Everyone take a look at Reid's jacket it has dirt on it.. most of the time the wannabe warriors are for one, head to toe in tactiCOOL gear and they are always clean.. Reid is the real deal before filming this there is no doubt he was rolling around in the dirt operating that tool.. this guy is by far the realest I've seen yet.. when it comes to knowing the history of our once great country and the fundamentals and techniques of properly operating the tools he is in my opinion a master. I love sitting down on my porch swing and striking a camel and putting on Reid's videos, especially when he is talking about the current status of our country politically.. he is to the point and very respectful. Reid, great KISS no-nonsense approach to things. Emphasis on basic fundamentals. I like it.
Easiest thing I've found with an Mlok system is to put on a forward grip or hand stop. That way, no matter where your hand is positioned, if your hand is touching that attachment, you'll easily feel that light too.
11 Bravo here. Totally agree, Reid. Consistency is key. What you choose to do, needs to be done subconsciously. You cannot afford to have to stop and think about it.

I use the BCM verti grip reversed as a handstop on my AK. It keeps my hand placement consistent, gives me something to pull into to push the rifle into my shoulder, and makes it very comfortable to activate a pressure pad on top.
@Eric M The BCM grip? Yeah its really comfy. So far all of my guns have shorter rails, so its quite nice.

Handstops work great as well set up the stop and the light the same on all rifles I use a cloud defense mount so it works great with thumb over bore
venomea yep the light needs to be mounted 2:00 for right handed rifle shooters. Thumb over bore to activate
You can also get a pressure pad for some white lights. That way your thumb is always on the button and you don't have to go searching for it. Just an option!

I put lights wherever on my rifles depending on where I can mount them but always have a pressure pad at 12 o’clock for consistency
Plus it has the bonus of being ambidextrous that way

My light rifle at the house is a mini 14 in an ATI Ultimate stock. Luckily the only forward rail was forward enough to be out of the way and light the front sight perfectly. I think you're right about seeing the edge of the sight at night better. Cheers Reid thank you.
BCM Kag grip is what I install on almost all of my go-to rifles/pistols to mark my hand placement, and that way my hand is always in the same spot and can also put pressure on the Kag grip, thus putting it firmly in my shoulder pocket. Works perfect 4 me...

Only addition would make is if you get injured on your dominate side and have to switch to support side.
Or if you switch to your support side due to shooting off a barrier or doorframe that forces you to, then that light wouldnt be where your hand would be.
Adding a pressure switch on top of the handguard would fix that though regardless of position light is fixed on.
Being able to shoot ambidexterously is important and having gear set up that way too.
Im a lefty and world isnt set up for us so im constantly having to compensate for it.
Some ppl say, "just get a left handed rifle or set it up that way." My thought is no, rather be able to shoot/run imm. action drills ambidexteriously in case im using someone elses/ injured, issued a different set up, etc.

I built 2 pistol length AR-15's, one in 223/5.56 and the other in 300 blk. I use the Mission First Tactical light on both guns. They don't have a real bright light, but the lights do offer 2 level red lights along with a white light, they are light-weight, they are very low profile against the guns, and operate with readily available 2032 button batteries. They mount with picatinny rail mounts, and are relatively inexpensive.
I had the light on the 300 blk in the 9:00 position and the 223/5.56 at the 2:00 position. I just moved the light on that one to the 10:00 position,(on this hand-guard, I only have a 2, 6 and 10 position), and it definitely is easier to operate with my thumb. It's not exactly the same position on both guns, but it's close enough to work and operate. I have an AB Arms foregrip on the 223/5.56 and it's a really nice inexpensive foregrip with a partial angled grip built in. The 300 has a free-float keymod hand-guard with a keymod hand-stop installed on it.

Great video. I prefer mine mounted directly under the barrel. It's out of the way of my hand, but close enough for me to easily press the light on or off, or hold the button for a quick burst of light. Do what works.
Spot on episode Reid. I'm new to ARs and have a 10.5" pistol. I have not yet procured a light but -great info and food for thought .

I also like the use of a pressure pad, so rather using the thumb or using your finger tips to activate the light.

More great info. People spend way too much time trying to make sure thier tool "looks" cool. They spend zero time making sure it actually functions the way they need it too.
I run a Surefire x300 at the 12 o'clock just in front of my front sight.
What this mainly gives me is my light is on the same plane as my barrel and sights. If my barrel is clear of cover/obstacle, so I'm is my light and my sights.

I don't have the exact same hand placement on every rifle, but having rail covers or perhaps a VFG/AFG to mark hand placement is a great idea and makes a lot of sense for being in the dark. I do this on every rifle.

I put a flip up red filter on my rifles too for indoor use when trying to not give away my position to those looking from outside.

