Melvins King Buzzo on Working With Kurt Cobain on 'Houdini'

- In 2008, Revolver's blog (remember those?) MetalKult caught up with Buzz Osborne in Brooklyn, where he was crashing at his buddy Mr. Bungle/Fantômas/Tomahawk bassist Trevor Dunn's place while the Melvins were in town on tour. The occasion for the meeting was the 15-year anniversary of the Melvins' fifth studio album, 1993's 'Houdini,' and Buzzo invited us over to discuss the making of that seminal record, which was co-produced by Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and featured such standout tracks as "Hooch," "Honey Bucket," "Copache" and a ripping cover of Kiss' "Goin' Blind."
I dont understand why people think hes jealous, dont get that vibe at all from him in this clip or any other.
@@droneadventures4147 he definitely wasn't, and from Buzz's perspective Kurt was an old friend he tragically lost. You'd have mixed feelings about one of your friends from highschool going out like that too if you were in his shoes.
He says that if Kurt looked like fat albert no one would have given a shit about his music. I find that absurd. Kurt was a genius songrwriter. People shit on Kurt's technical abilities all the time, but his genius was songrwriting. Writing simple songs that people love is hard. There's a reason only a few people per generation are able to do it over multiple albums.
@jmcdl that's not absurd, buzz isn't saying his songwriting isn't good only that Kurt (a very dear friend to him) was packaged and sold to the masses in a way that ended up killing him. Had Kurt looked like fat Albert big record labels couldn't package him as a punk rock grunge heart throb for teenagers
@jamesbeam69 His direct quote is "I honestly believe that if Kurt Cobain looked like Fat Albert nobody would have given a shit about him or his music". He's pretty clearly saying that there was nothing special about Kurt's music and it's only because of image that he became famous. I find that absurd.
@@jmcdlhe literally just explained to you perfectly why he said that how do you not understand
the people who get angry over this are likely the same people who bought into all the grunge marketing
Hatts off to Buzzo. Sharpened tongue everybody says, but he goes straight to the spine of the things.
his music sucks lol hes just mad
The three Melvins releases from that era, are A M A Z I N G! Stoner Witch, Houdini, Stag, In that order!
Bullhead is my favorite.
Definitely. Stoner Witch is a great intro to Melvins as well.
My introduction was Lysol. I highly suggest it!
I understand that Kurt’s looks are often talked about, but I still don’t think it’s emphasized enough just how important his face was to making Nirvana popular. He looked like a model.
Of course looks have to do with it. Kurt was super attractive
King Buzzo is awesome!
This man has so much character. This, folks, is how you mourn.
By being calloused, bitter, and having little empathy?
@Stan Brule buzz never speaks about Kurt with much compassion or empathy. It’s obvious his addiction is a needle for him to demean Kurt while exalting himself because buzz is clean, no different than history teachers that criticized historical figures the implication being your history teacher is superior to the historical figure. Buzz is not humble. He also talks about how great his music is and how Nirvana only were big cause of an image. Nirvana was big cause the music. It was melodic and the vocal had power and range. Melvins are not melodic and the vocals limited ability is one of many reasons melvins music wasn’t bigger. Nothing wrong with music that isn’t melodic or sang with broad range, it’s just the masses prefer something different. Joy divisions is one of my favorite bands yet their music is sang with very limited vocal range.
@@Gcssdvnkloiutescbuzz doesnt speak with empathy because he was a close friend that watched kurt destroy his life through heroin addiction "id rather none of it happen, than he be dead"
@@johnnymac6242 I’m pretty sure you don’t know what empathy means
@@Gcssdvnkloiutesc your comment couldn't be more wrong, he knew Kurt and the whole situation way more accurately than anything you've read in a book.
@00:20 Exactly. Nirvana was an image.
Melvins have been and still are an amazing live band
One of the greatest
He misses his friend
1:09 is that A little Paul Macartney quote there?
In an alternate universe the Melvins had a ton of success and were very popular
So same as this universe I guess
K so you don't like Melvins we get it.
