Absolutely agree with every one of those tips. I had my red dot battery die during a rifle class and needed to run my iron sights. That wasn't even under extreme hard use nor abuse (dropping it down a mountain or anything like that). Also, if you can't see it then it's a lot harder to shoot it. The light is essential.

Reid love your channel and love what you do and respect the service you gave for our country. I have my AR set up with irons, light, an optic, sling, and a foregrip nothing fancy just to enough to get the job done. Gonna set up my AK with a similar set up as well that way no matter which rifle I grab I can use it to defend my home.

I have the Aimpoint P.R.O. on my ddm4a2 it's kind of big but I like the fact that it's always on and it stays on. I have the cheapest surefire weapon light they make and it has never given me any problems unlike a few other cheap lights have. I think it's best to invest into the good stuff so your not buying again and again. Also my ar has the same worn out spray paint on it as well. It gives off that....this ain't no safe queen, vibe. Love the channel and I always look forward for more videos. Thanks!

Thanks Reid. I burnt out on Aimpoint after buying a SHOT show special they offered at the Orlando SHOT show back in 2004, IIRC. They offered five different sights in a package for $1800. Great deal, right? Well, several of the sights had distorted dots, regardless of the brightness setting, and Aimpoint customer service told me that because of the deal, they weren’t offering any support for the sights.
At that point, I was done with Aimpoint.

Great and informative video. I try to stress these points to my friends and family as much as possible. Some seem to not get it as much as others. I personally am sporting an Ultimak, Primary Arms Microdot, Blackhawk offset light mount with a Streamlight, FSC47 muzzle device, Krebs safety, Meprolight night sights, Echo93 sling plate with an Echo93 DMS sling on my Draco. I plan to SBR it soon, which will surely add to the functionality of it. My Norinco 56S-1 and 84S will soon bee receiving the same treatment.

I suppose I need to get a gun light. It's not bad reasoning. My kit's mostly set up for hunting and outer perimeter defense, so I thought a powerful self-made headlamp/hat combo could do everything I needed, but your explanation of why a gun should have a light is pretty solid. It's nigh impossible for anyone to break in, but it's still a good idea to have a light on my defense gun. Thanks for the tip.

    Love this setup!
Ive got a milled ak with a magpul folding stock, long aluminum troy forearm, ALG ult-ak trigger (best ak trigger i have ever used), inforce gen 2 800 lumen tac light mounted as far forward as possible, krebs custom ghost ring rear sight, trijicon tritium front post (had to mill down the bottom to get it to screw all the way down for a proper zero), bcm gunfighter foregrip for when the barrel gets too hot, a VG6 epsilon muzzle device and lastly a trijicon type 2 RMR 1 moa dot on a low pro QD american defense mount. It isnt co witnessed but it is QD so no prob. Ive also got a 550 cord single point sling i made with an HK clip on my rifle. All in all it is a heavier setup but she really soaks up recoil impulse and is plenty shootable out to 473 yards (max distance i can legally shoot on my bud's farm)

Great video! Another item I consider a must have in my AK's is an upgraded safety lever. I have large enough hands that I can just barely reach and work a standard safety with my middle finger without coming all the way off the grip but it's still slow and uncomfortable. MUCH easier to come off the safety (or back on) with an enhanced safety lever. The Krebs is nice but with the hump it has it's nice for coming off safe but bites into your finger trying to push it back up. I prefer the Russian Armacor or the Polish WPB safety.

Keep an eye on that red dot. You've got about 7,000 more hours left on that battery. I've got a primary arms MD-ADS that I've tortured pretty good and I've had mine on for 8 months now constantly. It's supposed to be rated for 50,000 hours on medium setting with one battery. I guess I'll see in a few years if that's true. So far so good. Primary Arms got a nod from Trijicon recently by licensing Primary Arms patented reticle to use in a version of their ACOG TA31. Looks promising for PA.