My setup is similar. My light directly mounts to my keymod rail and I keep it as far foward as I can.I also agree that shooters shoot better at night lol. I know I do. Great vid. God bless.
Reid I gotta disagree with just some of those statements. It's true that light placement doesn't matter too much when shooting outdoors, at range. When doing CQB work that light placement becomes critical. Especially when shooting supressed or an older style M4 with the short hand guards. That barrel/suppressor shadow can take out a whole section of a room. Now a light with shadow is still 100 times better than no light, but close up, indoor work you want that light spilling as much as possible so your eye can pick up that movement even if you not looking directly at it. So if possible get that light out even with whatever the end of your muzzle is as much as you can. They make mounts and switches that'll let you get that done and still have control of your light discharge

Complete amateur here...can/should a light be mounted on the underside of the barrel?
Just because theres shadow doesn't mean there is no light in that area at all especially if you're using newer lights that are just as bright or brighter than the sun. Also, depending on your light placement the shadow will normally be in an area that is obscured by the actual rifle anyways.
@@Doxymeister You can really mount it wherever works for you. As long as the light is useful and you can operate it without changing your grip much...What I was talking about was mostly optimizing the location.
@@RomanCatholic001 Suppressors really change that though. Especially the big, high volume (size, not decibel volume) suppressors. Even with 1,000 lumen+ led lights they can block out a big portion. Barrels can too but not as bad as suppressors do. You can usually deal with barrel shadow

I agree with having lights in the same relative position and using the same activation technique. It looks like the problem you're solving with the grip pads is gripping different length handguards at different positions. I accomplish this with non-quadrail handguards and sliding my support hand forward to find the light (at 9 or 10 o'clock and activated by a tail cap switch).
Needed this video last week! Had my Sightmark lopro on mid top rail. Seemed nice it the house. Walking wooded trail, it was terrible. Shooting 25+ yards, Impossible. Casted a shadow that was huge do to the front sight. Moved it to the side and problem solved. Shadow of barrel casts far far left leaving clear view.

Yes. Be sure to have enough rounds through it to know that it is reliable. I just had my second new AR fail on my during barrel break in. I would stick with AK's, but I need this AR for an NV scope. If buying an AR, buy high end. A friend found two of his low end AR's with loose barrel nuts. His discover this because his front sight wiggled! I am sure there are many have these problems, yet say nothing.
The problem with a saturated market is quality control isn’t equal across the board. A $300 AR15 build won’t match up to something from BCM, Daniel Defense, Midwest Industries or even Aero Precision, their $700 AR looks pretty good.
Literally, the first AR platform to pass AKOU 5,000 round test was a.. PSA Freedom. $279 rifle a month or two ago. Daniel Defense, 'died in his arms'. So, not the most valid statement, stick with reputable companies and you'll be fine.

I did not want to say this, but it is the truth and lives could be at risk. All three of the rifles mentioned were from PSA. I have been the automotive business for over 30 years and know about mechanical things. The parts are mostly adequate, so the problem occurs during assembly. Build your own upper and lower from PSA, and put thousands of round though it, but before doing so, check all PSA uppers, at least the barrel for proper torque, and stake it. Or find an AR ' expert to do it for you. Then do your own testing with thousands of round through all your mags. I do this even with AK's, and found bad steel mags. I have found one bad brand new AK, and it was a nightmare to find the problem and fix it. All mechanical devices are subject to inconsistent quality control.
Korey The things is, PSA guns are typically good. But the make so many for such a low cost, that quality control won’t be perfect. There have been great reviews on them, and people that have had poor experiences. You cannot seriously tell me that the PSA build will be the same as a BCM.

I use a stream light rail mount weapon light with a remote switch. Easily reached with either hand, light obscures nothing being mounted on front end on the right side. Your setup makes it difficult to reach the light when shooting left handed. Since I am right handed, the remote switch allows the light to be on the right side so it isn’t scraping my body or leg when slung.

I like using a pressure pad myself, haven’t had any negligent light activations the stream light rail mount 2 is my choice has been good to go but needs more testing white light is crucial I like the OWL but too expensive I run mine on my right side of my rifle and o don’t have any problems with transitioning hands and obscuring my grip or view
I just purchased an owl last night. They're on sale right now, no better time.
@Eric M can't go wrong with those. I usually run the streamlight hlx but when I seen a half decent price on an owl, I figured I'd pick one up to see what the hype was about. I'm curious to see which my eye prefers in regards to temperature of the light. I've never had a warmer tone light.

I don't care for those types of rifles but I totally agree on lights on your weapon. I have a light on my 870 tactical and I can light up my sheds and barn, very helpful when you need both hands.

I always keep my light on the very end of my quad rail because I have a vertical grip on the front of my rifle that I use with a "c" grip and my thumb is right next to the tail cap of the light and I'm left handed. Plus I can shoot right handed and be able to reach the light with my thumb on my left hand just by gripping the vertical grip.

I've found that a short rail with a light further back from the end of the barrel DOES effect your view by casting a nasty shadow from the barrel. Your light is far enough forward that it is not likely going to effect your view. I prefer mounting a grip towards the lower part of my rail and mounting the light lower.

Spot on and to the point. I have use AR's of varying lengths, so they have different index points, but I always try to keep the distance from the index points to the equipment (like lights) the same. Can Reid just team up with Sons of Liberty Gun Works and get a Valor Ridge lower or something going? haha