They also had different music in this alternate universe that allowed them to get to that level. Any bar out there is gonna play Nirvana over Melvins. Now imagine it’s 1990. It’s the same deal. Nirvana just wrote better music from the get go. Sure, Melvin’s are more out there and perfect for those ppl who are more out there themselves, but that’s not most ppl. Buzz spent a good amount of time being rational about that and keeping his saltiness to himself. As years go on and as he ages, and as Melvin’s have continued to not even come close to that level of success, he’s having much more trouble hiding his saltiness. He took the burden of being that niche, out there band, and we’re seeing nowadays how being niche forever can turn you into a salty complainer. For every good thing he’s said about Kurt, he’s also trashed his band, who was Kurt. Kurt was Nirvana that’s why they were done as soon as he passed away. Now go watch what Buzz also had to say about Dave Grohl. Sometimes saying nothing is better if you got nothing nice to say. “Oh he didn’t answer my calls, this super successful rockstar who’s always on tour and is much more famous than I am didn’t return my calls.” Sounding like a salty ex gf. I don’t understand Buzz’s appeal. It’s like deep down he knows his music was never gonna make it to that level of success, and he’s lying through his teeth that he’s happy about how it panned out, how he didn’t “sell out.” That’s where all this talking sh!t comes from. The real proof that he’s not happy about how his band turned out and that he needs to talk down on all the others to find consolation. It’s not hard to see when the guy says he feels terrible about what happened to Kurt, but then follows it with “I feel in part to blame because I got him into music” and not see the egocentric nature of that. Not everything is about you, Buzz. Things still happen even without your influence. Never understood this guys appeal. That whole bands appeal. Is Alice In Chains’ Dirt a sellout album too? Badmotorfinger? Ten? Those albums blow any Melvin’s stuff out of the water. No wonder why that’s who got famous vs who didn’t.
@@warhead5225yap yap yap stfu, you don't know either of them. Pretty sure buzzo word hold a lot more power then yours or any other weirdo meatriding Kurt cobain
So video title is a bit weird since nothing of the sort was mentionned
"I honestly believe if Kurt Cobain would've looked like Fat Albert nobody would've given a shit about him or his music."
This has to be one of the most idiotic things Buzz has ever said and there are plenty.
Nightgoat!!!!❤
Buzz looks a lot like Fat Albert, and correct nobody cares about his music or opinion today.
So King Buzzo is alive , and the rest of ……
Admitting he believes The Melvins SHOULD sell millions and millions of records kind of proves a lot of people's theories that he is jealous of Kurt and Nirvanas success.
But I also always admire his honesty. Find someone else who's going to say part of the success of Nirvana was because Kurt was a good looking guy.
It's kind of hard for a dead man to be successful.
And he didn't say Kurt was a good looking guy, he said Kurt was a Bad looking visibly ill man whose illnesses the media hyperglorified and exploited because they thought it was cool.
@Jet Cheneau lol kind of missing my point. Dead or alive who do you think makes more money and is better known and is more beloved? Kurt.....or King Buzzo lol
Oh, Kurt definitely, but what does that matter when your image is hyper-romanticized, miscontrued and often memorialized incorrectly and all that's left to speak for you is your daughter who never knew you and your wife who's a nutcase?
Buzzo is alive and well, makes a modest living, does what he wants on his terms and has remained true to himself for 40 years. I don't feel bad for Buzz, short of the traumatic loss of his friend. I Grieve for Kurt Cobain, because only a handful of people ever knew the real version of him and that's unfortunately not the one we know.
i think he does have the right to be jealous of the nirvana hype, although its delusional to believe that melvins should be that succeful.
but still, so refreshing to see someone honest like him, who doesn't deify nirvana.
Kurt was very good looking plus he had blue eyes and dyed blonde hair .White folk worship that look and glamorous heroin chic look. But kurt was very talented if not flaw at the same time
yes yt pwr
His hair wasn't dyed blonde
I had no idea He worked on that album..it is my favorite Melvin’s album..
apparently on buzz's account he just showed up high on heroin and didnt do anything... this is the only melvins album i've really listented to, so i am guessing kurt had a little more involvement in it than what buzz says since i was a huge nirvana fan and never got into to anything from mevlins other than houdini
@ same..that album was magical!!!
"The MTV wounded junkie look" LOL... damn this man is insecure and bitter... Charisma is always important with famous people buzz... that is life... Kurt Cobain had talent though so that is that... It wasn't all based on being a blonde, blue eyed, heart throb.
