  • A group of Star Wars fans convened to discuss the historical harms and ongoing toxicity within the fandom. They voiced frustration over Disney and Lucasfilm's lack of acknowledgment and action regarding these issues. The conversation covered the exclusion of women, people of color, and queer individuals from the community, and the prevalence of toxic positivity that ignores and dismisses these concerns.
The Impact of Strikes and the Need for Honest Conversation
The fans also discussed how the strikes impacted online discourse. They noted the relative peace during the strikes and the subsequent return of negativity and harassment once they ended. Consequently, they emphasized the need for a real and honest conversation about the state of the fandom, acknowledging the discomfort that such discussions may bring.
Disney and Lucasfilm's Role in Perpetuating Toxicity
The conversation then shifted to Disney and Lucasfilm's role in perpetuating the toxicity. The fans criticized the studios for their silence and inaction, arguing that they prioritize profit over the well-being of their fans and employees. Moreover, they highlighted the lack of diversity in storytelling and behind the scenes, which contributes to the marginalization of certain groups within the fandom.
Personal Experiences and the Need for Accountability
The fans shared personal experiences of facing harassment and exclusion, emphasizing the need for greater accountability from the studios and for more diverse voices to be heard within the community. In addition, they discussed the importance of recognizing and addressing the historical and ongoing harms experienced by marginalized groups in the fandom.
A Call for Awareness, Understanding, and Action
The conversation concluded with a call for greater awareness, understanding, and action from both the studios and the fans themselves. The fans emphasized the need for uncomfortable conversations, the importance of amplifying marginalized voices, and the responsibility of those with larger platforms to use their influence for positive change. Ultimately, they expressed hope for a more inclusive and welcoming Star Wars fandom, where all voices are heard and respected.

Thank you for speaking together about these topics. I'm re-entering the fandom and it's nice to see advocacy for diverse voices in storytelling. I loved listening to each of your personal backgrounds and interests with Star Wars while critiquing where representation & support for actors & fans falls short. I loved seeing the Tusken Raiders show their bonds amongst each other, including Banthas and Masiffs. Not so much the massacre that followed. Very disappointing, especially with coding similar to indigenous people like Native Americans. Great points on why these sensitive depictions matter in the writing process, especially when they lack range of opinions and backgrounds towards such depictions.
My fascination with Star Wars is mostly with creature design, having enjoyed the "New Essential Guide to Star Wars Species" from writers Helen Keier & Ann Margaret Lewis. I hope to continue sharing my passion for a franchise like Star Wars through art & writing with new & current friends, while also speaking out against harassment & bullying. Possibly my favorite moment in the series is Malakili mourning the death of the Rancor. It's a brief moment but opens up so much curiosity of the surrounding characters and the stories they cherish with beloved friends & family. Great lesson in empathy. Everyone has a story to show, and hope to see more people getting opportunities to tell theirs. Thank you for the stream & wish you all well!
