheated my way through it and actually got compliments from other band members who said I played it really well! Another tough one is Going Down by Jeff Beck. That one is way too fast for me to play without cheating. I play +a1 +a2 +a3 +a4 so I'm accenting on the quarter notes. That ends up sounding pretty good. A song that is basically impossible for me to play at full tempo, that thankfully I don't have to play is Funky Drummer by James Brown. That one is about 96 bpm and I don't hear the drummer (Clyde Stubblefield) cheating at all.
And to make it even easier, learn to rock that motion with the left hand on the hihats. A. The swing is funkier and B. Your backbeat is stronger. Work on it, ambidexterity frees up your expression
This Is Amazing Grace by Phil Wickham? My worship pastor has me hitting 1/16s on the hi hat. It’s at 98 bpm. I am using two hands to do it now. Is it worth trying to learn to do it with one hand?
Wonderful tonight is a good example BUT. The drummer is ghosting the E on the snare while the hat hand is accenting the quarter note and unaccenting the +a while doing 2 and 4 w l hand. Its a very tough beat to get right. I consider it the new purdie shuffle as far as being a measuring stick for drummers with advanced groove playing.
Never gonna give you drummer Ed Greene by singer Barry White, and Joy by Isaac Hayes drummer Willie Hall the 16ths on the hihats is what I want to play like check those songs out on youtube
Check out Chris Slade of AC/DC Interesting that he has a hi hat mounted on the right. Obviously helps the speed but my god he's fast . I still prefer Phil Rudds groove and power , but this is some performance by Chris. ua-cam.com/video/uCxN0qAAx4U/v-deo.htmlsi=Rj8J3TjbIoNYJQih

Charlie Watts used to leave out the 2 and 4 on 8th note &16th note Hi-Hat patterns.
I'm struggling a lot with Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits! Your lessons are always so clear and helpful. Thank you!
just keep playing it slower and youll get faster without even noticing
I've played that for years. always a fun play. also sing it.
❤ find a pattern with ur legs for the hi hat and kick the rest is ezzzzz
Don’t Stand So Close to Me the Police Just listen to Stewart Copeland he’s the master

This lesson helped me out a lot thank you very much
I think of "Run back into your arms" in the 2009 remastered version by Rod Stewart. Thx for the useful Hacks. Cheers Thomas
I Keep Forgetting by Michael McDonald checks in at 95 bpm. I play the one handed 16th notes way slower than that but I at least have gotten to the point where I can do them slow. That was an accomplishment in and of itself!
This teaching session is fantastic, thank you.
HEYYYYYY, YOU'RE OVER 200K SUBSCRIPTIONS!!! 👏 👏 👏. Praying for your channel and family. Thanks for the MANY GREAT TIPS. 👍

thank you for this! it was helpful
Stephen you’re such a help. Thank you for your videos mate 🙏
Thanks for the video. So helpful!! … “In Bloom” by nirvana is 16ths on the hats - and, for me, attempting to learn the song has been a difficult journey. So, again, thanks for the great video!
In Bloom is 8ths on the hi-hat!

Great video, thanks for sharing so much, i'll work on that for sure !
Never gonna give you up by barry white is a song that when i first tried playing to it i was like, "wow!!! Those 16ths on the hi hat". Super cool.

Working on "She's Gone" by Hall&Oates. Thanks for the tips!
Ooowhatanite off April Wine -Stand Back ( Gerry Mercer) 2nd record album l ever bought- even stole a Large fireBell from school and mounted it on my Ludwig kit❗️
I would be interested to try Dragon Attack from Queen with this technique because it is a hard song to play with 16th full time. I will give it a try.
I " I Keep Forgetting" Michael Mcdonold w/ Jeff Porcaro

Thanks Steve
desire by ozzy is one that starts off with fast 16ths and is the reason why i want to learn how to accent them 😅
"The zephyr song" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the short drum solos...
Stephen, your video is really nice and helpful!!
Very well explained.

Magenta Mountain by King Gizzard has 16th note hats I believe and it’s 93 BPM
The post chorus on "Walk Away" by the James Gang. Song BPM is 103.
Thanks, I was just diving in Rebel Yell by Billy Idol.
And to make it even easier, learn to rock that motion with the left hand on the hihats. A. The swing is funkier and B. Your backbeat is stronger. Work on it, ambidexterity frees up your expression
I thought this was going to be a push/ pull lesson using fingers. That is my go to for fast 16ths
Awesome needed that
Bellissima lezione sei un grande
Nate Smith is a master at fast single handed 16ths
This Is Amazing Grace by Phil Wickham? My worship pastor has me hitting 1/16s on the hi hat. It’s at 98 bpm. I am using two hands to do it now. Is it worth trying to learn to do it with one hand?
Judith by A Perfect Circle has some fast 16th parts in it. It's in 6/4 tho, but still
Fool in the rain, Rock & Roll - Zeppelin
3 more songs that I would add to this video are Tom Sawyer by Rush, Kissing My Love by Bill Withers, & Come Undone by Duran Duran
Only watched half, but... the HH pattern for example in "How Long" is not interchangeable for "Use Me" with all 1/16th's.
I bet you were a great hall monitor in middle school. 😂
Aces by Delvon Lamar Organ Trio is a killer😅

i am not getting the weak hand course email
How long has this been going on. Fast 16ths.
Cant You See - Marshall Tucker

Skip Step By Nate Smith
12:04 that’s what she said
😮😂😂😂😁
Careful I know a guy who did this technique and it tore the tendons in his finger-10 years later they had to amputate both his hands.
Ringo on I Wanna Be Your Man
Georgy Porgy brought me here.
I love everything you do, but in my contract with any gig it lists "will not perform Wonderful Tonight."

Tom Sawyer
Очень много болтает
Please stop calling such stuff a hack or a cheat. That makes you sound like a ‚glamorous‘ drummer.
It doesn’t matter, Thomas.

Africa by Toto
The easiest way for a beat to take less effort is to stop playing it ^^
Do you really think that offering something for free and after trying to charge money afterwards would work really well? I wish you negative growth.
Boring
A lot of Stuart Copeland has fast 16th notes. Tom Sayer is tough too
