    DiMaggio and Monroe went to Japan for their honeymoon but cut it short because Marilyn agreed to appear with other entertainers in nearby Korea to encourage American troops fighting a war there. The men gave Monroe an enthusiastic response. Back in Japan, Monroe gushed about her trip "you can't imagine what it's like to be worshiped by thousands and thousands of MEN!" If in 1954 you were driving a Mercedes, like the one at 1:20, people would automatically assume you had considerable wealth. It was that way until the early 1980's when affordable leasing options became widely available. Today, you can't tell if an average Joe is driving a Mercedes, or someone with lots of money. Sadly, leasing has taken the prestige out of driving a luxury car.

    21 cents for a gallon of gas in 1954. Yet I remember "gas wars" in early 70's with gas as low as 19 cents. Pretty steady gas prices until the "gas shortage" shock of 1973-1974. I remember waking up at 4am and driving my car down to the local gas station and leaving it there and walking home for a couple more hours of sleep until the station opened at 7am. After that prices only went up....

      Had to laugh - four years ago I was shopping around for a good used car to use as a beater. Was checking out one clunker at a Ford dealership and dealing with a young salesman/kid who was still wet behind the ears. We talked gas mileage on the car and I told him I was fussy about good gas mileage because of the Arab oil embargos in the '70s.
      He gave me a blank look and asked me what I was talking about. He never even heard of the oil embargos.

      1960s, not 1970s! The gas wars I remember were in the mid-1960s in Miami. By the 1970s, the 'dollar' was only a piece of paper instead of 90% silver coins (1794-1964), and redeemable into gold at $35 per ounce until Aug. 15, 1971! Now, gold in the $2,000 range, silver over $23, showing the "dollar" has collapsed in value, inflated constantly by the Central Bank elitist central planners (Federal Reserve). End The Fed, return to sound money of precious metals as the Constitution tells the government!

    NBC began broadcasting in color on their TV network in 1954. They'd been waiting for the FCC to decide on a color TV standard again. I say "again" because they adopted CBS's mechanical color system with a spinning disc in every set in 1950, but eventually revoked it. They finally decided RCA's all-electronic B&W-compatible color system was the way to go in December 1953.

    Love these videos but i have to correct this howler re Bill Haley's 'Rock Around The Clock' being regarded as the beginning of the rock era...the great Fats Domino released 'The Fat Man' which is regarded by most if not all reputable music historians as one of the first true Rock and Roll songs and the beginning of the genre..along with Ike Turner's 'Rocket 88'..

    November 11th, 1954 saw the first ever. official Veteran's Day. Prior, the day was called Armistice Day. The following day, the 12th, Ellis Island closed for good.

    If this was supposed to be a photo of that year for the Burger King it is not. There are 2 Ford Falcons (60s cars) and 1 '58' Edsel wagon. I am under the impression that all photos in this series were taken during that year.

    Especially those striped cans ?;
    It’s been a very long time since I’ve had one of those tasty cans or plastic bottles of that wonderful punch drink ;
    Stay safe everyone and please remember to keep your hands clean and washed up at all times,
    I’m really wanting a can ,
    Or even a plastic bottle of that very delicious punch chilled along with my lunch- time meal,
    Stay safe everyone and please keep enjoying this channel 👍

    Back in '53, Ray Bradbury gave us the disturbing Fahrenheit 451. Then in '54, came the beginning of the greatest trilogy in Fantasy literature, Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. 🧙🏻‍♂️🧝🏻‍♀️

    Lovely video. I was barely born, but some of these things are in my oldest memory channels. I think it's useful to remember that "under God" was added to the pledge of allegiance to the flag because we were engaged in cold war propaganda, and most people supported that. We were showing we were not godless, and it's why "In God We Trust" was added to our national vocabulary as well. One correction: The ballet choreographer's name is pronounced Balancheeen. Easy error if you don't know ballet. Try anyone on a ballet video speaking of the man if you want to double check.

    1954 may have been the year when school segregation was first challenged by America's Supreme Court, but not until 1960 did RUBY BRIDGES (who coincidentally was born in 1954 in Mississippi) become the first black student at a previously all-white public elementary school in the South (to be precise, in a former Confederate state) when she was enrolled at Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. And she was forced to have federal marshals escort her to and from the building for many weeks. There was an angry mob gathered outside the school to protest her admission to the school on more than one occasion.

      Yes you are right. The SC ruling in 1954 was defied by schools & parents. Ruby Bridges wa a brave little girl, ha a white teacher and because of it wa the only student fir most of her 1st grade. Private tutored and Ruby turned out fine and was not bitter.🙂
