I can only hope and pray that sanity and peace will prevail among all races and religions, as President Wickremesinghe works to bring the country together.
Great story and sorry to point it out but how can someone be a "former" Sri Lankan? Once a Sri Lankan always a Sri Lankan, or did you just forget your roots or something after moving to a foreign country? If you were born in Sri Lanka and was brought up in the motherland it would honestly irritate me to know that you consider yourself as a "former" Sri Lankan just because you moved nations. @@WilliamLi-nd4lz I'm from Sri Lanka. British took our independence in 1815, after the Kingdom of Kandy got defeated. Europeans (Portuguese, Dutch, English) had started ruling coastal areas of our country from 1505. But none of them were able to threaten the independence of the country. After the British lost the first Kandyan war of 1803, Thomas Maitland was appointed the governor. Who used John D'Oyly to strategically gain control over the Kingdom of Kandy. He learned the Sinhala language, and using various tactics was able to gain the favor of the nobility. He also used spies to obtain confidential information. I admire the lady and the way she handled her job, but I object to the statement that Britain protected Ceylon for 150 years. It exploited the resources to the hilt and caused problems by bringing the whole island together under one administration in 1833 when until then the Tamil kingdom in Jaffna was administered as a separate territory from India. (As was the case with Portuguese and Dutch). This is the cause of the racial problems that ensued as the representations of the Tamils in parliament was not enough to have any consequence.
"... until then the Tamil kingdom in Jaffna was administered as a separate territory from India ...": The kingdom of Jaffna appeared only in the 13th century AD, until then there had not been such an entity in the north. It continued to operate as a separate regional kingdom until it was captured by Portuguese in the early 17th century. This regional kingdom had been ruled by the Tamil dynasty "Aryacakravarti"/"Aryachakravarthi" which happened to cease/end with the execution of its last ruler/king Cankili II by Portuguese after defeating him and capturing the kingdom. This "Aryacakravarti"/"Aryachakravarthi" dynasty obviously had its origins in India, true, may have had some strong links with them during the subsequent few centuries (13th century AD - 17th century AD) too, still the fact that "The Tamil kingdom in Jaffna was administered as a separate territory from India ...." is incorrect and it's nothing but a misinterpretation of historical facts .... As far as the late Queen Elizabeth ii is concerned, there's no argument whatsoever regarding the fact that she seems to have had been truly a remarkable person from the outset, and led truly an exemplary life throughout until her very demise. Even just the fact that how she held her nerve amidst all the turbulence within the British royal family itself during the past several decades to see that it got through to its present day situation conveys what a remarkable human being she had been. RIP ....

Now its a dump
It developed significantly after indpeendence, its economy boomed and tons of infrastructure was developed. Achieved significantly low poverty, achievd 100% basic sanitation, electricity, and clean water for all citizens.
But you are right, Unlike Indians, Sri Lankans actually had a deep love for the crown. There were a significant amount of people that wanted the brits to stay after the independence.
What happend to srilanka now . We are so unlucky to be SriLankans now