Reid Henrichs You should do a quick video on why you prefer to use the AK in 7.62x39 as your go to rifle. Or maybe just of the pros and cons about each platform for SHTF. I have both platforms (entry level rifles) but am stuck between choosing one to upgrade as my primary but I'm leaning towards the AK (SLR-107fr). Before I buy another rifle and start adding the accessories + more ammo/mags, I'd like to be sure on which platform would suit me for a SHTF scenario. Love your vids and the new channel brother.

nice.. like to a guy that runs his optic out on the front of the gun. run a eotech in the front with the magnifier in back. made a shade tube for it do knock down glare. l run a stream light TLR2HLG under the gun, no iron sight glare, slide your grip forward and hit the light or green laser - on - and still have a firm grip on the weapon. As for leaving the sight on all thus time, LEDs have a finite life like a bulb, I don't leave my 516.65a on because it has side controls that are easily accessed from a normal front grip. lift your thumb and touch either button and it's on. Or strip it all of and put on the nv scope, it has two illuminator's on board, short wide and focused beam. It's a digital unit so with the day filter it's a scope also. You got me on the tourniquet on the sling. Two thumbs up. mine is in a stock pouch that doubles as a cheep piece. nice set up. I'm a little envious of your rifle. Mine is a piston driven M4 variant in semi- auto. I don't have a ak. have a friend who has one and it sweet. And keep some ammo in a bandolier handy I mentioned that!

Good for you Reid choosing a platform that isn't used by law enforcement agencies, you're not supporting companies that sell to government agencies where the citizens of certain states are restricted from owning the same.
This is one of the reasons why I chose the AKM platform as most law enforcement agencies do not use the AKM. I refuse to support firearm manufacturers that do not support the 2nd Amendment and if they sell to government agencies in states that restrict the citizens from owning the same then they do not support the 2nd Amendment, its really just that simple. A lot of big name manufacturers claim to support the 2nd Amendment but they do not, they support their wallet, citizens be damned.
The AK has been lauded as the "underdog's" gun for a reason...

Cool paint job. I notice that paint jobs of military and ex military operators usually cheap(rattle can), plenty effective, and well worn. I appreciate the look. Good video. Fast, concise and no going on and on and on about the same thing over and over again. There are plenty long video makers that I like such as Tactical 8265 (I can never remember the exact number!). Short and to the point can be great too! Your set up has me serioulsy thinking about an AK at some point. Up until now I have been ONLY intersted in AR varients. Can you get any REALLY good triggers for an AK? What about improving the speed, agility and function of the safety? Those are my only real issues. I LOVE piston guns. I see all sorts of rail systems that are now made for the AK. Can you get an AK down to 6lbs like most of my AR's?

  • @arkansasyounggun

Aks are proven workhorses, they are piston driven vs gas driven like the ar. They are a larger caliber as well. Those are the main advantages of an AK. I love my Ar15 but Aks have the upper hand in most arenas.

Hi Reid i know this an older video but i like watching your content. Been a subscriber for a few years now. I have a question for you. Has the UA-cam anti 1st Amendment Gestapo harassed you or any of your videos? I know other popular gun channels have been hit. Keep up the great work brother. Your a true patriot.

Iam curious about your thoughts/philosophy on keeping a full magazine and a round chambered in your rifle.
My one rifle an AR is for defense primarily. I keep it hot. Every second counts. I do not want to forget I have an empty chamber if I need to use it.
Thank you for your excellent content.

Reid Henrichs Please expand on why only 28 in the mag? Why not one chambered and 29 in the mag? Feeding issues?

The part about having the red dot always on is no joke, I had a scare a couple years ago. (Sounded like someone was trying to break in through my garage, luckily it turned out to be something else) Everything slowed down, and I was so focused on what was about to come through the door, I didn't have time to turn my red dot on, so it was just dead weight while I went to my iron sights. (No shoot) You learn alot when you actually go through a real-life incident like that.

I always liked your perspective, it was obvious to me you two guys were on two different trips. If you haven't read Way of the Peaceful Warrior that's who you remind me of. Anyways I'm questioning the whole rifle as a go to for a bump in the night. Over penetration, and being able to move down the hallway have me still leaning towards my Glock with 33 mag. What are the downsides of a handgun for basic self defense in your opinion? I own pretty much every platform and gear so I'm not questioning the platform just seems overkill. My AK is stashed near the door to the house in case I have to go out the door at which point I would definitely switch to rifle but my nightstand is handgun with light and laser rod, although not sure I'd use either adrenaline groggy might forget to activate, not to mention may accidentally give my own positron away. Keep up the awesome work you look healthy man and reinvigorated. Thanks.
