Michael B. Jordan (“Black Panther,” “Creed,” “Creed II”) and Oscar winners Jamie Foxx (“Ray,” “Baby Driver,” “Django: Unchained”) and Brie Larson (“Room,” “The Glass Castle,” “Captain Marvel”) star in “Just Mercy,” an inspiring drama that brings one of the most important stories of our time to the big screen.
Award-winning filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (“The Glass Castle,” “Short Term 12”) directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote, based on the award-winning nonfiction bestseller by Bryan Stevenson.
A powerful and thought-provoking true story, “Just Mercy” follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson). One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx), who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds-and the system-stacked against them.
The main cast also includes Rob Morgan (“Mudbound”) as Herbert Richardson, a fellow prisoner who also sits on death row awaiting his fate; Tim Blake Nelson (“Wormwood”) as Ralph Myers, whose pivotal testimony against Walter McMillian is called into question; Rafe Spall as Tommy Chapman, the DA who is fighting to uphold Walter’s conviction and sentence; and O’Shea Jackson Jr. (“Straight Outta Compton”) as Anthony Ray Hinton, another wrongly convicted death row inmate whose cause is taken up by Bryan.
The film is produced by two-time Oscar nominee Gil Netter (“Life of Pi,” “The Blind Side”), Asher Goldstein (“Short Term 12”) and Michael B. Jordan. Bryan Stevenson, Mike Drake, Niija Kuykendall, Gabriel Hammond, Daniel Hammond, Scott Budnick, Jeff Skoll and Charles D. King served as executive producers.
Cretton co-wrote the screenplay with Andrew Lanham (“The Glass Castle”), based on Stevenson’s book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption. Published in 2014 by Spiegel & Grau, the book has spent more than 150 weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers List, and counting. It was also named one of the year’s best books by a number of top publications, including TIME Magazine. For the book, Stevenson also won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence, an NAACP Image Award, and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for Nonfiction.
Cretton’s behind-the-scenes creative team included director of photography Brett Pawlak, production designer Sharon Seymour, editor Nat Sanders and composer Joel P. West, all of whom previously collaborated with the director on “The Glass Castle.” They are joined by costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck (“Detroit,” “Roman J. Israel, Esq.”).
Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in Association with Endeavor Content/One Community/Participant Media/Macro, a Gil Netter Production, an Outlier Society Production, “Just Mercy.” The film is slated for limited release on December 25, 2019 and will go wide on January 10, 2020. “Just Mercy” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. I don’t think any of the actors will get nominated, if this does get nominated it will probably be for best adapted screenplay but everything in the movie looks pretty standard. I’ll watch this if it gets really strong Oscar buzz but it honestly looks like a rental to me, I’d rather re-watch the Denzel Washington movie The Hurricane, it’s basically the same movie.

When i picked this book to read for my 10th grade class my teacher said there was gonna be a movie and Michael B. Jordan was gonna star in it. I was like why not choose this book. After reading it what i realized was Alabama has some real problems. Like some real problems. The book was written by a Harvard lawyer, the one Michael B. Jordan is playing in the movie, and every one of the cases is real. It actually made me see just how crazy things were just not too long ago. This book really opened my eyes
It's still crazy but I hope it's getting better, time will tell.

The book, Just Mercy, is one of the most eyeopening books I've ever read. This story is truly heart-wrenching and inspiring, and I'm so glad that a story like this is getting such a large platform!
One thing I can say for certain... The day I chose to pick up Bryan Stevenson's book was the day that my eyes were opened to a whole new reality. I thought that America's criminal justice system was flawed... Flawed doesn't begin to scratch the surface. Our Lady Justice is broken. I am deeply troubled, but remain hopeful. Mr. Stevenson is a hero and an inspiration to be followed.

This movie is going to make me ugly cry so badly I can feel it. I absolutely do not understand how people can treat someone so cruelly because of something they have absolutely no control over. Whether it's their religion, or the color of their skin, I just can't wrap my head around it and yet it is still happening.
My parents heard the actual person speak at a forum at my university before I was there, where he spoke about his experience. They then watched this movie and loved it.
I first learnt about Bryan Stevenson years ago when I watched his talk at Ted. Remains one of my all time favourite talks and one that I regularly go back to. Shocked to only hear about this movie now.

powerful true story . great cast and production...truly grabbed at my heartstrings. i am currently advocating for my only brother's freedom from 30 year incarceration since he was 17, just a juvenile, so it was very personal, and the family literally serves out the sentence with their loved one.

Creed and Captain Marvel is two of my all time favorites, so when I seen the two main character from each movie working side by side in the same movie. I was all in before even knowing what it was gonna be about. The fact that it's an up lifter makes it all the more better.

There were so many scenes in this movie that touched me. The top 3 for me defiantly was:
1. When Herb was going to be electrocuted.
2. When Mcmillian (Jamie F) son was in the court shouting his dads innocent.
3. When Mcmillian tries to resist the guards after getting denied in court.
I'm excited for this, especially to see Brie Larson with a southern accent. She kills it in dramas.