Cobain is a Legend And Buzzy is not , sour grapes , Speaking of looks which he seems to associate with Kurts success what about Black Francis? he was never exactly an oil painting and struggled with his weight i.e a Fat Albert type and? is also a Musical Legend very well respected by Everyone
Wow that was very hard to read my friend. Grammar is a good thing, it would definitely help you communicate more legibly.
@@Tharsis_ f u and your grammar i'm not your friend
I doubt it
@@deanpesaturo6401 areosmith ......f sake
Melvins and Pixies have just about the same size fan base
yet, you put kurts name on every song.....
I love buzzo but he shouldn’t talk bad about Kurt especially when Kurt tried nothing but to help the the Melvin’s after nirvana became successful
Shut up you fucktard
Dude is so fucking jealous of Kurt every time he talks about him. Luckily his band is fucking good...but honestly, not many people give a fuck about the Melvins.
Why would anyone be jealous of a dead man
Jealous of the success of Nirvana
Nothing he's saying is wrong though and he says Nirvana wrote good songs but we're also selling an image which was 100% true
@@sundriedturd everyone is going to be a dead person someday. most people don’t become rich, famous, and historical.
@@666sk8erguy bands don’t sell
as many albums aa nirvana did because of an “image”. at some level of sales, there has to be some kind of substance that leads people to keep buying nirvana. theres an angst in it that connects to teens, and teens listen to and consume more music than any other demographic.
If Kurt Cobain looked like Fat Albert, Nirvana would've sold exactly as many copies. In fact, I probably would've liked them more. The Melvins have never written anything as good as the worst songs on Nevermind/In Utero.
Nirvana was passed over by SST in the '80s even with Mark Lanegan's urging that they were the best band out there. Sub Pop didn't even believe in Nirvana's staying power as a band and hardly invested in them at all And dicked them around a lot. I firmly believe Nirvana's success was the result of MTV marketing based upon their aesthetic appeal. They're as good ever, but after the MTV era began, you didn't succeed because you were good, you succeeded because you were marketable.
As for the Melvins, the two bands are 100% different and incomparable. Nirvana wanted to make rock songs with a pop formula, the Melvins wanted to be the Melvins.
I actually think the opposite. Nirvana's has never written anything as good as the worst Melvins song.
I agree. I love the Melvins, I think they are fire and have a lot of great songs, but Cobain was damn near if not the greatest song writer and guitarist of all time. THAT is why Nirvana is so successful
@@Swampson1738 Kurt sucked at guitar
Nahhh they still would have sold a lot but definitely not as much.
Kurt Cobain is the greatest songwriter of all time.
buzz sounds a lil jealous
Respectfully disagree
Nirvana is just heavy bay city rollers. Boring stuff, next!
@@droneadventures4147 literally the band has said that about themselves so I guess Kurt isn't too bright lol
Yours is the most idiotic comment of all time
Such a jealous dude
David Brent.
Kurt Cobain was David Brent. That's why he ended it.
He's so bitter and jealous.. Kurt surpassed him by borrowing some of their sound and gets way more notoriety because he wrote better songs.
I don't think anyone would be jealous or bitter of a dead junkie.
yeah but look whose alive 💀
More like he’s still obviously sad about the loss of an old friend? It’s really sad people think the only thing that matters is notoriety, that it truly does give you immortality, but he said it himself, Kurt Cobain is dead, and he would have rather had none of that stuff happened if it meant his friend could still be alive. That includes the notoriety he got second hand from Nirvana exploding. That kind of fame usually isn’t good for anyone, and certainly didn’t help with Kurt’s addiction/mental health issues. Crazy how people can spin that as “he’s jealous and bitter” when his bitterness comes from watching someone once close to him change and succumb to addiction. But fans don’t care about that as long as it means the world gets to hear his music. I think that’s what Buzzo here is bitter about.
Buzz has so far not written ONE half decent melodic song .....not even one :PP
he can't write melodies apparently
thinks hes Paul McCartney "Such a drag" lol what a dope
Paul ain't got nothing on Buzz.
@@123612100Yeah Paul's got a lot on Buzz. Namely the ability to write good songs and make tons of money.
no nonsense Buzzo.
