  • This is a tutorial setting up the helicopter rig
    for Carp fishing. This rig is ideal where there is weed or silt on the lake bed, it also comes into it's own when fishing tight up to features as the lead leads the way as it hits the water with the hook positioned behind it.
    when fishing on a clean lake bed it's essential to position the sinkers and chod bead next to the lead. in weedy situations the chod bead should be moved away from the lead and the sinkers widened so as the chod bead can move up the line when the lead is sinking, it will then sit on top of the weed used in conjunction with a wafter.

    I'm just starting to fish again at the age of 60. I know that's not old, but the last time i fished was about 40 years ago.The point I'm making is how much tackle has changed so many different rigs setups and techniques I almost gave up before I started. This is a clear to follow tutorial very well presented well done

      Hi pal.
      I guess a lot has changed in a relatively short space of time although there's a large chunk of it that's down to glamourization.
      Personally I feel that the biggest real change is the emphasis and techniques regarding fish safety, most of it's common sense I guess but some of it fairly technical.
      There's plenty of help out there if you get stuck pal.
      Really pleased that you're getting back into it, my dad was in his 60's when the bug for fishing returned which is still with him now in his late 70's.
      Hope you enjoy your sessions out there on the bank amongst the beauty of nature and catch some beautiful fish along the way.
      All the best
      Steve

      Hi Mark.
      It depends on the angle of the tip of my rod in conjunction with the lead and what sort of distance, but most of the time I use semi slack lines in my situations as I rarely fish at long distances.
      I don't like tight lines off the lake bed it's deffo a fish spooker.
      Tight lines pal 👍🏻

    very helpful video, would you be able to use a Ronnie rig on this ?

      Hi mate.
      Yes a Ronnie rig would be ideal on this set up as it's a stiff boom rig.
      Thanks for the feedback.

    I was wondering if this setup would also be effective for closer ranges.Say when only an underarm cast is needed or even just dropped/lowered close into the margins.

    • @BivvyLife
      @BivvyLife  4 місяці тому

      Yes it absolutely would but if the bottom is firm and weed free you'd be better off with a basic lead clip system or inline set up as they have better hook setting properties. I'll only use this heli set up in weedy situations.

    when fisheries say no fixed lead, is this it? im starting again after 15 years so making sure im good

    • @BivvyLife
      @BivvyLife  2 місяці тому

      Great question mate it's something that used to really confuse me. Although this isn't a drop off set up it also isn't a fixed set up. If the mainline gets cut off, the hooklink will still slide off and wouldn't have a trailing lead attached. In short no this isn't a fixed set up.
      If you're ever in doubt don't be afraid to ask the fishery owner or balif they won't frown on you they'll be really appreciative I'm sure.
      Welcome back to the fishing scene.
      Tight lines
      Steve.

    Hi I found this really helpful, what size sinkers do you use as the Korda ones come in small, medium and large? Thanks in advance

    • @BivvyLife
      @BivvyLife  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi mate.
      It really depends on personal preference and whether or not you're using tungsten beads (The ones in this tutorial aren't) so medium ones without tungsten beads, small with tungsten beads.
      Thanks for the feedback

    Why remove the lead swivel?

      Hi Jake.
      It's to allow the buffer bead to fit completely over the metalwork to prevent tangles and line damage.
